overall personality:
royal knew from the beginning that he wanted to grow up to be someone. as much as he loved his father, he didn’t want to spend his entire life being kingsley shacklebolt’s son. his need to prove himself grew stronger as he got older, though his father’s death has tempered it slightly. in his searching for his path in life, royal has done a few things he isn’t proud of. he steps on people’s backs sometimes as a way to get higher up, and while he regrets that he pushed others down, he can’t find it in himself to regret the gain that came from that.
a politician father also affected royal’s way of speech. equivocating is his strongest suit, with placating following close behind. royal knows how to work a crowd, and how to state an opinion without ruffling feathers. words are his best friends, and he knows how to use them. as far as other friends go, though, his tendency to be acerbic and his relative fame have made royal more solitary than he prefers. his newfound passion in writing the story of his father’s life has made royal even busier and less able to reach out to others.
social woes aside, royal is a quick as a whip. upon first meeting him, some assume that he was sorted into ravenclaw due to his intelligence and tendency towards a know-it-all attitude. despite his obvious flaws, royal’s one redeeming quality is that he is determined to continue his father’s legacy of equality. those who think that muggleborns and muggles are any less than fullblooded wizards will soon find themselves on the receiving end of a nasty hex, or perhaps a well-placed punch. no one, after all, would punish the former minister of magic’s grieving son, would they?

history:
royal grew up in the spotlight. his birth was announced in the daily prophet, and he was paraded around for everyone to see. he was the firstborn son of the minister of magic, proof that life after the war could exist. growing up with everyone watching him was something that royal quickly became accustomed to, but it did set his course in life. everyone was watching him, so he gave them a damn good show.
by the time his sisters were born, royal had developed an unusually strong bond with his father. kingsley wasn’t home often (an unfortunate setback of being one of the most powerful men in wizarding britain), but when he was, the pair were always together. kingsley would sit royal on his knee and tell him stories about anything that he asked about. he listened to stories of hope and hopelessness, chivalry and courage, victory and defeat, all while nestled safely in the crook of his father’s arm. more often than not, royal would fall asleep in kingsley’s arms with his nose pressed into his father’s skin, where the scent of his irish spring soap still lingered.
his sisters being born changed everything. having monopolized his father’s limited time for five years, royal was confused when he suddenly had to share it with not one, but two new siblings. his sisters were cute enough, but at such a young age, after being the golden boy for so long, the transition to relative anonymity was jarring. as they all grew older, the feeling of inadequacy lessened and royal reaffirmed his strong bond with his father.
growing up, however, brought new challenges. his sisters were much younger than royal, and finding ways to relate to them was difficult, especially considering that they had each other to confide in and play with and do every other sibling-related thing with. royal found himself more of a protector for his sisters than a friend; he kissed scrapes and threatened to beat up bullies and yelled when something was unfair. it was the only thing that he could do.
going to hogwarts was a relief for royal. being sorted into slytherin was a different matter. there was a frantic owl to his father, who responded with expediency that was shocking to a child who was used to being told that he had to wait because daddy was doing something else. being the most important thing in his father’s life, even if it was for something so upsetting, was a nice feeling.
after reaching the realization that not all of his housemates (in fact, precious few of them) were death eaters in training, his experience at school was a positive one. it didn’t take long for royal to realize that he had been sorted into the correct house; he was challenged in every way by his friends, and the ambition that had been present since he was a child blossomed into great aspirations. by the time he left hogwarts, royal was sure that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become the minister of magic. he took a job at the daily prophet as a way to establish his own career independent of his father and the ministry, and flourished under the pressures of a daily deadline and constant research.
his father’s death took a part of royal that he may never reclaim. his first friend, his storyteller and secret-keeper, his light in the dark and rock in the storm, was dead. the next day was an ache of black and too many people and this can’t be happening. his father’s funeral – the words were strange in his brain, on his tongue – was widely attended, yet royal could find no one who felt the same agony as he did. unable to cry for a man he could not believe was dead, royal found himself with a sadness he couldn’t rid himself of and a thousand unanswered questions.
his work helped keep royal sane. he didn’t drown himself in it, as he was tempted to, but instead began a side project. in an attempt to become closer with his father, and show the world the version of kingsley shacklebolt that very few people knew, royal began to pen a biography detailing his father’s life, from humble beginning to tragic end. safe in his sanctuary of words, royal is beginning to heal.
