The days in Sweden were gradually growing longer as the darkness of December slowly faded away. Simon was relieved for more sunshine, the cold made him tired and grumpy. And bloody hell, the wind chill felt like daggers on his face when he played quidditch. It was a bit ironic for a vampire to enjoy the sun..

Since training with the Marauders and the National Team, he felt like his quidditch career was at the highest point its ever been. He was proud of where he was at and how much work he put into himself and his work. It seemed that people were starting to forget his stint of bad behavior the previous year...so that alone was a reason to celebrate. But there was also another reason..

Today was Simons 20th Birthday. He couldn’t believe that today he was no longer be a teenager. There was a different layer of responsibility he needed to maintain as a twenty year old man.

It was Thursday but he was able to get the evening and following day off of practice as a reward, since everyone on the Marauders knew he was a simp for his girlfriend. Luna was able to work something out too, so he was over the moon to see his girlfriend in the middle of the week. All he really wanted to do was spend time with her, he didn’t care what they did. All that mattered that he was with her. Over the weekend he'd surely get into his fair share of celebrating with his friends, and hopefully Luna. Although he couldn't help but notice that she did seem pretty short with him the past couple of weeks...he assumed it was because the Harpies were working her hard. They were known as some of the hardest training players in the quidditch world.

Simon busied himself by fluffing a pillow in his already tidied flat because he thought Luna would pop by at some point, even if it were just for a birthday booty call. He lit a couple of candles for ~ambiance and uncorked a bottle of wine, pouring a generous glass before flickering on a random Jimi Hendrix playlist. As he took his first sip and started to scroll on his phone, he realized it was pretty lame to be drinking alone on his birthday. Luna would hopefully be there at any moment.

Luna had been feeling extraordinarily conflicted since she’d had her vision of Simon and Claudia. She knew that it was true - her visions had never lied to her before. Though she constantly reminded herself that she shouldn’t jump to conclusions and that surely Simon would speak to her about it and provide context. The key sticking point was that she tried to tell herself that - but for some reason her mind refused to conflate the information. It caused her to be rather distant when conversing with her boyfriend. Luna didn’t really have the energy to speak to him, or pretend to be nice whilst inside she was seething.

For the days passed, but Simon said nothing of his secret meeting with Claudia. They’d certainly seemed familiar to one another - more so than past flames. Luna hadn’t forgotten the time at Hogwarts when Simon had passed her up for Claudia, insisting that she was the one. Luna had thought Simon was over this nonsense with Claudia, who was toxic for all intents and purposes. Yet Simon’s continued silence spoke volumes.

Long before this conflict of interests, Luna had been granted two days of leave to spend a long weekend in Malmo with her boyfriend. Luna had briefly entertained the idea of making up an excuse not to go. She didn’t think she was in the right headspace to be around Simon right now. And it was his birthday. She had to be nice. But in the end, logic had won out and Luna forced calm upon herself. They could talk about this mess tomorrow. Even if Simon didn’t think there was anything to talk about.

After spending ten minutes affirming that she was doing the right thing, Luna took a portkey to the address Simon had sent her. He’d usually come back to the UK whenever he could, for which Luna only felt slightly guilty. It was where their life together had started. But despite her reservations, Luna was looking forward to seeing Simon’s flat. With a glow of blue light and a hook behind her belly button, Luna swept through time and space and arrived with a flash at Simon’s.

The old hairbrush dropped to the floor and Luna shifted her bag on her shoulder as she took in her first impression of Simon’s abode. It was, without a doubt, a bachelor pad. She wanted to frown, but Luna instead plastered a smile on her face. It felt forced, but she turned and spotted her boyfriend. Her blood boiled - he looked so innocent and carefree. Did he not realise his betrayal? ”Happy birthday, Simon,” said Luna, approaching him and opening her arms to her boyfriend, dropping a kiss on his cheek. She glanced towards the coffee table. ”Shall I help myself?” asked Luna, nodding towards the wine.

It wasn’t long until Luna appeared in the living room with a pop. He shot up from the sofa and took a couple strides toward her. ”Hey Babe!” he greeted, happy to see her. Luna wished him a very unenthused happy birthday, opening her arms and kissing him on the cheek as if they were mates. ”Thanks” he said slowly. The lack of affection caught him off guard, leaving him feeling empty. He would have summoned her a glass of wine quicker, but he was racking his brain for any memory of what had done wrong that week. Maybe he didn't respond to that one text..shit.

