James felt restless. Nobody gave him a second look as he haphazardly stacked forms on his desk. Maybe they would fall over, or maybe they wouldn’t. The unfortunate side effect of so much time on Hy-Brasil was that James was egregiously behind on his paperwork. That, in combination with standard rotations, meant James had not set foot on Hy-Brasil for four straight weeks. James finished up notes in a file, skimmed over it again, and when he felt it was sufficient, he signed it and closed it, tossing it among the rest. The week had been filled with long days and plenty of overtime, which meant James was far too tired when he got home to feel anything.

But on the days that hadn’t completely drained him, he managed to stare into invisible holes in his ceiling, thinking about one person. Fortunately, they could exchange letters but it wasn’t the same. There was nothing like carefully cozying up in the hammock near her home or walking among the many paths and trails she knew by heart to more of her favorite secret spots. Where they could talk and only the calming sound of a waterfall in the background. Plus, James liked to find moments to make her blush unexpectedly because it also caused her hair color to shift.

Unfortunately, arguing with his superiors on his assignments would only bring suspicion. And if they were to find out one of their Hit Wizards was having an affair with the High Druid—well, there would be many gasps to start. So, it had taken all of James’ willpower not to argue, but he managed to ask more about his assignment, and at least he was due back to Hy-Brasil at some point. Due to the secrecy, James couldn’t talk to anyone about it, either. But when there was a lull in the day, it hit James how much he missed her. And the office's quiet in the evening made it more difficult to focus on his paperwork. Sighing heavily, James opened another folder and lazily flipped through the pages.

Finn had taken an extended leave during the Christmas holidays to go back to New York. She had worked herself into the ground the last few years between everything that came with the Auror job and the new one where she was teaching. While it was definitely a break from the normal craziness, she still wasn't sure what she wanted. Home was always calling her back and MACUSA had all but guaranteed her a cushy spot if she returned stateside. But, she enjoyed being in the UK. Having less overview worked better for her, despite her supervisors not enjoying it much. They were the ones that begged her to come back when they needed more wands. As far as she was concerned, they worked for her wants and needs. At least until someone over there free a pair and finally cut her off.

During her break, she'd managed to scoop up some of her favorite candies and brought them back with her. Today's choice was a bag of Twizzlers, and Finn had spent the day wandering around to her coworkers and offering up the red vines to them. Some accepted, others balked at the idea of eating American candy. She made sure to tell them it was their loss, before shoving another between her teeth.

Eventually, she made it to the hit wizards. Her target? James Potter. He'd been out and about on work for quite a while now, usually off on Hy-Brasil. The lucky bastard. Finn hadn't been given the chance yet, as MACUSA and the druids weren't really cool with one another in the same way that the Ministry sort of was. "Not with your princess today?" she said as she stopped in front of James's desk and held the open bag of Twizzlers out to him.

James could smell the candy before he could see it. His eyes looked up from the file to the large bag a familiar redhead held out to him. ”What are these?” He asked curiously. Perhaps some new concoction from Honeydukes. It couldn’t have been from his Uncle’s shop, or Lily would have brought these to him a long time ago. Carefully retrieving one, he tried not to look incredibly shocked at the question. ”Erm—princess?” His brow furrowed as his heart skipped a beat. Of course, Finn was speaking about Fae, but James didn’t want to give away anything.

Inspecting the candy, James marveled at its simple appearance. ”It sort of looks like a rope—does it act like one?” Assuming this was magical candy, of course. Merlin, he could see the wonder in his grandfather’s eyes already. Arthur Weasley had always encouraged curiosity in his grandchildren, much to the annoyance of Molly. ”Haven’t seen you around for a bit.” James commented. Maybe Finn had gotten sent off to Hy-Brasil while James sat here and slowly caught up on paperwork. She had been placed in her protection detail in the past when James was pulled for his actual work as well. Finn and Finnigan.

”Licorice,” Finn air-quoted with the hand that had one of the candy ropes dangling from it, half-chewed already. She knew there was a huge debate on what actually classified as licorice and even how American candy was an abomination. All she wanted was the sugar that came from it, nothing else. And there was something satisfying about eating a Twizzler. The best were the kinds that could be peeled into smaller strands, but she’d eaten all of those already.

Finn stared at him as he seemed confused by her question. ”Yeah, you know, the druid beauty that you’re always attached to whenever she’s visiting?” How could he be so dismissive of that? Every time the High Druid walked into a room, all heads turned. It was almost freaky. Though to be fair, there were others in the Ministry that garnered that sort of attention, such as the Minister. Finn equated to the world figureheads having a different air to them. They definitely walked with authority that the rest of the lay people absolutely didn’t have.

”No-maj. Nothing too fancy, and it won’t try to kill you either,” Finn answered as the conversation went back to the Twizzlers. Sometimes a warning was needed, as she had learned after her first visit to Honeyduke’s. The shopkeeper seemed to think it was funny when she ate her first ever handful of Fizzing Whizbees. Levitating several inches off of the ground was not her definition of a fun time, unless she was doing it herself.

”Stayed home in New York for a little longer than usual. The home office wanted me to come in since its been a few years since my last time there, but I refused since I was on vacation,” she said nonchalantly. What were they going to do? Fire her? Finn had had a resignation letter written up ready to go out since the Hogwarts fire. All they had to do was disagree with her one more time and she was done again. She had absolutely zero interest in going back to the New York office currently, and her superiors knew that. Being well acquainted with how things worked with the Ministry also helped, and she was more hoping they’d hand her a liaison position here soon. ”Did I miss anything?”

”Licorice.” James repeated, eyebrow-raising in curiosity. Maybe new candy had been added to the shelves of Honeydukes. Who knew what the Fortescues had in mind as they added sweets to their ice cream empire? Not that James was complaining, of course. Like any wizard with a soul, he loved Fortescue’s ice cream. Slowly, his eyes left the candy carefully held between his fingers to his American friend. ”Oh, the High Druid?” James had been holding the thin candy in front of his face, elbows resting haphazardly on the piles of paperwork on his desk. Casually, he sat back, the chair creaking. ”I was due for rotation.” He shrugged.

”So it’s not a rope?” It was a thought, however. Already, he could picture Albus attempting to eat the candy, and it magically tied his fingers together or something ridiculous. Maybe it could morph into candy rope handcuffs of sorts? Mentally, he noted ideas to pass along to Lily and his uncle. Feeling brave, James took a bite, and it didn’t attempt to strangle him or anything of the sort. It, indeed, was muggle candy. Remembering his manners, he motioned to the random chair in front of his desk for Finn.

She explained her absence: going home to the States and remaining there for some time. It made sense. Her family was overseas. James couldn’t imagine not seeing his family for more than a fortnight at a time, let alone up to a year or so. Merlin, he remembered the look on his grandmother’s face when Teddy explained he would now travel for his work at the Museum. The devastation between her and Albus was enough for the whole family. ”Well, I’m sure your family was happy to see you.” He grinned encouragingly. Taking another large bite of the licorice, James tried to think through the gossip that had reached his ears but truthfully, he hadn’t been able to pay attention to much. ”We’ve been helping Interpol quite a bit, so lots of overtime—“ He sighed heavily. ”—and paperwork.”
