Elaine may have been sleepy but by no means did this mean that she was oblivious to what was going on around her. She heard the girl's smart ass comment as she had snickered to her little friend and the Slytherin girl rolled her eyes. "Typical Gryffindors..." she said shaking her head. It was too darn early in the morning for such frivolous and childish behavior. Seriously you thought that being near graduation would have matured these people. But of course what else was she to expect from half bloods and muggles--people who didn't belong in this world and yet here they were. Being bothers. Being pests. Being nuisances that needed to be put down. It was amazing that any of them made it through schooling really. They were always being fools and pranking around when they should be learning. Of course there was always the exception she supposed--their professor being said exception as he was head of the house and their teacher. But other then him and perhaps that no good goody two shoes father of James' -- she didn't see much in any Gryffindor--adult or otherwise.
She then saw Carcer walk in--the Hufflepuff held no importance to her. And as he gave coffee to the two Gryffindors--the girl was not offended whatsoever. The other was no pure blood and so she had no use of him. And it seemed as if he wanted nothing to do with her either. So the feelings were mutual. Then James walked in and she could not help the eye roll as he called the attention of the others onto him. He had quite a reputation for being an attention hog and a lady's man. Thankfully for them both--he had ignored her and had NOT tried to hit on her. A part of her wanted him too try--it would be just the excuse she could use to give him a curse or three. But he had the sense about him not to...
Then Aurora and Alice showed up. Alice was just another Hufflepuff who she had no care for and didn't even acknowledge and who didn't acknowledge her (which she was perfectly okay with). But she was intrigued by Aurora. She had read about her family--what they had done during the war. They were powerful foes against the forces that were against them. And it was just a shame that the Ravenclaw wasn't the same. Elaine highly doubted she could make an ally out of the other--she seemed to not care about blood (tsk tsk) and didn't mind interacting with such riff raff. Maybe one day she could make her see how wrong she was -- but alas now was not the time for that. Now was not the time for thinking too far ahead. She had to think about the here and the now.
Any further retorts aimed at the Gryffindor trio were stopped short as the teacher began class. The Patronus charm was what they were going to be doing today. She simply nodded as he explained what it was and how it was supposed to work. Of course she knew this. She already knew all of this from the class two years back. But it seemed as if he wanted to see if they remembered how. Of course she remembered how. She watched with eagerness as the teacher's patronus -- a tiger -- came flying out of his wand and began to run around the room. However it flat out ignored her. It wouldn't even go near her. She had to admit that was a surprise--the flash of such showing on her face as the tiger let out a roar before disappearing. Did it sense something? Was it obvious her thoughts? They couldn't read thoughts though! That was ridiculous...or was it?
She heard Eloide being a smart alec again and Elaine couldn't help but snort, "Or maybe you just smell too much." she retorted.
She shook the thoughts from her head as others began to conjure their patroni -- Ronan an eagle, Aurora a doe, Alice a raven and Carcer a HUGE boarhound. Whoa that was huge. And of course spinning around trying to catch its tail--what a dork...probably like its conjurer but she wasn't going to say that right now. She had to think happy thoughts and she knew exactly what her happy thought was (not that it was happy for anyone else but since when she did care). Of course her thoughts consisted of being powerful, of the wizarding world going back to the way it was supposed to--with only pure bloods. And her being at the top of the food chain. And it was with these thoughts in mind and a slight smirk on her face that she raised her wand up,
"Expecto Patronum." the silvery mist came out of her wand and into the shape of a wolf. The canine wandered around--growling a little as it raised up onto its hind legs to take a swipe at the birds in the air. Missing totally of course but then again -- it was a half hearted swipe as Elaine knew that she could not harm anyone right here and right now and so the wolf just had to be content with a passing swipe. The boar hound then pounced on top of Ronan and the wolf simply growled in an annoyed manner. The wolf simply paced around several moments before disappearing back into its silvery mist...
...and that was how it was done.

"Elle, dear," James said, looking at his Gryffindor friend. "My presence is always a treat," he joked, flashing a smirk and a wink her way.
