but i'm ready i'm standing on my own two feet Addy took a breath and held the small note in her hand. An owl had found her at breakfast that morning as she conversed with Brigh, Cheese, Dicky and Eggy and she had been mid sentence when she recognized the handwriting and who it was signed by and her eyes had gone wide and her face slightly pale. It wasn’t like her to be called up on by a Professor, had she done something wrong? Was there an issue with her last essay she hadn’t submitted? Was it so horrible that Professor Zabini wanted to tell her in person that she had failed it? After the Professor's first lesson that morning, she had been asked to stop by the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. Addy knew there wasn’t a lesson directly afterwards so perhaps it was the best time. Her friends had noted the pause and her expression but were all supportive and certain that she wasn’t in trouble. It was not Addy’s M.O. to be requested by a Professor so randomly.
Addy folded the note once more, refolding along the neat creases she had created earlier as she walked from her Potions class in the dungeons to the first floor and her Head of House’s classroom. She supposed that’s what also concerned her, maybe a Prefect had finally told Professor that she had been arriving late from Quidditch practice to the Common Room the previous term, she had cited that she had been practicing extra. The team had been performing pretty average, not to her own personal expectation. Still, she could only really worry about her own contributions and practice and try to push out the obvious distractions. She waited as the classroom emptied of its young students, she recognized a handful of fifth years from her own house—their faces pale likely from the persistent reminder of their OWLS at the end of the Spring. She remembered that herself as it was now replaced with persistent reminders of her NEWTs.
Walking in as the last Gryffindor student left the classroom Professor Zabini’s back was turned to her and she approached but still kept her distance. Addy cleared her throat, standing up straight and confidently. ”I received your note Professor, you wanted to see me?”

▲ Blaise was disappointed. He knew that having a student drop out of their own volition was of no concern to him, but he was still disappointed. And curious. What was the point of getting this far in school, with less than four months left until graduation, just to leave? During his own years at Hogwarts, there were extenuating circumstances that had made that a rather common occurrence. Yet he tried to wrack his brain for anyone that may have done so during his time previous to that last, memorable year, and was unable to come up with anyone. Sure, there were instances of expulsion, the Rosier-Bainbridge snafu from the prior year being one of them. Even flunkies like Potter were able to stick it out for an extra year, though he doubted even she would stick around for a ninth year if the chance presented itself. He thought highly of his house, and took pride in his students’ achievements and what they took from their time in Slytherin. While he had been hesitant about the Ilvermorny students fully grasping the concept of what it meant to be a member of Slytherin, they all seemed to take it in stride. They even made some of the Hogwarts children look like fools. Then again, no one could save Forrester or Byrne from their incessant need to be petty thieves and bullies - always putting on a show of their brutish, lonely natures like the idiots they were bound to be for the rest of their lives. Blaise hadn’t assumed Wednesday Weekly was like the normal ilk that fell into place within Slytherin. She was certainly ambitious; enough so that her only conclusion was to leave Hogwarts entirely to pursue her muggle athletic career. The problem he had with the whole thing was the timing that it fell into, with graduation so close, and the extra work he had to do to in order to replace her position as Quidditch captain. So he did what he figured was the smartest thing as the head of Slytherin: sent a letter to Addilyn Slater to come to his office. First thing in the morning. Slater’s sister was a top notch Auror, and he figured the younger one knew how to fall into position when asked. And she wasn’t that shabby of a chaser either. At this point in the season, it wasn’t going to matter who was named captain, as long as the team had someone to rally behind, and she was definitely capable of leading them along. The morning fifth year class was about as boring as it usually was. For some reason that specific year seemed to be cursed, because he had run into a similar situation the previous year with the current sixth years. Blaise found the theoretical causations of hex-deflection absolutely fascinating, but fifteen year olds did now. He supposed it was too heavy of a topic for so early in the morning, considering more than half of the class had spent the entire period watching the back of their eyelids. As they slowly collected their belongings in a shuffled silence, he started to clean up the chalkboard in preparation for the next class. He had almost forgotten that he had asked Slater to show up now, and only remembered when he heard her voice from the other side of his desk. “I did,” he responded without turning around, preoccupied with smudging out the last corner of the chalkboard with the eraser. He liked using it over zapping the writing away with a charm. Seemed more natural to him. Dropping the eraser onto the board ledge in a cloud of chalky white dust, he turned around to face Slater and his desk, and pulled the silver Quidditch captain badge and a sliver of paper out of the top drawer. “Effective immediately, you are now the new Slytherin Quidditch Captain. Congratulations,” he stated with an almost incredulous sigh. Sliding the badge and paper across the desk towards her, he continued, “And that’s the password to the Prefects’ Bathroom since captains have access to that. I would strongly advise that you do not share that with anyone else. The other captains, Prefects, and Head Boy and Girl should be receiving letters by the end of the day so you will be able to use it as you please as of right now, should you so choose to.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

