The Triwizard Champions had been chosen, and Viola hadn’t been picked. It was fine. She hadn’t particularly expected to win, nor had she thought herself important enough to be lauded by the entire school – she was too realistic to think that. What wasn’t fine, though, was that the Goblet had made a mistake. There were about seven billion people in the world who would be a better Champion than the whiny Greyback. All he would do if he lost a challenge was sit around and pity himself, instead of working hard on the next one to do better. Viola knew that if Maria could read thoughts, she would be nothing more than a pile of char on the floor, but Maria couldn’t read thoughts, and she wasn’t even around, so Viola was safe in her own thoughts. She didn’t know anything about the other two Champions, but she knew that she disliked hers, so Viola was probably going to get a dart board and try to determine who she would support that way. Darts. That sounded like a fun idea. Viola had heard rumors about a room in the Hogwarts castle that would become whatever you wanted it to be, and she wanted a dartboard right about now, so maybe she would go looking for that. Never mind that curfew was coming soon – she’d be back to the ship in time.

Axel was pleased by the evening. He loved Halloween, loved the feast and he actually knew the Hogwarts Triwizard Champion. Well ... he didn't really know her. More like, he knew who she was. Anna Weasley. She was in his house and he was excited for the party that would start as soon as she came out of her meeting with the other champions and their mentors. Yeah, Gryffindor Common room was going to be a riot. He was making his way up to the common room with everyone else when he realized that he left his potions book in the Room of Requirement. Crap. He left it there earlier when he was studying ahead because, well because it was potions and he loved it. He wanted somewhere he could focus without being interrupted, so he'd gone to that particular room. Then, when he'd almost been late to the feast because he got distracted, he left the book in the room, promising he'd get it before he went to bed. He didn't want to lose it permanently. So he veered off path and made his way to the Room of Requirement, hoping to just pop in and grab it so he wouldn't miss the start of the party. What he wasn't expecting was for someone to be there already. "Hi," Axel said, forcing an easy smile at the girl. Red robes. Durmstrang. Durmstrang's champion wasn't a girl, so she probably wasn't very happy about the results tonight. "Sorry, I'm not trying to interrupt you; I just left a book here ..." he started, not really knowing if she would want to talk to anyone right now. She didn't seem very happy.

Viola had found the mysterious room easily enough. Apparently it was a rather recent discovery, but Viola didn’t care. She just wanted a place to be angry. Being angry didn’t always mean being alone, but Viola was glad that, for the most part, no one bothered her. Viola wasn’t as good at darts as she had originally anticipated, but part of that was probably due to the fact that she wasn’t lining her shots up as much as she ought to. She just lobbed them in the general direction of the board. At some point, it stopped being a method for anger management and started being kind of fun. Maybe she could take up dart throwing as a career. If she ever got any good at it, that was.
Viola was halfway through her fifth round of darts when she heard the door to the room open. The kid that was standing there was pretty damn lucky that she hadn’t had a dart in her hand when he had come in, otherwise he would have lost an eye. Well, he would have come close to losing an eye. If three feet away counted as close. The kid said that he needed his book, and Viola took out her wand. “Accio book.” She said, slightly bored. The book in question flew into her hand, and she made eye contact with the boy before tossing the book to him. “You know how to play darts, kid?” Viola asked. Maybe she’d do better if she had some competition.

Axel watched as the girl summoned his book, catching it easily when the girl tossed it to him. He was about to turn and leave the room when she asked if he knew how to play darts. Axel smiled, "A little," he said. Really, he was a lot better at things like skipping rocks, but how different could darts be? "Can I give it a go?" he asked, stepping back inside the room and letting the door close behind him. Really, this sounded like fun and it was something that his siblings would never let him do. Good thing they weren't here with him. Axel smiled when some darts with a blue stripe appeared on the table. He picked them up, assuming they were for him, now that he'd decided to play. "You want to go first?" he gestured that she should go ahead. This was interesting. Really, he was too young for any of the foreigners to be very interested in him at all, but playing darts with one would be fun. And Axel was always ready for fun.

