Alice confessed she was more afraid that they might end up going through the things their parents did. War, and such. Carcer wondered how much she actually knew about what had happened. Alice was sharp, but she clearly didn’t like thinking about this subject. Carcer, on the other hand, had given it a lot of thought. Not about the few things his father had said (and even that was slim information at best), but the things that weren’t. The details of the Death Eater occupation of Hogwarts for the school year leading up to that last battle were very generalized, with little concrete information beyond names. That made Carcer wonder what had gone on in the hallways and classrooms that year. You could find people here and there willing to talk about the battle itself, but nobody wanted to discuss the Carrows. That was a very loud silence. But Carcer set that aside and looked at Alice, smiling.
“Dad once told me that the people who wish most to avoid war are those who are most capable at it. That they understand what they could lose, so they will try their best to head it off, but if it comes anyway, they become demons and fight twice as hard, because of what they could lose. I don’t know if fear is the right word for what I feel about the idea of war, but…well, I’d just as soon avoid it too.” The Sorting Hat had been right when it couldn’t decide where to put Carcer: he had the heart of a lion and the soul of a badger.
He knew the mention of crups and kneazles would get the blonde’s attention. Alice had a thing for cats already, and kneazles were essentially evil-detecting cats, while crups were magic-detecting dogs. He had been rather surprised to learn that Alice wasn’t a member of the Magical Creatures Club when he first joined. It seemed like the club was the exception to her love of animals overriding her dislike for groups. Looked like the prospect of kneazles was overriding everything else though, considering her tentative question to him. Carcer grinned. “It’s never too late to join. Or I could sneak you in under my robes if you like. But joining would probably be easier. I’ll grab a form for you tomorrow if you want.”