Simon chuckled, trying to put on a careless facade, but his heart ached by her already bad attitude. He wasn't the type to use his birthday as an excuse to be nice, but fuck, that hurt. Simon leaned forward and planted a kiss on her lips, trying to match her icy gaze. 

Picking up the glass, Simon quirked a slightly suspisious brow at his beloved girlfriend.”You okay?” he asked carefully as he filled the glass with a couple of dramatic sloshes before extending the glass toward her. Maybe she had a bad day...

Simon's usual puppy-like greeting soured Luna's stomach, but she thought she managed a brave face. The brightness in his eyes dimmed slightly as she greeted him less than warmly. She had to try harder. He looked momentarily confused, and Luna's inner turmoil roiled even more ferociously. Maybe she should say something now? No, she would ruin his birthday.

When Simon kissed her on the lips, Luna forced herself to respond with more enthusiasm. She even looped an arm around his neck and snuck a bit of tongue in there. Merlin, even after all this time, she tingled when he kissed her. But the feeling was quickly snuffed out as she wondered if Claudia had felt the same way. Her insides curdled, but Luna ran a hand down Simon's arm and gave his hand a squeeze.

Of course, ever attentive Simon had sniffed out her attitude. "Oh, yeah. Why wouldn't I be?" said Luna, shooting him back a questioning look. Was her voice higher than usual? Or was that just her paranoid mind. He poured her a tall glass of wine and desperate for something to do, anything really, Luna took it and took two massive gulps. She paused, then took another long drink. Then she settled down on the sofa, still looking around. It was a nice place - again, for a single bloke.

"So... done anything fun yet today?" asked Luna lamely. She checked her watch. She'd made a booking at an Asian fusion restaurant that had rave reviews for his birthday. Surely, once they were under public scrutiny, he wouldn't be so suspicious of her. Not that Simon deserved to be suspicious at all - he was the one who was... who was fraternising with the enemy! "Dinner's at eight, so we have a bit. Maybe we could go out for a drink?" asked Luna, feeling itchy at the thought of potentially sitting in the same spot as Claudia. Luna sprung to her feet, and wandered around the flat under the guise of curiosity.

Lunas demeanor made him uncomfortable. Simon couldn't quite place it but something was off between them. He tried to dismiss the attitude to adjustments at work, family troubles, and/or maybe her visions. But today he wanted to be selfish. He was disappointed she couldn’t even fake it for one day. This was his second birthday without Sofia.

His head tilted to the side and he stared at his beloved girlfriend silently after she asked why she would be okay. Simon decided to take a sip of wine instead of answering her with the same amount of attitude. "Hm. I don't know..." Simon sighed, slowly feeling his irritation with her growing.

She seemed disinterested as she asked about his day. ”I went out to lunch with my team mates.” Simon answered her, obviously thinking about something else, probably being anywhere but there in that moment. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife. Luna seemed to be squirming in her skin just by looking at him. Simon finished his glass hoping it would help him get through the night with a sourpuss Luna. Maybe they just needed a change of scenery. "Lets just go for drinks now.” he suggested, icy saucers falling on Luna to observe her expression.

The paranoia was growing within Luna, having started as a seed and sprouting uncontrollably. She just wanted to know - why had Simon even entertained Claudia? She'd been so sure that stain of a girl was in the past. Yet she knew she had to put on a brave face for Simon - it was his twentieth birthday, after all. But Luna knew that she'd need a few more distractions in order to keep herself from exploding with fury. So she asked what he had done during the day, but she didn't really listen. Instead, she suggested they go for a drink to start things off.

It was with relief that Simon accepted and Luna nodded. She held out her hand to Simon and they apparated to the city centre to find a cute bar nearby the restaurant. The pair entered a dimly lit bar with neon uplighting, the trendy decor at odds with the cobbled streets they walked in from. Luna glanced at Simon, his face half shadowed, and her stomach flipped. She hated this sort of uncertainty. Hadn't they been through so much together? "You sit, I'll get the wine," said Luna, hitching a smile onto her face. She searched his countenance, and it was as if nothing was wrong. Except maybe he was a bit suspicious of why she was acting weirdly.

Luna ordered a bottle of wine and brought it to the table. The tension between the pair hadn't dissipated with the change of scenery. If anything, it had increased. Luna's stomach churned uncomfortably. "Simon... look, you haven't... you haven't seen anyone from school lately. Being here and busy with practice...?" asked Luna, her gaze finally meeting his and holding it for longer than a second. This was his chance. To explain what she'd seen. She hoped he would take it, even if she wished none of it was true.

