It was a nice and sunny day out with a light breeze. Many students were out on the grounds, but there was only one at the pond so far. Maryn normally wasn't one for company when she came out to the pond, well maybe her dog Mina, a German Shepard. She was currently throwing the ball that she had transfigured from a rock, that she had found on the ground on her way to the Pond. It was sad that not many people came out to the pond on days like these. But Maryn didn’t really mind on bit, because it gave her time to think and also to relax. It helped calm her and also it helped to relieve any stress she had. It almost worked better than doing transfiguration which she had a unique talent for. And to top that off she is also a metamorphagus. Which was really fun.
As she waited for Mina to bring the ball back she heard a noise that sounded distinctly like footsteps, of a someone or something. She stood ready drawing her wand, if whoever or whatever it was meant her or Mina harm she wouldn’t hesitate to turn them into something. She noticed Mina come up next to her and knew that the dog was on high alert ready for anything.

Cori was wandering the grounds being a loner as usual when she saw Maryn and Mina in the distance, doing some cool magic by the pond. Cori and Maryn had met several years ago while avoiding a crazy crowd of Gryffindors doing who knows what on the grounds. The girls had hit is off and became friends, though it was hard at first since they were both so cautious toward one another. But the girls had become good friends and had each others backs. Cori approached Maryn from behind. She didn't mean to be scary, but she was used to walking slow. She also pulled out her wand and took the opportunity to have a good laugh. She started at a run and then pointed her wand at Maryn, "ARDVARK!" she shouted, not even a real spell.

Upon hearing the word aardvark she knew immediately who it was behind her. “Nice try Cori.” She said as she whipped around and turned her friend into an aardvark. “Oops, look who the aardvark is now.” She couldn’t stop herself from laughing. It took a minute or two but once she had stopped Maryn pointed her wand at Cori and turned her back into herself. “Don’t be mad, you know it isn’t a good idea to sneak up on me.” She said but on the inside she was berating herself for not moving faster when she had heard Cori approaching, she would probably be dead by now. She had to get faster, and be even more alert. Memories of the summer flashed before her eyes. She watched her dad die, over the summer. It was something that no child should have to see, but she and her sister had. She turned away from Cori and picked up the ball for Mina, who had relaxed now, but as she did so a couple of tears fell. Maryn wiped them away before turning back to her friend whom she hadn’t even told that her dad had been killed. Granted she didn't tell many people.
“So Cori what brings you all the way out here?” She asked while gesturing with a hand to their surroundings. Maryn Just stood there watching her friend, hoping that she wouldn’t be made at Maryn for turning her into an aardvark. Earlier she didn’t want any company, that is why she had come here in the first place, but now she wanted some company, and someone to talk to other than her dog. A light breeze blew some of Maryn’s hair into her face, which she pulled out of the way, and quickly tied her hair into a ponytail so it wouldn’t get in her face anymore.

Cori was an aardvark. She was not very happy about it. She pouted around running in circles as Maryn laughed. Dang, that girl was good at transfiguration. Once she was back to herself Cori was sitting on her but and started to laugh. "I know, I know. I just really thought I had you that time... you know, I wonder. Did I still have my curse as an aardvark?" She laughed again and stood up, brushing off her clothes. Cori noticed Maryn wiping her face as she stood to throw the ball for Mina. Cori didn't say anything, of course. For all she knew Maryn had just got a little dust in her eye. The girls had a mutual understanding, they didn't push each other. They said what they wanted to say when they needed to say it. It worked best for everybody.
"I was just wondering. You know me, over thinking things, wandering around like a broody teenager. The usual. Cori watched Mina catch the ball in the water and dance around happily, splashing as she went. Animals had it so easy. It was like they didn't have a care in the world. Cori shrugged, "I guess I wasn't expecting to see anyone worth talking to out here-hey! Don't you have a Quidditch match soon?" Cori asked. She really had no idea, she just wanted to make sure Maryn new she supported her love of the game.

