Hugo grinned when Xan agreed that they wouldn't tell anyone. He was glad they'd gotten that out of the way. Now he could just sit here and enjoy the sensation of her painting on him without neding to worry about the consequences that would come from this. Hopefully there weren't big ones, but at least this way he wouldn't need to worry about it.
When Xan said that he would remind her this wasn't a dream, Hugo smiled and nodded. She wasn't painting on him at the moment, so it didn't mess her up, which was probably a good thing. Hugo smiled when she said that it was looking good so far, adding that it was a good canvas. Rather, that he was a good canvas. "Yes, you did." He echoed as he closed his eyes. He was a little tired, but more than that, Hugo just wanted to focus on the way this felt. After all, this was definitely not going to be an every-day occurrence so he needed to log it away in his memory. "How far are you?" He asked after a few minutes of sitting there, with her painting on him in companionable silence. It was nice, the way that they could be together in silence and still feel comfortable.

“I’m over halfway done.” Xan answered when Hugo asked how far she was. She had just finished with the majority of the green paint that was going to be covering Hugo, and after one more flourish of green, she felt prepared to move onto the blue. “Make that two thirds of the way done.” Xan said as she cleaned off her brush. Four of the six colors done wasn’t bad, but Xan was beginning to wonder how long they had been there. Since they weren’t exactly here with permission, she worried that a nurse would come and find her soon, and scold Hugo in the process. “Just blue and purple left to go.” She added, in case Hugo was wondering the specifics. They would probably go quicker, just because with less empty canvas space there would be fewer choices with how to configure those swirls of color. Purple wouldn’t even really be anything artistic, just filling in the otherwise empty space. Xan took a deep breath. “Tell me if you need a break.” She told Hugo. Sitting still for long periods at a time could be difficult for anyone, but it was even harder when someone was painting you.

Hugo was finally getting used to the sensation of Xan painting on him, but it would still be a relief when she was done. It wasn't that he didn't like it, but he felt very ... vulnerable, sitting on this stool with hardly anything on. If anyone walked in on them- no, he didn't want to think about what would happen. That wasn't going to happen. No one ever came into this classroom anyway. They'd be fine. He smiled when Xan told him she was two thirds of the way done. The good thing about the whole situation was that it made her happy. Really, that was what Hugo wanted. "Blue and purple. That's doable," he commented lightly, not wanting to sit there in silence, but also unable to think of anything actually useful to say. He shook his head when she asked if he needed a break. "All I'm doing is sitting here," he told her honestly. "Let me know if you need a break." After all, she was the one doing all the work. Hugo just wanted to make sure she didn't overexert herself. That was not the point of this.

Hugo said that finishing just blue and purple was doable, and Xan smiled. “These last two colors shouldn’t take as long because there’s less empty space.” She said, telling Hugo what she had been thinking earlier. Hugo then insisted that he wouldn’t need a break, since all he was doing was sitting there. He then turned the question around on the Ravenclaw, who rolled her eyes. “I don’t get tired when I paint.” Xan told Hugo, clucking her tongue slightly at him. “You know that.” It wasn’t the truth. It was more like Xan just didn’t notice when she was tired when she was painting – she only remembered after she was done and was on the brink of passing out. Either way, Hugo knew of how focused she could get when she was paying attention to her painting. Xan continued to put swirls of blue onto Hugo’s skin. “I might need a pastry of some sort when we’re done.” She told Hugo. “So be prepared for a foray into the kitchens.” Xan going to the kitchen probably wasn’t practical, but she couldn’t see Hugo objecting to her suggestion of him going on her errand run.

Xan said they were almost done and Hugo nodded his head slightly before remembering that he needed to stay still. He froze, mid-nod, but he couldn't stop the smile from covering his face. He laughed at her response to his question. "Right, I forgot. You just paint until you drop. My bad. You're not about to drop now though, are you?" Hugo was mostly teasing, but not entirely. He was starting to really like how it felt to have her painting on him, but if she got worse suddenly, it could lead to some awkward questions. He rolled his eyes at himself, determined not to think like that. He needed to stay positive. "I'm always in the mood for pastries," he agreed instantly. "You know that." He liked food, as a general rule, and pastries he always loved. Though, if they were going to go to the kitchens, they would probably have to remove the paint so he wouldn't end up running into someone who would ask him why he had paint on his face and arms (since he'd definitely be putting his clothes on first).

Xan smiled at Hugo when he remembered that she – in his words – painted until she dropped. He asked if she was about to drop now, and Xan shook her head. “I don’t think I am.” But the whole thing about painting until she dropped was that she honestly didn’t realize how tired she was getting. Now that her attention was drawn to it, Xan supposed she was a little tired, but not tired enough to fall asleep right then and there. She would definitely be able to make it through the rest of painting Hugo without anything bad happening, unless she hit a wall or something like that. Xan finished up the swirls of blue that she was painting. “Last color.” She announced to Hugo as she moved on to violet. She paused for a moment to laugh at Hugo’s comment about loving pastries. “I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t appreciate a decent croissant.” She told him, beginning to work with the violet paint.

Hugo laughed when Xan said she didn't think she was about to drop. It sounded so hesitant that he didn't feel reassured at all. He wasn't worried. If she did drop, he'd carry her to the hospital wing. It would just be easier to be allowed to sneak her out in the future if he didn't bring her back in such a state. "I guess we'll have to see what happens then," he muttered with another chuckle. She said one more color was left and Hugo sat a little taller. "As well you shouldn't," he agreed. "You're making me hungry though." He didn't want to ask how much longer, but he was definitely ready to go grab some food with her ... after cleaning himself off. Which was sad, because she was putting so much work into it. He'd be able to wait a while for food before they left.