Simon took a seat after Luna insisted she'd grab the wine. He thought that was kind of weird but dismissed the thought and fell into a seat, hoping the wine would be an antidote to her shitty attitude.

Luna returned to the table with two full glasses. "Thanks Babe" he accepted it, filling his mouth with wine to soothe his rising anger and nerves. Simon held her gaze she asked him if he had seen anyone from school lately. The way she stared at him instantly made him feel like a criminal, now he was starting to feel guilty.

”No..not really.” he answered, his confusion growing. Not considering the instance when he told Claudia to fuck off for interrupting practice with the Marauders. Hell, he drank himself stupid to forget about it so he'd never have to bring it up to Luna, praying his teammates would never say anything. Simon swallowed another mouthful of wine, taking a breath and exhaling as his eyes fell on his girlfriend, challenging her gaze. ”Luna, you’re acting weird. What do you mean by that?” he asked her, no longer willing to beat around the bush.

Luna excused herself to get them a bottle of wine, and also to get a hold on her emotions. This was Simon's birthday. It didn't matter that he was keeping things from her - not today. She had to get herself under control. She thanked the bartender, then brought the wine and bottle to the table, pouring them each a healthy glass. Luna was going to need it, and apparently Simon was too, as he took a massive gulp.

Luna's gaze kept drifting back to Simon, calculating. Would he dish out the truth? Finally, Luna cracked, and asked if Simon had seen any of his old friends from Hogwarts. He answered, but not in the way she'd expected. Luna took another big sip of wine, trying to quell the scream that was building in the back of her throat. "No one?" she hedged, gripping her glass of wine so hard, it was quivering.

Clenching her jaw, Luna tried to remain calm. She placed her glass down on the table and knotted her fingers in her lap as not to wring Simon's neck for lying to her. "I know you have. I know you saw Claudia," she accused, her voice steadier than she expected it to be with the storm brewing within her. "Why did you have to lie, Simon? I thought we were past that. But clearly not, if you're still making excuses to see her."

Simons jaw tensed as he observed Luna closely. The glass in her hand quivered as she looked at him with disgust. Simon drained the entirety of his glass, not really caring about the repercussions, now he needed an escape from reality...

The half vamps face twisted with a mixture of confusion, anger, and hurt when she brought up Claudias name. That’s when it clicked. She must have heard or seen something with her vision. But she saw wrong! The interaction was a mere 30 seconds out of his day and honestly he tried to forget all about it. That wasn't a good idea after all... 

Simon inflated with irritation, eyebrows lacing at the center of his forehead. ”You saw?..” he scoffed, shaking his head out of disbelief and frustration. Because she was wrong. ”Well, in your little daydream did you see when I told her to fuck off and get lost?” he asked acidly, knowing the choice of words were harsh and childish but he didn't care because he was hurt.

Simon's scoff broke whatever dam had held back Luna's barely leashed answer. "Yes. I saw. And you weren't quite so dismissive when I saw that necromancy ceremony. Nor when I saw that stalker jerk himself off to me," she spat. She felt small, like she'd been thrown back five years in her life. The middle triplet, with the least useful power. To only see what was happening as it happened, no advance notice nor any sort of glimpse into the past. Simon's scornful reply tore back years of growth and acceptance. It was like whatever love they had share had vanished.

"I saw her in your flat," Luna continued, her tone coated in venom. "I can't for the life of me imagine what she'd be doing in there, you indecent incubus!" her voice was rising, without her meaning it to. They were drawing attention from the other patrons. "An invitation like that doesn't seem like get lost to me. Or are you versed in some language I'm not familiar with? Perhaps it doesn't even need words," she accused, her face turning puce as she unleased her rage. "Why couldn't you just tell me?! We're supposed to trust each other, Simon! And you... you're fraternising with the enemy! Who's to say you won't choose her over me again?"

Simon took a breath in through his nostrils to tame the inner rage that was rising. He couldn’t believe that Luna was being so nasty to him. People were starting to turn their heads to see what all of the ruckus was about, noticing their fight escalating as she called him names. This was one of Simons worst fears coming to life...all over again. He couldn't ruin his good track record with the Malmo Marauders. Not tonight.

But more hurtful words fell from Lunas lips... Her reality clashed with his, sending his head to spin. Simon felt like he was being completely mind fucked by the person he loved the most. Is this what being gaslighted was like?!

