Hermione had the Morning Prophet in front of her, coffee in hand. On the front page there was a photo of Desirae Rousseau, with the headline proclaiming her death yesterday evening. Hermione herself had selected Claire, and at the suggestion of Theodorus Nott, Abigail Shacklebolt to raid her hiding place and take her, dead or alive; obviously the Rousseau girl had had no intention of coming alive. She had invited Claire to come to her office that morning, before returning to the Auror office, to brief her on what happened. Theo would be arriving later; it would be up to him whether his identity was revealed to the young Auror or not. Hermione rubbed her eyes tiredly and took a large sip of coffee. She hadn't slept more than a wink last night, knowing what was going on at those moments. Finally, when Claire had sent word that it was done, she had been able to manage a few hours. Victoire would be briefed of course after she had heard from Claire and Theo; it would certainly be a long day at the office. A knock at her door made Hermione come out of her reverie. "Enter," she called, knowing who was on the other side. Claire Evangeline Slater first! @theodorus

Claire thought she'd feel different after taking a life. That something would change inside her, knowing that she'd killed another human being. But she felt nothing. Absolutely nothing. She'd run through the events over and over again, and still felt nothing. Raising her wand, casting spell after spell. Hell, Claire hadn't even hesitated when Desirae made it clear she wouldn't be taken alive. She'd cast the spell without even stopping to think, just knew in that moment that she was going to stop Desirae no matter what. In fact, she felt so little that she almost felt.... cold. Callous. Claire had done her job. She'd stopped a murderer and terrorist. Why should she feel anything about it?
The morning after, and she was asked to meet with the Senior Undersecretary to Minister Weasley. Hermione Granger Weasley. Claire didn't think she was in trouble in any way. She'd done exactly what she was told. She'd stayed perfectly within her restrictions, never crossing a line. It had been a clean and justified act. But... meeting with someone so high up wasn't normal. Did it have to do with Desirae's standing with Elaine Dupree? She couldn't be sure. So, with her typical punctuality, Claire arrived bright and early at the office they'd be meeting and lightly rapped on the door. Hearing the command to enter, Claire turned the doorknob and entered, just as stoic as she felt and nodded a nod to her superior. "Ma'am."

Hermione watched as the young woman entered and stood stoically; just twenty-one and already responsible for the death of a terrorist. It was both an accomplishment and a scar on the soul; during the Second Great Wizarding War, Hermione had not intentionally killed anyone but Death Eaters and their supporters had died second-hand from her own curses. She knew it would be easier, far easier, to shut out all the emotions and feelings from last night, but she needed to hear about it from Claire’s own lips what had happened. “Have a seat Ms. Slater,” she said, gesturing to the squashy armchair in front of her desk. She had hand selected Claire from the Aurors for this task because at the moment, Claire to her was the most capable Auror on the force. Obviously, she had been correct in her assumption as the job had been done; she had not expected Desirae to come out of this alive. “I would like, if you are able, to tell me about last night,” she said slowly, folding her hands in front of her and watching Claire carefully. Hermione had specifically cleared her schedule for this morning in order to give the young Auror all the time she needed to explain everything; Theo would be showing eventually as well, though in typical Theo fashion he had not given her an exact time. Claire nodded as her superior requested she take a seat and motioned to the spot in particular. "Thank you." She crossed the small office and sat on the edge of the chair. This was official business, she'd rather not sink back into the obviously comfortable chair. This wasn't a meeting for fun or pleasure. It was a report, and Claire would act in a way proper for her position.
The request wasn't surprising, in fact it was completely expected. Claire had stayed up late last night, writing the official report of the incident and turned it in before this meeting. No doubt Mrs. Granger Weasley could get her hands on that report with the simplest of requests. But she wanted to hear it from Claire herself. It was a high profile case, so it made sense. "Of course, I'm able." She answered. The regret and remorse still weren't setting in, and she was starting to think it never would. Was it a good thing or bad? Because she could retell the story without any bias, but at the same time it might seem to... cold and callous to some individuals.
She started at the beginning, about how she and Abigail had gone to Club Indigo and located which dancer was Desirae. How at the end of the girl's shift they'd followed her to the church and put up all the enchantments to prevent Desirae's escape and any other unwanted attention. About Desirae trying to bait Abigail and refusing to come quietly. Hell, Claire even listed each spell she, Abigail, and Desirae used when the duel began. Then the spiders swarming in and Desirae trying to call them off when she saw the arachnids dying. How Abigail had been injured, and how in the end Claire had finally electrocuted her before the girl would finish getting out the incantation for the unforgivable killing curse. The amount of detail Claire explained left no room for interpretation on what happened. "I did not believe she could be safely apprehended without further injury to Abigail, or potential injury to myself. Nor could I be sure that she would not attempt to injury or kill anyone else once in custody." Claire finally explained after telling the events of the night, making her decision making clear.
(Did not feel like writing it all out. XD)

