Anna thanked him for saying what he said about her poem, and he shrugged at her. It was just the truth, and he happened to put it in a way that sounded kind of nice – it wasn’t worthy of thanks. “No, there’s no more.” Oscar answered when Anna asked if he was done with the poem or not. It had taken up the better part of her arm, and she would probably have some explaining to do when she returned to the Gryffindor tower to shower, but that was of no matter. She seemed pleased with his work, and that was what was important, at least to Oscar.
“I would, if you want to.” Oscar said with a smile. Anna seemed to like the idea, which was good. It was hard to learn a language you didn’t particularly want to learn – that was why Oscar’s English had improved so much since he had become friends with Anna. He actually had a reason to want to speak it and learn more. She said that she still wanted him to read The Little Prince in English, and he nodded at that – it made sense to want to understand a story rather than just hear it in a different language.
Anna wrapped her arms around him, and it was only then that Oscar realized just how bad his shaking had been. It didn’t stop with Anna close to him, but it did get a little better, and Oscar burrowed himself into her. When he was scared and sad, he liked to get small, just as he had when he had come back from France and had to talk to her about the funeral. Anna assured him that she wasn’t an Auror, and Oscar couldn’t force out the words that he was thinking – even if she wasn’t an Auror now, she was going to be, some day, and then she could die. “Don’t leave me.” He whispered, his voice choked and his teeth chattering. How else was he supposed to tell her not to chase her dreams without being selfish? He couldn’t, and he was so frustrated, because as much as he loved not being alone, he loved Anna more, and even if she died, was it worth it if she died doing something that she loved? Oscar was twisted into one big knot over the predicament, and he didn’t know what to do.

Oscar said he was done writing on her arm and while Anna was disappointed at that a little- she liked the way it felt when he wrote on her arm- she was also excited to read the poem. Her eyes flitted over the words, skimming them quickly. The poem was adorable! He said it was something he read when he was first learning English, which meant that it wasn't about her, which was fine. Anna's poem wasn't about him either. And his was just right for him. Anna decided that when she got to the common room that night she was going to copy it on a piece of parchment for later. "I love it," she told him with a smile, sure he already knew that since her smile started while she was reading it.
Anna gave a sly smile, "I'd like for you to teach me," she tried to stay serious, but that wasn't easy. "Hopefully it'll turn out better than our history lesson, right?" She teased, giving in. At least he knew she was a tease. Oscar shouldn't be too surprised by this and he was normally a good sport so she didn't worry.
She didn't want to let her desire to be an auror cause a problem between them. They'd been having such a fun time getting to know one another and Anna wasn't ready to let that go. When Oscar moved even closer to her, Anna's hug tightened around him, despite his fierce shaking. She couldn't believe that he was responding this strongly just because she wanted to be an auror, but she was trying to understand. Amidst his shaking, he managed to ask her not to leave him and Anna felt her heart melt. Anna knew he was talking about her dying, that he was worried that something would happen to her, but his words still struck a chord in her. "It won't happen," she told him softly, even though there was no guarantee of it. Still, Anna believed in looking at the positive. Also, it was much more likely that he would leave first by going back to France. Anna froze at the thought. She only had a few months with him and that realization hurt more than she expected it to. "I won't leave you," she repeated more firmly. "Are you going to leave me?" Anna hadn't meant to actually say the words out loud, though they came out in barely a whisper. A part of her hoped he didn't hear the question, but the other part wondered what he would say if he did. Not that it was really a legitimate question for her to ask. Of course he was going to leave! He had to go home at the end of the year. England held nothing for him. Nothing but Anna and she had no idea if by the end of the year she would be enough of a reason for him to leave his home.

Anna took her time to read the entirety of the poem that was printed on her arm, and Oscar smiled when he watched Anna smile at the words. When she was done reading she said that she loved it. Oscar hadn’t expected any less, given her reaction to reading it, but it still made Oscar feel a little warm on the inside. “I am glad.” He told her, though his answering grin must have been just as telling as hers.
“If you want me to, I will teach you.” Oscar promised. He doubted that he’d be able to teach Anna the entire language, especially given her busy schedule, but it was a lot easier for someone to learn with a native speaker than to learn from a book or something else. If Anna could find someone else to speak French with, like another Beauxbatons student, that would help her progress even more. “It will turn out better!” Oscar insisted. For one thing, he was starting with a blank slate, rather than a slate that was sort of colored in, maybe. It was easier to build from the bottom than to add to something that someone else had already created.
Anna promised that she wouldn’t die, and Oscar just shook his head. She couldn’t promise that. Nobody could promise that. But she promised that she wouldn’t leave him, and that was a promise that Oscar was more willing to believe. She wouldn’t leave on purpose. Oscar stopped shaking altogether when he heard the next words slip out of Anna’s mouth. “I will never leave you, mamour.” If Oscar had still been entertaining any notion of returning to France after the school year was over, it disappeared with those little whispered words. He had to stay. He couldn’t leave Anna.