Simons icy saucers narrowed at Luna in disbelief. ”I’m not talking to anyone!” he bellowed, raising his hands in the air out of frustration. He was ready to punch a wall. Simon tried to steady his voice, but he was steaming with anger. ”Luna, you saw wrong.” he told her gruffly. ”Nothing happened. She showed up at the stadium and I told her to leave. I didn’t bring it up to you because I knew you would overreact like this. It was nothing.” Simon tried to explain in a calm demeanor but his heart was beating rapidly out of his chest since he felt the entire restaurant staring at them. Some people were even chuckling, causing his embarrassment to seep in.

Luna flinched. "Stop shouting, you're causing a scene," she managed to hiss, despite her being the one to escalate. "My visions haven't been wrong before. I saw that Purifier coming to burn down Hogwarts and duel Professor Zabini. I saw Kings Cross as it exploded. I see things as they happen - and I saw Claudia, looking in that mirror in the front vestibule of your flat!" Luna exclaimed, fighting back the tears that were now threatening to fall. "Of course it matters Simon!" she added, exasperated.

How did they end up like this, Luna wondered. What had made Simon think something to do with Claudia wouldn't be a big deal? After everything they had gone through together? How Simon had discarded her like a used tissue to go crawling back to Claudia? Luna was, after all, only human. She had fears and weaknesses like everyone else. Luna wanted to stomp her foot. "I am not overreacting!" In hindsight, Luna would be able to appreciate that she was indeed overreacting, considering Simon had, as he claimed, done nothing wrong. "You're negging me!"

Simon hated how angry he could get. It was poison and only caused more arguments and conflict. Unfortunately, there was no getting through Luna tonight, she already convinced herself of the her “truth”. Simon was hurt and upset that she would take him somewhere public to fight it out. That was the last thing he needed for his rocky reputation.

”I hear you, but you’re completely wrong.” he stated simply, shaking his head in denial. Simons chair screeched as he got up to dismiss himself. ”Nope. Fuck this." he deadpanned almost comically, though he wasn't trying to be funny. "You're negging me! I’m not doing this here, Luna.” he seethed, watching his girlfriends face closely. He was expecting her to throw the glass of wine in his face as a birthday present at this point.

The half vamp swallowed hard, pushing back tears because everything was so unexpected and fucked. But Simon would rather be caught dead before being featured on the Nosey Witch crying. If it had to be Luna on the front page with the crocodile tears, so be it...

Shrugging on his coat hastily, Simon attempted to keep his voice low and level. ”I love you so fucking much, Luna. I'd never do anything to hurt you. I thought we were past all that.” he breathed, hands shaking out of anger as he turned on his heel started to leave.

Never had Luna experienced a false vision. Therefore, the fact that she had seen Claudia in Simon's flat, that meant it had to be true. She had nearly twenty years of experience with this. So why was Simon on the verge of tears? Why did she upset him so much on his birthday? They had two, totally opposite, totally true accounts. So why didn't it match up? "I saw it..." said Luna, though the seed of guilt had been planted low in her bellow. "So it had to be true!" Luna couldn't understand how Simon expected her to just believe him over her own inner eye.

"I love you Simon, but how am I supposed to trust you? You're out here, living your fantastic life and seeing exes and I'm just... not here!" she exclaimed, tears coursing down her cheeks. She hated crying. She'd always told herself she'd never cry over Simon again. "Love isn't enough," she said, her voice cracking. Simon was literally shaking as he stood up and turned to leave. And Luna said nothing, quivering with suppressed sobs as she watched the love of her life walk away from her. Perhaps forever.

Simon was overwhelmed with embarrassment and rage. Lunas last words were the cherry on top to the golden shit sundae, stating that “love wasn’t enough”. His expression fell, completely caught off guard. His eyes locked with hers as sadness intensely prickled his gut. It was a kick in the stomach for the love of his life to say such hurtful things.

Wordlessly Simon headed to the entrance of the bar, shoulder checking a security guard as they told him to leave - because he was already leaving. Simon picked up his pace down the bustling street until he stepped into the alleyway and apparated back to his flat.

All he wanted to do was drink himself into oblivion to forget everything. He knew his teammates loved a reason to drink so he’d surround himself in better company to distract himself from heartache.

Simon knew he wasn’t completely innocent for not bringing up Claudia’s attempt, but he knew that Luna would have reacted in some sort of way. For now, his hate for Claudia only grew for ruining the best thing he had in his life.
