Coriander packed her bag of books and headed to the library for a good quiet study session. She approached the corner she usually sat in and took a step back. There were two people snogging in the bean bag chair there. Cori sighed angrily and headed out of the area, trying to find somewhere else to sit. It was a busy day in the library, which didn't make Cori happy. She would rather have found a quiet place to sit by herself, away from all the people so she could relax a little.
Finally, she found and empty seat near the third of fourth row in the main hall of the library. She could see most of the people in the library from her spot, but at least the table was empty for now. She set her bag down on the chair next to her and pulled out her Ancient Runes book first. She began looking over some translation worksheets and got to work. Soon she had been working for longer than twenty minutes, and she took a break to look up and asses the room.
That was a bad idea. The blonde hair, the confident walk, the yellow tie. Cori almost groaned out loud. She lifted her book high above her head, hoping it would shield herself from Alices vision. She prayed secretly that the Huffle wouldn't notice her. That girl was almost colder than Cori was.

If there was one class Alice hated studying for, it was Potions. She had her first class coming up and she knew the first thing they would be doing was sixth year review. Alice did... alright on her O.W.L.s, at least enough to get into the N.E.W.T.s course, much to her dismay. Alice was already kind of freaking out about the new assignments, projects, and essays that they would be doing. It was a new teacher so she had no idea what to expect, so she figured what better way to be prepared than to head down to the library and get a head start in some catch up studying?
The library was an alright place. It wasn't always Alice's first place of choice to hang out mainly because one could always find at least one Ravenclaw in the library at all times. It was kind of an unspoken rule that aside from their own common room, the library was the place for Ravenclaws. Alice disliked all Ravenclaws. With a passion. Of course, she would never admit that it was because she was jealous of them. Alice grew up hearing so much about Hogwarts because she came from a very well-known pureblood family. Her family had always told her "oh, Ravenclaw is the house for you, Alice, dear," or "no doubt you'll be sorted into Ravenclaw, Alice". And then, the night of the Sorting Ceremony, the eldest Longbottom had been severely let down by being sorted into Hufflepuff. Of course, she came to not mind this. Her mother was a Hufflepuff, so she didn't mind the house so much. Instead, she just developed a personal vendetta against all ravens.
Alice entered the library to see that it was not only occupied by Ravenclaws, but students from the other houses as well. This was a little more comforting. However, it was also very crowded and there were hardly any places to sit down and actually have a good study session. Alice sighed, heading to the Potions section of the library. She figured she would gather her books first. Slowly, Alice walked down the aisle, scanning the book titles. As she went, she picked out a book on Golpalott's Third Law, as she couldn't remember what that was for the life of her, and a book about various potions that she recognized from last year's curriculum. With the two large books, in hand, the Hufflepuff exited the aisle and put her books down at the least full table she could find.
This table had only one other person occupying it. All the other tables had at least three or four, and that was more people than Alice was willing to deal with. This person, however, was holding the book above her head, so Alice could not see who it was. The Hufflepuff raised her eyebrows and made a disgruntled face. "What's her problem?" Alice thought as she sat down. Alice mentally shrugged it off and opened the book on Golpalott's Third Law. She began reading a bit, but then glanced up briefly at the person across from her. Almost instinctively, Alice's eyes snapped back down to the pages in front of her. That was no stranger sitting across from her.
Alice had just unintentionally sat down across from her worst enemy: Coriander Pepsi.

She sat down. Cori cursed about a thousand times in her head. She could see why this was the most appealing table to sit at, the library was absurdly crowded. Cori sighed and lowered her book, just in time for Alice to see her face and look back down at her own. Cori sighed and set her book down on the table. Should she say something? She really needed to focus.
This probably would just end in a fight, like it always did. Ugh, Cori thought. The last thing she needed was to deal with that... that... Alice. Cori took another deep breath and shook her head, giving up, "Guess God doesn't answer prayers anymore, huh?" Cori said coldly. It was exactly what Cori was thinking, and there was nothing wrong with lying to Alice. Cori had prayed that she wouldn't come near her, but the girl did anyway, so didn't that mean God wasn't listening?
"It's probably because I'm not that religious," Cori closed her book, "Guess I really screwed up there." The contempt in her voice was clear, and she was sure Alice would sound just as bad when she starting talking. If she started talking. Why did Cori start talking? Oh yeah, because there was no way she could focus unless she got the introductions, insults and irritation out of the way. Who was she kidding, the irritation would never go away. Sometimes Cori just wanted to reach her hand out and listen to Alice scream at the cold. She shook her head, literally. That thought was really dark. Yikes, Alice always brought out the worst in her.

