The Monsters walk among us Finally moving around was a godsend. Grey had a feeling that the goo had some kind of residual muscle binding effect because it was relatively hard for him to move without every inch of his body either popping or cracking. Doing the best he could not to make a pained face during their first few meters of walking, eventually it started to feel like all of the kinks were out and everything was back to normal. If it wasn’t from the goo, than the sleeping up against a tree would definitely have done its part. He needed to start reserving naps for the library, or at least somewhere more comfortable. “As long as my body isn’t found, then you’ll be fine. I promise I won’t tell if you beat me into submission.” Like there would be any reason to tattle to the aurors in the first place. Snitches got stitches, and there was a possibility they would be his future coworkers. No need to get on their bad side before he even joined, thus why he was trying to be a little more careful than usual about wandering around at night or going into areas that were restricted. If Rai had really wanted to, she probably could have nabbed him for being so close to the forest on his own. Maybe he was lucky that she was the one that had found him. Finn probably would have dragged him by his feet further in because it was funny. Grey would have gotten a kick out of that as long as there weren’t any spiders involved. That was where he drew the line. “Enough about me, since it seems like we’ve only talked about how I’ve been.” Somehow their last few encounters seemed to automatically default to how he was doing. While Rai usually said something along the lines of being like usual or happy about everything, it didn’t seem like that was how she was today. She had said she wasn’t feeling good earlier, so it could have just been that. While the house elves did provide some pretty good meals, there were still mistakes and food poisoning could happen. “How’ve you been lately? Or is the job taking up most of your time?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai scrunched her nose at him and chuckled at his words about fining a body and beating him into submission. "You better just behave yourself without me having to resort to that, Slater," she joked along, chuckling as she returned her face to a relaxed state. She liked this playful banter they'd always had between them. Heck, she was kind of that way with all of her closest friends, but Grey was the only one that she ever really beat up. She chuckled at the thought, glancing back at Grey as he spoke again, asking about how she'd been.
Rai always had a way of making the other person in the conversation feel more important. She just liked it that way, making sure they felt heard and taken care of. It wasn't too often that they actually thought to return the favor, and she wasn't always prepared for it. She shrugged, looking away from him to keep her eyes ahead as she answered. "I've been fine," she shrugged. Really, she felt much better now that she was walking, but that deep sunk feeling of unpleasantness was still bothering her. She shook her shoulders a little, "yeah, the job takes up a lot of my time, I guess. I don't know. We have pretty decent rotations. On my time off I try to talk to my-" she stopped again. She sighed, looking down at her feet. "I'd rather hear about you," she replaced that grin on her face and looked back up at him, "though, I guess I know everything there is to know by now, dont' I?"

The Monsters walk among us “But behaving isn’t fun. You know that.” He smirked at Rai. Acting like a mature adult in front of other adults was usually the method Grey followed. Even around younger students too. But Rai and Finn were a different story. They were all close enough that acting formal around them was strange, even if they had jobs and rules that they needed to follow now. Taking that a step further, the way he acted around Rai was more out there than with Finn. He wasn’t sure if he knew the words that would explain it all the way. He had always thought it was being comfortable around her, which was weird to say since there was always something constantly happening when Rai was in the room. Maybe it was that excited drive she had, the one that he lacked most of the time that drew him in. Grey knew that if he stuck with Rai there would be an unlimited supply of fun, new things that followed. Taking the steps towards being an auror was partially fueled by that need, among many others. As they continued their walk, Rai finally answered him about how work was going. Grey wasn’t really worried about how work was fairing though. He knew that it wasn’t too rough yet, since school had just started. Her earlier comment about her brother, the one where she had stopped midway, that was concerning. He hadn’t really intended to bring it up again, but her response was practically begging him too. She was fine? Rai would never use a bland word like that. That, and the fact that she was using phrases like she guessed or didn’t know. If that wasn’t an indicator that something was going on, he didn’t know what else was. She was silly not to realize how obvious it was to him. “Rai, you’re not fine. I’m not stupid.” Grey stopped walking. “I was going to go along with it, but it sounds like you want to talk about whatever it is.” Being forceful was awful, but it was the only way he was going to get her to talk. “So spit it out, or I’ll hex you to high hell until you finally tell me.” He pulled his wand out from his pocket to show her he wasn’t kidding. In a way, he hoped Rai wouldn’t take it as hard as his sister would have. Grey knew she could take a stern talking too, especially when someone wanted to cut to the chase. Rai wasn’t herself, and he was going to get to the bottom of it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai smirked as he said 'behaving wasn't fun'. "Well... I suppose I agree with you on that point," she chuckled. Really, she wasn't a rule breaker. Not even a little bit. But, when it came to misbehaving in the sense that she was picking on Finn and Grey... well, there was nothing that cheered her up faster. In fact, the thought crossed her mind to play a little trick or something on him now but, alas, she had already encased him in jello. She decided to be nice and give him a chance to walk it off.
