Georgie felt like she didn’t know anything anymore. Her best friend had tried to kill herself, and no matter how much she talked about it, or how many perspectives she got on the situation, Georgie still felt like Max’s suicide attempt had carved a little notch into her heart, one that seemed impossible to smooth out or fill. She had avoided the subject with Louis for fear of his reaction. Georgie had seen the note that Max had intended to be her last thoughts to the world, and Louis had been mentioned in Georgie’s section of it, and she didn’t know how to say anything about it. Instead, she avoided the conversation, which mostly meant avoiding Louis. Georgie felt like she was trading one problem for another – she had gotten Max back, finally, but at the price of her comfort with Louis. She knew that it would be better to rip off the Band-Aid, rather than leave him wondering what he had done wrong, but Georgie couldn’t bring herself to put both of them through the pain of that conversation.

Louis was in quite a predicament; he knew that Georgie was avoiding him, but he also knew that it was because Max was out of the hospital and they were repairing the damage to their broken friendship. He understood; if anything like that had happened between him and Zac, he'd feel the same way he assumed. He couldn't help but feel that it was unfair to Georgie, the deck of cards life had handed to her was pretty rough. Now all that needed to happen was...oh he didn't even want to think of what other bad thing could happen to his girlfriend to make her life even more complicated. He had taken to wandering the castle, well more so than usual; he was always an active person but the wandering helped him think more. He took a turn and there she was; Georgie. She still took his breath away even after everything they'd been through. He gave her an awkward smile and a half wave. "Hey Georgie," he called out to her. @georgiana

Georgie didn’t know what she was expecting – it wasn’t like avoiding Louis forever would work. The fact that it wasn’t mutual avoidance only made it more difficult. If Louis was trying to avoid her, too, then they’d probably never have a reason to run into each other. Now, faced with her boyfriend unexpectedly, Georgie felt like a deer in the headlights. “Hi, Louis.” She answered, sure she sounded as awkward as he looked. She didn’t really have any choice but to approach him, so she did, standing on the tips of her toes to kiss his cheek. Normal. She was trying to act normal, and ignore the elephant in the room. “How have you been?” Georgie didn’t need to point out that she hadn’t been around to see how he was. Louis’s cousin had been picked as the Triwizard Champion, and she felt a little guilty for not being there to support him through whatever he was feeling about his cousin’s competition.

How was Louis? That was an interesting question nowadays. Usually Louis was fine, he had been even better than fine before the Tournament Announcement, before Max tried to take her on life. Now? So much had happened. "I'm alright, considering," he said with a half shrug, gently putting his hand on Georgie's waist. "Zac had a nasty infection so I had to rush him to the hospital wing the other day. He's going to be alright though; just cracked a rib and it almost punctured his lung," he said, trying to sound casual. He had been terrified in reality; going up to their dormitory to find Isaac laying in his feverish state. "He's been so worried about his sister Xan that he hasn't taken care of himself," he admitted. He hesitated; he wanted to ask how Max was because he did truly care about the girl. But he didn't know if it was okay to ask that. "How...how is she?" he asked awkwardly, knowing Georgie would know who he was speaking of.

Georgie’s eyes widened slightly when Louis said that Isaac had an infection. She wasn’t really friends with the other boy, but she knew that he and Louis were close. Apparently both of them were having poor luck in the best friend staying healthy department. She let out a little sigh of relief when Louis said that Zac would be alright; she knew that wondering whether or not your best friend was going to die was…nerve-wracking, to say the least. “I’m sorry.” She offered. “Xan’s the girl in the hospital wing, right?” Georgie hadn’t heard much about it, but she had heard people saying that one of Hogwarts’s students was practically living in the hospital wing. When Louis asked about her – obviously a different her than Xan Meagle – Georgie took a deep breath. It was now or never. “In Max’s suicide note she said that I should be happy with you and I don’t know what that means.” The words were rushed and slurred together, but she hoped that Louis had heard everything, because she couldn’t bear to repeat it.

Louis nodded. “Yeah Xan has this disease...Zac tried to explain it to me but he kept on having to stop. From what I’ve gathered, it’s not good. But she’s still fighting it, so there’s always what. He just wants everyones focus to be on her health, no matter what his is,” he told her, then chuckled. “Though just from knowing Xan she’d probably be pretty furious at him if she knew he’d risked his own health for nobility.”
He watched Georgie take a breath; she was about to say something. So Louis stayed silent, waiting for her to come out and say it. When she did, part of Louis was shocked that Max would mention Georgie and Louis’ relationship in a letter. The other part of him? Well that part had been expecting it the minute he found out what Max had attempted. He knew that Georgie and Max’s friendship had been broken when he became her boyfriend. It had not been what he had wanted at all; he liked Max plenty and he thought she hadn’t minded him. Perhaps she’d felt that Georgie could not focus on both Louis and her on the same time; that part made him feel sad. “Oh,” he finally said, clasping his hands in front of him. He shifted his weight awkwardly, his eyes never leaving Georgie. “Are...you going to talk to her? About that?” he asked quietly.

