overall personality:
born to one of the greatest jokesters in hogwarts history (and distantly related to two others), fred is more than happy to live up to his family’s legacy of making people happy. he’s constantly looking for new ways to make people happy, sometimes at his own expense, but more often at the expense of others. it’s fair to say that fred can be a little vicious in his pranking, and doesn’t always know when he’s crossed the line into meanness for the sake of humor. in that way he can be blind to other people’s emotions, though he generally does try to be nice to the people who deserve it. reading people is a skill that fred is trying desperately to learn, but failing spectacularly at. he often confuses what he wants someone to be feeling with what they’re actually feeling.
with that information, it’s not hard to believe that fred is more than a little self-centered. he grew up with more cousins than he knew what to do with, and since his aunts and uncles were constantly chasing the little ones around, fred grew to be independent. with this independence, though, came the idea that someone had to look after him. in the absence of anyone else stepping up to the plate, fred decided that he was going to have to be the one to take care of himself, and thus evolved the self-centric mentality.
fred tries his best to exemplify what the perfect gryffindor should be. he attempts to stand up for the weak and downtrodden, especially if it means defending one of his younger cousins. fred hates the idea that people with some blood are inherently better than others, but he also hates the idea that every slytherin was a pureblood supremacist. stereotyping is still stereotyping, no matter who does it, and fred hopes that when he graduates hogwarts he can help petition for equality among all wizards – even slytherins.

history:
all stories start with once upon a time, but not all end with a happy ever after. fred weasley started, once upon a time, as a ginger kid with a twin brother and a zest for adventure. when he didn’t get a happy ever after, his twin brother tried to rewrite the story. another fred weasley, this one with dark hair, but still the same love of adventure, was allowed to begin his story. summer started, and so did a new life, and a new story. it was, for all intents and purposes, the perfect story. fred was the firstborn child of two doting parents, and had more aunts and uncles than any one child needed. it was a good life, a charmed life.
fred was eleven years old when he learned that he was named for a hero of the second wizarding war. the burden of someone else’s legacy sat heavily between the blades of his shoulders. he couldn’t just be himself anymore; he had to be the first fred weasley, too. at the time he didn’t realize it, but the day he learned about his uncle’s fate was also the day he found his worst fear. is fate inescapable? for the young fred weasley, it didn’t seem to be. if someone had died young, then their story was over. there was no sense in trying again. it just doomed another person to a terrible fate and the knowledge that they would not get a happily ever after.
despite the fear that consumed many of his waking hours, fred grew into the spitting image of his father, not necessarily in looks, but in personality. he was loud and gregarious. he found a best friend and people who thought he was funny, and thrived under their attention. while fred didn’t try his hardest in his classes, he did pay attention enough that he could have a career when he grew older. he decided in his third year that he didn’t want to have a “normal” job when he grew up. he wanted to do what his dad did – make people laugh for a living, through the family joke shop. they needed an heir to the empire, and fred was more than happy to step up to the plate.
his fourth through sixth years saw the arrival of more weasleys to the school, and fred did have to say he was surprised when his younger cousins were sorted into houses other than gryffindor. all of the weasley children had been gryffindor, so it seemed a little strange that their children showed such variety. fred didn’t care much, though; he wanted his cousins as they were, not as their family wanted them to be. that was the beginning of fred’s real push for house equality, especially because his housemates tended to be the most judgmental of all.
seventh year reignited a fear that had been lying dormant in fred since he had learned of his uncle. a muggleborn was found dead, and that seemed to be an omen of war. fred did his best to ignore everything that was happening. if he didn’t get caught up in the war, then he couldn’t die in it. when people asked him about it, fred said that he thought the war was awful. he was content to be a coward, just this once. he didn’t want history to repeat itself, and if cowardice was the only way to escape that…well, it was the only way, and fred couldn’t fault himself for that, could he?
