@open sitting in the boat in the boathouse, ranger rested his head on his hand and looked out at the calm water before him. he hadn't been sailing in forever. not since before the last summer anyway. he had been too busy doing other things to get the chance to take a boat out or dig his camera out from underneath everything in his trunk. but today he was going to change that, he was going to take one of the boats out and spend some time just sitting in the middle of the black lake. it was just after lunch so there would be other students around and he hoped some of them had the same idea he did because there was nothing better than sitting in a boat with the water rocking gently beneath. he reached out to undo the ropes that were holding the boat to the dock and he double checked he had the oars beside him.

Anna needed a break. She needed to get away from all the stress and all the pressures of being a Triwizard Champion. The thing was, where could she go? The school was full of students and everywhere she went, she felt like people wanted to talk to her about the tournament, guessing about the first task and how she would do. She wanted to find Oscar but she didn't know where he was. Besides that, it was unrealistic to think that he wanted to spend all of his time with her, no matter how close they were. He had studies and surely other friends and responsibilities. He couldn't be there all the time. So today it was up to Anna to figure out where she should go to relax.
It took her just a few minutes of wandering on the grounds before she thought of the perfect place. She headed toward the boathouse, sure that it would be mostly empty. It normally was, after all. And she would know that because it was her spot. Hers and Ranger's, that was. Ever since their first year when they'd gotten really close, they'd found it was the perfect place to get away from everyone because no one ever went there. She smiled as she walked into the familiar building, looking around herself with fondness. She really needed to come here more often.
Anna gave a soft chuckle when she saw she wasn't the only one here. Ranger. Of course. The boathouse would hardly feel as much of an escape as it did if he wasn't there. "Hey Ranger," she greeted softly. She didn't want to startle him and it did seem like he was lost in thought. "You mind if I join you?" Last year she wouldn't have even bothered to ask that. She would have just jumped in the boat like it was expected, but she knew how much he'd been struggling lately. Maybe he wanted some alone-time. Hopefully not though, because she could use a chat with him. She'd really grown to appreciate his friendship over the years. Ranger always seemed to understand her, and she hoped he felt the same way about her. She knew that he used to, but after everything that happened this summer things weren't the same. He was more reserved and she missed their easy friendship from before. So she stood on the dock, watching him expectantly and waiting to see if he'd let her join him.

@annelise "Hey Ranger, You mind if I join you?" he couldn't help but jump a little when a familiar voice cut through his thoughts and he turned to see the red headed friend of his. close friend. someone he had spent years relying on. he smiled slightly as he shifted slightly and he let his head nod slightly. "sure anna" he said as he reached his fingers beside him to make sure he had the oars, even though he was certain he had already done that he couldn't quite remember. he actually couldn't think of a more perfect person to go sailing with. anna had been his friend for years, his first crush and his first confidant that wasn't family. in all that had been going on in the last few months he knew he hadn't done much to keep track of anna or any of his friends really. phil was easier, he was over in brazil so ranger didn't have to look at him when he wrote so it was easier to pretend that he was fine to phil, he couldn't do it with everyone else. "climb in and i'll take us out" he said with a small smile.

The second he smiled back Anna felt relief flood flow through her. He was Gavin a hard time, but the fact that he smiled at her meant that he'd let her join him. She knew him well enough to feel confident in that assumption. He nodded and said that she could join him and Anna's smile brightened. She'd missed talking with him, so this was going to be a good thing. She was sure of it. He told her to climb in and Anna nodded. She climbed in quickly, yet carefully, not wanting to tip the boat over. Ranger definitely would not thank her for that if it happened. She let him row them out in relative silence. Really, she just didn't know what to say. She knew Ranger was hurting and struggling with what happened with his family, which was why she'd been giving him his space. At the beginning of the year she figured he'd come to her when he was ready to talk, but he never did. Which made her worry for him even more. "So Range, what do you want to talk about?" She asked, giving him a chance to direct the conversation in a direction he was comfortable with.

@annelise "So Range, what do you want to talk about?" he pulled the oars in from the sides of the boats when they had reached the middle of the black lake. he tucked them down beside his and anna's legs and he shrugged his shoulders slightly. what did he want to talk about? nothing in particular. he couldn't just come out and talk about what he was sure she was hoping he would so he picked a safe enough topic. "the tournament? what do you think the next task will be?" he asked as he leaned his elbows on his knees and he looked at the friend he'd called one of his closest for years.

Ranger took his sweet time telling her what he wanted to talk about. Anna fought the instant reaction to sigh. To be honest, she was tired of talking about the tournament. It felt like that was all people ever wanted to talk about with her. Or like since she was the Hogwarts Champion, there was no use talking to her about anything else. It got annoying, but she didn't want to take that out on Ranger. Of course he didn't know how she felt about it, the two of them hadn't talked in ages. She might as well talk about what he wanted to, for now. Hopefully he would open up later. The question was, what to start with. She smiled and shrugged, looking down at her feet. "I have no idea what it's going to be. A part of me really wishes I knew, and another part doesn't want to think about it at all." She looked up at her best friend nervously. "Does it make me a wimp to say that? After what happened in the maze ..." Anna trailed off, not knowing how to explain herself. Sure, Ranger knew her better than most people did, but she still hadn't talked to him in ages and was tired of people judging her for her reaction to the tournament so far.