Perhaps it was because the girl was in Ravenclaw. Or maybe it was because she thought she was better than everyone else, or so it seemed to Alice. Or... maybe it was because Coriander Pepsi was just as rude to everyone else as Alice was. Alice and Coriander had never gotten along. Since the first day they met. Alice had been rude off the bat because of Coriander's being in Ravenclaw house, so initially Alice had been jealous of her. But then that jealousy developed into a strong dislike when she realized that Coriander was just as cold as she was. She had actively avoided Pepsi whenever she could, so the fact that Alice had just accidentally sat down with her was very unfortunate.
Alice rolled her eyes when Coriander spoke. There was something about her voice, her tone, that just really got to Alice. It made her grit her teeth and purse her lips together tightly in anger. "I don't think that's the only place you screwed up," Alice muttered, but she made sure to speak loud enough for Coriander to hear her. Alice wasn't one to make scenes, especially fights. However, when forced to have to deal with Coriander, a part of her wanted to really just pull her hair out. For a brief moment, Alice imagine herself jumping over the table and knocking Coriander out of her chair, maybe hitting her with a good jinx or two. But Alice knew better than to do that. One could see that Coriander brought out the worst in her, as well.

Alice was a special soul, cold and ruthless as Cori was but without the curse as an excuse. Cori always wondered what her deal was, but there was no way she would ask. There was no way she would even want to look like she actually had an interest in Alices life. That would just look like she actually cared about Alice, and Cori only cared about very few people. Alice Longbottom was near the bottom of the list, right between Blast-ended Skrewts and her MIA parents. That was about as low as you could get in Coris book without being an actual murderer.
Alice pursed her lips, big shocker there, the girl always looked like there was a bad taste in her mouth. Maybe she had some kind of problem with bad breath. Cori almost laughed at the thought, but she wasn't quite ready to lighten the mood just yet. Not that the mood between these two could ever really be lightened. Alice's ''muttered' comment was impressive. That was one thing Cori could give her, she definitely knew how to have a proper cat fight-words only. That was the thing about the relationship these two had, the words were full of venom and were often well thought out. They also did very well at sparring in the moment. Cori sighed and smiled, "you're right there. I made the mistake of not turning you into an ice cube years ago." Of course, Cori wouldn't actually be able to turn someone into an ice cube just by touch, but she could probably give them a good dose of frost bite.
For a moment Cori almost suggested that they work on schoolwork together. They had the same ideals, the same goals when it came to classwork. As far as Cori knew, they both wanted to pass. But Cori wasn't ready to suggest that. Not yet. Maybe not ever. @alice

Alice's eyes narrowed at the Ravenclaw. Alice and Coriander were alike in so many ways, it was odd that they weren't friends. But then again, it was perfect that they were enemies. Alice had so badly wanted to be in Ravenclaw when she was younger, and Coriander was sorted into Ravenclaw. The two girls also preferred solitude rather than the company of others. Plus the two were no strangers to catfights, particularly with one another. They both were good at making one another feel less than good about themselves when it came to insults and words. Both girls were very intelligent indeed.
If there was one thing Alice would never admit to being jealous about, it was about Coriander's beauty. She was a very pretty girl and Alice felt silently intimidated by it. Alice would never admit that to a soul, but it was a reason that she didn't like Coriander. And as shallow as that was, Alice felt validated in her dislike for Coriander because of it.
As Coriander put on an indubitaly sarcastic smile, Alice did the same, but it turned into more of a wicked smirk at the thought that enterered her head. "I made the mistake of not turning you into an ice cube years ago." Alice shook her head sarcastically. She had heard rumors about Coriander Pepsi. Rumors that Coriander was freezing cold to the touch. Alice was very good at eavsdropping, and over the years had heard many students talk about Coriander. "I brushed by her and accidentally touched her and my hand turned freezing cold," or even "I swear, that girl is ice cold and I don't mean her soul!" Alice had never gotten close enough to touch Coriander. Besides, why would she want to? Alice practically hated the girl.
Alice cocked her head to the side and blinked at Coriander innocently. "But haven't you heard, Cori?" Alice never used Coriander's first name. It was a much too personable and friendly of a gesture for Alice. "I'm just as cold as you are," she hissed venomously. Now, Alice did not know whether or not the rumors of Coriander being "ice cold to the touch" were true, but she figured she would learn if they were or not based on Coriander's response to Alice's venomous words.

