Alice had been talking for a long time about how the length of her hair was annoying her; Lysander knew because she had been listening for a long time. It was a tedious topic for him to discuss, especially because Lorcan kept insisting that long hair was better, and Lysander's own hair was cropped short. Sander was becoming sick of the topic. It always managed to come up, even when the conversation had started on something not even remotely related to hair care. He was sick of the topic, and there was only one way to make sure it never came up again: he was going to make Alice choose. He was holding scissors in his hands and standing just outside of Alice's tent, trying his best not to look like he was preparing to attack her. "Alice!" He called in to her. "Are you ready for a haircut?"

Alice was in her tent, her long blond hair back in a messy bun. She had gotten to the point where she would just lazily tie it up and out of her way so that she wouldn't be bothered at all. And that usually resulted in more frustration for the young witch as she would have to at some point deal with taking it down and brushing out the lion's mane of tangles. For days now she had been toying with the idea of cutting it but she wasn't sure if she was brave enough.
The Hufflepuff alum was writing in her character journal some more about unicorns. She and Lysander had stumbled upon a herd a few days ago and she just kept thinking of more and more to add. She had just finished jotting down a sentence when she heard Lysander call for her just outside her tent. She closed the book and then heard him say the word 'haircut' and she froze. She should have known that at one point he was bound to get tired of her complaining. Alice set down her book and exited the tent to be met with the Ravenclaw. She sat the scissors in his hands and she raised in eyebrow at him. "You're serious?"

When Lysander’s friend exited her tent, the Ravenclaw opened and closed his scissors, a smile on his face. “Of course I’m serious, Alice.” Sander said. He rarely was ever not serious, especially when it came to matters that could potentially affect his magizoology career. Eventually Alice’s complaining was going to start scaring away the animals. “You’ve been talking about a haircut for forever. And you’re always wearing your hair back anyways.” Lysander pointed out. What was the point of long hair if you never wore it down? There was no point, if you asked Sander.
“So, we have two choices here. You can agree to let me cut your hair, or I can Body-Bind you and do it anyways.” Lysander said, smiling. He knew that Alice would never choose the second option, but the threat would hopefully make her realize that she did want to cut her hair. “Don’t worry, I’ve cut Lorcan’s hair before. I’m surprisingly good at it.” He had had to use a little bit of magic to even out the ends when he cut Lorcan’s hair, but Alice didn’t have to know that. All she had to know was that she wasn’t going to end up looking like a four year old had attacked her head with scissors.

Alice's eyes widened at the scissors that Lysander held in his hands. She really could not remember the last time she had had anything more than a trim done to her hair. But Sander was right; her long hair was nothing but a burden to her now. And in her chosen line of work, it was probably best to have shorter hair anyway.
The Hufflepuff alum listened to the ultimatum that the Ravenclaw gave her then let out a small smile. "Okay," she finally said. There was no point in fighting him; he wasn't going to let it go. And honestly, Alice was glad about that. She needed change in her life. "Alright, you win." Alice held her hands up in defeat. With another sigh, Alice reached up and began to undo her hair from the messy bun it was in, revealing a blonde mane that fell around her face. She wasn't going to miss it.

Sander hadn’t expected his confrontation with Alice to be as easy as it was. He almost frowned, but thought the better of it – picking a fight with Alice wasn’t something that he wanted to do. “How short do you want it?” The Ravenclaw asked when the Hufflepuff undid her hair from the bun it had been pulled up into. There was a difference between a haircut and a haircut, and while Lysander was certainly planning to do more than just trim off the dead ends, he didn’t want to go any shorter than Alice was comfortable with. “We need to find someplace for you to sit, too.” Lysander added. He and Alice were about even in height, and he needed more leverage if she wanted a decent quality haircut. There were plenty of tree stumps at the edge of the camp, Sander knew, so once Alice chose her hair length and the pair found an appropriate stump, they would be in business.

Had this moment occured before the end of last school year, Alice likely would have put a fight for much longer with Lysander. Though as it were, Alice was different now. She had found a friend in Lysander, a Ravenclaw; before, she would never have spoken to him based on that fact alone. But since their arrival in the states, she had surprisingly grown quite close to Lysander.
Alice let out a tiny, nervous sigh as she looked around; all while thinking of how short she wanted her hair to be. She spotted some tree stumps on the edge of the camp and headed over as her hands began to brush through the ends of her hair wildly. She bit her lip and took a quick seat on one of the stumps and looked up at Lysander. "Okay," she breathed. "I think... I want it right here." She held her fingers up to just below her chin.

