monsters walk around how did silence get so loud? Staring at her empty butterbeer mug, Evelyn watched her friends rise from the table and exit. They’d invited her along to their monthly trip to Honeydukes, but she’d declined. If there was ever a moment to be alone, it would be this moment. Even with the bustling crowd of other students and their friends or family or whoever and the buzz of all the conversation around her—Evelyn felt like she could breathe. It was a strange feeling. To feel actually alone despite the crowd, but she’d grown accustomed to it. The stability she’d relied on so heavily in her life was gone, and the adjustment had been difficult and incomplete. Sarah was still in her life, but not without putting strain on the entire family dynamic.
Still, Mina said she would try to come by the village if she didn’t end up working, and Evelyn had not seen her since January and before she’d resumed the school year. A part of Ev wanted to be closer to all her sisters than before, especially since their brother was gone. She pushed the handle of her mug, so it rotated slowly around in a circle. It kept her occupied while she ran around in circles in her mind, but every now and then, she’d glance at the entrance to see if her sister would walk in. Plus, she wanted another butterbeer, but if she left her seat, she’d certainly lose it if there wasn’t someone around to hold it for her.

▲ Luck. That was what Mina called today’s occurrence at Flourish & Blotts. The new employee that had been hired during the holidays as extra help and decided to stay on after the fact showed up on accident for a shift that didn’t technically exist for them. Since the owner wasn’t around, Mina may have fudged the schedule with a flick of her wand, and instead taken the opening for tomorrow. Realistically, that worked out better for both of them because after a little probing of her coworker, she realized that she actually needed the day off and the same for the coworker the next day. Easy enough, really. Shoving her arms into her jacket as she pranced out of the bookstore, Mina refused to look back in case minds were changed, and instantly disapparated from Diagon Alley and to Hogsmeade. Promises were made a lot to her younger sister, and more often than not, they were broken. That wasn’t always entirely Mina’s fault, as she had been the only employee at the bookstore after all, and she needed to work. A lot of her friends didn’t really understand that she couldn’t just pull money out of thin air (despite her magic), and that had caused a splintering over the last few years. Now she felt bad when she shirked her visits with Evelyn, but it wasn’t like she could help it. Work was work, and committing to that showed that she was at least attempting to be a proper, working adult – something her parents still questioned at times despite having been at the bookstore for a couple of years now. Sure, it wasn’t a commitment to the Ministry or St. Mungo’s, but they knew better than to force her to take up a job that she was going to be miserable in. Selling books was fun! Why no one else saw it that way was beyond her. Squeezing her way through the door to the Three Broomsticks, Mina first made her way to the bar, ordering herself a firewhisky, a butterbeer for her sister despite not knowing if she wanted one yet, and two shots of tequila. Anything muggle ordered at the Broomsticks always raised eyebrows, especially on a Hogsmeade weekend, but Mina had been there enough that they knew her deal. She forked over the coins and did her best barmaid impression as she moved across the floor, trying to spot her sister, only bumping into a few students along the way. “Evvvy!” she crooned as she finally spotted the youngest Oliveira sitting on her own at a table, an empty mug in front of her. “Hope you can drink another,” Mina added as she set the butterbeer down onto the table, and sneakily slid one of the shot glasses in front of it. “If you want it,” she shrugged as she took her own seat across from her sister, and immediately downed her shot and followed it up with a hearty swig of the firewhisky. Not the best combination, but who cared? MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