After what happened in the maze ..." he leaned forward slightly and shook his head. he reached his hand to rest it over hers and he squeezed it lightly. he didn't think anyone could say anna was a wimp. unless they were lucy, then there was every chance her sister would. "i will never think of you as a wimp anna" he said as he smiled lightly, trying to reassure her. he thought she'd be crazy to be worried about the next task. after the last one he could only imagine what the next two were going to be. she didn't really want to talk about the tournament. he could see that, he knew how to read her and he had been reading her for years so he knew. he decided to change the subject. "so i flew .. sort of." he said as he looked down at the water that was softly lapping at the side of the boat. she knew about his struggles since his accident, how hard it had been to not be able to force himself back on a broom and how hard it had been to come back from that.

Ranger's reaction was a complete relief. He shook his head and reached over to squeeze her hand a little breath and Anna felt herself release a breath she hadn't even realized she'd been holding. "Thanks Range. That means a lot to me," she said softly with a small smile. At least Ranger still understood her, probably because he knew her better than a lot of people did. They sat in silence for a few minutes and Anna didn't know what else to say. If she started explaining her thoughts on the tournament, she was going to lose it. Her emotions were too close to the edge right now and she didn't want this conversation to be her crying to Ranger, so she kept it in. Maybe another time. Finally, he spoke and Anna froze. She stared at him, not quite sure if he actually said what she thought he did. "You flew? What- how ... how was it?" Anna wasn't sure what to ask, what to say, so she tried to stay conservative with her questions. Hopefully he wouldn't mind her asking. Anna knew all about what happened, and she never would have asked otherwise, but he brought it up. Did that mean he was ready to talk about it?

@annelise "You flew? What- how ... how was it?" how was it? one of the worst five minutes of his life. of course it wasn't the actual worst but it was getting up there. bested only by his actual accident and what had happened to his parents. he rubbed the back of his neck as he lifted his eyes to look at her and shrugged his shoulders slightly. "well .. i was in the air for about three minutes. had a panic attack and almost passed out." he said, smiling slightly as he thought about how hard irina had fought to keep him in that moment with her and then gotten them both back to the ground. he owed her for that. he knew he'd have to do it gain though, he couldn't become an auror if he didn't fly. he needed to at least be able to function on the back of one. "i have to try it again though."

The expression on his face was enough to tell Anna that it hadn't been a particularly pleasant experience, but she waited for Ranger to answer her on his own. She didn't want to rush him or make him feel uncomfortable. She listened and nodded as he explained what happened. "Well three minutes is progress, isn't it? Were you flying your own broom or ... did someone go with you?" She was almost positive someone had, since he'd passed out but he was alright now. He still seemed nervous, which wasn't a surprise to her at all. He mentioned the fact that he needed to try again. "If you want I can try and help? Or at least go with you," she suggested, not sure how he would respond to her offer, but wanting him to know he wasn't alone all the same. He was one of her best friends. Of course she'd help him if she could. "I'm always here if you need me," she added with a shrug, hoping he didn't feel pressured. She knew he'd talk to her when he was ready.

@annelise "Well three minutes is progress, isn't it? Were you flying your own broom or ... did someone go with you?" he had to agree. three minutes was progress but still he had hoped for more. he nodded when she asked if someone had gone with him. well she hadn't been there specifically to help him but irina had been there when he'd needed help in the air. "yeah irina was there with me." he said with a slight smile. he'd been grateful to her in that moment. "If you want I can try and help? Or at least go with you," he'd like that. he'd like that a lot. anna was one of those few people that he knew he'd be able to count on no matter what. a lot of people came and went in life but he had a feeling anna would be one that would stick. "thanks. i'd like the help." he said, almost softly as he looked at his hands. he wasn't one for asking for help, not often. but he didn't feel this was something he could do on his own.

Anna gave a small smile when Ranger said that he hadn't been alone. Well that was definitely a good thing. If he had been alone maybe he would have gotten hurt, and that definitely wouldn't help him get over his fear at all. "I'm glad you weren't alone," she said with a smile. Anna nodded when he said that he would like her help. "Good! Do you care when we go? I mean, I'm not trying to rush you or anything, just curious." She tried to make light of the fact that he was asking for her help because she knew that wasn't easy for him. Anna and Ranger were quite similar that way. She reached forward and took one of his hands gently, squeezing it to comfort him. Then she leaned back and looked around them. "So how long do you want to be out here?" she watched the calm water of the lake all around them. It was so peaceful out here. She needed to come here more often.
