@gaius As he talked, she kept staring at her feet, wanted to melt back into the moment she had been in before, but also wishing she could dissapear. Who was she kidding, he could never love her. Could he even enjoy being around her? Her mother and father had not been very good influences in her life, she had scars, terrors, and trauma from a life lived with them. However they had taught her some valuable lessons, such as the one Gaius was speakig about now. Should she ever consume alcohol, she wouldn't let it control her. Should she ever become frustrated with someon, she would never lash out at them. And when she was in her own home that she created, it would be a place of love. Her heart fluttered to think that Gaius might want the same thing as her. Rosaria kept her eyes trained down, her mouth quiet. Gaius was apparently done explaining himself, it was a good explination. He hadn't meant to hurt her feelings, that was nice to know, even if she didn't know if she could believe it yet or not. But then he kept going, talking about their arranged marriage. She felt her hear deflate, She should have known better than to trust someone like him, she should have-- Out of the corner or her eye, she saw him turn to look at her. He started saying things that were wonderful to hear, but could he really mean them? Before she could consider her actions she looked up at him, meeting his eyes with a slight glimmer of hope. "And every time you should the actual you, I believe it more and more" Then she glanced away. How could he see through her facade so easily? No one else, except perhaps Dusti, but not even her recently, had been able to break it down so susinctly. She was doing what her parents taught her. Don't show hurt, that is how they hurt you more. Don't let your words betray you. Those lessons had been pounded into, sometimes litterally. When Gaius paused, she looked back at him. He seemed to be thinking, then he took her hand in his and brought it to his lips, kissing her knuckle. Surprise mixed with the blush that rushed to her cheeks. "I like you." he said. He liked the piece of her that she loved and cherished the most. The part of her that she hid and protected. The part that he so easily had brought out that day in the library. A tear leaked out , trailing dow her cheek, followed closely by another. They didn't stop, instead increasing in frequency. It wasn't Rosaria Flint that he wanted to spend time with. It wasn't the invisible girl who had avoided him for years. It was her, Rusti. Once again, letting her impulse take over, a highly rare occurance for her, she finally moved out from under his arm and wrapped her own arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. "No one has ever said anything like that to me before." she whispered. "Thank you." Then she pulled away from him, only so she could better look into his eyes. "I... I really like you too, Gaius." She finally released the words into the open.

Gaius would be the first to admit that catching people in a lie with a 100% success rate was not always good. It was useful, to be sure, and it shaped him in ways he did and didn't know, but it wasn't always a good thing. Sometimes, people had good reasons to lie, or thought they did. But reason didn't matter to Gaius. A lie ignited his temper, no matter what.
But right now, he couldn't help but feel it was a good thing that he knew when Rosaria was being Rosaria and when she wasn't. Sure, she was crying now, but somehow he didn't think she was sad. He was a bit stoic for tears of relief, but Gaius imagined he would look like this when he finally escaped his father's thumb.
Heh. Which would be the day of their wedding, funny enough.
The hug surprised him. But not nearly as much as how easily his arms found their way around her waist to pull her close. “No one has ever said anything like that to me before.” The logical part of Gaius considered how rarely she dropped her facade, and how few people would be able to see through it—he only could because he saw through lies, it wasn't like she's slipped up other than their time in the library—but he ruthlessly stomped on that thought. He wasn't romantic, but even he knew better than to bring logic into this.
And now she was looking at him with watery brown eyes, but they were bright. Brighter than her sister's, warmer—he couldn't remember Dusti ever looking at him with anything other than cold dislike. “I... I really like you too, Gaius.”
He let that sink in for a moment, enjoying the simple truth of those words. For they were honest, that much he knew. And...it felt good. To be liked. Not to be lauded for his grades, or his wit, or resented for the same, or feared for his ability to read lies, or questioned about likely scenarios. Not valued. Liked. On impulse, Gaius leaned toward Rosaria—
—and their noses collided. Gaius jumped back just slightly, but before he could even think about it, a snort of laughter escaped him. Well...the road here hadn't been easy, why should it start now? “Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not very romantic...I've been worrying about that for awhile. How to...to show the way I feel, instead of saying it. Whether you felt the same way. How you would respond if I even tried. I'm...I can't promise I'll ever get good at being romantic. But I'll do my best to show how I feel. And I'll never lie to you, ever.”
He averted his eyes for a second, but then forced them back. He was not going to get embarrassed now, by Merlin! “So...umm...can I...try that again...?”

@gaius His arms stayed around her waist, sending a current of energy up her spine. As she looked in his eyes, she could feel the truth in his words. Her breath caught as she tried to hold back her tears in vain. Why was she even crying? Happiness? Relief? Both? It didn't matter in the moment. Rusti just put a smile on through her tears, a sinceire smile that seemed to crack her invisible mask she wore around everyone. Gaius seemed to be contemplating her words. His thoughts running through his eyes, Rusti could almost make them out. Then he leaned forward, only slightly, but enough that their noses brushed, and her breath caught once again, though her tears had suddenly stopped. He jerked back, but not too far. They were still fairly close as they sat on the stairway. The moonlight filtered through the leaded windows, creating a soft, even romantic light, that spilled over them and cascaded halfway down the stairs. It was moments like these that Rosaria had never dared to let her self imagine. Yet, here it was. He let out a snort of laughter that caused Rusti to let out a breathy laugh in response, turning her head away. But only slightly. He started to talk, well, ramble just a little bit. How could it be that these two, slated to marry since birth, could have so much in common? It wasn't even a year ago that Rusti had never even talked to Gaius. Yet here they were, with Gaius explaing that he was no good at romance when she was the one who had zero experience in matters of the heart. Eyes met again, Rusti tilting her head back in his direction. "Yes." was her simple response to his question. The simplicity of her answer acted at odds with the complexity of emotions welling inside of her. It was at odds with the multitude of butterflies in her stomach. Yet despite that, she kpet her eyes locked on his and breath even. She wasn't about to let her insecurities ruin this moment. Not today.
