@braelynn shifting the pillow under his head ranger sighed slightly and glanced at the clock beside his bed. he and drew had spent the last day setting things up in his room. it had been a pile of boxes when he had come home and his bed and now it was only a few boxes. he had been tossing and turning since he had gone to bed last night. even with potions to help him sleep it wasn't going all that well. he had a feeling they were about to resort to knocking him out fully. he rubbed his fingers in his eyes as he stared at the ceiling before resting his hands on his chest. he had the apartment to himself today, emily was working and drew had been called out and it was quiet. he wasn't used to quiet anymore. when they had lived at home it had always been noisy, there was always something happening with one brother or another and now it was just silence. turning onto his side he rested his hands under his head and stared at the wall, finally starting to feel like he could drift off to sleep.

Ranger was at Andrew's for a few days. Braelynn had been concerns about him for a while now, ever since seeing him at the concert. He just.... He didn't look good, and it was almost as if she could feel all the negative emotions. And she could help but feel at least a small connection to him, because she knew what it was like to sink that low. She'd been there too. Still was sometimes, and Zander had been, and still was, her saving grace. Now, Ranger needed someone there for him. She couldn't be there as a sister-in-law, though. But she could still be there.
It hasn't been hard to convince Zander to drop her off at Andrew's that day. Both Andrew and Emily had to work, and Zander had a meeting at a recording studio. Either she stayed home alone, or she went to Andrew's as a fox and kept an eye on him. Made sure he didn't pass out again. Obviously he opted to have her spend the day with Ranger.
What she hadn't considered was the dog.
Zander had already left, just stopping by long enough to let her in, when she heard Jinx. She'd completely forgotten about Ranger's dog. A giant black dog that, compared to her current size, was monsterous and terrifying. That was when she realized today would be tougher then she'd thought. She went running, the dog right on her tail, almost literally, and tried desperate to find a place to hide. In the mad chase through the living room Jinx knocked over a lamp, but it didn't deter the giant dog. It did give Bay enough time to wiggle under the couch though. A moment later and a giant wet nose followed her under the couch, forcing her to retreat even farther under. Stupid dog! Where was Ranger to grab his pet?

@braelynn ranger's eyes flew open when he heard the smashing of something out in the main part of the apartment. he leapt off the bed and grabbed his wand from his jacket pocket, he had thrown it over the single chair in his room and he wrenched the door open, wand held out straight. wait. why wasn't jinx barking. if someone was breaking in the dog would bark, he had always been a good guard dog. ranger willed himself to calm down and he took a breath as he moved further into the light of the room and he frowned when he saw jinx with his nose pressed under the couch, his tail wagging like it was about to fall off and the most pitiful of whines coming from his mouth. "jinx?" ranger spoke to the dog as he moved across the floor in his bare feet to pull the dog back gently. though in the end it wasn't very gentle, he had to wrap his arms around the middle of his large dog and pull him back carefully. he grabbed his collar to stop him rushing back under the couch. "no .. settle down" he said as he moved to tug him into the kitchen to close him in there while he worked out what he was getting at. it took a moment to wrangle his happy dog into the room and when he finally got the door closed he sagged against it for a second. how had that made him tired .. he shook the feeling off and walked over to the couch, took a knee and leaned down to look under the couch, lowering his wand and casting a lumos spell to light up the dark area. his eyes widened when he came face to face with the little fox that made all the horrible noises. "lynn?" he asked. oh! zander had been bringing his fox over. drew had told him before he'd left but ranger hadn't really taken much notice at the time. if he had of he'd have kept jinx in his room with him.

Well, talk about a wake up call! Being chased around by a dog many times your own size was absolutely positively terrifying! Her little heart was beating frantically, and she'd be startled so witless my that she couldn't even muster a sound. She sound be using those powerful fox lungs to try and get ranger's attention. There was no doubt he'd hear her after all! But yet, she couldn't. She was to busy trying to remember how to breath, let alone cry out. So, she just cowered behind the couch, curled up in the tightest ball possible, her eyes terrifying large and never looking away from that giant nose trying to get under he couch.
And then, it was gone. She heard Ranger's voice, calling the dog's name. If she'd been human she would have sighed in relief. Thank goodness. She could see his feet from under the couch, dragging to dog away. A few minutes later and he was back, kneeling down beside the couch and peering under. She hadn't moved, not daring to in case the dog got free. But as he spotted and recognized her, at least fox her, she let out that soft sad cooing sound, finally mustering up some sort of noise. Slowly she began crawling out from her the couch, her eyes still wide as saucer. Only when she was at the edge of the couch did she stop, those large eyes tearing away from Ranger and scanning the room, looking to make sure the dog was no where to be found. Once satisfied that Jinx wasn't going to scare the living daylight out of her again she she finish crawling out from under the couch. She didn't stay out in the open though, slight paranoia setting in. Instead, she pressed her little body up against his leg, heart this racing, breathing quick and frantic, and whole body trembling from the scare.

