With a deep breath and a heavy heart, James exited the castle and slowly dragged his feet down to the pond. It was officially the first full day at Hogwarts. He had found himself some free time during lunch to go and collect his thoughts by the lake. Usually, James would be in the Great Hall right now saying hello to all of his friends that he missed at the feast last night. He didn't even go to the feast last night. He spent the night in the hospital wing, not sleeping, hardly being able to get the sight of that muggleborn girl out of his mind. One minute he was enjoying his ride to Hogwarts, excited to finally be a seventh year. He would soon be exploring the world like he had always wanted to do. And in between some joke that one of his best friends was telling, he saw some figure glide swiftly past his compartment. His head turned suddenly and before he could tell his friends to be quiet, the train came to an abrupt halt. He and his friends fell out of their seats and the lights went out. "Stay here," he had said. Then he got up and left the compartment. After a few steps, he saw a green light come out from a compartment ahead of him and heard a young girl let out an ear piercing scream. He turned around to see if anyone was coming from behind because at that moment he was alone and panic immediately began rushing through him. He knew enough about curses and spells to know what such a green light and a scream like that meant.
No one was coming out of their compartments, except one of his best friends. "James!" He heard his friend call, but slowly James was walking toward the compartment where the green light had been. He slid open the door and there in front of him was the lifeless body of an eleven year old girl, staring up at him. She was in her sorting robes. Not yet even sorted into a house. He had remembered seeing her muggle parents load her onto the train, as he had helped her good-looking mother lift a heavy trunk onto the platform. He sunk to his knees. She was muggleborn. She was killed.James was so shocked that he couldn't attend the feast. He had just seen his first dead body. How was he supposed to sleep? Or eat, for that matter? That poor girl was murdered. And by the looks of it, it was for her bloodline. But no one seemed to believe James when he said that he saw a green light from her compartment. James was furious. As he finally made his way to the edge of the lake, he began to think about all of his father's years at Hogwarts. How he had seen many die, including his own parents. How his father was never believed when he said Voldemort was back. James felt like his father did then, now. Why wouldn't anyone believe him? James felt his bottom lip tremble as he stared out over the Black Lake. The sun was shining overhead and it was really a beautiful September day but James felt far from beautiful. He felt absolutely dreadful. He let himself fall to the ground as he pulled his legs up to his chest, hiding his face. He told himself he would not cry. He would not cry. Just as he felt the first round of tears for that poor, dead, muggleborn girl, he took a deep breath, swallowing any sadness he felt. He couldn't cry. Not now. He looked up at the lake once more, and as he did he faintly heard the sound of footsteps in the grass behind him. He knew he wasn't alone anymore but he didn't feel the need to hide his vulnerability. He knew who this person was without even looking at them. He closed his eyes. He was still embarrassed to show any sign of tears, even in front of one of his longest best friends. "Hey, Al," he said hoarsely, finally turning to look up at her and forcing his famous charming smile. tagged: @alice words: 705 outfit: robes notes: poor bby |

