asa’s been a pacifist for almost as long as they’ve been alive; the idea of willingly doing harm to someone, even if it’s for the “right reason” is abhorrent to them. they’re of the philosophy that eventually any reason can begin to look like the right reason given enough time or word mincing. asa would prefer to know that they’re not getting into a fight that they’re going to regret later as new information comes to light. if they really must fight over something (and their definition of must is a lot stricter than most), asa likes to use their fists instead of their words; bruises and cuts heal a lot faster than egos and feelings.
asa’s fear of confrontation, as well as their fear of being ostracized for who they are, has led them to be a rather quiet individual. they’d prefer not talk to people they don’t know, though they find themself being the kind of person who ends up getting roped into talking anyways. asa approaches conversation as a game in which the objective is to give away as little information as possible, and they’re great at getting people to believe they’ve said something meaningful when it’s nothing special at all. quiet is asa’s haven from the cruelty of a world who doesn’t understand people like them, and they prefer that it stay that way.
despite their dislike for talking and disagreement both, when asa is enamored by a cause, it has their full attention. they work with a quiet intensity that reveals just how gryffindor they tend to be, and because they choose to work for something so infrequently, it’s special when asa really tries to change something. getting asa to agree to work on something is quite a feat, and it took them a long while to decide on a career in hogwarts because they were worried about choosing one thing to fight for (every career, is, after all, a fight for something) for the rest of their life. devoting themself to a task is something that’s scary for asa, but then again, most of life is, too.

history:
once upon a time, there was a man that was a hero of not one, but two different worlds. his name was outrageously long, but most people knew him simply by lafayette. asa’s mother was obsessed with the man, much to their father’s chagrin. when it just so happened that asa’s birthday fell on the same day almost three hundred years later, their mother took it as a sign, and thus the child gained the middle name of lafayette. it would have been their first name, but it was at that point that dennis creevey put his foot down. some would argue that asa is no better of a name for a girl, but it suited the baby as well as any other name could have.
life went on. a little sister entered the picture, and things were fine. it was never particularly good, never particularly bad. throughout their adolescent years, asa kept feeling like something was wrong. it was a feeling akin to putting something down, going back to pick it up, and finding it shifted just a few inches to the side – not particularly big, but not unnoticeable, either. asa shrugged it off and continued on. life for asa consisted mostly of appeasing lavinia’s constant desire to be with asa. it wasn’t that they minded so much as that they didn’t know how to deal with the constant attention; asa’s introverted tendencies developed early on in life, obviously, but they loved and doted upon their little sister nonetheless.
going to hogwarts was scary for asa, though they couldn’t pinpoint exactly one reason why. asa was required to go nonetheless. they were one of the oldest in their year, since they had been born only five days after the cutoff date. asa didn’t know which house they expected to be placed into; their quiet nature and devotion to a task seemed to point to hufflepuff. asa’s discussion with the sorting hat was interesting to say the least, and it left her with a cryptic message before announcing her to be a gryffindor. you may not know it now, but soon you will need to be very brave. asa didn’t know that the sorting hat was capable of precognition, but it must’ve seen something in her subconscious, because asa soon found out what the hat meant.
spending all of their time around other girls – in the dormitory, in classes, at lunch – made asa realize that they weren’t one. they tried to be as feminine as possible, but it was the same wrong feeling that had been nipping at her heels for nearly her whole life. it took a lot of research to find what that meant for asa, but by the end of their first year, they were certain of one thing: they were agender. they weren’t sure how to approach the subject with their parents, so asa returned home to awkward silence. going back to hogwarts in the fall was a relief like no other.
having the space to think gave asa the courage they needed to begin coming out. they wrote a veritable novel to their parents and an equally long diatribe to their sister to try to explain what was happening to them, and how they hoped that their family would understand. luckily their family was all supportive of their decision. trying to come out to friends at school was more difficult for asa, mostly because there were only so many ways to explain that, though they walked like a girl and talked like a girl and even looked like a girl, they weren’t a girl. they only came out to close friends, but beyond that remained characteristically silent. still, it was the bravest thing asa had ever done.
that was, of course, until bad things began to happen in school. students were killed and kidnapped, and asa didn’t know what to do. they had long since developed their strategy of staying out of conflict whenever possible, and choosing a side would throw them right into the middle of one. it was one of the few things that asa agreed was genuinely worth fighting for. they joined phoenix rising, though not without a second thought. the worst thing about the battle, though, was not that it was difficult – asa knew what it was like to fight uphill. the worst thing was watching it take its toll on the people they loved; their father, whose brother had died in the second war, and their sister, who had lost a housemate and a friend. asa wasn’t talkative to start with, but with their loved ones in the line of fire, they’re practically silent. watching the world fall down around you is never fun, and asa is beginning to worry about their happily ever after.
