The Monsters walk among us It was strange, Grey was actually looking forward to meeting Edmund. He regretted not being close to Addi the past few years, because he was sure the boy would have come up in conversation more than once, especially if the two of them had been friends since first year. Straying away from his siblings may have been one of Grey’s biggest mistakes so far in his 17 years of life. At the same time, he couldn’t imagine being where he was now without any of that happening, so he had come to compromising the cons of his past with the pros of the present. If these events surrounding Addi and Edmund had occurred a year ago, he probably wouldn’t have taken notice at all, only hearing about it in passing or much later on. “It sounds like Edmund and I have more in common than I thought then, having issues with older siblings and all that.” Grey muttered. He wasn’t keen on pulling his own issues into their conversation, but it slipped out. His problems with Claire were solely his own, so it was wrong of him to blame her for his own shortcomings. So it was like he had assumed, Theodosia was a younger students. And a ballsy one at that, going after older students like she was. He couldn’t help but think this deep seeded hatred for Addi was because she was jealous of her, maybe having attempted going after Edmund prior to that. His face contorted in disgust as Addi described her personality. “That’s good to know. Sounds like an interesting young lady. Gotta love those blood purists. They’re a special brand of ignorance.” Grey was becoming increasingly interested and scared at the same time. There was something very, very wrong for fifth year student to act that way. He expected a superiority complex out of adults and older students, but not a little girl. “I’ll be fine, I know I said I’d put her in her place earlier, but I’m sure I’ll be able to arrange something with her. Might have to be a little forceful, but bullies will give in eventually.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Addilyn hoped Grey was looking forward to meet Edmund. She wanted them to get along, however Addi wasn't sure how all of that would go. Grey didn't have a brother, and she was pretty positive that his only male friend was Kyle. But she could be wrong, since they weren't exactly completely close. But she'll find out soon. Addi's eyes narrowed when she heard Grey mumble about older siblings. Was his relationship with Claire really that bad? As bad as Edmund's was with Will? "What's going on with you and Claire, Grey?" She was obviously concerned, and she wanted to make sure it was all okay.
Grey made a scrunched up face and Addi laughed. She had never really seen him so relaxed and calm around her. He was usually pretty stiff around her and she was enjoying this. "She's definitely not someone you usually expect, but she is a true Slytherin." Addilyn's first year, when she was sorted into Slytherin, she got made fun of a lot. She wasn't the typical Slytherin you'd expect and people disliked her for that, just like Theo was now. "Good luck with that, Grey." She laughed nervously; Theodosia wasn't someone who gives in.

The Monsters walk among us True Slytherin or not, there were ways to break everyone. There were a million and one reasons this little girl did what she did, and Grey would exploit every possibility if he needed too. He didn’t like telling people often, but conducting interviews in the school paper over the last few years had taught him how to read others. Usually that helped when trying to think of questions on the spot or reading the situation so as to avoid touchy subjects, but he knew it would be of some use against Theodosia. “Thanks. I don’t think it’ll be a pretty result, but I’ll do my best.” What was wrong between him and Claire? Everything and nothing at the same time. But he couldn’t put it that way because it would only confuse Addi. Hell, it confused him most of the time too. The true ones to place the blame on were their parents. They had created the perfect storm; one where Claire would be praised for succeeding and Grey was left in the dust, there but not really. Where he had faltered was letting them get to him, he should have known better than to allow grown adults get on his nerves. But he didn’t, and they had, and now there were repercussions to all of it. Somewhere along the way Claire had become aware of his dislike of her, and that was it. He thought that maybe she would prod him along, show him a path to getting better grades and impressing their parents, but she let him go, just like that. With all that running through his head, he wasn’t sure how to answer Addi. There was no easy way to tell her what was going on. “I don’t understand her. And maybe I’m making it up, but I feel like mum and dad wanted me to be more like her. Now that it’s too late for that, I think all three of them have given up on me, in one way or another.” That was hard to say. He wasn’t necessarily upset by admitting it, but it felt a little better to get it out. “At the same time, I think I may have caused a lot of it. Wanting to be my own person and all that junk. What I can’t figure out is why they don’t realize that I’m different from Claire, and that I’ll never be like her because they think I would be happier that way.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

She nodded. "Just don't get hurt, Grey. That's all. I wouldn't forgive myself if anything happened to you..." Addi would rather get hurt herself or teased by Theodosia ten times over then have her do something that could potentially hurt her brother. Yes, he was two years older than Theo, but she seemed very trained in hurting other people and that worried her. Why does a fifteen year old know how to do these things to people? It wasn't healthy.