@braelynn "that's it" he said to the fox as it slowly started making it's way out from under the couch. he didn't blame the animal. his heart was still racing a mile a minute and he knew what was happening now. he didn't think jinx would have actually hurt her, but he would have tried to play with her and that would have ended badly. he glanced to the kitchen door where he could hear the dog scratching at the gap beneath the wood and he sighed a little. he looked back as the sand coloured fox peered out and around the room, obviously looking for the horrible creature that had attacked it. "he's a softie, i promise" ranger said as the animal scurried across the wooden floor to press against his leg. he could feel it's heart racing and he chewed his lip. "i know the feeling. he scared the life out of me too" he said as he shifted to scoop one hand under the fox and the other around her middle so he could lift her as he stood up. he walked back toward his room, the horrible urge to lay down washing over him again. he hated that feeling, he didn't like laying in bed. he liked being up and doing things, but he was just so damn tired. he tucked lynn close to his chest and shifted her so he could use one hand to wave his wand at the kitchen door to let jinx out. though he closed the door to his room so the two animals couldn't tear the house apart again should they decide to do that again. he moved to the bed and sat down on it, setting lynn down on the top of the covers before taking the time to climb back into bed and tuck his pillow under his chin. he watched the fox for a moment and wondered why zander had called it lynn. probably out of bay's memory but still. the thought seemed odd to him. but who was he to judge. he yawned and pressed his hand to his mouth and looked at lynn again when he finished. "you're house trained .. right?" he asked. then he almost tapped his head. well she couldn't answer so he was just going to hope she was. he turned onto his back and rested his hand behind his head and looked at the roof again. without thinking he reached out to touch lynn's fur, his fingers running over it lightly. "i envy you, you know .. i wish i could trade places. it must be easier to be an animal .."

After spending so much of her time as a fox Braelynn had realized something. And that was... that she actually liked being carried. It was a strange, but almost comforting feeling having someone pick her up when she was so small. Maybe it was because she could actually get a 'normal' look at her surrounds, from her former height, or close to it. Or maybe it was the fact that she was usually out of reach from anything that could pose a problem like children or other animals. Either way, she stopped shaking when Ranger scooped her up and held her close to his chest as he stood. Her hear was still racing, of course, but that would eventually calm down.
He didn't hold her long, setting her on his bed before laying down as well. Thankfully he'd closed the door so she wasn't worried about Jinx charging in to try and play with her again... Unlike the last time he'd set her down, she was silent. But, to be honest last time he'd startled her when he tried to move her, this time she'd been expecting it. She sat on his bed, her head turning this way and that as she took it in, those large ears of hers rotating just as much as her head. When he spoke her head and ears turns to him, those large eyes of hers fixed on him. He'd asked her if she was house trained. Almost immediately she let out a huff, as if voicing her displeasure that he dared think she wasn't. She might not be able to talk, but she could still make noises, and sometimes people could understand. She might be pretending to be an animal, but that didn't mean she lost all her manners!
Though, that disgruntled look passed the moment he reached out to pet her. She leaned into his touch immediately, standing up on all four paws so she could push against his hand and try and encourage him to pet her more. One, because it felt amazing. And two because Ranger needed to feel like she was there. That she might not be 'human', but that he wasn't alone. She was specifically here to try and help him through this dark haze he was in.

@braelynn he smiled when the fox huffed at his question about her being house trained. though he thought it was a little odd, the timing of it. it was almost like she could understand him but that would be almost impossible. though not really all that far fetched, he'd long been a believed that jinx knew exactly what he was talking about when he was talking to the big black dog. he kept rubbing his hand over her fur, getting deeper and deeper into his thoughts as he did, the rhythmic movement of his hand helping him not focus on anything else. he looked at the wall across from his bed and he had a sudden thought that this wasn't home. he suddenly didn't feel comfortable there and he shifted slightly, moving to grip one hand onto his pillow, the pillow from their old house. the pillow from home. that was where they should be. they should be at home. with their mother and father sitting around a table with one and other, laughing and joking about something stupid that one of them had done. there was always stories going around their house. he closed his eyes and turned his face into the pillow, moving his hand from lynn's fur as he pushed his arms under the pillow as he buried his face in it.
he couldn't help it. he'd started thinking about his parents. their faces flashed into his head, his father. his lifeless face staring up at him from zander's lap. the tramatised look on zander's face when he had been holding him and the look on drew's face when he had burst into the room. his mother's face. soft even in death it had been hard to see. stained with blood from the fight she had been in. he gripped the pillow tight and let out a strangled noise as a sob ripped from his chest. he lost track of how long he lay there with his head buried into his pillow, his body shaking with the sobs that didn't seem to want to relent. he shifted on the bed slightly, his hands gripping onto the pillow and the blanket beneath him as his emotions got the better of him, after a month of holding everything in the flood gates had opened.

Braelynn had soon settled down next to him, her back pressed against his side and her head resting on the bed as he continued to pet her. People always seemed to get lost in thought when petting her. It probably helped that she had amazingly soft fur, as she'd been told. He didn't moved for a while, just pet her and lay there. But when she felt him stir, she lifted her head with her eyes open to watch him. She often wished she knew what people were thinking. A lot was probably going through Ranger's mind right now. He'd been through a lot the last year, like many of them. But he'd had to witness his parents' murder. That was something she couldn't relate to. Zander seemed to be coping with it all well, but Ranger.... Ranger was struggling.
He'd turned into the pillow and stopped petting her. A few moments later and she heard that first sob. The bed shook as he cried, each sob wracking his body violently. She stood up on all fours and watched him for a moment. Carefully she crept closer to the head of the bed, where he was gripping the pillow tightly and sobbing into it. Letting out a soft coo that sounded almost sympathetic, Braelynn rubbed her head against his shoulder and cooed again. If you didn't know any better it was almost like she was.... trying to comfort him.

@braelynn eventually he calmed down enough to feel zander's fox rubbing her head against his shoulder. he wiped his face on the pillow that was bunched up in his arms and he took a shaky breath and swallowed. his throat was dry, his face was stinging and his body felt heavy. he shifted slightly and rolled onto his side, stretching out as he brought his hand to his face to rub his palm over under his eyes and over his cheeks. he reached his other hand out to scratch the fox on the head as he took a few more shaky breaths and kept calming himself down. he chewed his lip as he listened to see if anyone had come into the apartment while he'd had his break down. he sniffed a little and looked back at the fox. "thanks foxie" he said softly as he rolled onto his back and closed his eyes, planning on drifting off to sleep as soon as he could.
-- end.