Slipping into the Ministry was easier now, without the spiders. Oh sure, the Purifiers still had a number of spies within the walls, but it was very simple for Theo to disguise himself. Bundled up heavily against the cold, with a thick, bushy beard, pillows belted around his midsection to create girth that was not there, and most importantly, toning back the presense he usually projected, made him nearly indistinguishable at a glance. Couple that with a safe phrase given to a specific Ministry aide that had her leading him straight to the office of the second most powerful woman in the country, and he might not have needed to even try, really. Things had to be discussed now, unfortunately. The Purifiers weren’t interested in fighting head-on battles where they were outnumbered, which was perfectly reasonable, but they were not above brutal retaliation in whatever form they felt appropriate. Shame about Desirae, though. Theo actually thought she would have the courage to stand back up. Instead, she had stayed down. It was disappointing. And now she was gone. How pathetic. At the door, she aide knocked, and a moment later he was allowed to walk in. Hermione was there, perpetually calm and calculating, and so was a much younger blonde woman, probably close to his own age. Presumably, this was the one who had finished Desirae. As soon as the door closed behind him, Theo tugged off the fake beard and thick woolen cap from his head, wild laughter escaping his throat to fill the room. “Oh have put your hand in the Doxy nest now, Brains. Princess is furious and she’s preparing to hunt down the killer by any means necessary.”Theo looked over at the blonde, considering her. Tilted his head left, then right. Something about her was…off. Just a little. But it was hard to tell what, she seemed so— oh. She was like Nat, like Gaius, like more than a few Purebloods his age that he knew. She gave off that same vibe of needing to be even better than people thought. Slater was a pureblood name—yes, that fit. “You the one that got her? You need to get your family to safety right now.”@hermionejean Claire Evangeline Slater

Hermione listened without saying a word as Claire went through what had happened. She was very thorough, which she could appreciate. At the manner of Desirae’s death, Hermione’s eyebrows raised slightly but still remained silent. Claire could have of course tried the easy way out, Avada Kedavra, but that spell required a lot of force and malice. She thought quick on her feet and used what was available to her, and it got the job done. That was what mattered in the end. “You did well Ms. Slater,” she finally said, nodding her head in approval. As she took a sip of her coffee, Theo decided to make his presence known; he was disguised of course, but Hermione recognized his swagger, and he confirmed his identity as he stripped off the disguise. “Good, then she’s more likely to make a mistake. All we need is one to capitalize on,” she told him cooly, unmoved by his doxy nest remarks. She knew exactly what she was doing when she had arranged for the action to bring in Desirae Rousseau dead or alive, and knew that Elaine would be beyond angry. Voldemort had been the same way; murdering people that got in his way with bad news, and in the end it helped Harry find that last unknown Horcrux at Hogwarts. Angry people always made a mistake; they just needed to wait. “Ms. Slater’s parents have been moved by Headmaster Longbottom to a safe spot,” she informed him, then turned back to Claire. “Your siblings are safe at Hogwarts still under the protection of Neville,” she reassured her. Claire nodded as the Senior Undersecretary's compliment. She'd done her job, that was what mattered. Claire remained completely stoic and unfazed by the meeting, little to no emotion crossing her expression. Just cool apathy, Until someone came into the office. Immediately Claire felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, her senses on high alert. She knew immediately that it was a disguise, and that this person was dangerous. Her hand moved to rest against her wand. She wouldn't act though, Mrs. Granger-Weasley posture hadn't changed at all at his entrance. Or, when the disguise came off. Claire recognized him immediately. Theodorus Nott. One of the former Hogwarts students that had disappeared that night. It'd been decided that he was on Elaine's side since he hadn't returned with the rest of the students. He was a wanted fugitive. And... From the way her superior acted... A double agent? She knew she didn't trust him, and kept her hand on her wand.
"I knew my family would be in danger when I accepted the assignment." Claire responded coolly. "I was already prepared for the consequences that might follow." She was speaking to both of them, but she kept one eye on the teenage boy.

