Jamie couldn't help it. She had been in Diagon Alley for the past two days, and both days had helped a little old lady cross the street. Jamie had no business in the alley anymore, but she wanted desperately to make sure that Regina could get across the street safely. The poor woman wouldn't be able to make it with Jamie! The longer she sat on the curb, waiting for Regina to appear, the more certain Jamie became that Regina was not going to appear. Jamie didn't want to think of the reasons why that might be - what if she had tried to cross the street alone and gotten hit by a car? The Hufflepuff was working herself up into a froth of worry over Regina, and sitting in the same place was not helping any.
The Hufflepuff did what she always did when she was stressed: she walked to Quality Quidditch Supplies. Even looking at the display through the window was enough to calm Jamie down. She wiped hot, angry tears she hadn't even noticed she was crying off her cheeks and stared at the brooms in the window.

@jamie a new broom for school. something told him that his father was buying him the broom in order to make himself feel less guilty about what had happened over the summer, but rafe wasn't going to complain about a new broom. even though he had told his father that his old one was okay, he'd insisted so here they were, shopping for a new broom. there was no guarantee that he'd make the team that year so he wanted to get one that would be okay for regular flying too. he ran his hand through his hair as he moved to the display in the window as his father talked to the shop assistant out the back of the shop, having gone out there to look at the newest stock of brooms. he glanced to the window and spotted someone he'd gone through school with. jamie greyback was standing there looking at the display. he panicked. he wasn't even sure she had seen him so in the back of his mind he didn't know why he was panicking but in a moment of gracefulness he tried to duck out of view of the window, knocking over a stand of quidditch accessories and a candle stick holder. which to his horror happened to fall on top of some fabric that had been knocked over and the flames suddenly got a little bigger. fire. he'd started a fire. "shoot! oh .. merlin!" he said as he grabbed something to try and put the small flames out with before they grew.

Jamie wasn’t paying that much attention to the scene around her – staring at brooms was kind of mesmerizing, actually – but when she caught a flash of movement out of the corner of her eye, she turned to face it. And a good thing, too, because whoever had moved had apparently managed to set something on fire. Jamie swung the door open – jerked it, really, because she wasn’t about to let her favorite store in the entire world go up in flames – and had her wand in her hand before she even registered what she was doing. “Aguamenti!” Jamie cast the spell with more authority than she thought she possessed, and she didn’t even sound panicked to her own ears. Everything was happening so quickly, and the rest of the store seemed like a blur. It wasn’t until she put out the flames that the Hufflepuff managed to look up and see the source of the fire, who was also the source of the movement who had caught her eye.
To her surprise, it was actually someone Jamie knew; Rafael Macmillan had been on the Quidditch team last year, a Chaser like her. She tried her best not to look disapprovingly at him, but really, how could she not look a little disappointed? He had almost burned down Quality Quidditch Supplies! “This was not the way I was hoping our first conversation since May would go.” Jamie said flatly. Hopefully Rafe was feeling suitably ashamed, otherwise Jamie would have to consider, for the first time in her life, being mean on purpose.

@jamie “This was not the way I was hoping our first conversation since May would go.” he looked up at the source of the water and looked straight into the eyes of one jamie greyback. conversation? he swallowed and reached with fumbling hands to grab something to busy himself with, he dabbed at the water with one of the robes that had fallen down and it slowly soaked up as he rushed over the things he could say in his head. hello? no what would be stupid after what she'd just said. defend his actions? well that would be a bit late. besides it had been an accident. there was nothing to defend. was there? well he had almost burned down the store. he shifted back to rest on his heels when the water had been mopped up and he swallowed again and nodded his head lightly. "i .. uh .. h-hoped?" he said, wishing to merlin that he wasn't so nervous and jumpy when trying to talk to girls. he chewed his lip as he made to stand up and looked at the shop keeper as he hurried back into the room. "i'm sorry .. i knocked a candle .. jamie here put the fire out" he said, keeping his bottom lip caught between his teeth as he looked back at his fellow hufflpuff.