Addilyn knew she was always extremely close to Claire. She also knew that Grey wasn't. And as much as her family tried to keep her out of their business and arguments, she had always been standing up at her door, with her ear up against it, straining to hear her parents words to her brother and sister. Being the youngest was hard as much as it was good. She never knew anything. Her parents always kept her in the dark and Claire always assumed she was too immature to know anything. But with Grey, it was different. It was always different with him. She wanted to know what was going on, and she always wanted to make him feel better after he spoke to their parents. Her eyes filled with concern as she turned to face him. "I know it's not much, but I haven't given up on you, Grey. I'm proud of you." Addi put her hand on shoulder, and gave him a small smile. "Everyone is their own person, Grey. They know that. And I don't want you to be like Claire, I want you to be like you."

The Monsters walk among us Grey nodded at Addi as she warned him, showing that he understood. He wasn’t really sure what would happen with Theodosia, it could be the ugliest meeting ever or go peaceful; most likely the former. Somehow he had managed to avoid the awful little blood purists for six of his seven years at Hogwarts, but it was starting to look like there was no avoiding this one. From the way Addi put it, this girl was in a league of her own too. How wonderful. Whenever it looked like good things were on the horizon someone always had to arrive and mess it all up, and Theodosia seemed like a professional bully that had perfected the art of ruining people’s lives. Not for long though, especially if she rubbed Grey the wrong way. He’d never physically hurt the girl, more like ruin any aspects of her social life with his newspaper. The newspaper had some surprisingly wonderful benefits attached to it. He was somewhat relieved when Addi confirmed that it was better for him to be his own person. Grey knew that already, somewhere deep down inside of him, but the reassurance was comforting. He had spent so long trying to be just like Claire and giving it all up when he realized it was fruitless was one of the hardest things he had ever done. Then he had to turn around and build himself back up to where he was now. That had been easier, but would have been impossible without some of his friends there. He had to make sure to thank them at some point, and that would more than likely shock a few. “I’m kind of glad I’m like this now. Nothing against Claire, but the way she’s been the past few months, I don’t think she would have helped you out with Edmund or Theodosia if she was at school. Just my two cents though.” Being so distant from his older sister had its perks every once in a while. The Claire he knew from school was completely different from the Auror Claire, and maybe that was a part of growing up. At the same time, Grey hoped that didn’t mean he would change once again, the thought of that scared him a little bit. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Addilyn nodded her head at her brother. She was sure his words were correct. Things with Claire had changed. She used to send owls to Addi constantly while she was at Hogwarts. However, lately, she hadn't heard from her. She wasn't sure if it was something she had done, or if Claire just didn't care anymore. Maybe she'd find out soon, but as of right now, having Grey close with her was enough.
"I don't think she would have either, but you know, up until a few weeks ago, I probably wouldn't have thought you would help either, Grey." Addilyn loved her sister, they had been so close as children but unfortunately as they got older their relationship was distant. And she wanted to know if everything with Claire was okay, just like she had wanted with Grey. Addilyn sometimes felt like the 'fixer' of the siblings. She was the only one who really was happy all the time, and the only one who really shared her feelings. Grey and Claire were similar in that way; more introverted.