Xan chuckled when Hugo said that they’d have to see what happened. Even if she did feel drop-dead tired, she’d probably wait until after Hugo was gone to actually sleep. She didn’t like showing anyone – but least of all Hugo and her siblings – what her illness was really doing to her. They found out anyways, but there was a difference between them seeing it and her showing them. And, of course, she knew it would be easier for Hugo to justify sneaking her out if she didn’t come back looking like a reanimated corpse. “You have to wait a little bit to be hungry.” Xan said, leaning down to peck Hugo on the lips, one of the only parts of his body she hadn’t painted. Xan walked around her boyfriend one final time, nodding to herself. “My masterpiece is complete!” She announced to Hugo, grinning happily as she took in the rainbow painting that had once been her boyfriend’s skin.

Hugo smiled when she kissed him, then saying that he had to wait a bit before he could be hungry. "Why?" he asked, even though he was pretty sure he already knew why. She wanted to appreciate what she was doing before they had to remove it all. He wondered how well she would be able to remember this in years, or whether or not she'd remember it at all. She then declared that she was done painting and Hugo stood, turning in a circle so she could see what she'd done. "How do I look?" A teasing look was on her face, but he was ready for anything she said. She'd probably like it though. After all, she painted him the way she wanted to. "Now how long are we going to leave me like this?" Hugo looked down at himself curiously. It was weird being all sorts of colors and he wished they had a mirror so he could see it better. "Do you have any mirrors?"

“Well, I don’t think you want to go to the kitchens like that.” She teased. “And I wouldn’t make it by myself.” She added matter-of-factly. It wasn’t a pleasant situation, but it was true. Hugo asked how he looked, and Xan beamed at him. “Wonderful, as always.” Hugo asked how long he was going to be the way he was, and Xan shrugged. “As long or as short as you want.” She had known from the beginning she’d have to wash her work away, so she wasn’t too emotionally attached. It was Hugo’s last question that stumped Xan. “Mirrors?” Xan repeated. “No.” She admitted. Since she hadn’t been the one to prepare the surprise, she hadn’t known to bring anything with her. Xan looked around the room, trying to see if there was any mildly reflective surface. “If you wanted to go over to the window, you could try and see if you could see your reflection there?” She suggested. There was always the chance that someone would see Hugo through the open window, but Xan didn’t know if he would consider that a chance worth taking in order to see the work that she had done on him.

Hugo smiled at Xan's teasing. Honestly, he was glad she said that because he didn't want to be the one to say that her masterpiece would have to go soon. Then he frowned. He didn't like the idea of her not being able to go places on her own. It made him sad to see her so restricted. Still, she was smiling so Hugo tried to keep his energy up. After all, she was the one who was sick, not him. He didn't want to bring her down. He shook his head, "No, you're the one who wanted food. So you should choose when we go and get it. I'm good whenever you're ready." He didn't want to stay up here and talk if she needed food, but he also wasn't ready to go back to normal life until he had to, so Hugo didn't want to make this decision. He looked at the window critically, but moved across the room. He closed the window and then took a few steps backward so he could see his full reflection and no one outside would be able to see. He smiled before turning to her. "You did a really good job, Xan. I hardly recognize me!" She really did a good job, but teasing was part of her nature. She'd be used to that.

Xan shrugged when Hugo insisted that since she was the one who wanted food, she could choose when they went to go and get it. “I really don’t care, Hu.” However, her stomach chose that moment to growl, which made Xan blush bright red. Maybe she was hungrier than she had thought. At least she didn’t need to say it herself now, though, since her rumbling stomach had been easily loud enough for Hugo to hear, which meant that he was probably going got insist that the go get something to eat now. Either that, or he would insist that they get back to the hospital wing and then he’d go get food, since her absence was probably getting suspicious right about now. Hugo complimented her on her artwork, and Xan grinned. “Cover a boy in rainbows and suddenly he’s a new person!” She said, walking over to be beside him. She didn’t want to touch him in case the paint rubbed off on her and gave them away, but she took Hugo’s hand in hers and squeezed softly. “Thank you for doing this for me.” She said. This had been just what she needed, and she couldn’t thank Hugo enough for his ability to practically read her mind, and help her stay sane through all the insanity in the world around them.

Hugo rolled his eyes and was about to give up on the whole point of food when Xan's stomach growled loudly. He laughed, glad that it made the decision for them. "I think you do care," he teased. "We can clean me up and then head down to the kitchens for some food ..." he suggested, fully expecting her to agree. Hugo smiled softly when she came closer and thanked him. "Of course, Xan. All I want is for you to be happy." Truly though. Any moment when she was happy was a success in his book. "Now take one last look at this before we get ready to leave," he instructed her, turning in a circle so she could appreciate her three-dimensional artwork. Then he pulled out his wand and cleaned off pretty quickly, putting his clothes back on. "You ready for some food?" he offered his arm to her once he was ready to leave.

Xan nodded when Hugo said that they could clean him up and then go to the kitchens. He said that all he wanted was for her to be happy, and Xan smiled weakly. She often wondered if Hugo was giving up too much for her and her sickness, especially when he said things like that. It was sweet that he wanted her to be happy, but if she was everything to him, then what would happen if she had to go? Xan was getting better on not dwelling on those sorts of thoughts, but she still did worry sometimes about the future. She followed Hugo’s instructions to take one last look, committing everything to memory as best as she could. Then, an idea popped into her head – perhaps she could make a painting of her painting, and give it to Hugo! That was a brilliant idea, Xan thought, nodding enthusiastically as she once again took Hugo’s hand and journeyed to the kitchens for a bite to eat.