You leave me here wondering if I'll ever know How much you care, or how much you don't If you're going to be somebody's last time, baby be mine. 929 words house robes james “ Only twenty-four hours into her seventh year and already it was a mess. Alice had expected this year to be a breeze after her O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s, but after yesterday she could just tell that this year was going to be a lot different for many different reasons. One thing was certain; something happened on the train yesterday. Alice wasn't sure what happened, or how, but a student was dead. Alice's best friend, James Potter, was the first on the scene. Rumors had already been spreading like wildfire, but of course what else is to be expected of the students of Hogwarts? About ten times already today, Alice had heard several different accounts of what people thought had happened last night on the train. "James Potter did it." "The girl just had an asthma attack and died." "Somebody snuck onto the train." "They apparated!" "She's a mudblood, who cares?" All of these stories infuriated Alice. Especially the ones about James. Alice knew that James had been with her in their compartment with two other friends. James did seem distracted by something just before the train had stopped, but had been his regular old self just before he had gotten up to see what was going on. Seconds after he left the compartment, the green light flashed through the compartment and the girl screamed. That was when Patrick, their other friend, stuck his head out of the compartment and yelled for James. Alice had froze. Something was obviously wrong and there were hardly any adults around to help them. After James had not replied, Patrick had gone after him. From that point, Alice had gathered that James had just knelt down at the girl's side. He was shocked, after all who wouldn't be? James always had hated the prejudices against muggleborns, and so had Alice. Growing up, their parents had taught them to accept everyone regardless of bloodline. So disregard Alice did. Unless you were a big-headed Slytherin who hated muggleborns. Then Alice was an outright bitch. After they had arrived at the school, Alice had not seen James. She kept glancing around the Great Hall, looking at the Gryffindor table for a sign of him. Every now and then she would make eye contact with Patrick, who just sort of grimly shook his head. James was no where to be found. Alice had more of a motive to be looking for him other than just because he was one of her best friends. The two had grown up together, but Alice felt something deeper for James. Perhaps it had stemmed from their years of acting as such close friends, like brother and sister, as they were the eldest two within the Potter-Longbottom gang, but Alice loved James. It wasn't just some school crush, either. Alice really, truly, and deeply loved James. She could never admit that to him, though. She could never admit that it hurt a little every time she saw him chasing after some Ravenclaw girl or snogging another Hufflepuff in an empty corridor. She hated seeing him do that. But it made James happy, and that was all that mattered to Alice. Alice had gotten word that late morning from Pat that James had been in the hospital wing all night. He had shown to a few of their classes, because they had most together, but he hadn't seemed right. Alice could tell he was putting on a show and not acting his cheery, normal egotistical self and back talking the teachers, which was something Alice regularly found amusing. When Alice went to the Great Hall for lunch, she had immediately noticed that James was not there and she turned around on her heel, determined to find him. It was a very nice day, and Alice had a strong feeling that she would find him out on the grounds. So she crossed the Entrance Hall at a determined pace and swung through the double doors that led to the grounds. Alice scanned the area as she walked along. He wasn't in the courtyard, or near the pond. Or even the Care of Magical Creatures Hut. But then, she saw a figure down by the lake. She watched for a moment as the figure, obviously male, just stood out overlooking the Black Lake. It was lunch time so it was a little odd for anyone to be out here and not inside eating. Then Alice watched the male fell to the ground and seemed to be burying his face in his knees. The brown curls on his head tussled slightly as he did so. Immediately Alice set off toward him, but at a walk. She knew it was who she was looking for. As she stopped just two feet away from him, Alice heard James Potter, the love of her life, take in a deep breath. She immediately knew he was trying not to cry and that broke Alice's heart. Her face fell, and she herself tried to fight back any tears that were trying to make themselves known. "Hey, Al," he had said. Of course he knew it was her. He always did. "James," she breathed, shaking her head at him. She looked down at the grass next to James and after a moment of silence, she sat down beside him. "I'm so sorry." Alice didn't know what to say. James hadn't done anything, but this ordeal was obviously hurting him. And anything that hurt James in this way hurt Alice. She couldn't bear seeing him vulnerable like this. ” notes @james I reference a guy name Patrick, that is my Gryffindor 7th year that I will be making soon. He's a bff of James :]

James was definitely not the type of guy to cry. Ever. Even alone. Few things had made him cry in his life. He could count the amount of times he has cried on one hand. He has never experienced death. No family member has died, no friend. He knew the Minister but not on a personal level. He didn't even know the first year's name but somehow he felt like he knew her. Somehow he felt like he could have prevented her death. He was right there. Right outside of her compartment. Just a few feet away. He feels responsible for some reason and he figured that was why he was feeling so down. But this was his seventh year. His final year at Hogwarts. He could not be spending it like this. James shrugged as Alice sat down, sensing her sadness. "Don't be," he said, looking back out over the lake. "I guess I know there is nothing I really could of done... I was just the only one that was right there, ya know?" He looked back at Alice. James knew that she would understand. She always did. If there was one thing in his life he was thankful for, it was his relationship with Alice Longbottom. Childhood friends since the diaper days. Fighting crime against bugs in the backyard and bullying their younger siblings into playing bad guys vs. good guys. He and Alice were a team. James loved Alice, but like a sister. She was the only girl in the entire school that he had never once tried to flirt with, with the exception of his family of course. But to James, the Longbottoms were family. He would do anything for Alice or her brothers. After a few moments of understanding silence, James turned to look at her, raising a mock suspicious eyebrow. "Hey now, why aren't you eating lunch?" He pretended to scold her. While Alice sometimes liked to play mother to him and his girl habits, James loved to poke fun at her and make fun of her own habits. Namely her bookworm habits and her small figure. "Haven't I told you that you need to eat more?" The corner of his mouth curled into a smile. Already, being around Alice had him in a better mood. This year was going to be the best, he was sure of it. What was one bump in the road? Even if it was a mysterious death? tagged: @alice words: 417 outfit: robes notes: poor bby |