James's attention was grabbed almost immediately by the dark haired Ravenclaw girl that had walked into the classroom. Aurora. That was her name. She was a Lestrange. Until recently, James had not noticed her. Even upon meeting her he could not put a name to the face. When he met her, something clicked in him. She made him nervous. No girl had ever done that to James Potter before. It was intimidating to him, that she didn't let any sort of amused or interrested expression show when she spoke to him. That was unusual to James. But he liked it.
Ronan then leaned up to whisper in his ear that his "girlfriend" had arrived. Almost instantly, James turned to face Ronan and give him a nasty look. "Shut it, Finnigan," he said through gritted teeth. Luckily, it looked like Aurora had not heard him, as Profressor Grey began the lesson then. They would be working with patroni today. James had produced a patronus only once, at the end of his sixth year. His was a lion, of course. He was eager to get up and show the class his fairly new skill. Instead, Ronan beat him first. His other Gryffindor friend proved his skill with his own eagle patronus. Then, Aurora went up there.
James watched her attentively as she conjured her doe patronus. For a second, he thought that he saw her blushing but brushed the thought away, thinking he was just imagining things. After Aurora, Carcer went up. He conjured a dog which then jumped up on Ronan and then it was Alice's turn. He smiled at her as she conjured her first patronus, a raven. The Slytherin, Elaine, had conjured a wolf. Impressive, but she was still a rotten snake. Then James finally took center stage.
He went up around the others and pulled out his wand. With a smirk, he said "Expecto patronum!" But instead, a meager mist exited the tip of his wand. This was especially embarrassing after the show his classmates had put on, and instead of trying again he stood in slight shock, staring at the tip of his wand.

one by one, each student got up and managed to perform beautiful patroni. ronan, who somehow knew how nervous she was about this particular task, whispered advice into her ear before casting the perfect spell, his silver eagle soaring around the room. she stared in wonder, then at the almost dancing doe, and gasped at carcer’s boar. she looked at alice, next to cast the spell, who she recalled, like elodie herself, had never managed to do it completely before. elodie was not surprised, however the slightest bit disappointed, that a raven burst out of her hufflepuff friend’s wand on command. of course she was happy for alice, this just meant that if elodie was unable to conjure it, she would possibly be the only one who failed. ”nice one, al!” she beamed at the hufflepuff. her eyes turned to elaine, whose wand produced the form of a perfect wolf. elodie frowned moodily. ”a wolf? i could have sworn her patronus was a flobberworm.” she muttered cattily to her friends, then folded her arms, as it was time for james potter to have a whirl. or… not? there was a moment of awkward silence as his wand fizzled a slight mist, but no patronus. elodie’s heart leapt – she felt for the guy. in an attempt to steal the attention away from his shock, she took out her wand. ”performance issues, james? i always told you, it’s not about the length of your wand, but how you use it.” she winked at him, hoping that he would be able to laugh his mistake off. but now it was all eyes on her. she took a deep breath, trying to summon up happiness. she thought about her parents - no giant feelings of glee came from that. she thought about getting her owls results and having passed with flying colours – a flutter in her chest came from that. it was working! finally, she thought about hanging with her mates in the gryffindor common room, and her friends from other houses, too. she was ready. ”okay, okay… expecto patronum!”” the sight of a silvery, translucent gazelle leaping out in front of her was enough of a shock to make her drop her wand, and with that, her patronus dispersed into the air. wide eyed, she looked around the room, a look of pure glee on her face, and then finally remembered to pick up her wand. she had finally done it! now, if only she hadn’t dropped her wand. well, we’ll take it one step at a time. tagged: DADA class! words: 425 outfit: ( link) notes: (n/a) |

Walton chuckled a bit at the banter flowing in between his students. As they all came forward to cast their patroni he was pleased at what he saw. Ronan, whom could do it since fifth year called for an eagle, then Aurora's a doe, Carcer's boarhound which made him laugh when it tackled Ronan, Alice's raven, the first time that she had cast a corporeal patronus, Elaine's was a wolf which he noted had tried to take a swipe at the raven and eagle, and then James' failed attempt. Which surprised him because the boy had been able to cast one last year. And then last but not least Elodie had cast her first ever corporeal patronus just like Alice, except she dropped her wand in excitement. "All of you, well done. However I would like for a couple of you to cast yours again, since it was your first time in doing so." He smiled at the two girls before he added. "Alice and Elodie I would like you to cast yours again." In his class and sometimes even out of class he used his students first names, some of the other professors didn't approve of this but that didn't matter to him.