monsters walk around how did silence get so loud? Her sisters all worked, so Evelyn understood those commitments, but it didn’t stop the wave of disappointment that often came over her when she didn’t see them. Many of her friends had older siblings that had long since graduated, and it didn’t seem to bother them that they didn’t see them, but maybe her family had just grown up differently in that way. Plus, things seemed to keep happening all around them, and in the magical world as a whole, seeing her sisters was a sure way to know they were okay. Looking up, she spotted a dark-haired girl with bright blue eyes waltzing over with several drinks in her hand. Mina. Evelyn might have smiled, but she was distracted by the number of drinks her sister seemed to be bringing to the table.
”Hey, Mina.” Evelyn greeted her older sister. She’d spent the most time with Mina due to their age, even if she might have been closer to Sarah most of the time. But there was something contagious about her personality as well. Ev sat up in her chair. She’d slumped down while she had been waiting and pulled the butterbeer closer to her while pushing the empty mug aside. But then Mina placed a smaller glass in front of her, and without even leaning forward, she could smell it—tequila. Evelyn looked down at the shot before looking back at her sister. In this light, her eyes looked about as blue as Mina’s. Well, she was of age now technically. Really the only person that would have protested would have been Callisto, but she wasn’t around at the moment. Mina didn’t wait to take her shot, and Evelyn figured, why not?
Picking up the small glass, she tried not to focus on the strong smell as she brought it to her lips. The taste was awful, but she forced herself to drink it all. It burned unpleasantly, and she had the urge to spit it out, but she forced it down. Her face scrunched up as she immediately reached for her butterbeer to hopefully wash the taste out. It helped, but it still lingered. Ev’s eyes watered a tiny bit as she tried to return her face to normal. ”How do you drink that?” She finally asked, her voice a little bit hoarse from the shot. While Evelyn wasn’t a stranger to firewhiskey, she’d tried it a handful of times it wasn’t something she came across, often preferring her butterbeer. She took another hearty sip, waiting for the taste to leave her mouth.

▲ A stupid grin danced across Mina’s face as she watched her younger sister eyeball and then sniff the shot glass that had been sneakily placed on the other side of the butterbeer mug. Tequila absolutely wasn’t for everyone, and she only realized then that Evelyn wasn’t her, and hopefully wasn’t an alcoholic either. Mina had tried to attempt that during her final year at Hogwarts, and it was honestly too difficult to keep up with when it came to sneaking bottles in and out of the castle. Plus, who wanted to show up to class hungover, or worse, still drunk? Sneaking cigarettes and weed was infinitely easier anyways, and it didn’t hurt as much to make those disappear during a search as losing a handle of whiskey did. And if she wanted to be completely honest, the school already had her on their shit-list by her seventh year, so pushing her luck wasn’t exactly the smartest thing in the world for her to do. Evelyn quickly drank the shot, and Mina snorted at her reaction to it. “Practice,” she answered earnestly as she scooped the second shot glass up and placed it inside of her own. “It’s a lot better in mixed drinks, to be honest.” Tequila for her was usually the nightcap, and if she was feeling really bold with nothing to do the next day, her preferred method of blacking out. There was nothing a couple shots of it couldn’t fix. She took another long, burning swig of firewhisky as she watched Evelyn with her own butterbeer. Based on how she had reacted to the shot, she was probably trying to wash the taste down now. Mina remembered those failed attempts fondly. “So do I ask how school is going, or do you just want to skip that?” she asked. Personally, she never liked getting hung up on all the learning and Hogwarts stuff. It was always the same, and seemed like such a standard conversation starter. “Shoot. I should’ve brought Titania with me! I didn’t even think of that…” Mina said suddenly. “I got out of work and immediately came here…” To be fair, her dog would probably be a huge pain the ass like usual, so maybe it was a good thing she was still at home. monsters walk around how did silence get so loud? Evy was actually no stranger to whiskey or firewhiskey. Lulu had snuck it up to the girl's dorm before, and so had others. But the hangover was not ideal when trying to focus in Defense Against the Dark Arts class. And something about Professor Zabini’s glare made her feel like he knew exactly what had happened. Mina seemed amused though she hadn’t even flinched at taking the shot, Evy’s face was still a bit contorted as she waited for the burn to pass as it mixed with the warmth of the Butterbeer. It was an interesting combination.
She shook her head slightly and drank a large amount of Butterbeer. ”How? Wouldn’t a mixed drink taste better?” One eyebrow raised slightly in confusion but also curiosity. She paused a moment though, it was her first time trying tequila. ”That was worse than whiskey, honestly.” After another moment, Evy pushed the shot glass further away from her. She could still feel the smell of the alcohol sting in her nostrils, her brow furrowed, and her nose wrinkled slightly.
Her grey eyes locked with her sister’s blue ones. Sarah always asked her about school but never in the same tone that Callisto or their mother would. It was strange to have Mina ask her about it since even as a first-year, Evy noted that education was not a huge priority for Mina. ”I can summarize.” Evelyn offered. ”I’m passing, should be able to manage a few NEWTs next year.” Nothing stellar but enough to find some kind of manageable job after she graduated. At the mention of Titania Evy’s eyebrows perked up a bit. Titania was a fluffy dog Ev adored, but she probably would of any cuddly pet. ”Erm—well maybe next time?” They visited the village once a month, and maybe her schedule would permit it.