but i'm ready i'm standing on my own two feet Her Head of House acknowledged her presence without turning around. Professor Zabini was newer to the staff, but his presence commanded the same respect as a veteran professor in Addy's mind. Not that she was out to be on his bad side. In fact, any type of positive endorsement would be suitable for her future and especially now nearing the end of her final year at Hogwarts. And there was no doubt he knew her older sister, as she worked as an Auror and she knew that he’d come to teach from working at the Ministry. Without a beat, the moment he was done clearing the board, he quickly went into the reason she had been summoned, and at first, Addy wasn’t sure if she’d heard him correctly. Slytherin Quidditch Captain. Had it been anybody else giving her the news, Addy might have wondered what kind of prank this was. But considering who was handing her the shiny Captain’s badge, she knew it was anything but.
Still, his tone was hardly an excited one. And considering what a student would have to do to be stripped of such a title, she couldn’t imagine he would be happy about this. Addy felt she should feel happy, and she was. However, the victory wasn’t as sweet in such a situation. She was second. Exactly where she hated to be. ”Thank you, Professor.” Addy responded, trying to sound confident amidst her own growing confusion. Addy picked up the badge from the desk and inspected it. It was cold in her fingers, and she grabbed the paper that he referred to next. ”I understand.” She acknowledged her new privilege. Captains didn’t have the same ‘rank’ per se as a Prefect or the Head Girl or Boy, but a status came with the title. One she had craved and now had.
She supposed she should thank him again and leave, but her curiosity got the better of her. ”Professor…” Then again, if it involved a member of the Quidditch team, she supposed she should have some right to know something. ”What happened to Wendy?” She paused after asking, though remembered to add why she was asking. ”If she isn’t Captain anymore, I’m assuming she won't be playing, and I’ll need to replace a Chaser.” Addy would never have called herself friends with Wednesday Weekly, but in general, avoided her housemate if she could help it. Had it not been for Quidditch, she might have pretended she simply didn’t exist, but they weren’t going to win matches if she didn’t work with her fellow chaser either. It had been a balancing act of finding a way to work together without being friends.

▲ He knew there was going to be some confusion and questions that followed the sudden reassignment of the Quidditch captain, and he probably needed to address it in a house meeting by the end of the day before rumors went wild. But that was even more work to do, and kids would end up being kids. Regardless of what he said to the Slytherins, they would still go on to tell other students, and the wonderful game of telephone would distort the whole thing by the end of the week. The time for damage control was slipping away, especially for something as silly as the Weekly girl just wanting a change of pace and calling it quits with school. Children were horrid though, and it didn’t really matter what he said at the end of the day. At the same time, he did owe Slater an explanation, since it wouldn’t make sense to leave her wondering. If anything, it would be so the team could move on and get back to things with their new captain leading. “Miss Weekly has chosen to leave Hogwarts. While I’m not pleased with her decision, with graduation only a few months from now, it is ultimately her choice to do what she wants,” he explained. Imploring a student to stay when they didn’t want to was probably close to holding them against their will, and that was the last thing Blaise wanted to do. If she felt it imperative to not complete her education and to put all of her efforts towards her athletic career, he didn’t deem it necessary to stand in her way. He still found it foolish, but the time to debate that decision was long past now. “You will,” he answered the comment about needing a replacement Chaser. “I don’t believe the team currently has any reserve players, so if you need to block out a time on the practice pitch for try-outs, I can have that arranged.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

but i'm ready i'm standing on my own two feet Addy had fully expected Professor Zabini to tell her to mind her business, take the badge, and represent their House proudly in the Pitch. His no-nonsense attitude was something that she appreciated and an effective approach to things—at least when one wasn’t on the receiving end. But, this was a different situation. There would be questions from others aside from Addy herself, especially from the current team. However, the Professor hardly hesitated in his response, and Addy took a comment to register his words. She had left Hogwarts? Drop-outs were pretty rare statistically against the quantity of students that did manage to graduate, and it wasn’t what she had expected from Wendy. At least, it wasn’t a decision to made sense to Addy, and she figured her mother would actually faint if those words ever came out of Addy’s mouth at family dinner.
”No, we don’t. We will need to fill the opening before the end of the week. The next match is on the twenty-second.” And they would have a chance to practice the weekend before due to the planned trip to Hy-Brasil. There was so much to be done and accounted for and so very little time. But among the confusion of the sudden news, she didn’t feel the excitement she thought she would with the cold metal badge in her hand. Plus, she doubted Wendy left any of her notes regarding plays or any observations she may have had as Captain. ”Professor how far ahead are we allowed to book the Quidditch Pitch? We always had issues with double-booking in the past.” She could book the weekends. They were the optimal time to practice versus during the week when some of the student's brains were all but melting after a day of back-to-back classes. It didn’t happen to Addy, but she would prefer to finish her homework and prepare for practices.