The Monsters walk among us She had a point, Grey probably wouldn’t have helped her if this had happened last year. Then again, it was impossible to tell. Under the right circumstances, he probably would have supported her through it if she really needed it. But there was something severely wrong with the Grey from a year ago. He would have rather seen Addi work through it on her own and learn how to deal with it without someone else there to help, and he realized now that following that line of thinking was really disturbing. Everyone needed help from time to time, some more than others. People also experienced hardships at varying degrees, so where Grey wouldn’t give a damn about Theodosia bullying him, the same type of treatment Addi was getting now showed a different result. He was also more worried about running the school paper on time, keeping up to date with the attacks that occurred during the school year. Grey would have died for his work last year, another change he had made coming back for his final year of education. Work was never as nearly important as another person’s life, and it had taken him an entire year of producing news stories about that to finally figure it out. The worst part about it was that he never once worried about Addi’s safety, because she was a half-blood, and the only ones being attacked were muggleborns. And somewhere in his head that seemed ok, because as long as it wasn’t happening to him, it didn’t make a difference. “You’re not wrong about that…” He trailed off. What else was there to say about it? Grey knew he had been an awful person and now he was trying to make up for it. “But I also don’t want you to think that I’m doing this because I feel like I owe it. I actually want to stay like this. Claire might be harder to fix things with, but I’m sure we could work something else out. We both have our problems I guess.” He wasn’t sure what was going on with their older sister, but it seemed like it was far worse than what Grey had dealt with. It could have stemmed from work, but that didn’t sound like her, getting emotionally effected so easily. They’d figure it out eventually. “Addi, if it ever looks like I start to go back to how I was, punch me in the face. And if you can’t, have Edmund or Kyle do it for you.” He said turning to look at her. “I like everything the way it is right now. Going back isn’t an option anymore.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Addilyn watched her brother through his thought process. She could see his entire face frown, the small sparkle that was in his eyes disappeared. Her own smile turned into a frown. She could see how angry he was at himself, how much he now realizes how wrong he had been for doing that to his sister's. Addi just wanted him to be happy and okay.
"I'd like to stay like this too, Grey. I don't want to go back to how things were...I like being able to tell you things, and I like when you tell me things too." Addilyn felt like that meant he could trust her. That was all she ever wanted. She didn't want the brother that ignored her, the brother that couldn't care less if she was happy or sad or hurt. Even this past summer, Addi wouldn't have been able to tell you if Grey loved her. She felt like she was a nothing to him. And when Kyle was there, it was like Grey couldn't stand to be in the same room with Addilyn. She doesn't know if she'll ever be able to tell Grey how bad he has hurt her, because she wants him to stay happy. Her thoughts of the past had made her eyes fill with tears, but she didn't want them to fall. She had cried too many times over her brother, and it wasn't something she wanted to do ever again.
Addilyn coughed, and then sniffled. She looked right back at her brother. "I could never punch you, Grey. And Edmund would be too afraid to. Kyle, maybe. But I wouldn't tell him to... I'd probably just try to talk to you like normal, and if that didn't work..." She didn't want to say what she was thinking. Because she knew she'd just let him go back to the way he was and they'd be back at square one. Addi looked down at her nails, and then back to Grey. "Please don't do that..." Her voice cracked, and a tear fell, slowly grazing her cheek.

The Monsters walk among us Addilyn’s response to him staying the way he was right now was reassurance that everything he was doing was the right thing. Being there for her, sticking up for her, helping her out when she needed it, essentially everything that he should have been doing as an older brother. Even though only a year divided the two of them, he was still the eldest of the two and it was his responsibility to make sure she was doing well. Sadly, Claire hadn’t done that for him after his first few years of school. He supposed that he had taken his disdain for what she had done and turned it around on Addi without realizing it. Claire had done a good job keeping track of her though, but for how long that would continue, he was unsure. “That’s what family is for right? Took me a while to learn that again.” From everything he had said so far, it looked like she was going to cry again, fighting back the tears this time. This whole time she hadn’t given up on him when he decided to charge on ahead, leaving her behind. His comment about being punched was definitely applicable tenfold right about now, that was apparent. If Addi couldn’t do it, and Edmund and Kyle wouldn’t, then Claire surely would. Hell that might even be easy for her. For being as highly intelligent as she was, being an Auror was no easy task, and the training included hand to hand