▲ How most practiced drinking and specifically how Mina had practiced drinking, were two very different ways to approach alcohol. The first was starting way younger than was either legal or safe, and then developing a bad habit that often times made her codependent on it. That had gone away now but those first two years out of Hogwarts were real rough. She didn’t need to tell Evy that though because she was sure her sister had heard it all from their parents already. Things not to do 101 in the Oliveira household: don’t be Mina and definitely don’t be Sarah. Both of them really scrapped rock bottom for a while and Mina was pretty sure she came out on top between the two of them by the end. Not that her nephew was an accident or a poor decision, but Sarah should not be a parent by any stretch of the word. At all. “Well duh, whiskey is meant to be sipped and experienced. Tequila is if you want something fruity and alcoholic, or a nice punch to the face at three in the morning so you can stumble home. Works for me every time.” Not that she hadn’t done shots of rail whiskey before. That stuff had a real flavor to it that was almost on par with its equally cheap tequila counterpart. But it was better to get her sister to understand which ones were good and what ones weren’t early on. Finding out Grand Marnier wasn’t supposed to be drank by the bottle first thing in the morning of a five-day bender in New Orleans absolutely was not the way to go about life. Buzzed, not white girl wasted. It was all fun and games until it was a trip to the emergency room because muggles got scared too easily. “And where did you get whiskey?” Mina asked in a hushed tone. “Good for you!”Broaching the subject of school was always weird for her because she honestly had no reason to question or criticize how others were doing in it. Her own failures and close expulsion during her time at Hogwarts had taught her that. “Nice! I think I only took one NEWT. Barely passed…” Was it Charms or Transfiguration? It had only been a few years but she had cared so little for her time at school that it was basically all gone now. Trying to escape that part of the conversation by bringing up her dog wasn’t super effective, and upon realizing that she could just bring Titania the following month, it also meant that she would have to find a way to physically get the dog there. She couldn’t remember if animals could be apparated alongside their owners, or if it would have to be an extremely messy and annoying trip by Floo Powder. Both sounded too much of a hassle to her already. “Maybe! She misses you, you know. Sometimes I catch her staring out the apartment window longingly, waiting for your return,” Mina joked before taking another long and well-deserved sip of her drink. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

monsters walk around how did silence get so loud? Evelyn knew her sister liked to drink. It just seemed to be a family hobby at some point, though she didn’t recall her brother ever taking it to the same extent. Plus she’d heard stories from her older classmates that had known her sister. Many stories had traveled down about all her older siblings, though Callisto’s were hardly exciting. Inadvertently, Evy had just admitted to trying whiskey beforehand. Typically it was the random shot of tequila or something Mina would get for her, though it would be less necessary as Evy got older. ”I—one of the girls had some once…in the dorms.” Really, if you wanted whiskey or something you weren’t supposed to have, your best bet was a sixth or seventh-year Slytherin.
But it really depended. Maybe the next time she went to bother Nate in his corner of the Common Room, she’d ask if he knew where tequila could be found in the Castle. Not that Evy wanted the hangover she’d heard about, but she was curious nonetheless. Mina didn’t seem to mind that Evy didn’t exactly follow all the rules. Then again, even Sarah was bound to lecture her more often than her next oldest sister ever would. Evy knew better than to mention that. She’d learned very quickly that there were topics not to bring up with Mina. ”So which one do you prefer?” Evy asked, just making conversation at this point as she drank more Butterbeer to cover the lingering aftertaste of the shot.
Evy shrugged. She still wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted to do with her life though anything that seemed remotely interesting actually didn’t require a lot of NEWTs. She’d hardly been on the right path for anything as glamorous as Auror training, nor was she interested in such a career. Evy rolled her eyes. ”Yes, I’m sure she asks for me by name too.” Her reply was flat. The sarcasm seemed to simply run in their veins, but she’d also spent years watching her much older siblings interact with one another. Their personalities were so different that one could wonder they were even related except for whatever features they shared. Evy had light eyes as Mina did but not the darker hair, though one would never confuse them for anything but sisters.