Rafe was nervous, and Jamie didn’t know what to do or what to say. His whole aura wasn’t improving her mood at all – all he was doing was stuttering and bumbling and not helping the situation. She gave her best smile at the shopkeeper. “I’m so sorry, he’s always been clumsy, even on the Quidditch field.” She said with a good-natured laugh to put the man at ease. “If you need any more help cleaning up, I’d be happy to offer my services.” The shopkeeper, predictably, waved her off after discovering that none of the merchandise had been irreparably damaged, and returned to his position at the desk. Jamie returned her attention to Rafe, sighing. “Are you going to be blundering around like that on the field this season? Because if you are, I’m going to have to seriously consider giving your position to someone else.” Jamie hated using her position as captain to threaten anyone else, but if there was one thing that was not okay in her book, other than hurting her family, it was messing with Quality Quidditch Supplies. What would everyone have done if the whole place had burned down and there was no place to get brooms or anything? Jamie shook her head and sighed again. What had Rafe been doing to “accidentally” knock over a candle? Why were there even candles in the store in the first place? She just didn’t know.

@jamie “I’m so sorry, he’s always been clumsy, even on the Quidditch field.” rafes eyes widened a little. he wasn't clumsy on the quidditch field! why would they put a clumsy player on the team. it wasn't very likely. "that's not true and you know it" he said with a frown as he folded his arms over his chest. the sudden confidence he had felt when his quidditch talent was being questioned receded almost as quick as it had come up. he wasn't' a confrontational person. he'd much rather just let people say what they want and ignore it. but that had been unfair and below the belt. all because he had accidentally started a small fire. he hadn't meant to. “Are you going to be blundering around like that on the field this season? Because if you are, I’m going to have to seriously consider giving your position to someone else.” he shook his head and looked at her. again? she was going to question his talent again? that was rude. "you can't do that. and if you try .. i'll r-report you to headmaster longbottom. i'm a good player. i'm not clumsy on the field and i don't make mistakes on the field. this was an accident. i didn't mean it .. and it's not something you can take me off the team for" he said, chewing himself up on the inside. his brain was telling him to walk away so that was what he was going to try and do. he glanced back over his shoulder at his father. "dad? i'm going to get something to eat" he said as he moved to duck around jamie and walked toward the door. he picked at the end of his sleeve as he did, trying to hide any signs that he was still nervous as all hell.

Jamie knew that Rafe wasn’t clumsy on the Quidditch field, of course, but she had to say something to get the shopkeeper out of their hair, and the more charming and relatable she was, the quicker he left them. His attitude towards he was definitely not going to do, though. She was his team captain, and contradicting her wasn’t doing him any favors when it came to securing himself a spot on the team. Rafael had started a fire, and he expected her not to worry at least a little bit about how he was going to do on the Quidditch team? She rolled her eyes at the threat of talking to Headmaster Longbottom about being kicked off the Quidditch team. “I’ll have you know, it’s fully within my rights as team captain to make additions and subtractions to the team as I see fit.” Jamie snapped at Rafe. This was not the way she wanted to start her tenure as captain – she already had a beef with their Keeper, and now one of the Chasers was getting his head up his own ass, too? “And if you fail at tryouts, then I will have a perfectly legitimate reason to kick you off the team.” She answered smoothly. “So you’d better watch yourself, Macmillan. Just because your mother works for the school doesn’t mean I’m subject to your every whim.” Rafael was being so high and mighty. The headmaster wasn’t involved in Quidditch at all, so the other Hufflepuff’s implication that he would go straight to the highest power was infuriatingly superior. Jamie had been chosen as the team captain for a reason – because her Head of House trusted her judgment and planning skills. “Bye, Rafe.” She called as the boy left. Good riddance to him.