Per usual, Brains was entirely unperturbed by his arrival. She had adapted to his personality quirks pretty well, considering. The blonde girl, naturally, didn't trust him. It wasn't unusual. Wild animals were not to be trusted, and Theo always gave off the feeling of a great, dangerous beast who had yet to decide whether to challenge you or not. People like Abby, who were cut from the same cloth, or like Hermione, who had challenged even bigger beasts than he and come out triumphant, were the ones who tended to like him, or at least not actively dislike him. Theo nodded in response to Hemrione's remark. “Yes, there've been no orders to target the children. A group of Purifiers were sent to the parents, but they lost valuable time when one of the members of the raiding party Splinched herself. Terribly odd, that, like she was confused about where she wanted to go. They would have thought she was Confunded, if it weren't impossible to have done. Perhaps something in her dinner disagreed with her?” He grinned. A few Muggle fighters had been known to take certain substances that basically poisoned their body and mind. Among those were mushrooms that could really mess with people for a few hours... ...and she was still eyeing him. Theo smirked. “Calm yourself, Blondie. If I were here to assassinate you, you'd be dead and I'd be gone already. I'm not nearly the pushover that Secrets was.”He stopped for a moment to regard Hermione. “Don't trust her to make mistakes. Her anger sometimes blinds her, but it sometimes sharpens her, too. And remember, she's like a cat. She hasn't made a plan to go for Blondie here yet, but even if she did, I wouldn't expect it to go. It would get changed a dozen times in a day, or she would just up and decide to do something herself. And she's a very good duelist. I believe I would win if I fought her, but it would be a very long fight and it would be close. Plus, she learned from the dirt-digger, and if nothing else, the guy is the most efficient killer on either side.” Neville Longbottom had the advantage of not being interested in revenge, but merely in protecting people. So he didn't stop threats, he ended them. “But, there are things she's predictable at. She's a skilled duelist, but she's not a warrior. She's a torturer. And she puts herself and her wants above everything else. She'll want to kill Blondie here, but she'll want Blondie to hurt first. So if she gets the upper hand in a fight, she'll draw it out to inflict as much pain as she can. You've seen the corpses she left in her wake, the Ravenclaw boy has been cut almost to ribbons.”Theo reached into his robes and pulled out a small piece of parchment and a vial of a silvery-blue liquid that faintly glowed. He handed the parchment to Hermione. “This is a variation on the Painkilling Potion that I created. You're smart enough to vet the reliability, right Brains? It only lasts about ten minutes compared to the hours that a normal potion would last, but for those ten minutes you won't be able to feel pain at all. I suggest you make some and have Blondie here carry a vial with her at all times. So long as she can power through the pain, she'll have an advantage over the usual tactics Princess fights with.”@hermionejean Claire Evangeline Slater

