Several of Poe's students had been stationed in Hogwarts as extra protection for the students in light of the Triwizard Tournament festivities, but he wasn't permitted to stay there with them; too many people were devoted to something that wasn't all that dangerous, and there were still some real problems outside of Hogwarts's sphere of influence. Poe was still worried about his students, though, and was trying to make an effort to meet with all of them every once in a while to check on them and see if they had any questions or concerns. There was also the fact that Poe genuinely liked most of his students and needed excuses to hang out with them now that he wasn't their direct supervisor.
Poe had asked Finn to meet him at the north side of Hogsmeade's Main Street, which was a stone's throw away from Hogwarts. Sure, it was a bit further for Poe, but what else was Apparition for? Poe was leaning nonchalantly against the side of one of Hogsmeade's many buildings, waiting for Finn to get off his shift so they could talk.

Finn was loving Auror duty at Hogwarts; he got to see his old classmates, he was paired up frequently with Rai to patrol, and when he wasn’t patrolling, he got to see Dominique. She seemed to be doing a lot better since last year, and while a small part of Finn hoped he had something to do with that, he was just glad she seemed happier. Fortunately, he hadn’t had any issues with patrolling; there were some kids he caught a few minutes outside of curfew, but they had been so close to their common rooms that Finn had let it slide. Merlin knew how many times he’d broken curfew while he was there; he would have felt hypocritical if he had turned them in for being a hair outside curfew.
Today though was his check in meeting with Poe. Finn wasn’t nervous; he felt he and Rai were doing the best they could, and if they had issues one of the more senior Aurors was always happy to give some wisdom and guidance. And Dom hadn’t distracted him that much. He set off from the castle down to Hogsmeade where Poe had asked him to meet him. As he saw his mentor leaning against one of the buildings, his smile broadened and he extended his hand. “Hey Poe, I hope I wasn’t keeping you waiting too long,” he said jovially.

Poe wasn’t sure how long he waited before he saw Finn approaching, down from the castle at the end of his shift. The trainee appeared happy to see him, and Poe was relieved by that. He wasn’t sure why Finn felt the need to shake hands, but hey, he’d humor the kid. Poe extended his hand as well, shaking Finn’s hand firmly but quickly. “Luckily for you, patience is one of my particular virtues.” He told Finn, smiling easily. The purpose of their visit wasn’t just to small talk, though, so Poe decided that he’d put Finn’s nose to the grindstone and start interrogating him about his time at Hogwarts. “How many trouble makers have you run into?” Poe asked. There was no question of if Finn had run into any rule breakers, because they were a dime a dozen at Hogwarts, as much as they believed that they were unique in their disregard for the school’s regulations. Poe hadn’t yet had a shift at Hogwarts, though he was planning to pick up a few to allow people to have some precious days off, so he didn’t know what level the delinquency was at that year. “And did you punish them?” He asked, eyebrow raising. There was some conflict of interest there, he knew, since his trainees knew some of the people who were breaking the rules, in all likelihood.

Finn smiled at Poe as he got right down to business; he had known this wasn’t a happen chance meeting, but really a duty report. “You know, surprisingly the delinquents all seemed to have graduated this past year,” he said, not bothering to hide his smile. He was, of course, referring to the group of students that referred themselves as the next Marauders, a group Finn himself had been apart of. They had caused quite a bit of mayhem in their day, well, less Casey when he received his Head Boyship, and had sometimes even rivals Fred’s father and uncle, or better yet James’ grandfather. His smile dropped a little as he remembered his meeting with Addilyn Slater. “There was one bullying case though that concerns me; a girl in Slytherin house told me about someone bullying her, so I brought it up to Astoria Malfoy. I figured with those sort of cases it’s best to let the Heads of Houses deal with them, as they know the situation far better than I do,” he reported. He hoped Addilyn was doing better; she had seemed quite down when they had spoken. He made a mental note to check in on her when he returned to Hogwarts. “Other than that, there’ve been a few students out of bed maybe one or two minutes outside curfew, but I’ve let them off with a warning. They’ve both been just outside their common rooms, so I felt to be too harsh on a first offense would leave a sour taste - we’re not their friends, but we don’t want them to feel like they have to fear us so they wouldn’t come to anyone if they saw something suspicious,” he explained, hoping that his reasoning made as much sense to Poe as it did to him, and he wasn’t in trouble.

Poe chuckled a little when Finn said that all of the delinquents had graduated in the past year. From what he had gathered, Finn had been one such troublemaker. He hadn’t pushed the subject much whenever Finn brought it up – he didn’t care much about what happened before anyone came into the Auror program, as long as they excelled when they were in it. He listened with slightly more concern when Finn described the bullying situation. Hogwarts had always had a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, and he was surprised that there were still people who thought they could get away with it. Finn had gone through all the correct channels by going through the Head of House, and Poe nodded when the trainee finished that part of the story. “That was the right thing to do.” He confirmed to Finn, in case the younger man didn’t already know.
What wasn’t the right thing to do, though, was allow students to stay out of bed after curfew, even if they were close to their dorms. “I understand your logic, Finn, and I appreciate it, but I’m not sure that was the best reaction to the situation.” Poe swallowed, licking his lips before continuing with his assessment of Finn’s actions. “If they think that leniency is the norm, then they might start taking more risks, staying out later…” He shook his head a little. “We’re not there to be their friends, like you said, and if being tough will keep them safer, then I think that’s a risk worth taking.” It was all a matter of opinion, but Poe wanted Finn to learn to see multiple facets of every situation, how every action could be right or wrong in different ways.