"I know, I know. I just really thought I had you that time... you know, I wonder. Did I still have my curse as an aardvark?" Maryn new about the curse, well sort of. She never pushed Cori for the details and to if she was honest with herself, Maryn wasn’t sure she wanted to know. It was nice to have someone you could trust but at the same time there was an unspoken agreement that they would never push each other. They would just wait and let the other tell them when they were ready, if they ever were ready. “I’m not sure Cori. Next time you might try being quieter if you want to get me.” She said with a smile.
“We all wander around, that is how we ended up friends remember, that day when the Gryffindors were doing something crazy out here on the grounds.” Maryn said as she watched Mina playing in the water. She turned back to look at Cori when she heard. "I guess I wasn't expecting to see anyone worth talking to out here-hey! Don't you have a Quidditch match soon?" Maryn couldn’t help but smile at the mention of quidditch. It wasn’t something that they had talked about much. But Maryn also knew that Cori supported her love of the game and that meant a lot to Maryn. “Yup we do. We play against Slytherin in two weeks.” Maryn was confident that her team was ready to face the Slytherin team. But they still had two weeks to practice before the game. “So Cori what were you brooding about this time?” Maryn asked her friend as she felt a very wet German Shepard come over and rub her head against Maryn’s side. “Mina! You silly dog. Your not supposed to get me wet, like you are.” Maryn still had her wand out and dried herself off as she laughed. She decided to leave the Mina be since they were still outside and would be for quite a bit.

Cori nodded her head, "Well, you know me, always stomping around." Stomping around was about the last thing Cori would ever do, considering she preferred to go unnoticed, "The yelling is probably what did it, huh?" Cori laughed. She wasn't meaning to be stealthy at that part. Maryn was just too attentive to be snuck up on, which was a good thing in this world. Especially with all the madness going on at the school right now, things weren't safe and Maryn knew that. Although, Cori noted, Maryn did seem more tensed up than usual.
"Gryffindors." Cori rolled her eyes and smirked a little. That house was the most rambunctious set of fools Cori had ever met. But some of them weren't half bad, every house had a variety of people, no matter the similarities. Cori was grateful for that fact, because if everything was black and white Cori wouldn't have been sorted into any house. That thought was horrifying, it was best the way that it was.
"You guys will beat them, no problem." Cori encouraged. Cori often wore Hufflepuff colors during Quidditch matches, because one of her closest friends was on the team, the captain. Cori didn't have any intentions of cheering for any other team if Hufflepuff was playing, what point would there be in that? The Ravenclaws were good, sure, and Ethan was a nice captain but... it was just easier to cheer for one team.
"Mostly just about school stuff, lots of hard work." That wasn't entirely true, though schoolwork did cross her mind at one point. She was mostly thinking about some things Professor Longbottom had said about the curse. She sighed mentally, that curse was on her mind way to much. Cori laughed as Mina came back soaking wet. That dog was the happiest thing Cori had ever seen. Cori found herself wishing she was a dog.

"Well, you know me, always stomping around…The yelling is probably what did it, huh?" Maryn laughed as she nodded her head. “Well it wasn’t just the yelling and the stomping around, I mean we heard you quite a ways off. That is why we were ready.” It was only partially true, because in a real situation Maryn would have less time than what she did. “Yup. Gryffindor’s are quite the bunch aren’t they? Granted I only have a couple of friends in Gryfifndor. Even my one of my best friends is in that house. Ronan. He also plays quidditch. He is a really nice guy, even though he does like to play pranks and mess around a lot. Have you had the chance to meet him?” Maryn looked at Cori as she said all of this rather quickly, and blushing a little, like she had been holding it in. She really hadn’t noticed that she was blushing because she had said it so fast. She had become great friends with him, and even though she hadn’t realized it yet, she was slowly falling for Ronan.
“Thanks for the vote of confidence.” Maryn said thankfully. Because even though she knew that they would beat Slytherin it was always nice to hear a comment that was a confidence boost more than anything. "Mostly just about school stuff, lots of hard work." She could tell that there was something besides school on Cori’s mind but she wasn’t about to go and ask her what it was.
She wanted to tell someone about what had happened over the summer but she wasn’t even sure that she could do that, it was just too hard to do it. Granted she had talked with Professor Grey many times about it, and that helped but she wanted someone else to confide in as well. She didn’t want pity, she just wanted someone to listen. After watching Mina run around some more, Maryn looked off in the distance before asking, “Cori, would you mind if I told you something?” Maryn really hoped that Cori was up for listening to her, because she was ready to tell her about what had happened over the summer. And there was only one other person that she was going to tell, but that might not happen for a while yet.

