Victoire knew she had said the wrong thing, but she was being honest in her reaction. She should have thought before she spoke, though. But she could hear it in his words. He told her to just say what she had to say, so she did. "I'm just confused why it took so long to tell me, Roy. I thought we were best friends. I thought we shared this kind of stuff," she said, snapping back as well. Then, he was walking away from her, to put his paper in the printer. She took a deep breath, lifting both hands in surrender for a brief moment before speaking after him, "I don't want to fight," she said, but her tone was still slightly harsh.
She took another deep breath, willing herself to change her tone, "come on, Royal. I just don't want us to backtrack. I don't want- I'm overreacting, I know," she admitted, "and I'm happy for you. I am, I'm just trying to get past the upset part first," she explained.

Royal let out a breath through his nose when Vic said that she wasn’t sure why it had taken him so long to tell her. Saying that he hadn’t even intended to tell her in the first place probably wasn’t the way to go at this point in time. “Jonah hasn’t even told his family yet.” Royal informed Victoire tartly. “It’s kind of a secret thing, since we’re sure how Jacob will react and I’m not exactly out of the closet, you know.” Again, there wasn’t a good way to say that. Victoire didn’t have this problem, because everyone knew that she was going to end up with Teddy, so it wasn’t exactly a surprise when she said they had gotten back together. “You’re not doing a very good job of it.” Royal commented drily when Vic said she didn’t want to fight. Because here they were, fighting.
He didn’t believe that she was happy for him, really, because everything she was doing was pointing to the opposite. “Can’t help you out there.” He said flatly when she said she was trying to get past being upset. What was he supposed to say, that it was absolutely fine that she was unhappy with him for being in a relationship? Nope, not going to happen.

Jonah hadn't told his family yet? Why were they waiting so long? He said it was kind of a secret thing and she nodded, starting to put it together. He said that he wasn't exactly out of the closet and she nodded again. Royal wasn't sure if he would be accepted for dating a male. He said she wasn't doing a good job of not fighting, as if she didn't already know that, and then also said he couldn't help her not be upset.
"Hey, if his family doesn't know and it's supposed to be this big secret" she said, pausing to try and take the hurt out of her voice again, "then I guess I have no right knowing any sooner than now, either. So it's fine," she wanted to mean it, really, but she still felt kind of bad. Especially since her and Royal had been working side by side for all this time...
"I hope you guys are happy, Roy. Are you?" that would make all this better, if he really was happy.

Victoire still didn’t seem happy with his decision, but at least she seemed to be understanding it more. Royal could settle for that, he supposed. He’d prefer if she didn’t get so caught up on something like how long it had been since he told her, but grudging acceptance was better than denial of any sort. “I didn’t mean to…I don’t know, fool you?” Royal said with a sigh. He ran his fingers through his hair, glancing sideways at Victoire. Him keeping his relationship with Jonah a secret wasn’t supposed to hurt people. It was just supposed to let his love for Jonah grow without worrying what everyone else would think of him – of them. Victoire asked him if he was happy, and Royal sighed. “I am.” He admitted. Knowing that Victoire would want an explanation for the sigh, Royal continued to talk. “I just…wonder if I’m supposed to be in a relationship now. Or if I’m still, I don’t know.” He sighed again. “Scarred?” Physically and emotionally, Royal wasn’t sure what he ought to be doing. He was swinging back and forth between two extremes – staying with Jonah forever or leaving him for just as long.

He said he didn't mean to fool her, and she knew that was true. She knew he hadn't meant to keep silent in a hurtful way... even if it still felt hurtful. He said he was happy, though, and that was the most important thing. He wondered if he was supposed to be in a relationship or if he was still 'scarred'. Victoire bit her lip, nodding just slightly. "I think that... being with someone can help with that scarring," she suggested, "but I took a good amount of time to realize that. I think it's okay if you give yourself the time to be happy, but accept that you're not always going to be, you know? I just hope Jonah can accept that. That you aren't... completely healed. That, in a way, and not to sound morbid.... but that you never will be. I don't want anyone to invalidate that, Roy," she said that last part firmly, almost aggressively.

Victoire was really great at giving advice, Royal thought to himself. Maybe that was why she was chosen as the Minister. She said that being with someone could help with being scarred, and Royal just nodded. Then his best friend continued on to say that it was okay to be happy, but also that he wasn’t always going to be happy. “I don’t know if he does get that.” Royal said with a shrug. He didn’t mean it as an insult to Jonah, but it was true. “He seems to have this idea that love conquers all, you know? And that’s great, and love can conquer a lot, but like you said…” He sighed, unexpectedly melancholy at the idea of repeating what Victoire had already said. “I’m never gonna be whole again. And I’m not always going to be happy for that same reason.” His dad was dead, and that wasn’t ever going to go away. And while scars could fade, ones that big would never disappear completely. There were days he broke down and he didn’t know why, but that was okay, because his dad was dead, and that was the sort of thing that happened. Grieving never ended.

Vics eyebrows furrowed as Royal said that he wasn't sure if Jonah knew that Roy couldn't be happy all of the time. Love conquers all was a common concept, but not one that Victoire agreed with. She frowned a little as Royal sighed, petering off his sentence before saying how he was never going to be whole again. "I... don't mean to sound depressing," she started slowly, taking a slow step toward him, "but I don't anyone is really whole. Not until all our work is... completed, I guess," she didn't mean to get into afterlife talk, so she tried not to segway into that too much. "It's just nice to have people to fill some of the empty space. Like you do for me, for example," she said, reaching her hand out for his hand. "And love doesn't conquer all, I don't think... but it sure as hell is helpful."

Victoire said that she didn’t mean to sound depressing, which was, of course, an indicator to Royal that what she was about to say was in fact extremely depressing. She was right, though, that no one was ever really whole. They were born that way, maybe, but then the rest of their lives had bits and pieces of them chipped away until they were only a fraction of who they once were. Victoire said that it was good to have people to fill in the empty space, and Royal accepted her hand, squeezing it tightly. “Is now a good time to remind you that you’re my best friend, and I love you very much?” Royal said, blinking innocently. She filled in his empty spaces, too. Royal still wondered sometimes, the path his life would have taken if he had never met Victoire, or if he had never reunited with her following his father’s death. Everything pointed to that path being an extremely dark one, but he could never quite find the words to thank Victoire for all the things she didn’t do.

Royal took his hand, asking if it was a good time to remind her that he was her best friend and he loved her. She bit her lip, her eyes watering as she squeezed his hand and nodded, "It's always a good time," she meant to joke, but her voice cracked. "I love you very much, too," she returned, tugging on his hand and stepping forward to wrap her arms around him in a tight hug.
It was nice to know that no matter what they fought about or what was happening in their lives, in the world, that they had each other. She had lost that for a while, and she was determined never to lose it again. She would never let him slip away from her and his happiness was in her top priority list. She knew that her advice wasn't the most happy go lucky or anything, but Vic never was that way. She was honest, especially with her best friend.