You leave me here wondering if I'll ever know How much you care, or how much you don't If you're going to be somebody's last time, baby be mine. 466 words house robes james “ One thing Alice prided herself in when it came to she and James' relationship was that she could tell when he was hiding something from her or lying. In this instance, Alice knew James was a lot more sad than he was letting on but if James wanted to keep those feelings at bay, Alice figured it would be best for him. She didn't want to push him. She watched him as he spoke. Nothing of the sort had ever really happened to Alice either, but she understood fully how he felt. She normally did understand exactly how James felt in any situation. The two of them were very real with one another. They told each other everything, which is probably why it hurt Alice so badly every time she saw him. She felt that she could never tell him how she truly felt because he wouldn't reciprocate those feelings. She's a realist, she knows he never would. But regardless, she understood how he felt in this horrible situation and the amount of sympathy and sadness she had for him was overwhelming. "I know," she trailed off quietly looking out over the lake to avoid his eye contact. The two of them sometimes communicated without even speaking. They just knew one another so well. That's what happens when you grow up together. It was no surprise that James tried to turn the mood around. "Haven't I told you that you need to eat more?" He pretended to scold her and Alice turned back to face him with a smirk. He always did make fun of her size. Alice only ate during meals, she never snacked. She was usually just never hungry unless it was meal time and James made fun of her for that sometimes. All in good jest, though. "Shut up, Potter," she pushed him over playfully. This was why Alice loved her best friend; he could really change the mood of any situation no matter how sad or angry. Even if it was himself that was upset, he would have the mood changed to something more cheerful in a minute. Alice admired James for that, because of him she was normally in a good mood. James Potter had an air about him that just radiated happiness, confidence, and cheerfulness. Perhaps it was his own cheery and joking demeanor that made his mood so contagious. Regardless, it was obvious, even to some outsiders, that Alice was typically just always in a better mood around him. "I came down here looking for you, James," she said. Her left eyebrow turned up in concern now. "I was worried about you, you know," she said. Alice typically was always worried about James. He was prone to trouble, after all he was a Potter. How could she not worry? ” notes @james real talk with Jamie & Al

Another great thing about James's best friend? She didn't ask questions. If James was ever feeling a little blue or down in the dumps, he could tell Al could sense that. She would sympathize with him maybe a moment, but she didn't poke or prod him for questions about how he felt, like most other girls would, especially in such an instance as this particular one. That's why Alice was so different to him. James loved girls. They were his favorite subject. If James wasn't pulling some prank on an unsuspecting Slytherin, he was probably out trying to get with a girl. Many of the girls in school had had the privelige, or so James thinks, of being with him. Others rebuffed him because of said reputation. Alice, however, was the only girl he had never tried to flirt with. Many of his friends had asked why, but when prompted to tell his guy friends why he couldn't think of Alice that way he, like many other males, laugh it off and say "because we're just friends." It was true, though. Alice was like his sister. James didn't think he could ever be able to have romantic feelings for her. To him, that was like having romantic feelings for Lily or Rose. Gross. As Alice told him to shut up, James accepted her push with a wide, cheesy grin. He loved to make Alice smile, even in serious and sad situations. It was how he made himself smile, and today he really needed that. "Or what, Longbottom?" He began in a mocking tone. "You'll stone me to death with one of your books?" James bit his lip as he tried not to laugh at himself. Then of course, Alice was his best friend. A motherly type of figure, if you would. She was his Ginny Potter away from home. James was well aware that if Alice was truly worried about him, she would definitely make it known. James didn't mind so much, though. In a way, he appreciated that Alice was like his mother away from home. Sometimes he needed the discipline. "Yeah, yeah," his disappeared and he squinted out over the Black Lake. The Giant Squid was lazily moving his tentacles about above the water. "I know you were," he said. He avoided her eye contact once more. James really didn't want to think about the first year anymore. "Because you love me, I mean it's hard not to," he shrugged, the corner of his lips turning up in a small smirk once more. "Who doesn't love me?" He declared, his arms stretched out as he jumped up to stand now. tagged: @alice words: 450 outfit: robes notes: i'm just in love with these two |