Awe, she had a feeling Grey would call her out, and she was glad she did- even if it was only a subconscious call for help. He had stopped walking and she stopped too, turning slightly to toward him as he spoke. She felt bad that she had pretty much forced him to be forceful, but maybe that was what she needed, otherwise she'd never get into this. And she needed to get into this, even if she wouldn't admit that outright. She was too stubborn. Then he pulled out his wand and her jaw dropped slightly, but the look of surprise quickly formed into a small half smile. "All right, all right. You win, Grey," she held one hand up and reached the other toward his wand arm, gently clasping his wrist to attempt to push his hand down. It was all in good nature, though. She wasn't even a little bit mad at him, of course not. This was Grey. He wouldn't do anything unless he thought it was best for her. Or if it was just for fun. "But we can keep walking. I need to move my feet," she turned on her heel, released his wrist, and started walking again.
Then the floodgates broke. "Uriah, my half brother, works at this club. He's treated us terribly my whole life. He hates me. He thinks that I'm more 'privileged' than he is. More loved, or whatever," she rolled her eyes and continued, "anyway, I went to see him at that club back in June. He was horrible. We fought, like we always do. He said that he," she swallowed angrily, blinking hard, "he said we were strangers and that 'he didn't want to work this out'."
She took a breath, "then I ran into him in Hogsmede last week and we just fought again," her gaze was straight ahead, her hands still clenching at her sides. "I just don't want to believe in lost causes," she said softly, "I don't want to be that person."

The Monsters walk among us He honestly wasn’t expecting Rai to give in that easily. She had sounded like she wanted to talk about what was bothering her yet wouldn’t ask directly. So when she grabbed onto his wrist after he had pointed his wand at her, he knew there he had been right all along. And her telling him that he won? That was a pretty damn nice ego booster. Usually he gave up first because arguing or fighting was too much effort. Still, the slight pressure from her grabbing his arm and telling him she’d talk, he put his wand away the second she let go. Following through on his word was important too. Pocketing the wand, he nodded in agreement to keep walking and jogged up next to her so he could hear what she was obviously dying to say. As soon as he was in stride next to Rai, she started letting everything out. It was all about her half-brother, and the issues they had with one another. Grey couldn’t help but feel bad because she had always tried to help him understand Claire, but he had never returned the favor. Obviously this was an issue that had persisted her entire life. She said so herself. He understood problems between siblings; he was a prime example of how not to be a good brother, at least as far as he was concerned. Addi would say different, probably still not seeing the faults he had even though he was refusing to talk to her, all for her sake of course. Silently listening to everything Rai had wanted to get out, Grey started thinking of what he needed to say. It was quite clear that her brother, Uriah, was not a good person. Grey had initially thought that it was going to be a similar case to his, but the more she described how he treated her, the more it pissed him off, mainly because he could see how he was probably doing that to his sisters right now as well. He thought long and hard after she finished talking, especially about how she had stated not wanting to be the one to give up, especially on something that might be a lost cause. Grey believed she was right about that in some way. At the same time though, she had already tried her entire life. If Uriah didn’t want to have anything to do with her all that time, then what would make him change anytime soon? “Rai…I think you might have to. It sounds to me like he doesn’t want anything to be fixed. And you don’t deserve someone that treats you awful in your life.” He swallowed, thinking about how much that applied to his own life as well. What made him any better than Uriah? Their situations were slightly different, yes, and he did care about Claire and Addi, but their intentions of not wanting to fix things were definitely closely associated. “Ultimately that’s up to you though. If he doesn’t want things to be fixed, then he will go out of his way to make sure that doesn’t happen. And if he ever decides that he wants to work things out, then he’ll be the one to approach you. I don’t think it’s worth it to keep chasing after him when he clearly doesn’t want anything to change.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

She stayed silent after she finished speaking, waiting to see what he had to say about it. She felt bad complaining about Uriah when Grey had his own siblings problems. But then he spoke, and she found her feet stopped moving and she turned toward him. At first she felt anger rising up in her blood. He was actually suggesting that she give up? Did he even know her at all? She tried to stay poker faced, though, and failed miserably. Her eyes quivered and her jaw was clearly clenched. She thought about the words he was saying, though, and her heartbeat calmed slowly. He was just saying what he thought was best for her. That she didn't deserve someone like Uriah in her life. He thought that Uriah would be the one to approach her when the time came, and she didn't believe that day would ever come. At least, not a day where he would make the first move. Yet, Grey was kind of making sense... he said that it wasn't worth it to keep chasing after him when he didn't want anything to change, and Rai let out the breath she didn't know she was holding.