▲ Two weeks and a weekend field trip that a large portion of the students would be before the next match wasn’t nearly enough time to get a new player trained and slotted into the proper position for the house team. While he had never played, he understood that managing things was definitely on the difficult end. At the very worst, Slytherin would simply have to grit their teeth and play with one player not up to snuff. He disliked it as much as his students would, but there was nothing any of them could do to fix that at this point. “Might I suggest reviewing the short-list from try-outs at the start of the year?” he offered, thinking of it in the moment. Pulling open a drawer in his desk and thumbing through a file that contained information he saved pertaining to house duties and likewise, he produced a list of names that he had been given in the fall. “While none of them stayed on as a reserve, they may be fine playing in the last few games. If not, feel free to post ads in the common room. Any year is fine as long as there are enough players in the air.” A body on a broom would be better than being a player short or forfeiting. Even though that was not preferable, it would never happen as long as he was head of Slytherin. Slater asked about the pitch in regards to scheduling out a time, and Blaise nodded his head. That always came into contention, and trying to get the other house teams to relent when something was absolutely necessary was difficult. Especially under these circumstances. “If neither of us can get a time free for the whole team, just you and the other Chaser would suffice for extra practice whomever joins you would need that anyways. And then normal practices per what you’re currently set at.” At the very least, splitting the pitch in half wouldn’t kill the other teams either. Surely they would want to see who their new competition could potentially be. “Should I need to intervene in order to have a full try-out completed, I will,” he assured her. “I seriously doubt the other heads will care if it means matches can continue without any problems.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

but i'm ready i'm standing on my own two feet Addy nodded. The Professor’s suggestion was what had popped into her mind next as she thought through her options. Suddenly there was so much that needed to be done with so many events coming up. One person came to mind, the triplets only had two members on the team, and the third had tried out but not made the cut the first time around. Even if she was easily distracted, she was a nice girl—but that might have to do for now. ”Yes, Professor.” Addy nodded in agreement. He provided her with a list, and she took it, reviewing the names—most of which she remembered from when they were filling open positions at the beginning of the year. She had taken turns with Wendy as they tried out Chasers, and Lulu took her post as Keeper.
It would likely be easy to book the pitch, as far as she knew, nobody actually booked it using the formal process, which would be to her advantage. Immediately thoughts raced through her mind, tasks organized into different buckets and by order of urgency. It was exciting, or at least she told herself it was exciting as she pushed down the butterflies in her stomach. It probably meant she couldn’t practice after her normal team practice with Cheese—that only gave her more butterflies, and she pushed the thought away. ”I don’t think it will be a problem.” Addy nodded confidently. With the badge in one hand and the list in the other, she felt she had all she needed. ”Professor—thank you for giving me this opportunity.” While Slater and humility were never quite used in the same sentence, she hoped it was a good sign that her Head of House had selected her when the Captain of the Flying Club was also on her team. Plus, it didn’t hurt to act grateful (though she was).

▲ From start to finish, this whole situation was a headache. Obviously it was beyond his control now, which frustrated him more than it should have, but at least Slater seemed to be a good sport about it all. There weren’t too many of his students that could easily transition from being a regular player into Captain at the literal drop of a hat. To him, that said a lot more about her character than it did the Weekly girl’s. While the latter was supposedly leaving to pursue her own career, there was quite a difference between the two seventh years. Slater understood and executed what she was being asked to do without second guessing it, whereas Weekly stubbornly lacked the foresight to see what she was doing to her fellow teammates and members of Slytherin. Ambition did have a limit, contrary to what some believed. There was a point where it became foolish to blindly follow what seemed to be desires and dreams, as diving head first in without first checking to see if the water was deep enough only had the potential to be devastating. But his time of teaching the Weekly girl any of that was long gone, and if she thought leaving school with only a few months left was what suited her best, then so be it. Thankfully he had students that were willing to take up the reigns in her stead, and he wished there had been a chance to see it in action earlier than now. “Yes well, if I had the ability to see the future, I would have tried to prevent this from needing to be done in the first place. Clearly you care about the team and Slytherin, and that says more about your character than it does for other, absent parties.” It was a hassle and a pain to have to do this now, and he was irritated that it had never been brought up with him until everything was said and done. Trying to scramble the house team together in this manner was poor for moral and gave the other houses an opportunity to strike when Slytherin was at a disadvantage. He had the feeling that Slater understood that and he only wished he had placed her as Captain from the beginning. “If you ever need a recommendation written, let me know,” Blaise left the offer hanging as the new Slytherin Captain left the classroom.