It was relatively easy for the pair of them to find a stump on which for Alice to sit, and Sander watched as Alice began combing fervently through her hair. it was a good thing that Sander had had the foresight to bring her hairbrush, too - it was a pain to have to cut snarled hair, because then when it became untangled, the cut was messy and uneven. Lysander nodded when Alice decided the length she wanted her hair cut to. he would probably start by trying to get it a little longer than that, to give himself enough wiggle room in case he messed up. Sander took up his position behind Alice, carefully straightening her head so the cut wouldn't be lopsided. "Have you ever had short hair before?" Lysander asked casually as he made the first cut. There was no going back now. "Because Lorcan always said that he knew he wouldn't look good with short hair because he had seen it on me." It was a thinly veiled insult that Lysander often had to ignore. He was just curious to know if Alice was sure she would like the way she looked in the end.

Alice made herself absolutely still as Lysander positioned her head where he needed it to be. She was nervous as she bit her bottom lip. But she had to keep reminding herself in her head that change was good. Lysander had been proof of that. Alice had opened herself up to new friends this year, and the result now was a close friendship with a Ravenclaw. Alice almost shook her head 'no' in response but fought the instinct to do so so that she didn't disturb Lysander. "No," she replied, taking in a short breath when she felt the first cut. She closed her eyes.
The Hufflepuff alum let out a breath like a laugh, though it may have come off slightly forced because of her nerves. "Heh, makes me wish I had a twin..." she tried to ignore the feeling of the scissors blades cutting through her blonde hairs. As nerve-wracking as it was, it was also oddly satisfying.

Lysander nodded when Alice said that she hadn’t ever cut her hair short before, and then, realizing she couldn’t see directly behind her, made a soft noise to show he had heard. “I think it will look good on you.” He told her as he continued to cut a careful line across the locks of her hair. “You have one of those faces, you know?” There were some people who just looked positively odd with their hair cut short, because it highlighted a strange facial feature like a wide forehead or too-square jaw. Alice, though, had no such feature; Lysander liked her face, in a totally platonic way.
Sander let out a soft snort when Alice said she wished she had a twin. “Trust me, you’re better off without one.” He told her, pausing a moment in his cutting to examine his progress so far. It was surprisingly good, given how long it had been since he had last had to trim Lorcan’s hair. There was a little bit of evening up to do, but not much, and much of Alice’s blonde hair was spread around the tree stump like a bizarre halo. “Too bad you weren’t born a Metamorphmagus.” He lamented. They could try out whatever style they liked without worry – if it looked bad, they could just change it back.

Alice could feel a weight literally lift from her shoulders as Lysander cut across her locks. As he did so, she bit her lip. She was deservedly nervous, wondering how she was going to look when this was all said and done. When Lysander shared his thoughts on how it would look good, she smiled. "Thanks," she said, still feeling all the nervousness. "I hope so."
The Hufflepuff alum let out a little breath through her nostrils in place of a laugh (so that she didn't move,) when Lysander let out a snort. "Yeah. I suppose having two younger brothers so close in age is bad enough, huh?" She joked, smiling at the thought of her brothers. Alice rolled her eyes playfully. "I would be a lousy Metamorphmagus. I like to pick one look and stick to it. Hence why I've never changed my hair before this," she said a bit sheepishly.

Sander smiled a bit at Alice’s thanks. “You’re welcome.” She deserved to be confident about how this would turn out, Sander thought, and if something as inarticulate as his comment had helped her, he was glad. “It will look wonderful, Alice.” He reiterated. Lysander began to make a few smaller cuts, smoothing out the uneven bits of her hair. It actually didn’t take as long as he had originally anticipated, but Lysander checked his work again when he spoke to Alice, determined to make her look as good as he possibly could. “Your brothers are alright, for Gryffindors.” Phil was in Sander’s year, though he hadn’t had any sort of friendship with the middle Longbottom due to his distaste for the people that had ruined Lorcan.
“Done.” Sander said, stepping away from Alice and letting his hand with the scissors fall to his side. “Now’s when you regret saying you would be a lousy Metamorphmagus.” The Ravenclaw joked weakly, far from the confident artist he had been a few moments ago. He just hoped Alice liked what she saw.