She turned away just a little, folding her arms over her chest and shaking her head. She didn't speak for a moment, trying to gather her thoughts on all this. She knew Grey only wanted what was best for her. Of course. But she still didn't know how to respond. She wasn't going to give up. She wasn't going to stop pushing. She knew that. She sighed, then turned back to Grey with a weak little smile. "I suppose I have to be patient with him but... I still have to try. You can understand hat, right Grey? That I'll never give up?" her voice was confident, yet not commanding. She just wanted to make it clear that she was serious about this. That she wasn't going to give up on anything. She had learned that last year. That giving up didn't do anyone any good.

The Monsters walk among us It took a moment for him to realize that Rai had stopped walking midway through his little rant about her brother, and what he thought was her best course of action. After finishing up what he had to say, he turned to finally face her, realizing the grave mistake that he had probably just made. He had a habit of speaking his mind and providing what he would probably do if he were in somebody else’s shoes. For whatever reason, it always came out of his mouth sounding like he was telling them what they should do, even though it was his opinion on the whole thing. Rai had confided in him, and here he was telling her to back off of her brother’s case and to give up. Grey knew her better than that and yet he still said all of it. The expression on her face when he had finally turned around was something he hadn’t seen from her in a long time. Giving that “advice” had definitely been a bad idea. But then again, it was also the best solution. It sounded to him like Uriah wasn’t planning on fixing anything between him and Rai. Why keep pushing that further? Was it really worth the pain and suffering that accompanied it? Grey certainly didn’t think so, but he would also back out of something at the drop of a hat if given the chance. He wasn’t one to talk, especially when it was about something that concerned Rai. The silence that followed was antagonizing. He must have really pissed her off with what he had said. The crossed arms, the turned head, pretty much everything that had followed him talking was a pretty good indicator that he had said exactly what she didn’t want to hear. Finally, Rai turned back to face him and spoke. Grey nodded along. He knew she wouldn’t give up that easily despite the whole situation looking like a lost cause. Somewhere down the road, Grey didn’t want to turn this into a “told you so” situation, but it definitely had the potential to become one. Still nodding his head in agreement, he reached his arm back and scratched his head. “I understand. It wouldn’t be very Rai-like to give up.” He let out a small laugh, thinking if there was anything else to say. “Just…” Grey started, before stopping once again. “Just know that there’s nothing wrong with backing out. I don’t know anything about your brother other than what you’ve told me, but if he tries to hurt you Rai, more than he already has, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with giving up on him. He might be related to you, but it doesn’t sound like he wants to be part of your family. You have plenty of other people out there that already consider you more like family, maybe even more than he ever will.” Grey finally stopped talking and shrugged his shoulders, unsure if there was anything else to add. He felt like he had already overstepped his boundaries, especially when Rai had only wanted to get the whole ordeal off her chest. He hoped she wouldn’t have the same response as earlier. Rai wasn't sure if Grey was nodding because he actually understood or if he was just trying to placate her. She wouldn't like it if he was just trying to make her happy... but she knew better than that. He wouldn't lie to her, even in that way. He reached back to scratch the back of his head as he spoke, which Rai took as a sign that she'd made him unsure or uncomfortable. She held her ground, though, waiting to see what he'd say first. She'd always take someone's words over their body language. So, he said he understood, and how it wouldn't be like her to give up. That caused her to smile just a little, especially at the small laugh he let out. Then he started to talk again and she leaned toward him slightly, showing that she was listening, her eyes fixed on him.