Cori almost wanted to take back what she had said about the ice cube, make up some excuse about a spell or something. But there wasn't really any point. Plus, if Cori went the other route and confirmed the whispers about her cold skin, Alice would be the first person to make sure everyone knew. Truthfully, Cori didn't really see Alice as a gossip, but she did tell her friends everything and that would spread. Cori didn't hate her for that though, for her loyalty to her friends. Granted, that loyalty sometimes looked like possession, like Alice wasn't willing to share her toys. Cori silently laughed in her head picturing Alice in a cliche little sandbox, yelling at everyone not to touch the toys that surrounded her even though she didn't play with a single one.
That was sort of how Cori felt about her toys, to be honest. She liked to keep her friends close and keep her enemies as far away as possible. Screw keeping your enemies closer, it's much easier just to avoid them as much as possible. As the wicked smirk played across Coris face, Cori guess what Alice might be thinking. The people who had made the mistake of coming close to her when she foolishly wore short sleeves or no gloves. The people who didn't look where they were going and didn't know how to give people personal space. Cori wasn't going to pretend she didn't hear all of the true rumors about her spreading throughout the school. What could she do to stop them? Better to perpetuate them by acting just as cold as she felt.
Alice's innocent little act made Cori clench her fists under the table. Especially since Alice had used her first name, that made Cori twitch a little with anger. She took a deep breath and shook her head, letting her own smirk play on her face and her eyes narrow just a little, "Oh, I don't know about that. Ali-Cat," Cori snickered a little at her own nickname for Alice. Now, Cori wasn't sure if Alice was digging for some sort of confession or really just trying to out cold her. Nevertheless, Cori shrugged and sighed, acting as if she were bored. She slipped off her right glove, taking her time with one finger each moving very slowly, and reached her hand toward the Huffle.
"Go ahead, take it," she dared. The ramifications may not be worth it, but seeing Alice's reaction had potential.

Thinking about it, Alice figured it would make sense if Coriander's skin really was ice cold. It would match her icy personality. But Alice couldn't help but think how... impossible it was. To be born with ice cold skin? To live with ice cold skin? It all seemed very unlikely to Alice. However, Alice had no idea about what curses could do what, and she didn't even consider a curse a possibility. For now, she just went on the side of doubting Coriander's much talked about skin temperature. Alice was never one to follow gossip anyway.
Alice could have sworn she saw Coriander tense a little bit at her words. Alice's smirk widened at this. She loved getting Coriander's blood boiling, but then the same could be said for Coriander to Alice. "Oh, I don't know about that Ali-Cat." What did she just say? Alice's smirk disappeared and her eyes narrowed at the Ravenclaw. But when Coriander slipped off one of her gloves, Alice's eyes widened only slightly as she looked down at Coriander's hand. She had never seen Coriander without her gloves before. And the fact that she had taken one off seemed odd to Alice.
"Go ahead, take it."
Alice's eyes went from her hand, to Coriander's eyes, then back to her hand. A part of the Hufflepuff really wanted to reach out and touch a finger to Coriander's palm, just to see if the rumors were true. If they weren't, Alice would get to laugh in her face. But then again... she didn't want to give Coriander that sort of satisfaction if they were indeed true. After a few short, silent moments of deliberation, Alice folded her arms across her chest and just stared back at Coriander, meeting her eyes and not saying anything as she simply just raised an eyebrow.