Hermione let out a sound that was half a scoff and half a chuckle at Theo’s story. She wasn’t a fool enough to think that they were simply food poisoned, but she’d learned quickly not to question everything Theo did. He had kept his word; none of her supporters had been bodily harmed thus far, though the two Aurors she had sent with him to Azkaban had been a little frightened when they came back. Then they had the opportunity to strike the heart of the Purifiers organization, and strike they did. Now with Desirae gone, Elaine was down one close supporter. “I do not ever underestimate a girl who went so long without detection for her true nature,” Hermione told Theo seriously. Nobody outside the organization had really suspected Elaine of being capable of what she had done, but Hermione was not fool enough to make the same mistake twice. “Elaine’s inability to strike to kill first will be her eventual downfall as was Bellatrix Lestrange’s; Molly Weasley mortally reminded her of that,” she added, smirking a little. She’d been present for that particular duel, and seeing the kind faced red haired woman that became her second mother duel the crazed Lestrange to the death was something she would never, ever forget. Hermione’s hand reached out and took the parchment from him. She studied it carefully, and nodded once. “I can make this batch and have it ready shortly; I do not trust anyone else to create this potion for they’d ask questions I will not and cannot answer.” Hermione had been the top of her class in Potions, except for the year Harry had used Snapes’ books and instructions to get ahead, something she was still a little bitter about. “I would also recommend the Minister carry a vial as well, as she is always a likely target. Claire will have a vat of it at her disposal as well,” she told her, nodding to Claire. “The reason you were able to get to Desirae and defeat her is because of this mans’ information. I don’t blame you for keeping your wand within grasp certainly, but he wouldn’t be harming you in this meeting, that is not why he’s here,” she explained to her. @theodorus Claire Evangeline Slater

Blondie? Claire knew immediately in that moment she did not like Theodorus Nott. "I hardly think nicknames are appropriate." She harshly and sharply retorted. Nor did she trust him, so no, she wasn't going to just relax and act as if everything was fine. Obviously his presence here meant he was aiding the Ministry in their efforts to stop the Purifiers. But double agents were tricky, and dangerous business.
Keeping her wand in hand, her gaze flickered to the Senior Undersecretary as they discussed the use of painkilling potions. The advantage of it was immediately obvious, but Claire immediately spotted a flaw. "I see the advantage of such a potion, but I don't understand how ten minutes of clarity will be much good. If Desirae and Elaine were as close as the reports say. I don't expect a quick death if I'm caught." There was absolutely no emotion in her words, just like when she gave her report. The idea of being captured, while undesired, didn't phase her. Claire had been trained well. She'd been taught how to withstand torture and interrogations. Which is what it would be if she were ever caught by Elaine.
Claire frowned as her wand was pointed out by the Undersecretary. "With no disrespect to you, ma'am, I'd prefer to keep my wand close with him near. I do not trust someone who's allegiance is so easily swayed to turn on a cause they've played a role in." She didn't care that Theodorus was right there, and could hear every word. It was the truth. Double agents were just that, they played both sides. And you never knew what side they truly served.