▲ Ooh dorm drinking! That had always been fun, though she had personally started that earlier than was commonly practiced at Hogwarts. Like, end of third year early. A bottle of cheap red wine had been smuggled out of the liquor cabinet at home during Christmas and hidden inside a pair of oversized wool socks. In the later years, she was sure that her roommates had gotten tired of her and Rue being in altered states, and sometimes even in different phases of inebriation. What happened in the dorm room stayed in the dorm room, unless something bad occurred. Being poorly from a hangover could easily be masked with a Weasley product, and the ones that made you vomit were a great way to get all the alcohol out of the stomach. She sort of hated that they were used for that when it would have been funnier on annoying younger students, but it was what it was. The other option was waking up still drunk and stumbling up into the Great Hall looking like a mess. Hogwarts was fun. Good times. "Nice." That was all Mina could utter while she reminisced. In terms of alcohol preference, that was difficult. "Depends on what state I want to be in. If I'm having an early night, anything I can take my time with. So, whiskey. But if I'm out with Rue, we're drinking whatever gets us fucked up the fastest." She realized after she said it, but it came out crude and pretty trashy. Enough nights had been spent practically drooling on bar counters at last call, stumbling home and barely making it into her bed. And not to mention all the horrid decisions she'd made in bringing people home with her. Hindsight was twenty-twenty for a reason, but she cringed thinking about a few of them. Callisto was right about that at least. "Firewhisky is nice in our pubs though. And hard butterbeer if they've got that." The latter being loaded with sugar and calories. But who was counting those when they drank? "She does!" Mina doubled down on her dog's apparent ability to speak. "You know, in that staring out the window longingly way when you aren't around." Or maybe because she could see squirrels in the tree branches outside the flat window. Being on the third floor gave Titania a completely different perspective that most dogs didn't get otherwise. "I'll bring her round more often when I visit mum and dad. She listens better when she doesn't have to deal with me all day." Getting tossed scraps from the dinner table probably helped a bit with that too. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

monsters walk around how did silence get so loud? Sometimes Evelyn forgot it was Mina she was speaking to. The one sister would judge her the least for any rule-breaking shenanigans while at school. That didn’t mean she would tell her everything. Evy was entitled to some privacy after all. But it was a habit to not say much. She didn’t want some lecture from Callisto at letting slip she was underage drinking on occasion. ”Don’t tell mum.” Evy blurted out defensively. ”She’d probably homeschool me if she found out.” Though someone needed to remind their mother that she had a bit of a wine problem herself, it wouldn't be Evy saying anything.
But their mother had grown a little despondent and a little more overprotective since Dakoda had died—so who could blame her? Evy raised an eyebrow at Mina’s response. She spoke so clearly like a Professor spoke about their subject. She made a face at the thought of anything more potent than the shot she’d just taken. ”I’ll stick to whiskey, I think.” Evy muttered, drinking more of her butterbeer. But her face quickly shifted to one of clear doubt when speaking about Mina’s dog. ”Right…” Though if Titania had suddenly learned the ability to speak, it wasn’t as if Evy was up to date on any of her older sister’s lives. She was just the youngest sibling, stuck at school.
”Well, I’ll be home for Easter. I think Mum has Sebastian then, too.” Or Evy hoped so. The one person who was always overjoyed when Evelyn would go home, aside from the dogs. Evy’s phone buzzed in her pocket, and she pulled it out to check why. A new message arrived, which she read quickly and locked her phone again. ”I have to head back up to the Castle.” Evy drank the rest of her butterbeer—she still could taste the alcohol in her mouth. ”Tell Titania to call me when she learns complete sentences.” She said with heavy sarcasm as she stood up.