He then turned towards James whom he noticed was standing there in shock at not having been able to cast the charm. Walton walked up to James and put a hand on his shoulder and guided him away from the others for a moment and snapped his fingers in front of James' face to get his attention. Lowering his voice to a mere whisper so no one else could hear what he had to say. "James I know you are shocked at not being able to cast the charm. I know it must be difficult for you to think of a happy moment, since the incident on the train. But here is what I want you to do. Try and think of the happiest thing that has ever happened to you. And then also about all of the positive feelings you have. Once you have done those two things I would like you to try casting the patronus charm once more. If you are up for that is. If not that is fine as well. But I would like you to try once more, cause I know you can do this, I saw it last year." With that Walton walked back up to the front of the room and leaned against the table as he waited for James to try again and for the two girls to cast their's again. He wanted them all to be able to cast a corporeal charm before they did the next thing that he had planned.

James was brought out of his daze by Elodie. He was grateful for the attempt to steal away the attention. It was embarrassing after all, especially after producing a fairly good patronus just last year. He gave Elodie a small smile and went along with the distraction. "I don't think I've ever heard that one before, actually," he winked at her. Elodie had always had his bag. They had always actually been flirting buddies, but it never got in the way of their great friendship.
James found a place behind the rest of the class, thankful to be out of the spotlight for once. He kept thinking over and over at what an embarrassing attempt that was by him. Then he looked up as his friend cast her patronus, a gazelle that leapt out in front of her and caused her to drop her wand in surprise. James couldn't help but grin at this, it was so like Elodie.
When the professor started talking again, James found himself hoping that he wouldn't saying thing to him. He just kind of stuffed his hands in his pockets and floated around behind his classmates for a moment... until Professor Walton called his name. He was still in shock and hadn't realized that the professor was snapping his fingers in his face. James blinked and looked up at him. Thankfully, the professor was kind enough to speak in a whisper. James really appreciated Professor Walton for his always encouraging words, but after that failed attempt, James wasn't so sure.
"If it's alright, Professor," he said, his voice softer than usual. "I think I'm going to go visit the Hospital Wing, I'm feeling a bit under the weater." Lie. James was feeling down, but not enough to exactly leave class. He made a feeble attempt at a smile for Professor Walton, hoping the professor would let him go. James really didn't think he could cast another patronus, especially right now.

elodie was not at all eager to do hers again, especially now that everyone’s attention would be on deciding whether or not her successful patronus was a fluke. however, she still was feeling good vibes from being able to actually do it, fluke or not, and she felt that she could use that feelings in conjuring that elusive silver gazelle. she turned to see james saying he was sick, and needed to go to the hospital wing, and her heart fell. she felt for him, she really did. though tempted to reach out and touch his shoulder, she resisted, not wanting anyone in the class like elaine to think of it as a sign of james’s weakness. slytherins tended to do that. of course, elodie didn’t think he was weak. it was just a bad day for him, and it’s not like she was on the high horse of patronus conjuring anyway. she held her wand out, trying to summon up the good emotions that she was feeling before, and stated the incantation, ”expecto patronum!” with a little less gusto than before. there was a fizzle of mist, nothing more. to be frank, elodie hadn’t expected anything big. she was distracted, thinking about james and wishing there was something she could do. she blushed, smiling apologetically at professor walton. ”hah. i think it was just a fluke, professor.” she said, trying to be positive, but she couldn’t hide her disappointment in her voice from a keen ear. tagged: DADA class! words: 247 outfit: ( link) notes: (n/a) |

Alice was still sort of coming down from the excitement of casting a patronus when James had finally gone up to cast his own. Alice danced on the balls of her feet a bit, excited to see her best friend perform his, but as James lifted up his wand and shoutedd the incantation, Alice's heart fell. The mist at the end of James' wand was obvious enough for the rest of the class to know that he had unsuccessfully cast a patronus. She could feel the silence in the air as everyone was probably feeling the same shock that was evident on James' face. Luckily, their friend Elodie jumped up to bat.
