“Did you just ‘yeah yeah’ me, Hugo Weasley?” Xan asked, arching an eyebrow. “Be careful with your next words, or you may find yourself without a girlfriend.” It was all teasing, off course, but Xan didn’t like being brushed off, even by Hugo. Of course, she also insisted that people couldn’t dote on her just because of her illness, so maybe she was being too finicky. Xan smiled when Hugo said that was the reason that she was deciphering the pictures, and then proceeded to show him how to make the next two folds. Xan was beginning to see how the paper would eventually begin to look like a bird, which was an exciting prospect. “I will tell you.” Xan said. “But I don’t think that’ll happen…Well, I hope not.” Besides, the folding seemed to be going well this time around, and it was just her first try! Xan was hopeful that her others would be even better.

Hugo was not particularly surprised by Xan's reaction. He merely shrugged as he smiled his mischievous smile, "You teased me, so I teased you back. Seems like a fair trade to me." Logic. Maybe that would help the situation? Not that it was dire in the first place. He knew how Xan felt about him. There was no way she'd really be breaking up with him for something like that. Hugo watched closely and did his best to follow the next few folds. At least the paper was starting to look like something now, instead of just shapes. What it looked like, though, he couldn't say. "I'm not saying I think it'll happen, just let me know if it does. I'll take any excuse to come down and visit you, you know." Not that he needed excuses, but sometimes they were nice. "How many more steps are there?" He asked curiously. Hugo would try to look at the paper, but he had no idea what step they were on, so that wouldn't be any help.

Xan both loved and hated it when Hugo used logic. She loved it because it meant that she was rubbing off on him, and hated it because it meant that she couldn’t argue with him. Logic was her modus operandi, after all, due to her Ravenclaw roots. Trying to argue emotions with anyone in Ravenclaw was frustrating, even if they were the less bookish type. She smiled at Hugo when he said that he wasn’t expecting any of her cranes to turn out poorly, but that he wanted her to know that he’d be more than willing to serve as her delivery boy if the need ever did arise. Hugo asked how many steps there were left, and Xan glanced down at the book quickly. “Two!” She chirped happily, completing the first step right after she said that. “This is it!” Xan said. She made the last fold, and then set the paper crane on the bed in front of her. It definitely wasn’t as pretty as the one in the book, but it wasn’t bad for a first attempt.

Xan said that there were only two more steps and Hugo let out a small cheer of excitement. Why hide it? She knew he wasn't really good at this. His paper crane looked like hers, but definitely wasn't as well shaped. She was better at folding, apparently. He watched carefully as she did the last two steps, then he turned to his own paper and copied her moves as well as he could. When he was done, he couldn't help but laugh. Hugo placed his crane besides hers and it was easy to see who created which one. "I think you're better than me at this," he told her with a small smile. "But still, not bad for a first try." Hugo was excited. He was going to surprise her when one day she woke up to see double the cranes around her in the hospital wing. Or maybe he'd find another way to show her the cranes he was going to make. "You ready to do all the other ones?" Hugo teased lightly.

Hugo seemed to be even more relieved than Xan was that they had finished their crane expedition, and Xan really couldn’t blame him, given that he had had a harder time with the crane construction. His was noticeable sloppier than hers, but Xan didn’t care. Hugo’s crane was rugged, and kind of…charming. It had personality! Xan knew that sometimes people said that sort of thing to make an awful artist feel better about their work, but she did think that Hugo’s crane was indicative of who he was as a person. “I like yours.” Xan said with a smile. “They can be friends together!” Xan suggested, scooping up the two cranes and placing them in a place of honor on her bedside table. Hugo asked if she was ready to do the other ones, and Xan wrinkled her nose. “One down, nine hundred ninety nine to go.” She joked.

Xan said that she loved his crane and Hugo couldn't keep himself from laughing. She was definitely exaggerating, but he didn't mind. She could compliment his messy crane all she wanted, but he still liked it. The first of a thousand cranes he was going to make for her. Hugo had a pretty good memory, he was pretty sure he would remember how to make it. And if not, he could find another book with steps to guide him through the hard parts. Now that he'd done it once, he'd probably be able to figure it out from a book. "Well someone has to," he teased with a smile, laughing again when she picked up both of the cranes and put them on her bedside table. "We should sign them," he told her. "So we don't ever forget that these were the first, the ones we made together." Hopefully that wasn't giving away his plan to make them on his own.

Hugo suggested the idea of signing the birds, which Xan loved. Since she was planning on making a lot of birds, it would be easy to lose the first two in the mess, and that would be a shame. “We probably should have signed them before we folded them up.” Xan said, biting her lip.. Getting them to hold still while writing on a wing might prove hard. Unless…Xan bent one of the wings of her bird down further so that it was a flat surface. Yes, that would do, and she could just bend the wing back up when she was done. It was a simple solution, considering the problem had been simple in the first place. “I’ll sign mine first, since I finished first.” She told Hugo with a smile. She reached for a quill, and carefully placed her signature on the right wing of the bird. “Sign the same place I did.” Xan suggested. “So they match.” Two of a kind, just like Xan and Hugo were.

Xan seemed to like his idea of signing the birds and Hugo was glad. He didn't really expect her to think that it was a waste of time or ridiculous, but she didn't. He should've expected that, but he didn't. He shrugged when she commented that they should have signed them before they started. "I wasn't thinking that far ahead," Hugo admitted with a smile, knowing that she hadn't either. He watched as she bent one of the wings so it was flat and she could write on it. Then he followed her example, and directions and ended up signing on the wing. Then he folded his back up and placed it next to hers, smiling over at her. "They match," he told her with a smile. He looked at the clock and frowned. He needed to go and practice some charms, but he didn't want to tell Xan that. "I'm sorry, but I have to go Xan." He said after a few minutes, bending over and kissing her forehead, "At least you have something to do now, right?" Hugo asked with a smile. "Good luck with your cranes."

Xan smiled when Hugo said that he hadn’t been thinking that far ahead. “A clairvoyant, not thinking about the future? There’s a joke in there somewhere.” Xan wasn’t sure she could find the joke herself, but the irony of it was enough to be funny to the Ravenclaw. After Hugo signed his bird, Xan picked it up so she could trace her finger over his name, smile still on her face. Hugo said they matched, and Xan nodded. “Kind of like us.” Xan said. She and Hugo actually weren’t anything like their cranes – Xan was the one who was a little battered, for one thing – but they were quite the pair anyways, just like their little bits of folded paper. Hugo said that he had to go, and when he bent to kiss her forehead, Xan kissed his cheek in return. “No need to apologize. Have fun doing whatever you’re going to do.” She said. “Goodnight, love.”

Hugo smiled and chuckled softly at her joke. "That's me, the walking joke," he commented, taking it all in stride. He nodded when she commented that the two of them matched. He thought they did, for sure. Xan made him a better person, made him happy and he hoped he did the same for her. "See you soon, Xan," he muttered as he walked toward the door. Honestly, he'd probably be back here tomorrow before breakfast. He could never stay away from her too long. ---the end--- @xanthippe
