“Mom?”
“Yes, love?”
“I just wanted to see if you had the time to talk about something.”
"Can it wait, dear? I'm in the middle of -”
“It's kind of important, mom.”
“Alright, Jay. I guess this can wait until morning.”
“You remember that letter I sent you, about meeting all of my half-siblings?”
“How could I forget, Jamie? It was practically a novel. That poor owl was near death when it got here.”
“Well...my sister told me something. And I asked the school counselor about it -”
“Jamie, why'd you go to see the counselor? Is everything okay?”
“That's kind of what I'm trying to talk to you about, mother.”
“Sorry, love. Continue.”
“Odette - my sister, the older one - she said that it's impossible to be born a werewolf. And you told me that I was born one.”
“Well, I'm sure that she was mistaken, Jay.”
“Would you let me finish? She told me that it's impossible to be born a werewolf, and the school counselor agreed, and they're both witches. You're a Muggle. They’d know better than you, wouldn’t they? What aren't you telling me?”
“Jamie…”
“Don't ‘Jamie’ me, just answer the question!”
“You’re not going to like the answer.”
“So it’s not what you told me before.”
“I – no, Jamie, it’s not what I told you before.”
“I wasn’t born a werewolf.”
“No, Jay, you weren’t born a werewolf.”
“So then how did it happen? Who bit me? Why did they bite me, if I was just some Muggle kid?”
“Your father…Fenrir, well, he liked me.”
“If you’re about to tell me that he’s capable of love, I’m leaving.”
“Stop being so melodramatic, Jamie. No, he didn’t love me. But he enjoyed our time together.”
“Still your daughter; please skip past the sex part, thanks.”
“Fine. Fenrir wanted to find me again. And I guess he’s more powerful than I thought, because he did find me. He came to the hotel once, and asked me how I’d been. And I said I was fine, because I was. And then he asked me if I wanted to be with him again. And I told him I didn’t, because that was the truth.”
“You said no to him.”
“Yes, I said no to him.”
“That was stupid.”
“Thanks, Jamie. I really appreciate your attitude right now. Do you want to hear the rest of the story or not?”
“I don’t think I like where it’s going…But yes, continue.”
“Fenrir wasn’t pleased that I said no, as you seem to have guessed. He wanted to turn me into a werewolf. And I…didn’t want that. Jay, you have to understand, I was young. I was scared. I’m not a witch, I don’t belong in your world. That doesn’t make my choice any more justified, but I need you to understand, Jamie, that it wasn’t because I didn’t love you. I did. I still do. You’re my baby.”
“How can you pretend that you still love me when you let him turn me into a monster!?”
“You’re not a monster, Jamie -”
“You’ve never seen me as a wolf, mother. I almost killed one of the kids at my school because he was out wandering the grounds and my potion had been tampered with! I am seventeen years old, and I was almost a murderer because I am a wolf! Don’t tell me I’m not a monster!”
“I didn’t tell him to turn you. I just…I told him that you liked playing in the backyard. Do you remember that? When you were little, you loved to go out and play at night, said that you liked the way the stars looked…”
“You didn’t tell him to turn me, you just told him where he could find me, and just so happened to insinuate that I’d be out when the moon was up! Thanks, mom, I feel so much better now! You’re totally right, this definitely wasn’t your fault!”
“Jamie, you have to understand, this was hard for me, too -”
“Not everything is about you, mom!”
“Well, sweet cheeks, not everything is about you, either! Like you said, you’re seventeen. Maybe it’s time to grow up and get over it!”
“Oh, yes, because my mother sacrificing me to my demon father is something I can just ‘get over’ because adults ‘get over’ shit like that all the time! You literally told me this three minutes ago!”
“Jamie Marianas Greyback, watch your language!”
“I’ll say whatever the hell I want to say, mother! Are you even my real mother, or did you lie to me about that, too?”
“Jamie!”
“Well, how am I supposed to know? You wouldn’t tell me that I was turned into a werewolf because it made you look bad. Maybe I’m actually some crack addict’s kid and that’s why I’m so messed up! Maybe that’s why you never really loved me!”
“Jamie, I did love you! You have to believe that.”
“Mothers who love their daughters don’t let their daughters get bitten by psychopath werewolves just because they’re cowards!”
“This conversation isn’t getting us anywhere, Jamie. Go to your room and take a break. Try to cool off.”
“This isn’t something that I can just ‘cool off’ from! You’ve single-handedly destroyed every truth I’ve ever known. I hope you feel good about that, mother! I hope that giving me to Fenrir was worth it! You got to keep your stupid normal life, but you can't have that and have me, too.”
“Jamie, please. You have to try to understand.”
“I don’t want to understand you if you think that doing something like that is okay!”
“It wasn’t okay, but it’s not like I can change it now!”
“Well, it’s not my fault you made the wrong the decision the first time! I…I…I hate you!”
“Jamie, you don’t hate anyone.”
“I didn’t hate anyone, but there’s a first time for everything!”
“Jamie – don’t you dare slam that door, young lady!”
“I do what I want!”
“You’re acting like a toddler, Jamie!”
“…”
“Jamie?”
“…”
“Jamie?”