Alice then heard Elodie, sensing that she had made the pun and taken her turn to take the attention off of James. While she loved her friend for this, she still couldn't help but watch James with a sad look on her face. She felt horrible for him, as she knew the only cause of such a mistake had to do with the mishap on the train. When Alice heard Elodie cast her patronus however, she turned her attention to Elodie finally in time to watch the Gryffindor cast a gazelle patronus and drop her wand. A small smile appeared on the Hufflepuff's face as she watched her friend perform her first patronus as well.
When Professor Grey had congratulated the class, Alice found herself once again watching James with a worried expression once again. Professor Grey had instructed she and Elodie to cast theirs again, but Alice instead watched as he led James away from the rest of them momentarily. From the look on his face, Alice could tell James was making an excuse to leave. It was typical Potter, but this time Alice felt that she couldn't blame him.
Once again, Elodie stepped up to bat, but Alice could tell she wasn't as into it this time as a little fizzle of mist exited the tip of her wand. The past few minutes had really taken a toll on Alice's mood now. After Elodie spoke to the professor, Alice turned to him as well. "I don't think I could attempt it right now either, Professor," Alice said, her mood showing in her voice. "Considering..." she shrugged, trailing off. She figured she didn't have to say anymore.

He noticed that both Alice and Elodie couldn't cast theirs again, or didn't want to. Walton knew that they were friends with James, and they probably felt bad that he couldn't cast his. He smiled a little and walked over to James whom had asked him if he could go to the hospital wing. Walton saw right through the lie and said. "You may go. However I want you to come to my office after dinner tonight." He looked at the rest of the class before he handed him and a piece of chocolate, which he also handed to Alice and Elodie. He did this so that they would feel a little better, even though they might still feel a little bad. Turning back towards James he said in a whisper "Don't make me regret letting you leave class early. And to make sure you don't cause to much trouble or whatever your going to do my patronus will be going with and will stay with you until you come to my office tonight." With that said he cast his patronus without saying the spell. The tiger leaped out of his wand once more and turned towards him. Walton bent down a little so his mouth was next to the tiger's ear and in an even quieter whisper so no one could hear but the tiger "Watch over him until he comes to the office tonight, my friend, he will need you even if he thinks that he doesn't." He stood up again and then said to James "You may go." Before he headed back to the front of the class he said "Alice and Elodie, I expect you at my office tonight as well after dinner."
Once he got to the front of the class, not wanting to put his students on the spot anymore he said "Now we will be learning another spell. It is a spell that you won't find anywhere else, not even in books. It is a very useful spell, that forms a shield around you. It lasts longer that the protego spell and it is much stronger. The incantation is Clypeus fortium. Now I want all of you to try to cast it. It is rather difficult so do not be discouraged if you are unable to cast it the first few times that you try. I will show you how and then it is your turn." After giving the instruction he waived his wand in a complex motion that almost resembled a shield, and then he said "Clypeus fortium." A purple shield formed around him and then he flicked his wand to cancel it. He looked at his students wondering who would step up first.
(James, Alice and Elodie I will create a separate thread for the meeting in the office once the class is over.)