Hermione proclaimed that she never underestimated Elaine. Had that been anyone else, Theo would have laughed; saying such a thing was generally a sign of underestimating someone. But from this woman, it sounded like the truth. And he agreed with her assessment: Elaine did take too long to kill people, and one day that was going to cost her. Theo nodded in response to the older woman's decision to brew the potion herself. It was something few people knew about, as Theo had kept quiet about it. It was to be his trump card should Elaine turn on him; surrounded by her followers, she'd try to make him submit though pain. But as long as this potion ran through his systems, he would stay focused, clear-headed, and careful, and could make a move at the right time to take her down and escape. He looked at Claire and laughed when she dismissed his use of nicknames. “Inappropriate, is it? Oh, Blondie, don't worry. You'll learn.” It rarely took long for people to realize that Theo cared as much for their opinion of propriety or his actions as he did for the dirt on the bottom of his boots. But when she mentioned that she didn't see the value of ten minutes of numbness, Theo just blinked. “In a duel, a single spell can decide everything. But the Princess won't do that to you, Blondie. Even as the two of you fight, she'll be looking to HURT you. If she can't, but you don't let her REALIZE she can't, she'll leave openings. And maybe you can get that decisive spell off. No, it's not going to help you if you lose the fight. What comes after will be more than any painkilling potion can fight. But during the fight...it might make all the difference.”“With no disrespect to you, ma'am […] they've played a role in.”Three seconds of ringing silence filled the room after these words. And then Theo threw his head back and laughed longer and harder than he had since coming into the room. He finally got himself under control enough to wipe tears from his eyes. “Oh, that is good, Blondie. I haven't laughed like that in a while.” Theo circled the table and leaned down to put his face close to hers. “Everyone I know has been fully aware of my allegiance since the first time we met. And that includes your boss over there.” He jerked a thumb at Hermione. She had been doubtful of him at first, which was understandable, but for all that Theo gave off the air of an arrogant jerk, nobody had ever once accused him of being a liar. “Now hear this, Blondie. I've never switched sides. I've not once betrayed any promise I made, nor given any false loyalty. I've ALWAYS been on the same side.”Then he grinned. “Mine.”He stood back up then and and smirked. “I'm not a Purifier, never was. They think I am, but I've always told the Princess that we have a partnership, I am not one of her people. She failed to deliver on her part of the agreement, so I owe her and her cause...nothing. And I owe your Ministry nothing. I didn't turn spy for the Ministry to repay any crimes I committed. Ask your boss, she can't pin anything on me even if she wanted to, because I didn't actually do anything. I turned spy for the Ministry because I thought it would be more exciting than just walking away from the Purifiers cleanly.”Theo smirked and turned back to Hermione. “Are all your Aurors this quick to jump to conclusions? Because we're two for two so far in 'I don't like him let's not trust him' knee jerk responses if we count Red. Two and a half out of three if we count you.”@hermionejean Claire Evangeline Slater

Hermione simply nodded at Claire's words; her own wand was in a holster on her arm she'd fashioned herself; if anything should happen she had quick and easy access to the wand Ollivander had crafted especially for her at the conclusion of the Second Wizarding War. Her vine and dragonheartstring wand had been lost that year, and Ollivander had worked directly with her to craft a new wand that somehow suited her even better, even though it was made of the exact same materials. "Then I suppose we must avoid you being captured," she said bluntly to the Auror. In truth that was her main goal even though now she was Senior Undersecretary; keep Claire and her family safe, as well as the Shacklebolts. She was certain, and so was Theo it appeared, that Abigail or her twin sister or brother may be targets as well. "The Shacklebolts must be kept safe as well, Miss Slater, especially Abigail. We tried to keep it quiet that she was with you that evening however I do not believe for a moment Elaine won't find out her involvement." With that, she turned back to Theo. "Have there been whispers concerning Ms. Shacklebolt or have they been focusing mostly on Claire?" she asked him briskly. She had to gage how much time she had to ensure the girls' safety before Elaine went after them. Claire Evangeline Slater@theodorus ooc: short but TABBY MENTION GL THEO HAHAAHAH

Claire's eyes narrowed at his arrogance. This boy was acting as if he were God, completely untouchable and superior than both women in the room. Sorry to burst your bubble, no matter how skilled he was, and perfect he thought himself to be he was nothing more than a criminal. "I think you should learn manners, considering your situation." she snapped. He might be here to assist Mrs. granger-Weasley but that didn't mean he was free to do whatever he liked. They could arrest him in a heart beat if they chose. She gritted her teeth as he continues to speak, acting as if he was the wisest, most important person in the room and chastising her like a child. His laughing only made her annoyance worse, and then he leaned in close to her, face inches from her own.
"So why should I trust someone that's made it clear that they only care about themselves?" She hisses back, hand tight on her wand. "You'd betray us without any hesitation if it pleased you." she finished, meeting his gaze without any hesitation or falter. No, she wouldn't trust someone that was only here because it benefitted him for the moment. "You're just another bloody mercenary."
He's turned back to her boss then, and Claire let out an annoyed huff. How could she trust someone like him? He'd made his intentions quite clear, he wasn't here because he wanted to do the right thing. He just wanted to find something more exciting. Claire's gaze moved back to her boss, the look in her eyes making her thoughts quite clear.