Oscar was happy and that was all Anna really needed. Any time when she could do something to make him smile was worth it in her book. The fact that his poem made her happy too was just an added bonus. She was liking getting to know him like this. It was different, but enjoyable too and she was interested to see what other questions they would come up with for one another.
Anna smiled as she got ready to tease him, "Well, I sure don't want anyone else trying to teach me French. That's not what you want either, right?" She wasn't sure how good she would do at learning another language, but with Oscar it wouldn't be a big deal. If she was bad, she didn't think he would make a big deal out of it, just like he hadn't made a big deal out of the dancing struggles. At his enthusiastic reply that this lesson would go better, Anna laughed. "I sure hope so because I didn't get any history out of that talk. I still liked it, of course, I just learned about you instead of things about France and England." Given the choice, she would have chosen to learn about Oscar over the countries, so at least she got what she really wanted as well.
She felt him shake his head and knew that he was still upset. He was still shaking and she didn't know what to do to help him other than what she was already doing. He froze- so he was finally not shaking- when the unintentional question escaped her and Anna closed her eyes even though she knew he couldn't see her face. She didn't know how he would react to that question. Her mouth fell open at his promise and Anna pulled back from their hug, desperate to search his eyes. He couldn't really mean that, could he? Wasn't he planning on going home at the end of school this year? "Oscar," she breathed, not really sure what to say to that. "Do you mean that? Never?" her question wasn't doubting his sincerity, and Anna was positive he would know that from her tone. She just wanted to make sure that she hadn't misheard him, and that he knew how she was interpreting his words that he would never leave her. She wanted to say something that would show that she was willing to make sacrifices for him as well, but how? Her mind searched for something to say but nothing was coming to mind so she just sat there, staring at him.

Oscar shook his head when Anna asked if he wanted anyone else to try to teach her French. It was going to be a bonding activity, just for the two of them, and the idea of someone else taking that chance from him made Oscar feel a little itchy. He smiled a little when Anna pointed out how far awry their history talk had gone. Maybe now that his grasp of English had improved substantially (as his level of comfort with Anna) they could try it again. Maybe not with French history, but a different history, one that wasn’t so…revolutionary. “I am more important than France or England.” He teased. Oscar might have had a big ego, but he wasn’t self-absorbed enough to believe that he was more important than entire countries. Well, maybe he was more important than tiny little countries that no one cared about…Oscar cut that train of thought off before he had the chance to accidentally stick his foot in his mouth by saying something like that out loud.
Anna seemed shocked by his promise never to leave her, so shocked that she released her hold on him. “I mean it.” Oscar replied in a low whisper. “I…have nothing in France but memories.” He had his mothers’ house, and he wasn’t sure he could bring himself to sell that, but all of the people he had loved were dead, and it didn’t seem right to return to a place that seemed to be nothing more than a graveyard. Some of the memories were good ones, yes, but Oscar would rather stay in England and make new memories with the new people he cared about – namely, Anna. “I could stay with you.” If it was still what Anna wanted at the end of the year, then Oscar would stay.

Oscar didn't even hesitate to shake his head when Anna asked if he wanted someone else to help teach her and Anna was glad. Honestly, the only reason she wanted to learn was so she could talk to him, so she didn't want to start that off talking with someone else. She smiled when he said that he was more important that France and England. "You are to me," she teased him back, though she knew that he would know she meant it. "I wanted to learn more about you anyway."
Anna knew her eyes were wide as she waited for him to answer her. She knew this probably shouldn't be such a big deal to her, but it was. When he confirmed that he meant it and that he didn't really have any reason to go back to France, Anna couldn't help the smile that started to cover her face. She leaned closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck so she could kiss him once more. She couldn't think of anything to say, so she figured she would just let him know how she felt through her kiss. She loved him and he wasn't going to leave her at the end of the year. She couldn't imagine anything that he could say or do that would make her happier.

Oscar was a little shocked when Anna said that he was actually more important than France or England. “Do not say that. My ego is already too large.” He said, only half-teasing. He didn’t want to get too self-obsessed and forget about the things that were important in his life. Right now Anna was really the only important thing, but Oscar also didn’t want her to get too big of an ego. “Well now you have learned more about me.” Oscar pointed out. She probably learned different things than she had originally anticipated, but it was still learning. Learning someone slowly was probably better than trying to learn everything about them at once, anyways.
Anna’s arms were around him again, and Oscar sighed softly. She kissed him, and he couldn’t think to do anything but kiss back. Here, in her arms, Oscar was safe, and he didn’t know why he would ever want to leave her. Saying that he wouldn’t, though, made it all the more real, and Oscar was glad that he had taken the leap and actually committed to staying in England.

Anna smiled when Oscar said he already had too large of an ego. "Well I'm not saying that everyone would agree with that. You're just more important to me." He couldn't be opposed to that, right? "And you have learned a little more about me," Anna said, agreeing with him. She knew that there was still lots that she didn't know about Oscar, but she was glad that she was getting to know him bit for bit. As she sat there with him, everything felt perfect to Anna. She was with her boyfriend, kissing the man that she loved, who just told her that he wouldn't leave her. How could things get better than that? For now, that was all she needed to know about him. She'd learn more later. @oscar ---the end---