A flobberworm? Really? Was that all the comeback she had. Elaine just snorted. Weak. Very weak. She didn't say anything though as she was much more concerned with the lesson -- as they all should be. But alas they were not. Elaine was not surprised. She waited for the rest of the lesson and just hung back as all the chaos happened. James completely waffed his patronus and she had to mentally shake her head. It took a decent amount of control not to laugh out loud--but she did not want the attention to be drawn onto her. And so she kept quiet. He was still feeling the effects of finding that poor girl wasn't he? Emotional fool. He didn't get it did he? None of them did. Half of the people here didn't belong here. They had no right to be learning this--these spells. Alice and Eloide were just as worse -- they didn't get how important this was. They didn't want to perform the spell again and really it was just a waste of time. Elaine just had to roll her eyes. This was ridiculous. Downright ridiculous.
The professor seemed to get the idea though as he let James leave (not without a tiger watchdog however) and told Alice and Eloide to meet him later and finally it was time to move on. She didn't care much that the three of them were going to get into trouble—she wasn’t much to care in general. And it didn’t involve her at this point and so she wasn’t going to think too much about it. It was typical of James really. And as far as she was concerned--the other two deserved it too. She could not believe them. In any event -- she was glad that this debacle was over now and that they could learn something now.
She listened as the professor explained the better, faster stronger version of the Protego charm and how the books didn’t talk about it. It was hard he said and to not be discouraged if you could not get it right the first time. She watched as he performed the spell and a purple shield surrounded him. She smirked softly. Perfect. This spell would be absolutely bloody perfect for her! A way of protection against her enemies. She had to perfect this. There was no other way around it. This was just too perfect.
It seemed like it was their turn now and Elaine stepped up. ”I’ll give it a try.” she said simple as she took a moment to take a few deep breaths and to concentrate….clear her mind from the mess of a few moments ago. That meant nothing to her now. It was useless to think of those things. They would not help her in her quest or make her better. And after a silent moment she raised her wand, ”Clypeus fortium.” she said as the purple shield flickered around her…appearing for all of a couple seconds before disappearing. Her eyebrow furrowed a little as she wondered what she had to do. Hmmm…..
….this was going to take some practice….

Ronan was happy at the fact that two of his friends had been able to cast their first patronus. But then he saw James who wasn't able to cast one. He knew why. His friend was still having difficulty dealing with finding the murdered first year on the train. He watched as the Professor handled the situation. He had Alice and Elodie try again. But only Elodie tried. Ronan noticed the look in her eyes at the prospect of having to cast it again. And he was pretty sure that she wouldn't be able to do so, not after seeing James' failed attempt. He was right and only a wisp came out. Then he heard Alice say "I don't think I could attempt it right now either, Professor,". He quickly made a mental note to try and cheer his friends up later.
He then listened to the Professor, whom had let James go, but only with his patronus. It was quite interesting learning this spell that was better than the protego spell. He had heard about it from his dad just before coming to school this year, but he hadn't had the time to ask his dad to teach it to him. Then he watched the oh so mighty, Elaine Dupree, who thought she was better than everyone else, try to cast the spell. He suppressed a smirk when her spell only lasted a few seconds. Ronan already spotted what she had done wrong, but he wasn't about to tell her what it was. Everything came naturally to him when it came down to dueling, and casting charms or even transfiguring anything. He looked around at the others before he said to Elaine. "Well looks you need some practice." He might be pushing her buttons but he didn't really care right now. They avoided each other as much as possible only talking to each other in class if need be. Ronan then waved his wand, doing the exact movements that the Professor had done with his own wand. But he did them as quick as possible making sure that no one could tell see his wand before he said "Clypeus fortium." And he was rewarded as the purple shield formed around him. It lasted for about three to four minutes, before he cancelled it with a flick of his wand. He could have had it up for longer but he wanted to see if the others could do it and if not he would do what he could to help his friends learn the spell. Which included everyone except of course Elaine.