Georgie nodded along when Louis started talking about his friend’s sister’s disease. It sounded complicated, to say the least, and Georgie felt bad for the girl. “That sucks.” She commented, though she definitely could agree with where Zac was coming from. If Lance was sick, Georgie wouldn’t want anyone to be worrying about her. She could also understand Xan, though, because if she was sick and Lance was hurt…well, she wouldn’t want anyone to be worrying about her then, either. It was complicated.
Then they got to the crux of the issue, and Georgie flinched when Louis asked about confronting Max. “I…don’t really know what to tell her.” Georgie admitted. “Because I don’t know if she wants me to choose between her or you, and even if she did want me to choose…” Georgie trailed off. She couldn’t make that choice. She wouldn’t make that choice, because living without Max would be living without lungs, and living without Louis would be living without a heart. And she couldn’t do either. “So…that’s why I’ve been avoiding you.” Georgie added lamely. “Sorry. My fault.” Really, when wasn’t it her fault? Georgie was all kinds of screwed up, and she almost felt bad for Louis having to deal with her.

Louis gave Georgie a small, sad smile. “I think, in the long run, Max won’t want you to choose between her and me. I think for a lot of people it just takes maintaining a balance between your relationship and friendships. It’s really difficult, not that I know from my own experience but with my sisters,” he reasoned. He took a deep breath, then sighed. “I don’t blame you for avoiding me; we’ve spent a lot of time together both this summer, and on the train, and this school year. I can sort of see why Max would feel left out; I’d offer to reach out to her, but I get the feeling it’s not the best time,” he said, running a hand through his blonde hair, letting it rumple a little. “But...Georgie if you feel like you need to focus on Max, I want you to know that’s okay. I mean, that I understand. Max was around a lot longer than I have been for you and...well, the reality is, she really needs you now,” he finally got out. He knew that in order to help Max recover, at least in an emotional sense, Georgie would need to be available for her. Louis knew that he’d do the same for Zac in that position, so in that way he got it.

Louis was acting so safe and mature about everything, and that was frustrating. If he had been whiny or rude or anything less than completely perfect, then she could have gotten angry and stormed away and actually felt good about her decision to go be with Max. But no, Louis Weasley was a thousand times better of a person than Georgie would ever be, and he was so calm about everything. “Everyone wants to talk to her now.” Georgie agreed when Louis said it might not be the best time. Georgie included herself in that group; she cared about Max long before her best friend had attempted suicide, but so had everyone else who was trying to talk to Max now, and it was…confusing, to say the least, to find out where she belonged in the scheme of things. “I don’t want to focus on anything.” Georgie sighed. Focusing on Louis was what had gotten her into the situation in the first place, and even if her boyfriend said otherwise, Georgie was worried that focusing on Max would just swing the pendulum the other way. The Hufflepuff nodded, though, when Louis said that Max had been around a lot longer than he had. That was why Max had been her first love, and always would be. And Max…did need her, even if ‘need’ was a word that they had underused over the course of their relationship. “Thank you.” Georgie said softly. Maybe she was frustrated that she couldn’t huff away, but it was also for the better that she talked to Louis. She had needed him to tell her that everything was okay, and now she had that.

Louis could sense that Georgie had thought, or maybe even hoped, that he wouldn’t be okay with everything that was going on. However, growing up with two sisters, one who happened to be the Minister for Magic after two people on the job had been murdered, plus parents who had been through the Second Wizarding War had given him a sense of empathy to a point of annoyingly calm in times like this. “I guess….if she ever mentions to you that she wants to talk to me, not that I think she’d go to that conversation any time soon, I’m here,” he told her with a half shrug.
Louis nodded as Georgie said she didn’t want to focus on anything. “So let’s not, let’s go for a walk,” he suggested, holding out his arm for her. “The leaves outside are changing to red, orange and yellow and they’ll crunch under our feet. Plus it’s not too cold out yet -- though I rather expect for you anything I consider tepid would be cool,” he teased, referring to her Southern routes. Having Georgie point out where she was from on a globe, Louis had recognized just how much further north they all were than her home, so he imagined the weather was far different as well. Still, she had been there for several years now but who was to say how long it took to get acclimated to new climates?

