overall personality:
imogen likes people – she really does. the problem is that she’s under the impression that people don’t like her in return, and she constantly fears that people won’t accept her for who she’s always been. caution in meeting new people is more than just a personality quirk; it’s a survival mechanism. imogen wishes she lived in a world where it was possible to live her life without fear of what people would do and say to her, but it’s not, so she doesn’t waste her breath in praying or hoping. she doesn’t know whether to call it self-preservation or self-pity, but it’s safe to say that imogen is less than warm in meeting new people. once people prove themselves worthy, though, she tends to attach herself to them.
one of her more positive personality traits is imogen’s steadiness. she has weather many storms, and therefore finds it easier to help when other people need a shoulder to lean on. even when people don’t realize they need help, imogen will help them, in her own quiet, persistent fashion. imogen’s also quite good at removing herself from situations with high emotions. this level of emotional disconnect helps her help others much more effectively since she’s not bogged down by her own feelings, but sometimes removes empathy from the equation. it’s a balancing act for her, one she’s still trying to perfect.

taylor zhu, 56, retired nurse
father:
ignatius zhu, 57, ministry worker
siblings:
julia zhu, 17, student
pets:
erebor, an eagle owl
history:
imogen was born ignatius, not that she’d ever tell anyone that. the first years of her life were spent in relative discomfort, though her family was well off and she wasn’t a particularly unhappy kid; she just kept to herself more than was probably healthy, but her parents let her be, especially since when her younger sister came around, imogen (then ignatius) took to the girl immediately. imogen's ability as a metamorphmagus was a constant shock for her mother, who never grew used to her child's hair changing colors every time she left the room, and that distance from her mother did nothing to help imogen's sense of unbelonging.
the journey to hogwarts was an interesting one, to say the least. imogen didn’t know what to expect, since her father had gone to beauxbatons, and not hogwarts. she was placed in the hufflepuff house, though she quickly found friends in the other houses. the fact that she entertained people with her metamorphmagus ability was an easy conversation starter. most notably, her best friend was a gryffindor boy named henry who scared imogen with how loud he talked but also intrigued her with how much he had to say. the friendship was beautiful in ways that imogen had never expected, but the discomfort she felt with her life never really left her. eventually imogen had to admit that there was still something missing despite her newfound friendships.
it took her until her fifth year in school for imogen to realize that she wasn’t the boy she was born as. naturally, the first person she told was henry – that seemed like the kind of thing that best friends ought to know. despite the fact that imogen had stressed the importance of keeping the information secret until she was ready to come out to the school, by dinner that evening everyone knew that imogen was different. there was no overt display of dissent, but there were whispers in the hallways when she passed by, and people looked at her differently. she had been shoved out of the closet too quickly, and she was paying the price for henry’s arrogance and inability to keep his mouth shut. thus began imogen’s hatred of gryffindors – they were all gossip mongerers who couldn’t be trusted with anything important. the fact that henry refused to apologize for the pain he caused her did nothing to ameliorate imogen’s opinion of the lions.
the next two years at hogwarts were hell. the whispers faded, but the looks never stopped. imogen was horribly alone, and she threw herself into her studies to make up for all the friendships she lacked. the only good thing that came out of that aching loneliness was imogen’s passion for charms, a subject that she had otherwise ignored, dismissing it as nothing more than a necessity for most magical careers. by the end of school, imogen knew that she wanted to do something that involved the subject. teaching didn’t come into the forefront of her mind until she took her first job. everyone in her workplace knew her as imogen, and without the discomfort of feeling like she was constantly being watched and judged, imogen bloomed. she kept her jaded natured, of course, but managed to open to a few more people than before. they thought she had a flair for teaching, and imogen decided that shaping young minds to be tolerant and fair wasn’t a bad idea.
as luck would have it, a spot opened up at the school. imogen had heard of the tragedies that occurred there the previous school year – the murdered children, the kidnapping – and it scared her, but also strengthened her resolve. even when king’s cross was attacked, imogen knew that her duty was to hogwarts, and to building a more tolerant and hopeful future.