Alice playfully glared at James. "Yeah, I just might," she let out a little laugh. "You're lucky I don't have any with me, James," she watched him as he bit his lip. One thing Alice tried not to think about a lot was how handsome James was. It never really hit her until her sixth year. She had always loved James as a person, she finds him admirable. But he was an extremely good looking boy as well. Alice always tried to push that to the back of her mind though, so as to not feel shallow. Almost immediately Alice regretted saying anything about being worried about James. She hated what this was doing to James now. What if things got worse? What would he do? Alice wouldn't be able to bear it if something happened to James, of his own accord or someone else's. "I knew you were," James said. And at this Alice forced a small smile at him. Alice rolled her eyes then as James started goofing off again. "Who doesn't love me?" He said, jumping up. Alice watched him, trying to hide her admiration for him. "Yes, James, who doesn't?" She grinned, crossing her legs now. She watched him stretch out his arms. The sunlight was shining at the highest point in the sky, James was smiling, and Alice never wanted this very moment to end. ” notes @james Me too <3 Sorry this one is short!

"Lucky?" He said with another smirk. "I'd rather say flattered, because the book won't be getting more attention than me!" He was kidding of course, but he couldn't resist poking fun at Alice for being such a little bookworm. He was good at making sure he was obviously being playful. He would never want to seriously hurt Al's feelings. He wouldn't dream of it. Not only because he cared for her and didn't want to hurt her, but also because Al was a lot smarter than him and probably knew a lot more curses to make him wish he never had hurt her. At Alice's smile, James's own only grew wider. He was truly so happy to have a friend like Alice, one who never pried. James crossed his arms indignantly as he looked down at Alice. "Uh, everyone? Gee, don't you listen, Alice?" His tone playfully sarcastic. He reached his hand out to her, pulling her up off of the ground and into a giant bear hug. He held her closely in a friendly brotherly embrace. "Thanks for always being such a great friend, Al," he said softly. James knew he didn't have to remind her of how grateful he was, but it had indeed been a while since he had made it known how thankful he truly was for her. tagged: @alice words: 227 outfit: robes notes: i'm just in love with these two |

You leave me here wondering if I'll ever know How much you care, or how much you don't If you're going to be somebody's last time, baby be mine. 337 words house robes james “ Alice glared at James for his comment about the book. Whenever James made fun of her reading habits, she usually knew just what to say about him to push his buttons as well. It normally had something to do with his over inflated ego, but like James, Alice did it all in good fun. "You can't even handle a book getting more attention than you?" Her eyebrows raised at him, a small smile on her face. "You truly are the king of big-headedness," she said, matter of factly. At James's cheeky response, she couldn't help but widen her smile once more. It was near impossible to ever be sad around James. That was just another reason why Alice loved him. James offered her his hand then, and she took it. James surprised her suddenly when he pulled her up and close to him, embracing her in a hug. It was completely platonic, Alice could tell that much, but it was also a loving and brotherly hug, like one she would give to one of her younger brothers before leaving them for any amount of time. "Thanks for always being such a great friend, Al," he said. As they embraced, Alice felt her fingers twitch. She moved her hands around his back in hopes that he wouldn't notice the twitch. As much as it meant to Alice that he felt that way, it was also painful to hear. She wanted so much for this hug to be more than a friendly hug. As she stood there in his arms, she leaned her chin down upon his shoulder. She didn't want to move, and it didn't occur to her that she should move. So she stayed there with her arms locked around her best friend. She didn't say anything, but at the same time she knew she didn't really have to. She also didn't really want to. She didn't want to interrupt this moment, especially to respond with something stupid like "you too, pal." ” notes @james Oh, Alice is torturing herself! (I love it)