Cori watched as Alice looked from her hand, to her face, and back again. She couldn't say she was surprised when Alice leaned back, arms folded and eyebrow raised. Cori smirked, guess Alice was a coward after all. Cori pulled her hand back, but didn't put her glove back on, she simply played with it between her fingers, letting the silence linger for a few moments longer. She could sit here all day, starting down with Alice. And they probably would have if the loud noise a few shelves over hadn't occurred. Cori snapped her neck over to see a first year, covered in books, who seemed to have fallen off a ladder. Tess, the librarian, quickly made her was over there and began helping the boy, smiling as she did so.
Cori frowned, poor kid was probably trying to use the Accio curse and really screwed up, taking the whole top shelf with him. Cori remembered where she was sitting, who she was with, and what was just happening and turned back towards Alice, but looked down at her revealed pale, white hand first. Her skin rarely saw sunlight, considering the layers she covered herself with. She was almost embarrassed, but she couldn't show that in front of Alice. She looked back up into the Huffles face and replaced the smile, "Well, Longbottom, looks like we're at a stale mate," she sighed, " maybe should we call it a day?" Cori mused. She knew this wasn't over, not by a long shot. Eventually, maybe not today, Alice's curiosity would overcome her and she'd take Coris offer to touch her hand, confirming the rumors.
Cori was a little relieved that she hadn't, actually, because it meant her secret was safe for at least a few more moments longer, if not days. She worried, however, that the once the Huffle did confirm the truth, Cori would have nothing to hold over her head. No matter, she'd find some way to try and one up the girl.

Alice kept her poker face straight as she watched Coriander, searching her face for any sign of dishonesty or trickery. Unfortunately, Coriander wasn't the easiest person to read. Alice was usually fairly good at reading the expressions on others faces, but Coriander had always been more difficult. She let her eyes fall from Coriander's face to her hand, as she toyed with her glove between her fingers. Alice's eyes narrowed and her lips pressed together maliciously. Even the smallest smirk from Coriander set angry chills through Alice's spine, but the chills were interrupted as some poor first year fell off of a ladder while the top shelf followed after him.
It was a pitiful sight, but Alice was not about to forget about the topic at hand. She stayed still, her arms still crossed in front of her but she let her head tilt to the side as she tilted her nose slightly up into the air. "Or," Alice replied with a smirk of her own this time. "We just stop beating around the bush already," Alice leaned forward into the table, leaning her elbows on the surface to be closer to Coriander. "And you just tell me if you're really as cold as they say you are." Her voice was quiet, but still laced with venom.
It was very unlikely that Coriander would just come out and tell Alice, after all Coriander seemed to dislike Alice as much as she disliked Coriander. But it was still worth a try, and it was also still a little fun to harass Coriander like that.

My picture is broken! Alice always had a way of turning her nose up in the air even higher than a second before. If she kept at it, she would soon be looking at the ceiling and that wouldn't do anybody any good. Cori relished in how stupid she would look if she did so, though she did look pretty ridiculous now, as well.
When Alice leaned forward, Cori wasn't expecting it. She just came out and asked, didn't she? Cori contemplated for a moment, was it worth it to just tell the truth and not get the chance to see the Huffles reaction to the cold? Cori kept her arms folded and leaned back in her chair, lifting on hand to tap her index finger on her chin, a clear sign that she was busy thinking. She also made sure her face was as animated and ridiculous as possible, as if she was mocking Alice and only pretending to think about her request.
After a few moments, Cori sighed softly, with a little high pitched tone laced through it. "But if I told you, wouldn't that make the rumors less fun?" she said, her voice sticky and sweet like syrup. No, there as no way she was going to tell Alice her secret. Not now. Not today. Alice would just have to find out for herself if she ever wanted to know the truth. Cori bit on her lip a little, contemplating what best to say next.
"How about when your all done hiding out in the bushes like a coward, you just let me know?" she decided on saying.

At Coriander's reponse, Alice could just feel her blood running through her, hot as could be in anger. She just couldn't stand Coriander. Everything about the dark haired Ravenclaw rubbed Alice the wrong way and she could never see herself truly getting along or making amends with the girl. It wasn't just because she was "cold," whatever that meant. It was because Coriander was so like Alice in many different ways that there was a little part of Alice that felt threatened. She couldn't even bear the thought of someone being like her in any way possible.
Alice's facial expressions hardened. Her lips pressed together in a tight, frustrated line and her eyebrows furrowed in anger. Her eyes were narrowed, looking directly at Coriander. Alice was no coward, and if it took finding out just how cold Coriander really was, then so be it. Alice would prove that stupid little Ravenclaw wrong. Alice held out her hand, her palm facing downard.
"Do it," she said, firmly. "Touch my hand, I'm not scared," her eyebrows raised at Coriander, challenging her. So what if Coriander really was freezing cold? Alice liked the cold better than warmth anyway. Fall and winter were her favorite seasons so what was a little ice going to be? "That way we can make those rumors even more fun," she hissed, a smirk on her face. Alice could take it. Or at least she kept telling herself she could.