Viola had to admit that she was honestly surprised that the kid actually knew how to play darts. She turned to look at him full-on for the first time, and became even more shocked. Merlin, he was practically fresh from the cradle! Still, the room seemed to have acquiesced to his desire to play, and she had invited him, so there was no use in rescinding the invitation now. And if someone came in and got mad at her, she could always play the ‘I don’t speak English’ card, even though English was her first (and only) language. She really ought to have learned Bulgarian, given the country she lived in, but it hadn’t ever seemed important.
“Sure.” Viola said with a shrug when the kid asked her if she wanted to go first. It didn’t matter to her either way, but since he offered, she might as well. Viola made sure to take the time to line up the shot, and then threw the dart with a quick flick of her wrist. It wasn’t near the bullseye, or even where she had aimed, but it was in the board, and that was more than she could have said of some of her earlier attempts. Viola nodded to the kid. “Your go.”

Axel watched as the girl threw the dart. He'd never done darts before, so he watched how she held it closely. He didn't want to make it completely obvious that he didn't know what he was doing. Maybe he would be able to do a decent job, even though it was his first time. She hit the board, which was probably better than what he'd do. "Nice job," he said with a nod. Maybe she'd take offense to that if she played darts a lot, but he didn't mean it that way. Axel wasn't really one to make fun of others. He smiled, "Alright," he said when she said it was his turn. He wasn't sure, because they did both have a handful of darts. Maybe the game was that one person threw all of their darts and then the other person went. Apparently not, though.
Axel picked up a dart and held it the way he'd observed her and then looked at the board. He moved the dart forward and backward, practicing before he released it. His eyes narrowed as he looked at the board once more, aiming and then released. He grinned when his dart hit the ring that was farthest away from the center. Not bad for a first try. He turned to the girl. "Back to you?" he asked, not really sure how the game worked, but thinking it was probably something like that. "I'm Axel, by the way," he told her, though he wasn't really sure if she cared. Either way, they might as well talk a little while they played, right?

Viola raised her eyebrows when the kid told her she had done a nice job with her throw. Was he horribly naïve, or horribly nice? She kind of hated him for being such a good sport, and for his low standards of what counted as “nice”. She wasn’t going to argue with him, though – this was supposed to be a way for her to calm down, not get even angrier. Viola watched as the kid took his turn. He took quite a bit to get around to releasing the dart for real, going back and forth and back and forth quite a few more times than was strictly necessary. But she was going to be chill, she was going to be cool. The kid hit the outermost ring, and Viola shrugged her approval. That definitely wasn’t a nice job, so she wasn’t going to pretend it was, but the kid deserved to know that hitting the board was good enough for her.
“Yeah, back to me.” Viola said with a nod. When the kid said his name, Viola realized they had never properly introduced themselves – hence why she was killing him ‘the kid’ in her head. “Viola. I’m from Durmstrang.” It would have taken an idiot not to see that, but Hogwarts was filled with plenty of those, so Viola wasn’t going to assume anything. She took her turn at the dartboard, her second dart within millimeters of her first. She needed to improve her aim, it seemed. “You excited about the Tournament and all that shit?” She asked. If Axel wanted to talk, they would talk, but she certainly wasn’t going to censor herself for him.

She did not seem happy. Which, considering that the champions were chosen and that she wasn't one of them, wasn't particularly surprising, but still. Axel nodded when she said her name and then held back a smirk when she said she was from Durmstrang. That was obvious by her robes, but he wasn't going to point that out. He didn't want to upset her even more. Her second dart was pretty close to her first and Axel picked up his next dart, eyes on the board. This time he flicked the dart pretty quickly, rolling his eyes when it landed on almost the opposite end of the board as last time, still in the last ring. Oh well. He shrugged at her question, "I think it'll be cool to watch," he said casually. "I've heard a little bit about them, so that'll be interesting. Other than the three tasks, it doesn't really change much about my life," he told her honestly. Really it didn't. Other than the three days when the tasks would be held and the Yule Ball, this tournament wasn't going to affect him. "What about you?" he asked, though he was sure he partly knew the answer. At least, he assumed he did. No, she wasn't excited. Why would she be? She wasn't chosen. Unless she wanted to watch it, but she didn't seem like the type that would be satisfied watching.