Carcer pulled his Patronus free from his Gryffindor friend as Alice conjured her own, in the form of a raven. Next up, Elaine conjured a wolf Patronus, to which Carcer raised an eyebrow. Elaine didn’t seem like the pack leader and protector type to him. Though she definitely felt like a predator. He grinned as the wolf growled at the other Patronuses, which his boarhound responded to with a look of disdain. Then the massive dog turned to Carcer, yipped once, and vanished. He turned to Elaine. “I never see you smiling, so it’s good to know you have happy memories. I thought I might have to give you a hug for you to summon up a Patronus!” Of course, Elaine, who had the reputation of a typical Slytherin, would not want a hug from Carcer, who was probably as low on her list as it was possible to be. Not that that would stop him from giving her a hug at different times. One of these days he expected her to just try to kill him outright when he went for a hug. But that was okay, because she needed the hugs. Of all people to fail to cast the Patronus Charm, James Potter would have been the last one he expected. Carcer rarely saw the guy not smiling and having a generally great life. Then again, James had been the one to find the corpse on the train. Plus, he supposed enjoyment was not the same as actual happiness. Carcer enjoyed his life, but there wasn’t really a single memory that was strong enough to conjure a Patronus on its own for him. Idly, he wondered what memory had failed James. Then he wondered what memory had succeeded for Alice. Didn’t seem like it would work again though—Elodie and Alice both said they didn’t think they could recast the Patronus Charm after James left. He smiled down at the pair of girls. “Hey, if there’s anything you guys need, or…I mean, if I can help, let me know, eh?” Carcer was, as stated, not overly fond of James, but that was hardly an excuse not to give him a hand if he needed it. But before he could say much else, Professor Grey stepped in, and Carcer quieted down to watch the new spell being cast. Eyes traced the motions of the professor's wand, ears memorized the incantation, a sense for magic reached out to examine the weave of the shield spell. Carcer was fairly certain he understood what was needed. The shield indeed seemed to have a tigher, tougher magical weave than the normal Shield Charm, but unless he was mistaken, its longevity was due to drawing on the magical power of its caster. If such was the case, the shield's downfall was that it wouldn't hold up more than an instant if used at range or to protect others. Unless there was another layer to the weave he was missing? Possible, but...an Auror would need spells to protect themselves before others, so it only made sense like that.
Elaine was only able to cast the spell for a moment before it flickered away, to which Ronan immediately took a snipe at her. Carcer only smiled at the Slytherin girl though. “Sure you don't need that hug, Dupree?” There was something to be said for how much more irritating you could be by staying calm and friendly as opposed to confrontational and angry. Still, he followed Ronan's example, raising his wand. “Clypeus fortium.” The shield flared to life around him, but after a moment, it began to fade. Carcer blinked. What? He shored the spell back up, but it only lasted another moment before—wait a minute. He raised his hand and placed it against the shield, which sparked violently and sputtered out. “Right, giant's blood. Professor, my magical resistance seems to be interfering with the spell sustaining itself.” Giants were not as physically powerful as dragons, but they were among the most magically-resistant beings in the world. Carcer's dad had once taken enough simultaneously Stunners to bring a dragon down and they merely bounced off his skin. Normally, the resistance didn't affect his own magic, which was a part of his own will, but if the spell was long-lasting and independent, he could see how it might lose power over time, unable to sustain itself as his will seeped out, along with its access to his magic.

Bright blue eyes that belong to Aurora were constantly on James through the class. She, of course, looked over at whoever was performing a spell or at the professor when he spoke, but after the just of it, Aurora’s eyes just went back to Potter. Way to break the boundaries Potter. Were her thoughts. She just couldn’t ignore him like before. Especially when it was his turn. She couldn’t remember what his patronus looked like. But before this year, before their meeting in the library, she didn’t really care to remember. The girl stood there, her eyes completely on him up until the moment where… he failed. Even Aurora held a moment of confusion before her thoughts went back to what happened on the train. James was the one who found her. It made sense and proved James was just as human as the rest of the lot.
And even though she knew it logically and understood it. Aurora ended up empathizing for Potter. A piece of her felt concerned and wanted to do something about it. Maybe the part of her that craved to be a healer and shut her heritage down. Aurora stood still until James asked to leave. She didn’t even know she was holding her breath. Aurora subconsciously took a step closer to Ronan before giving him a look. It seemed she wasn’t the only one affected by the scene, his friends seemed stunned too. Only different between them and herself, Aurora was more than positive she could do the spell again. She already knew she could.