As Alice's facial expression hardened, so did Coris bloodstream. Was Alice really considering letting Cori touch her? Did Cori want to? The thought of keeping the secret from Alice, letting is fester, pleased Cori. But the thought of not doing it, wasn't probable. As nice as it would be to let her secret stay a secret from Alice, it would be worse to let Alice think Cori was bluffing. If Alice made the offer for Cori to touch her, Cori had to take it. If Alice decided to call it a day, Cori would accept that as well. The anticipation of what Alice would do next was making Coris blood run even colder than usual, and her hands almost started shaking.
Finally, Alice spoke, and Coris heart almost stopped. She really wanted her to do it. Cori had to give Alice one thing, she wasn't a coward. Cori had always respected Alice to an extent for certain things, but this was the first time the girls bravery, or stubbornness, really stuck out to her. Cori took a deep breath, a look of worry crossing her face for a short moment before she smiled. "All right, Longbottom," Cori said, leaning forward. "But try not to scream," she whispered. She honestly didn't know if Alice would react verbally, she hoped she wouldn't. She reached her un-gloved hand forward.
She started by placing just her index finger on the back of Alices hand before wrapping her other fingers around her hand quickly. If anyone else was watching, they would think these girls were very unusual. Cori prepared herself for whatever came next.

Coriander surprised Alice, she had to admit. A part of Alice really didn't believe Coriander, even as she leaned her ungloved hand forward to touch Alice. For a moment, Alice thought about what would happen if Coriander wasn't as cold as everyone said. Alice would have bragging rights that was for sure. But if she was? Alice wasn't sure what she was going to do.
Alice felt herself take in a deep breath through her nose and Coriander slowly reached her fingers around Alice's hand. Coriander's hand quickly wrapped around Alice's hand and as fast as it had began, it was over.
Coriander was cold.
A look of shocked surprise registered only briefly on Alice's face as she looked urgently from Coriander's hand to her own, which she now was holding in her other palm. Alice realized then that she didn't want Coriander to see any sort of emotion in her face so Alice quickly regained her composure and even straigtened herself in her chair. She raised her eyebrows at Coriander as if she was hardly impressed. "Feels to me like you just have low blood pressure or something," she shook her head at the girl and shrugged.
The Hufflepuff was lying, of course. Coriander's hand was freezing, and Alice was sure that if she had let Coriander hold onto her a moment longer she would have gotten frost bite or something. But how was such a thing possible? How could a human being, even if it was Coriander Pepsi, be so cold? Alice looked at the hand that Coriander had touched. She glanced up at Coriander briefly, then back at her hand. It had definitely been an odd feeling, but Alice almost felt like what had just happened really hadn't. Like a dream, or something. It felt unreal.

Cori was examining Alice so closely that she caught the brief look of shock on Alices face. That was good enough for her. Though, a good scream would have been nice. Cori almost willed the cold to spread, wanting to freeze Alices whole arm. But it wasn't like that. It was just a curse on her skin, not even useful. As Alice pulled her hand away to relax it into her other palm, Cori couldn't help but notice the whitened skin and the blue veins in Longbottoms hand became more visible from the cold. As Alice straightened her back, apparently nonchalant, Cori couldn't help but feel a little disappointed, but not at all shocked. There was no way Alice would show what she was really feeling in that moment, nor would she admit how cold Cori really was.
May as well let it all hang out," Cori thought. "Or maybe you're just immune because you're blood his hotter than most peoples." Cori sat up straight and replaced her glove, relieved to have the comfort of the familiar fabric again. Cori sighed and shrugged, "I know you're bluffing Alice. Because, and this is the truth, my cold skin is a curse. A curse that anyone would be able to notice, no matter how much their blood was boiling." Cori tried to don and uninterested and bored tone, but truthfully she was panicking slightly because she had just told Alice the real story.
What would happen next? She would go blabbing to James Potter no doubt, one more reason for her to get him alone in a corner and try to snog him. Because she had some little secret that was "oh, so thrilling" to hear. Well, good. Cori was glad that Alice could use her secret to make a fool of herself.