Cori chose to address the situation of her poo sneaking skills later, and stuck to the discussion of Gryffindors, especially since Maryn seemed to have developed a giant smile on her face. Cori cocked her head to the side, "I've met Ronan, yes..." she spoke slowly, "we actually ran into each other on the staircases recently. It got stuck and we were forced to talk for a while." Cori shrugged. Ronan was a pretty decent guy, though Cori usually didn't take a liking to anyone-guys and girls alike, but he was easy to talk to. Cori pursed her lips and squinted her left eye, "yoooooou're blushing."
After a few moments of silence while watching the dog, Cori decided to bring up the events of earlier again, "What's got you so on guard anyway, Maryn? Cori as with legitimate concern. The girl had always been a good dueler, ready for anything, but she seemed more uptight than usual. More aware of her surroundings and willing to attack when necessary. This concerned Cori. Not that she didn't agree with the carefulness, but it was still unnerving to see a friend like that.
Her question was answered by Maryn asking if she could tell Cori something, and it looked serious. Cori nodded her head and leaned towards her friend, taking a moment to gently stroke Minas fur as she did so, before the dog ran off again. "Whatever you need to say, Maryn, I'm all ears," it was a strange thing for Cori to say, if it was to anyone else, but Maryn was one of the few people she trusted. Maryn was really her only friend at the moment, her only close friend.

Maryn smiled as her friend said that she had indeed met Ronan. She laughed at the predicament and circumstances that her friends had met under. "yoooooou're blushing." Upon hearing that statement from Cori, Maryn immediately stopped laughing at that and she turned her head just enough so that Cori wouldn’t see her blushing anymore, for her cheeks had become rather red as she blushed even more. “I am not blushing Cori!” She said letting out a rather audible huff hoping that Cori would let it drop, but Maryn knew that she wouldn’t and would most likely keep bugging her about it until she told her. It was just one of those things that they had fun doing was figuring out just who it was that the other liked.
The next question that Cori asked her made Maryn turn her head to look at Cori once more, well that is once she was sure that she had stopped blushing. Now it was a question that helped Maryn get her thoughts in order. “Cori I haven’t told anyone else about this.“ She began but at the same time she had to suppress the emotions that had bubbled up inside of her. “This summer was going great, well at least for a while. About a month into the break my dad, sister, and I were enjoying a day in muggle London together. But that wonderful day turned into a terrible one.” Several tears fell down her cheeks as she enlarged a rock on the ground so she could sit on it. Once she had sat down Maryn wiped at the tears that had fallen. “We were on some street in the middle of London, when it happened. We were surrounded by death eaters and they attacked us. You know how my dad was an Auror, well they were after him apparently. He told me to get my sister out of there, so I did the only thing that I could think of. I turned us both into animals just as a loud bang went off and then there was a lot of smoke. I could barely see anything. But I was able to get us over to a safe location to hide until it was over. It didn’t really last that long, but it felt like forever. Once the smoke cleared away I turned my sister and myself back to our regular selves. It didn’t even seem like a battle had taken place at all. And then I saw my dad he was just laying there looking in our direction, but I could tell that he was dead. After that everything was mostly a blur for the rest of the day. I do remember that Professor Grey showed up with several other people and then he took us home.” By this point Maryn was silently crying but she still kept a level head about it all.
“And for the rest of the summer Professor Grey would stop by and check up on us. But then on the day that we left to come here, I got a letter from my mom on the train. We had a big argument over it the week before school started. She wanted us to move to America. Can you believe that? However we my sister and I ended up winning the argument and so here we are. But getting back to the letter, my mom said that she had moved to America, and it was up to us if we wanted to continue here or move to America. I haven’t heard from her at all since then.” Maryn was still kind of upset at her mom for wanting to take them away from here. And plus she felt safe here with Professor Grey, she wasn’t sure why but she knew that where ever he was at she would be safe with him or even with his friends, mainly Samira who worked at the Hog’s Head. “So that is the answer to your question Cori.” Maryn said as she began to wipe the tears from her face. As she looked up at Cori. To see how her friend would respond or act to that information.