Theo listened to Hermione’s thoughts on the matter. Keeping Claire safe was nice and all, but things might be better served if she were used as live bait. She might easily draw Elaine out for a direct confrontation, as angry as the Purifier leader was. Such a trap would not be without risk, of course, but the potential rewards. From a tactical standpoint, were vast. He shrugged when she asked about any information on whether the Shacklebolts were being targeted. “I haven’t heard anything. But even if there were plans, I would be deliberately kept in the dark. The Purifiers never risk telling someone about any plan they might try to sabotage. Given that I’ve proven in the past that I won’t kill just because they want someone dead, it’s unlikely they would trust me with information regarding students I attended Hogwarts with. Particularly Abigail Shacklebolt, as she and I were involved physically. They think I would turn on them if they went after her.”He turned and grinned at the Ministry official. “They’re wrong, of course, but that’s how it is.”He smirked again when Claire went off on him a moment later, then held up a finger, wagging it at her like a parent to a small child. “Someone wasn’t listening. I can’t betray you, because I’m not on your side.”He shrugged and looked away from the two of them, expression sobering at the feeling he was getting. The quickening was coming. Of the war, maybe. More likely, of the time when he would have to reveal his espionage rather spectacularly. Elaine wasn’t going to let this go, and if he could prevent a reprisal, he had a feeling Hermione would expect him to. Claire didn’t like him, so she wouldn’t believe him even if he said it. But Hermione…understood him, to a degree. She would…get it, he thought. He turned on the Purifiers against their knowledge for the fun of it, but also because they had failed to live up to their end of an agreement Elaine had made with him. But He’d made no such demands of Hermione, she was under no obligations. So if he decided to stop supporting her, he would let her know, to her face, without fear or deception. And he was pretty sure she knew it, even without asking. A mercenary, was he? “Ha! A mercenary is a man whose loyalty is for sale. And a Purifier is just a dog feeding on any scrap of power the Princess offers.”
“You can tame a man with money. You can tame a dog with food. But nobody can tame a wolf. They will have freedom, or death.”Then he turned back to them, a truly eager grin on his face. Theo looked at death as the last great adventure, the last enemy to face off with—and defeat, if he could. “Either way, they remain wolves for their whole life. And that's what counts, in the end, wouldn't you say?”@hermionejean Claire Evangeline Slater

Hermione watched the exchange between the two younger adults with narrowed eyes. This meeting would have to come to a close in the next few seconds before one of them whipped out their wands of each other. “ You two are both too young to have been alive for the Second Wizarding War, you do not fully comprehend what we are standing on the precipice of. All you have to go off of is what your parents tell you, but that is nothing on what it’s really like out there. If Elaine is anything like Grindlewald or Voldemort, and I have a very strong feeling she is, there will be more loss of life than either of you can comprehend.” She turned to Theo first. “Your life is more at stake than Ms. Slaters; Dupree would likely want retribution on who dealt the killing blow to Rousseau, but what do you think she’s going to do to the person who sold her out?” Then she turned to Claire. “I recommend a strong measure of security for your and your parents homes, I would go so far as the Fidelius Charm, but that is entirely your call.” She looked straight ahead. “I do not think that Elaine Dupree is going to act irrationally here. She has lost her right hand woman, and she is bound to have figured out that someone she considers part of her ranks betrayed her. Voldemort and Grindlewald both worked under the guise of the utmost secrecy and patience, and I do not believe Elaine’s age will deter that. Perhaps once, but she fooled Hogwarts and Neville Longbottom for the better part of a full year what her true nature was.” Hermione gave a wry chuckle. “Alastor Moody used to always tell us ‘constant vigilance’, but here it does come into play. Don’t get cocky, and don’t be stupid. One bad move may be your last.” She closed her notes and gestured for them to leave. “I know how to find you if I need to Mr. Nott,” she told him. END HERMIONE Claire Evangeline Slater @theodorus go brawl somewhere else XD