Georgie nodded when Louis said that he would be there if Max ever wanted to talk to him. “I don’t think she will.” Georgie replied honestly. Her best friend wasn’t always the best about reaching out to others. What Max had tried to do just proved that she was excellent at keeping her pain to herself, and that just made Georgie more determined to pry Max open. Someone needed to see inside eventually, and it was going to be Georgie.
Georgie smiled a little when Louis suggested that they go on a walk instead of focusing on any issue. “Sounds like fun.” She said when Louis mentioned that the leaves on the trees were changing colors. When he mentioned that it wasn’t too cold out yet, but that they’d have different ideas of what constituted as cold, Georgie rolled her eyes. “You know, I’d never seen snow until I came here.” Georgie said, grabbing onto Louis’s hand. “But I think that I’ve kind of adjusted to the cold.” The key words in that phrase were, of course, kind of. “But I’d like to see you try to survive a South Carolina summer.” The sweltering heat and oppressive humidity could be a lot even for someone who was used to it – for a Brit, they would probably be absolutely unbearable.

“Excellent,” Louis declared, swinging his arm so their entwined hands swung back and forth as they walked outside. It was still a beautiful day, with only a light breeze reminding them it was indeed autumn at Hogwarts. The leaves were all warm shades of red, gold and orange; half still on the trees while the other lay on the ground waiting for students to crunch on. “I think I would be able to survive a South Carolina summer well enough. I’d just have to be in the water the whole time. Which means we’d have to get you a canoe with one of those little parasols like they have in Venice so you can be on the water too,” he told her with a wide grin. Louis was a water bug, which did not necessarily mesh well with Georgiana’s visions, but they had worked out the raft thing at his house over the summer quite well. “So...should we go frolic in the leaves? Get your mind off things?” he suggested, looking over to his girlfriend.

It was a beautiful day outside, and Georgie took a deep breath of the fresh autumn air as soon as they were outdoors. Fall was different back home, but Georgie was beginning to prefer British autumns. British winters could go die in a hole, but fall? Georgie could definitely get behind that. Louis said that he would be able to survive a South Carolina summer if he was in the water, and Georgie chuckled. “Even when you’re not in the water, it feels like you’re swimming. It gets really humid, especially where I’m from, since we’re near to the ocean.” Georgie smiled a little to herself. “But when it thunderstorms…” She trailed off. It was a beautiful thing, to see a South Carolina thunderstorm, and Georgie suddenly wished that she could take Louis there with her someday. Back in Britain, though, Louis was asking her to frolic through the leaves. Georgie snorted. “Louis Weasley, do I really look like the kind of girl who frolics?” She asked with a laugh. She would play in the leaves, sure, but frolic? Nope, absolutely not. “I will, however, be content to beat you in a leaf fight!” With that, Georgie scooped up an armful of leaves, and tossed them so they would rain down on her boyfriend.

Louis contemplated the idea of feeling like he was swimming without water, and decided he’d be okay with it. “That’s alright though; that’s what those spinny things…..what do you call them? Those Muggle contraptions. Anyway, yeah that’s what they’re for,” he said, not quite placing the name of the electronic device. He smirked at her next words. “I suppose you don’t look like a girl who frolics,” he said, laughing as the leaves fell around him. His smirk grew to a devilish grin. “But you do look like the type of girl who would dive into a pile of leaves with her boyfriend!” Before she could stop him, Louis swept Georgie off of her feet and brought her into the giant leaf pile as he dove in. Surfacing, he laughed as he put a leaf in Georgie’s hair. “The red of this leaf offsets the color of your hair nicely,” he told her, still grinning widely.

Spinny things? Georgie had to think a moment about what Louis could possibly mean before she figured it out, laughing at Louis’s description. “Fans. They’re called fans.” She said with a laugh. “You know they don’t actually make you cooler, right? They just circulate air that’s already around. The reason it works is because it causes sweat to evaporate off your skin.” Maybe Georgie was the daughter of two magical people, but all four of her grandparents had been No-Majs – Muggles? She didn’t know which term to use anymore – and she knew a thing or two about their technology. Like leaf blowers. Louis would love a leaf blower, Georgie would bet, and – oof! Before she knew it, Georgie was surrounded by leaves, and she couldn’t help but laugh as Louis picked a leaf out of her hair. “This one matches the Gryffindor flag.” Georgie mused, picking a leaf from the pile near her. “Wonder if there’s any for Hufflepuff.” She said.