And even thought this happened, the professor directed the class back on track. Aurora’s attention went straight on him. A new spell. Not found in a book. A wide grin appeared on her face. That was more like it. He promised her this and evidently he was providing. The girl watched the spell happen. Her eyes watched while her brain began to turn, taking in every detail and trying to understand the mechanism of it. She watched a couple of students try. Carcer was the most interesting. “You’re astonishing.” She commented to the giant without giving her observation a second thought, “What a gorgeous reaction.” The girl was back onto being a student and completely educational. She guessed it would be her turn. She lifted her arm up. Her mind clicked in and her instincts took place. Her movement mimic what the Professor showed them until the final moment where she said clearly “Clypeus fortium”. A spell was nothing if not without its practice of moment as well as its words. A purple shield went up and then flickered out. The realization that she did it cancelled it out. But she didn’t feel confused. Her eyes were brightly lit up at the opportunity to use her wand.

elodie was glad that her lack of patronus the second time round didn’t gather much negative attention, no whispers of i knew she couldn’t do it or hostile giggles. though the professor did mention he’d want to see her later on, which caused a burst of nerves in her chest. this, however, didn’t last long as it was time to try a new spell, which she was very thankful for. joining the others, she pointed her wand determinedly, and did her usual mantra before performing a spell for the first time. she thought about how much she knew about the spell – which was not a substantial amount. she had read the dark arts textbook through before the term had even started, and there was no mention of this spell. the professor was not going by the books, and it was obvious to a keen mind why. there were other things that the students needed to be protected from other than failing newts. however, she thought very deeply about the professor’s description of the spell, and what the other classmates’ spells looked like. then… ” clypeus fortium.” a translucent purple shield was cast in front of her, shimmering slightly. she looked at it, examining it from different angles while not moving her wand arm, trying to get a better grasp on the spell so that she could attain the same results next time, too. after a solid minute, the shield wavered and disappeared. elodie looked modestly at her feet, proud of her first attempt but unwilling to show the others the confidence gained from trying. she practiced again in her own space, until she had an almost solid looking shield in front of her. she grinned and looked towards professor grey for further instructions or critiques, knowing that it probably wasn’t perfect, but something to be happy with nonetheless. tagged: DADA class! words: 308 outfit: ( link) notes: (n/a) |

The girl could not help but roll her eyes as she heard Carcer speak. Hugs? I don't think so. The half giant often tried to give her hugs but she normally used her much small size (she was five feet 8 inches which was tall for a girl her age but no where near the other's height) to get away or generally she just took it and grumbled about it inside of her head and was glad when he went away. One of these days--one of these days she was going to let him have it. She was not a hugger...never had been--not even with her own parents and family did she really hug! Let alone some half giant hufflepuff student. She gave him a look as she spoke,
"Very funny." she said dryly with sarcasm dripping off of her tone in spades--he didn't think she had happy memories did he? Oh what a sad, sad mistake that was. "I do happen to have plenty of happy memories." she said simply though none she would share and none that anyone would care to know about probably. She just gave him a pretty little smile before the next part of the class began...
Elaine was non successful --- it was a mild blow but nothing she could not overcome. This was only a mild set back. This just meant that she would have to practice this when she got back to the common room. It was as simple as that. She would get this spell. There was no not getting this. She had already set her mind on practicing this every break she had until she had this. She would not be known as a failure. She would do this! She was determined to get this. And that determination grew even more as Ronan took a jab at her unsuccessful bid at performing the complicated shield spell before performing it much better than she did and more effortlessly. "I suppose I do." she said toward the Gryffindor boy with a fake smile though inside she was burning up with jealousy and envy. He was doing something she couldn't. A spell she could not perform right now. And with ease!
She heard Carcer asking her if she needed that hug of his and she shook her head in a very defiant no...that with the look of ‘don’t come near me’ that she gave him should have sent the message loud and clear. No hugs. Don’t come near me. Not unless you wanted to get hurt.
Period. End of story.