Viola couldn’t help but smirk a little when the kid’s second dart hit the outer ring, but in a totally different area of the dartboard. He wasn’t much good at accuracy or precision, it seemed. “Try not to overcompensate.” Viola told him. If he had been a little older, maybe she would have tried to inject some innuendo into that statement, but as it was, she didn’t think it was wise, lest she have to give some poor kid the birds and the bees talk. Did they have a class for that at Hogwarts? Viola couldn’t remember taking one at Durmstrang, but that would have been a while back for her, now.
“Cool to watch. That’s stupid.” She repeated. Somehow, she didn’t think watching three people compete in death-defying stunts was cool to watch. It was only cool if you were one of those three people. Axel went on to say that the Tournament didn’t change much about his life, and Viola nodded. It changed a fair bit of hers, since she was transferring schools and everything. “I’m not thrilled.” She deadpanned. She wasn’t going to give him the third degree, because it wasn’t his fault that the Goblet had made a stupid choice, but Viola definitely wasn’t going to pretend like everything was sunshine and rainbows. Viola threw another dart at the target, and it thunked into the bullseye. She turned to Axel, and raised an eyebrow. “Beat that.”

Axel was glaring at the dartboard. He wasn’t all too big into competition, but he did like to see improvement when he did things, and that did not seem to be going his way at the moment, which was annoying for him. He nodded shortly when she told him not to overcompensate, “I’ll do my best,” he muttered. He wasn’t really trying to be a brat, but he wouldn’t be surprised if she took offense. People tended to do that around Axel, whether he was trying for it or not.
Axel shrugged when she said it was stupid to think of the task as something cool to watch. “Well, it’s not like I ever had a chance of entering, so really all I can do is watch,” he told her, though she already knew that. She was probably just upset because the announcement was so fresh and she hadn’t been made champion. Not that he would say that. He nodded when she said she wasn’t thrilled. “Are you still going to watch the tasks?” he asked curiously. He groaned when her next throw landed right in the middle of the board. “Are you kidding me?” He picked up a dark, glaring at the board and just threw it, surprised when it landed on the ring right outside the bullseye. He didn’t beat her, but that was a personal best. Probably just a fluke though, since he didn’t know how to use strategy in this game.

The kid grumbled something under his breath after Viola’s comment about overcompensation, and she smirked at him. He must’ve been one of those sore loser types. Either that, or he didn’t like being corrected when he was wrong. Viola hoped that he made an attitude correction soon, otherwise he was going to be receiving an earful from her.
“Still, it’s not cool to want to watch people potentially go to their deaths.” Viola pointed out. It was a macabre idea. She had been willing to ignore the whole dying bit when she still had a chance at being the one to put her life on the line, but now that it wasn’t her, she just thought it was stupid. When asked if she was going to watch the tasks anyway, Viola lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “Dunno yet. I guess I’ll go to the first one and then see if the others are worth my time.” She’d probably go to the others for the social aspect of it if not to watch the event itself. Viola smirked when Axel asked if she was kidding about the placement of her dart. When he threw, it hit much closer to the center than his other two, and Viola raised her eyebrow. “Do you perform better when you’re angry?” She asked. He wouldn’t be the first one. Viola was down to her last two darts, and she was about to throw one when she turned back to Axel. “Because I don’t.” She needed that extra moment to calm down, and when she threw the next dart, it was in the same ring as Axel’s previous one. Not as good as her bullseye, but still a decent shot.