He was being completely honest, she could tell, and her gaze softened. His comment towards the end, about other people considering her family more than Uriah ever would, caused her heart to ache. He was right, of course. She should be focusing on those relationships more so that her brother. She waited a moment, gave a small nod, and then moved forward to wrap her arms around his neck in a hug. She stayed silent while she hugged him before, after a few breaths, giving him a really tight squeeze and pulling back, "you can just say you think of me as family, Grey. No need to be so mysterious," she joked, laughing now. That was really what she needed to hear, she guessed. That she had other people who loved her and wanted her around, unlike Uriah.

The Monsters walk among us Grey didn’t know what to expect, if there was anything to expect in the first place. There were really only two outcomes he could see coming from their conversation; either a further argument in which he’d give in to whatever it was that Rai wanted to put herself through, or they would find some common ground somewhere in the middle of both of their ideas. He tried not to look directly at her as he talked, hoping to avoid seeing her facial reactions to everything he had to say. That was always the tough part, since it looked like he was actually trying to avoid making eye contact. When he finally came to a stop though, and looked back to see what she had to say, if anything, all he say was a nod of her head. Had that really worked? He knew she wouldn’t really give up, and it’s not like he didn’t want her to, just that she needed to understand that her brother didn’t want things fixed. It was blatantly obvious. Then came the unexpected part: Rai hugged him. She had done that before, but this was different. At least it seemed like it was different than any normal hug. Usually those ones came after she hadn’t seen him for a while, like over the summer, and it almost always consisted of Rai either jumping him from behind or running at him at full speed. This time was completely different though, he could tell from the way she approached him. Grey was inclined to take a punch to the face for what he had said, since that seemed to be the thing lately. Instead he got a hug. That meant he had got through to her, right? This was unlike Rai, so he stood still, unsure if he should hug her back or not. It didn’t seem like that kind of hug that needed it, but before he could return it, she squeezed him tighter and then let go. He let his hands fall back to his sides as she said that he could admit he thought of her as family. “You’ve been more family to me than my own has been over the last few years. I know that’s mostly my fault…but you’ve always helped me Rai, and I want to return the favor if you ever need it.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai wasn't amused at the avoiding eye contact thing, but she decided not to comment on it. Yet. Unless it persisted. Rai believed you should face your challenges head on, and that meant making eye contact when disagreeing with your best friend.
Then they were hugging. Well, she was hugging him, and he just stood still. She thought that was pretty amusing, the fact that he was just standing there while her arms were around him. It was short, though.
Rai was only half joking about him admitting she was family, and she wasn't expecting him to actually take the serious route on that one. Her gaze softened and her smile was small as he spoke. She nodded when he finished, but was silent for another moment. Her eyes may have been shining a little bit. "Thanks," her voice came out soft, not like her own, before she spoke again and the volume rose to a normal place, "and you do return it. Daily," she confirmed with a nod before starting to walk again, slowly so he could catch on.