Cori laughed as Maryn tried to cover up the blushing. It was sweet, crushes and whatnot. Cori tried to shake the thought of relationships off as she watched Maryns face totally return to a normal color. Cori decided not to press the Ronan issue. Maryn would bring it up if she felt like it later on. Plus, the feeling that something was wrong started thickening the air. As soon as Maryn started to explain, Cori sat on the ground beside the rock Maryn was sitting on. Cori listened intently to every word her best friend uttered.
"Cori, I haven't told anyone about this," as soon as those words came out of Maryns lips, Cori felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. As the story went on Coris blood turned cold, colder than normal. She felt a pit slowly sinking deeper into her stomach. When tears started to slip silently out of Maryns eyes, Cori felt some coming at of hers as well, freezing as they came to the surface. Cori reached up and scraped the icicle particles off her cheeks. She had to do so every few seconds, or she would have icicles down her cheeks.
Cori shook her head as Maryn said, "So that is the answer to your question Cori." The silence filled the air for a moment. A lump caught in Coris throat. She reached forward and placed a hand on Maryns knee, looking into her eyes. Cori wore gloves and Cori only touched fabric, but the thought still counted. "Maryn, I am so sorry. I wish I could..." she felt the lump in her throat harden, "I know there is nothing I can say." Cori looked down and shook hear head, pulling her hand back into her lap.
"I have to say, I am glad you didn't go to America. Your mother shouldn't be upset about that. She should understand and," she sighed and looked back up at Maryn, "what do you need from me right now?"

Maryn was grateful that she had been able to tell Cori about what happened over the summer. They were both orphans now, Cori her whole life and then Maryn just a few weeks ago along with her sister. It was going to be difficult but she knew that they could do it. Maryn briefly grasped Cori’s hand and gave it a squeeze. She was glad that she had a friend such as Cori to confide in. Little did Maryn know that later that day she would be telling another person about what happened this summer. "I have to say, I am glad you didn't go to America. Your mother shouldn't be upset about that. She should understand and, what do you need from me right now?" Maryn smiled at the gesture and knew that it was a sincere one as well. “I am glad as well Cori that I didn’t go to America. I would have hated being there against my will and my mom recognized that by letting us stay here even though she abandoned us.“ Maryn paused for a second and wiped away a final tear from her cheek. “And as for what I need from you, well you have already given it to me. I needed someone to confide in and talk to and I am glad that it was you. It means a lot to me that you listened and I want you to know that if you ever need someone to talk to you always have me.”
She scanned the area for Mina and saw that Mina had moved over and had lain down under a tree and was apparently asleep. Silly dog tired herself out. “Looks like she tired herself out wouldn’t you say so?” Maryn asked as she watched her dog sleep. Maryn had another thing on her mind that she was going to ask. “So what is this I hear about a catfight between you and , oh who was it? ….Oh that is right Alice. Tell me what happened?” The whole school had heard about it by now the famous catfight between Cori and Alice. Part of Maryn wished she could have been there to see it but the question was who would she have supported Alice a fellow Badger or Cori her best friend/sister in all but blood. Well that was easy it would have been Cori without a doubt. But she wanted to know.

Cori kept her gloved hand clasped in Maryns as she spoke, grateful that she was someone Maryn trusted. Cori trusted Maryn more than anyone else because she had been one of her dearest friends since day one. She hated to see her suffer. "I will always be there for you, of course. And I know that you're there for me," Cori smiled softly at her best friend and slipped her hand away from her. It wasn't like Cori to make contact with someone for very long, even with her gloves and other fabrics in the way, but Maryn needed the support, and Cori wanted her to be sure that this was a special friendship.
It would be a lie if Cori said she wasn't relieved by the fact that Maryn changed the subject back to Mina. It made transitioning back to the present a little bit easier. Cori nodded as Mina slept and smiled, the dog was so sweet. Before Cori could comment however, Maryn was suddenly asking her about the recent fight with Alice. Cori rolled her eyes and chuckled, along with a sigh. "Oh gosh...." Cori laughed again at the memory even though her skin started to burn with anger. She looked up at Maryn and shook her head a little as she spoke, "well, it started with there being no room int he library so we ended up sitting at the same table..." She ran her fingers through her hair, "I threw the first insult. Long story short, she touched my hand but acted like nothing happened," Cori scoffed. "She thinks she so tough and special, you know? I can't believe her," she growled.