James raised an eyebrow at Alice in mock offense. "Hey," he said, as if she had just offended him in the deepest way possible. "That's your highness to you, Longbottom," he said, then wiped the sarcasm off of his face with a grin. James had never considered Alice in a romantic way, but the thought about "what if" he had had crossed his mind once or twice. Things would be different, that much was certain. But those few times he had thought "what if" he ended up getting grossed out, like he was thinking about his sister. He loved Alice, but like a sister. He didn't think it could be anything more, considering their history together. Alice's hands tightened around James's back and he grinned into her shoulder, burying his face momentarily into her dark blonde hair. He squeezed her tightly, then decided to let go but before he could he noticed briefly that she wasn't making any movement to let go. Slowly, James came out of the tight hug. He just grinned widely at her, happy to have her. "I love ya, Al," he said, placing his right hand on her left shoulder in a friendly, brotherly way. tagged: @alice words: 203 outfit: robes notes: i'm just in love with these two |

She knew he didn't mean it the way she wanted him to, but he still meant it, Alice knew that. It was all just friendly. Friends. Friendly friends is all they could ever be. And as James pulled away, Alice felt herself wanting to stop him and pull him closer again. Instead, she surprised herself when she just forced a little smile. "I love you, too, James," she said. Why couldn't she just see him as a normal friend? A brother? Why did she have to go and get feelings for him! Curse her female feelings! She looked at him with a less than cheerful look now, but was able to force a convincing enough smile. "Hey, why don't you go get food or something? You've got to be starving..." she figured she wasn't being convincing enough. "Your highness," she added, and she knew that would convince him otherwise. She figured he wouldn't notice her sadness under her forced smiles. ” notes @james omg this is poop, sorry!! [/s][/div][/div] [/div]

As James stood there smiling at his best friend like a fool, he felt his stomach grumble. Why had he decided to skip dinner again last night? He cursed himself mentally, for it seemed Alice may have heard. He of course didn't know that she was trying to shoo him off so he wouldn't see her true feelings. Not that he probably would have anyway. James was always kind of blind to those sort of things. "I am quite hungry, as a matter of fact," James nodded, his mind suddenly full of thoughts of a turkey and mashed potatoes. When Alice called him by his "royal name," he smirked. "Ah, my loyal subjects," he said, sticking his nose up in the air in a joking matter. "They treat me well." He looked back at Alice as he began to back up, toward the castle. "Gonna see if I can go and catch a snack from the elves," he nodded up at the castle. "I'll catch ya later, Al," he smiled widely at her and gave a little wave before turning around and heading up to the castle in a jog. tagged: @alice words: 195 outfit: robes notes: i'm just in love with these two |

You leave me here wondering if I'll ever know How much you care, or how much you don't If you're going to be somebody's last time, baby be mine. 229 words house robes james “ Although Alice loved James, she was thankful for his sometimes clueless demeanor when it came to girls. She was glad he couldn't see through her act and tell how sad she was for James. About the girl and how she loved him. She looked down at the ground, avoiding James' eyes as he agreed that he was, indeed, hungry. She knew her mentioning of food would trigger some response out of him. He was a teenage boy, after all. She forced a smile as he said he was going to go find something to eat, indeed leaving her alone to her own thoughts. She gave a little wave to him as he walked off. And so Alice was alone. She turned around to face the lake by herself now. She let out a sad sigh. Alice wasn't one to cry over such a thing. She had been in love with her best friend long enough that she was over crying about and feeling utterly sorry for herself. She was just sad now that she could never tell James. It would change everything. He could never know. After a few more moments of battling this thought, Alice, too, decided to head back up to the castle. Just in time for her next class, where she would indeed be sitting next to the same boy and battling these thoughts once more. ”