Ugh this was unacceptable! How dare he show her up? It only heightened her resolve to get better, to best them...best them all. She thought this as she watched Carcer, Aurora and Elodie perform the spells--each with differing results. She wasn't as attentive to them as she was still mentally fuming over Ronan. She didn't let herself be bested by ANYONE let alone Gryffindors....oh she was not happy right now. Not happy whatsoever. But she bit her tongue. She did not say anything in response cause why would she let him know that he angered her? Why would she give him that satisfaction? Spoiler alert--she wasn't. She wasn't going to do any of that. And so she would keep her thoughts to herself as she waited for the professor to tell them all what they did wrong or what they did right....

Walton stood back watching as his students began to attempt to cast the spell that he had just shown them and there were mixed results. Which didn’t surprise him one bit. First to step up and try the new spell was Elaine. Who didn’t screw up in anyway, but it was probably going to take her a while to cast the charm and get it to work for her. “Nice try Elaine, but I ask you to keep practicing the spell, and hopefully you will have it down by next class. Since we will be reviewing it.“ He said/instructed. “Oh and you might want to work on the wand movement a bit as well before trying the spell, for the slightest variation and you will be given the same results as you did just now.”
He then turned to look at Ronan as the boy spoke to Elaine telling her that she would need some practice. It was true but now the question was would Ronan be successful. He wasn’t disappointed as one of his best students did the wand movements quickly, but they were accurate and devoid of any variation, or mistake. A purple shield formed around the boy as it was supposed to if cast correctly. It had even lasted for several minutes, before Ronan ended it. “Very well done Ronan.” He complimented before turning towards Carcer who wanted to go next. As he did so he thought ‘Hmm. I will have to keep an eye on him, could do well in the IA.’ It was still early in the school year to be thinking about which students he would need to keep an eye to see if they were potential recruits.
Walton watched Carcer’s spell appear and fade before the boy touched the shield with his hand, and then it sparkled and sputtered out. “Right, giant's blood. Professor, my magical resistance seems to be interfering with the spell sustaining itself.” He grinned as Carcer figured out why it didn’t quite work for him. Walton had already thought about this beforehand, but there was a version of the spell that would work for anyone with giant’s blood. He walked over to Carcer before dropping his voice into a low whisper so others wouldn’t hear except for the boy. “I thought that might happen. Now there is a variation of the spell that was made specifically for anyone who has giant’s blood in them. The wand movements are the same, and the shield will appear in a deep violet color. The incantation is Fortitudinis clipeum. Now go ahead and try that and it should work for you just fine. And also as they say practice makes perfect.” He walked away back to stand in the front to watch the next student to try.
“Good try Aurora. Now to get the shield to stay up longer, you need to move your wand in this certain direction without deviation this time.” He said as he instructed her on where she had messed up with the wand movement. It really was just a simple mistake that was easy to fix, especially for the Ravenclaw. Next up was Elodie who did well the first time casting the spell and then continued to practice in her own space. It showed determination, and when she grinned at him, He smiled and said “Good job. Now as you cast the spell, try moving your wand with a fluid motion and do not pause even for a second.”
“Alright everyone you have done a great job today and I want you to continue to practice both the patronus charm and also the shield spell before our next class period.” He paused looking at his students for a second, before he said “Oh and those that I have told to come to my office tonight I will be sending you an message of the time you need to be there, and there might be a few of you who I will also be sending a message to. So be on the lookout for the message. You may all go since we are done for today. Do not forget to practice, for I will know if you have practiced or not. Have a good day.” And with that Walton went and sat back down in the chair and table that were at the front of the room. He had seen something in a few students that showed that they cared for and trusted one another. Mainly the Gryffindors, and Hufflepuffs. They were good for each other and he was glad he had the opportunity to teach them. Walton was also pleased with the work that Auror had done today. But the one thing that concerned him the most was Elaine, something was definitely different about her and he didn’t know what it was.
(Class is done. Next class will be up in about two weeks. And i will send owls to those that I want to have meet walton & then I will start a thread where this all takes place.)