Maryn considered Cori as another sister, since both of them kind of had similar attitudes towards most things. "I will always be there for you, of course. And I know that you're there for me," She was happy at this outcome and that they had become friends rather quickly the first time that they met, and they could always rely on one another. Maryn was just happy that at least some things had not changed all that much in her life, especially her friendship with Cori, and after being able to tell her friend that Maryn knew deep down that their friendship was growing stronger and stronger.
She raised an eyebrow as her best friend spoke. "well, it started with there being no room int he library so we ended up sitting at the same table... I through the first insult. Long story short, she touched my hand but acted like nothing happened…She thinks she so tough and special, you know? I can't believe her," Wow, she couldn’t believe one of her own house mates would have the audacity to get into an altercation with Cori. But she couldn’t imagine it being Alice. But then yet again she had only met Alice for the first time the other night in the common room which was kind of funny since they shared a dorm for the past seven years.
Maryn rolled her eyes at the mention that Alice acted like nothing had happened. But Maryn new better that, for she had touched Cori’s skin once, and that was because her friend allowed her to do such a type of thing and it made Maryn feel cold all over and that was just a by touching Cori’s skin for a few seconds. “She has some serious issues if she thinks that picking a fight with you is a good thing. And I don’t believe for a second that she thinks that she is tough, but from what I have seen she isn’t.” Maryn stated with the small hint of a memory, it was possible that she might have been using wandless magic, which would give her away but she had made sure that only Cori could here what she had just said.

"Ah, we've been fighting for years. She's had that problem for almost a decade." Cori chuckled, running her fingers through her hair. It was true, the girls had been fighting since their first year at Hogwarts, but it only got worse as time went on. It didn't help that Cori was close friends with Alices cousin, Fin. Cori raised an eyebrow at Maryn about the comment referring to seeing Alice in a different light. "What do you mean?" Cori leaned in as she asked. Sure, Alice and Maryn were in the same house so they probably had seen a lot of each other on and off. But Maryn sounded like she knew something more. Or, perhaps Maryn was just using her general skills of observation. Maryn could always read people pretty well.
Cori leaned back and sighed, watching the waves ripple in front of her. What was she going to do once she graduated? She would definitely not plan on seeing Alice ever again, that was for sure. Just the thought of that blonde Huffle made Coris blood boil. She really couldn't pinpoint exactly why she hated Alice so much. Maybe it was because they were a lot alike, or maybe it was because Alice had a great family and still acted like her life was a tragedy. Anyone with a fully functional family, not too mention a dad at the school with her, had no right to act like their life was so hard. At least not in an Orphans opinion.
Nah, Cori was being to harsh. Everyone had their problems. Cori just wished she didn't hear about them. Except for Maryns, of course, and her other friends. When she found some.

"Ah, we've been fighting for years. She's had that problem for almost a decade… What do you mean?" Maryn let out a light chuckle and then at Cori’s raised eyebrow and question, Maryn decided to go ahead and tell her friend exactly what she meant, by what she had said. “Well for one, I have only really talked to her once, seeing as how she usually shuts herself away on her bed with the curtains drawn and a book for company. But no she is not all that tough, she is more of a daddy’s girl than anything, but at the same time she wouldn’t hurt a fly unless she absolutely had to. But to be honest I am not sure what to think of her, she can be sweet and other times, completely self-absorbed and not really worry about the rest of us. But then yet again, I have not gotten to know her that well yet, so there might be something else to her.” Maryn said all of that in a cold and icy tone, in a way the coldness/iciness sounded like how one felt when they ended up touching Cori’s skin.
She wasn’t sure why her tone of voice had been so cold, maybe she was already taking sides, and siding with Cori on this one, and then a thought crossed her mind telling her not to get mixed up with Alice. But no if possible she would become friends with Alice as well and try and get these two to see past their differences.
“So Cori, how is your research going and is there anything that I can do to help you out?” Maryn asked her friend. She knew that Cori didn’t like talking about it but she wasn’t really doing that now was she? No she was just wondering if her friend had found any new information, and she also wanted to help if at all possible.