The Monsters walk among us He couldn’t recall the last time Rai had given such a short, straightforward response like that. Things had never really gotten down to this level of, well, he wasn’t sure what to call it, Emotional support? They both knew that the other helped regardless of anything being said, so there was that. Once again, Grey chalked it up to Rai not being her normal self, like he had discovered earlier on. Now that he knew what had been bothering her though, it seemed like whatever he had said worked. The hug had been an indicator of that. He had completely anticipated a headlock, or worse. “That’s what I’m here for.” He returned the smile as they started walking again. Now what would they talk about? They both seemed to get off their chests what had been bugging them lately. He assumed the conversation would go back to how it always did, making small jabs at each other, accompanied with some kind of physical altercation to put the icing on the cake. At the same time though, he didn’t really feel like it was appropriate to go down that road right now. They were both upset about family things and trying to act normal right now wouldn’t be right; it wouldn’t be them. The silence that followed as they walked wasn’t exactly awkward either, it was more, unnatural. Something was always being said or done when he was with Rai. Not being able to take it anymore, Grey finally spoke up, “You never did tell me how the job has been going, other than it being time consuming.” He tried to laugh, hoping to lighten the mood, but it felt forced. And if it felt forced to him, than it would be obvious to Rai. “Catch any students wandering the halls at night? I’ve scared quite a few couples while walking back to the common room. Apparently the facial hair thing helps with pretending to be an auror.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai nodded to confirm that she'd heard his claim that 'that's what he was for'. She was glad to be moving again, and they were getting closer to their destination. Then, he spoke up again after a long silence that wasn't a normal thing for them at all and she turned toward him with thankful eyes. He asked how the job was going, more or less, and he gave a really horribly forced laugh. Luckily, that forced laugh caused Rai to actually laugh. "It's been fun. Yeah, I've caught my share of students in the halls. Impersonating an auror, though? Haven't caught anyone doing that," she mused. "I never noticed how much snogging actually goes on at this school while I was a student here. Teenage hormones are absurd," she rolled her eyes, glancing back at the castle.
She turned back to Grey, "I think more than that, though, is dealing with first and second years messing with advanced spells and getting hurt. The tournament must be making them more reckless," she rolled her eyes and softly chuckled. In reality even she was feeling more reckless this year too, but luckily she was a responsible person. For the most part.

The Monsters walk among us The forced laugh he had made must have been funny enough to get Rai back to her usual self again. He had been anticipating her to try and talk about anything but work, but it finally seemed like she understood that he wanted to get away from the sad, dreary family talk that they both had been going on about. That wasn't like them. They dealt with their own problems and left all of that behind when they were together, other than the occasional check ins about family. Apparently Addi had recently started to become buddy buddy with Rai. He couldn't even remember how he heard about that, but it happened regardless. If he wasn't careful, his sister would go after Finn too. Poach all of his friends from underneath him. He snickered at the comment about the amount of students making out in the halls. It was actually unbelievable once you started adding the numbers up. Again, wandering the halls just before curfew was the best time to spot them, especially if they were couples from different houses. That made it even better when scaring them because they'd scatter in the direction of their perspective common rooms. He felt bad on occasion, but mostly it grossed him out how clingy the other kids his age were. Grey was an old soul stuck in the body of an old man that wanted to sleep all day in a comfy chair. Stalking and hunting down couples in the abandoned hallways of Hogwarts made him feel young again, like he was hunting an exotic animal in the middle of a dense jungle. He could only imagine how fun that would be as a job. Rai might have been disgusted by it, but that was more than intriguing for him. "You seem to forget that you're still a teen, Rai." He stated bluntly. She needed a jab right now, and she even set herself up for it perfectly. "And the tournament is making everyone reckless. Especially the Durmstrang students. I was walking by their boat the other day and I thought they were going to drag me off into the woods and beat me up because I looked at them the wrong way. I feel like they'll do anything to eliminate competition." That wasn't exactly what happened, but close to it. He had borrowed one of the club's cameras and was taking pictures to help ease the workload on some of the members. The Durmstrang students weren't exactly happy campers about that. Trying to see if he could spot the boat from where they were, Grey looked back up at the castle. He probably needed to get back up there to do work or something. Just because he was a 7th year didn't mean he could slack off more, even if he wanted to. "I hate to do this, but I need to get work done. Catch me around if you want to talk again. It really helps. Better than holding it in at least." He said, giving Rai a big smile before heading back off to the castle. [Grey End] MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Rai scoffed as he mentioned that she was still a teen. She didn't feel like one with all this responsibility but... well, Rai was always young at heart. "Doesn't mean I'm going to go around doing that," she joked, scrunching her nose and narrowing her eyes at him a bit. She nodded, agreeing as she spoke about how he was worried the Durm kids would drag him off and beat him up in the woods. "They're pretty tough. Better watch out so you don't get your face scratched up," she joked, but really she had no idea how competitive these people really could be. It was better to be safer than sorry, wasn't it? Rai thought things through, even if she usually ended up choosing the more reckless route in the end.
Then he spoke about how he had to get work done and how talking was better than 'holding it in'. She chuckled, smiling back at him, "hey, same goes for you," she added before they went their separate ways. Maybe talking about real things with Grey wasn't so bad.