combat, in the cases where it might be necessary. Getting knocked out cold would make everyone in the Slater family happy in the long run, including Grey. It would literally knock sense into him about how he had been acting. “Remember, that’s only if I go back to the way I was, and I don’t intend to do that. I’d be a fool if I did that. I was a fool. There’s too many other things that are more important now.” Eventually he’d have to end up telling her about why he entered the Triwizard Tournament, something that had somehow escaped conversation thus far, as well as becoming an Auror after graduation. The more pressing matters though; meeting Edmund and dealing with Theodosia, they were real and present. They were both here to stay for now, not possibilities like the tournament or being an Auror. It was best to deal with the present now instead of worrying about the past. Grey was done with that. He’d learned his lesson. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Addilyn hoped with every piece of her being that Grey would never go back to the way he was. It wasn't just that he was miserable, but he had made those around him feel the same. Even Addi. Granted, she never showed anyone that, that was kept for herself in the privacy of her bedroom. It hurt her to think of him being that way again. "I'm glad you learned it again, Grey. I don't know how much longer I could go without you acting like my brother." It made her sad to think that she had almost, almost given up on him. After a couple years trying so hard to just get him to crack a smile, Addilyn was stuck and she hadn't known what to do. Apparently, breaking her nose fixed all of that. She loved him for that. He had been so sweet, so calm, and he had fixed her nose. Even now, she got emotional thinking of it. Addi had never actually just sat and cried over the pain she had endured. It was a simple tear here and there, because she knew if she had a good, long cry, she may have given up. Then this Grey would never be sitting right next to her.
Giving her brother a small smile, she coughed. "I would call you a fool, but that wouldn't be very nice of me." Addi couldn't bring herself to be mean to Grey; not to call him names, nothing. Mostly because she was too afraid he'd just walk away and leave her behind again, but also because she just didn't want to. She loved him. And you know what she founds sad, as she thought that? She's never actually told him that before. They've never told each other that they love them. She brought her knees up to her chin, and rested her cheek on her chin, watching Grey. So many memories buzzed through her head as another tear fell. She smiled.

The Monsters walk among us If he hadn’t been acting like a brother, what exactly had he been doing? Grey wasn’t exactly intent on poking further into that topic right now. He was sure that he was doing the right thing now, and the fog that had clouded his judgement was hopefully gone for good. The only person he could really blame for all of it was himself, despite wanting to continue using Claire and his parents as the scapegoats for all of his problems. They were his family, and he had to start seeing them that way again even if they didn’t return the favor. If he could do that with Addi, then the other three would be significantly easier. His younger sister was there to help him now. First would be Claire, since there was obviously something that was blocking Grey from understanding her, and vice versa. As much as he hated thinking about sitting down with her eventually to talk it out, it needed to be done. They’d all be happier if they could resolve these petty issues. “I know, I was actually a jerk, so you calling me a fool would actually make me feel better.” He couldn’t help but laugh at this. It was nice to be able to make light of his past self, and know that Addi felt the same way, despite not wanting to actually admit it. Without putting much thought into it, Grey looked down at his watch. His eyes widened as he realized how much time had passed already. Jumping to his feet, he made sure he had all of his belongings on him before looking down to Addi. He had completely forgotten that he had been heading back to the Gryffindor common room earlier to finish up a paper due the next day. The morning spent laying around outside was to get the laziness out of his system, and now here he was, procrastinating without even realizing it. “I’m sorry Addi, I have to run. Here I am trying to do better with my studies and I’m pushing off an important paper already. I’ll let you know how my talk goes with Theodosia, and I look forward to meeting Edmund.” Grey smiled at his sister. “I’m glad you found someone. It sounds like he really cares about you.” Waving goodbye to her, Grey fast-walked down to the end of the hallway, making it just in time to hop on one of the moving stairways. He was relieved that things were finally starting to look up with his family. Addilyn laughed. She was sure she could call him a fool, and many other, worse things, but she didn't want to. And maybe Grey wanted her to do something worse, but goodness! He was her older brother. Addi couldn't imagine hurting him. Granted, she may have wanted to a couple of times in the past, but not anymore! Especially not with the way he's been acting towards her lately.
Addi's eyes widened as Grey stood up abruptly and said he had to go. She smiled back at him and nodded her head. "He does...I'm glad I have him. I hope it goes well...and I can't wait to see you again!" Addilyn waved back at Grey, smiling softly.