Axel looked over at the girl beside him. Why was she so determined to focus on the negative? "I thought it was supposed to be a lot more safe this year so no one dies," Axel said, probably sounding like an innocent school-child who believed everything they were told. Still, it was true, wasn't it? Didn't the ministry want to have a successful tournament without any deaths? Then she said she wasn't sure if she wanted to go to the tasks and it would depend on the first one. That sounded ridiculous to Axel, if for nothing else going to the Tasks would be a fun opportunity to get to know other people, but whatever. If she decided not to go that was her loss. Axel shrugged when she asked if he performed better when he was angry. "I don't know. I normally do better at things when I'm either stressed or don't care about it, but I have no idea about angry." She threw again and hit the same ring as him and Axel found that he really wanted to make it this time. Axel picked up his next to last dart and threw it quickly, grinning. It finally hit the middle! Granted, it was the very edge of the middle circle, not at all in the middle of the circle, but it still counted. "Your turn," he said, trying to contain his excitement a bit. He had a feeling this girl wouldn't care if he was excited or not.

“They’ve said that before.” Viola replied evenly when Axel stated that the Tournament was supposed to be a lot safer this year. “Just look at the papers from thirty years back.” That was when they had decided to reboot the Tournament, and it was promised to be better and safer and all that jazz. And then someone had still died. Viola supposed that the extenuating circumstances – the rise of a Dark wizard, that was – made it slightly more forgiveable, but still, who knew? Viola wasn’t going to worry about it much, though, since it wasn’t her neck on the line. They were all big kids who had made their own decision, et cetera, et cetera. “Do you wanna find out?” Viola asked with a grin when Axel said he didn’t know if he did things better when angry. Viola knew a thing or two about pushing people’s buttons, and she wouldn’t be above pushing the kid’s if she thought it would make him a better competitor. It was boring to compete if you were going to win by a mile – the nail biters were the best kind of competition. It seemed that wasn’t necessary, though, because Axel’s next dart hit on the edge of the bullseye. “Well I’ll be damned.” Viola said with a chuckle when she picked up her last dart. She tossed it more carelessly than the others, and it stuck on the outermost edge of the board – even a millimeter to the side and she would’ve hit the wall. If Axel hit the bullseye again, Viola was pretty sure the game would end up a tie. That would be interesting to see.

Axel nodded, sure that what she said was true, even though he hadn't taken the time to look up anything about the last time the Triwizard Tournament was held at Hogwarts. "That's true," he said slowly. He wished he had something to say to contest her claim that it wasn't safe, but he didn't.
She asked if he wanted to know if he performed better when he was angry and Axel shrugged. He was pretty laid back and honestly not very easy to anger, so he didn't think that would be an issue. "You can try if you want, but I think I'll be fine," he responded after thinking about it for a moment. She was obviously surprised when he hit the middle of the target and Axel watched as she tried again. She missed, barely hitting the board. His mouth twisted into a small smile, though he tried not to grin at her. He didn't want her to think he was bragging or something. He picked up his next dart, took a breath and then threw it, grinning when it actually hit the very center of the middle, a perfect bullseye. Oh yeah. He looked over at Viola. "Now what?" he asked. They were both out of darts, so did they need to collect them and do another round to see who won, or ... he didn't know what another option might be. He didn't know this game at all.

The kid had a way of surprising her, Viola thought, the corner of her mouth twisting into something resembling a smile. “It looks like we tied.” She commented when the kid asked what happened now. “So, we could play another round, or you could forfeit and declare me the winner.” She said, raising her eyebrows in a challenge to the kid. She was certain that it was nearing curfew, and it would be interesting to see whether he would gamble getting in trouble in order to prove that he was the best. There were certainly people like that at Hogwarts, from what Viola had seen. Of course, she didn’t care if she was late back to the ship. There was probably going to be a punishment for it, but she kept her nose relatively clean, and one infraction wasn’t going to do her in. And, of course, there was no way she would say that the kid was the winner unless he had honest-to-God beat her.