Alice sat in silence as Lysander continued to tell her how good he believed it would look. He could shower her in all the compliment in the world, but she was still over the hill nervous. You could always cut hair but it took forever to grow back and what if she was absolutely horrified by how she looked? She tried to continued to distract herself with conversation as Lysander finished up. Her brothers were a good distraction topic. "Yeah, I suppose they're okay," she smiled. Her brothers were more than okay. In fact, they were the two people she had always sworn to be there for no matter what, since day one. She would do anything for them. And even the thought of Jayden and Philip was enough to put a smile on her face.
When Lysander stepped away, Alice sort of shook her hair out a bit to get rid of any loose hairs. After that, she slowly shook her head from side to side as she felt the lighter weight of her hair move with her. Truthfully, she didn't even have to look in a mirror to know that she already liked it. "It feels... amazing," she said with a wide smile. "I... I haven't had hair this short in years." She played with the ends of her new length a bit and couldn't get the grin off of her face.

Lysander was finally beginning to catch on to the fact that Alice needed distraction more than reassurance when it came to the haircut, and he tried to continue the conversation in a direction that didn’t involve him willingly complimenting Gryffindors. “Do you ever wish you had a sister?” Lysander mused. He had never wanted for another sibling when he was younger and he had been close with Lorcan, but he could see it being fairly lonely to be the oldest child when both of your younger siblings were of the opposite gender. People often said they wished to know what it was like to have a twin, but Lysander and Alice had already somewhat covered that topic of conversation.
Alice shook her head when he was done cutting, and Lysander laughed when he saw a few wisps of blond float away. Alice’s shaking was slightly less violent a second time, and Sander blinked, slightly confused until his friend spoke, saying that it felt amazing to have less hair. “That’s why I never grew my hair out.” Sander told her with a smile. “It feels so much nicer when there’s less of it.” Sander gestured for Alice to stand up. “Let’s go find a puddle or something.” He told her. Once Alice saw the cut for real, the transformation would be complete.

Alice was thankful for the subject change when it came and she smiled. It was a topic that required a moment of thinking, however. Alice bit her bottom lip slightly as she thought. "I don't know," she finally decided. "I guess before Phil and Jayden were older, I did. Like, when I was really young. But as I got older, I think I didn't really care. I had Abby Shacklebolt. We were pretty close, since she was good friends with James." She felt a little annoyed that she had said James's name. "Plus... I don't know if you know this, but... my parents kind of adopted Natalia and Andromeda Lestrange. So, I guess I've got two sisters now. Kinda." She shrugged.
The Hufflepuff alum felt brand new with the short cut. It was like getting a fresh start, especially after all of the bad things that had happened last year. "I think it'll definitely be hard going back to long hair willingly," she chuckled lightly. She got up when Lysander gestured for her to do so and she followed him in their search for a puddle. As they did so, Alice looked up at him. "So, any word yet from RJ?" She asked, remembering that a few days ago he had mentioned he had been awaiting an owl from the half giant.

Lysander’s mouth rounded into an o shape when Alice said that her parents had adopted two of the Lestrange children. He had heard rumors of that, of course, but he had assumed they were just that – rumors. His mother had long since taught him that if he had nothing nice to say, he ought to say nothing at all, so he decided to keep quiet on the matter and avoid accidentally offending Alice.
“Is someone going to make you grow out your hair against your will?” Lysander asked. That seemed silly to him, and he couldn’t imagine a scenario wherein Alice’s work as a magizoologist would demand longer hair. “No, no word yet.” Sander said, shaking his head when Alice inquired about RJ. “He said he was going to visit his mother, though, so I assume that he’s been busy doing things with her.” It didn’t particularly bother him – family was important, especially since RJ’s mother presumably lived in France, and he hadn’t seen her while in school. Summer wasn’t just a time for friends – it was a time for family, too. Of the two options, Lysander was definitely beginning to consider Alice more of his family than his friend. Besides, it felt like less of a betrayal to Susan if he thought of Alice as family, otherwise her spot as best friend would be usurped. Sander spotted a puddle in a dip in the ground, and gestured towards it so Alice could see herself.
