Her professor seemed ... could she be nervous about something? About what she was going to teach Anna next? Anna listened carefully as she started talking about how the world was changing and how vulnerable Anna was as champion. This didn't bode well. But if she was going to teach Anna something to help her, Anna was definitely interested. Her mouth fell open when Professor Zhu said the spell and explained it. A shield charm that worked against dark magic? How had Anna not heard of this? She was quite adept when it came to shielding charms, as she'd shown in the tournament, but she'd never even heard of this one. She nodded seriously. "Of course I'll practice it. Do you want me to now or just in my spare time, since we can't really see how well I'm doing with it?" Not that she wanted someone to be shooting dark spells at her, but given the status of the world- like Professor Zhu said- it probably would happen at one time or another. Better to be prepared.

Anna agreed that she would practice the spell, but that didn’t do anything to unclench the hand that had somehow wrapped itself around Imogen’s heart. “If you’d like to try it now, there are some visual indicators that might help me assess how well you’re doing at it.” Imogen said, trying not to let her voice shake with all of her sudden nerves. Why did she care so much about this? She knew that there were a hundred thousand protections put into place, and she didn’t even care about Gryffindors, but – but she cared about Anna. Because she was her student, and because she genuinely seemed to want to do well, not just in Charms class but in the field in general. Imogen frowned at herself, and then remembered that she wasn’t alone. She schooled her face back into a neutral expression, knowing that any smile she would try to give would just look fake. “But of course, I won’t cast anything at you.” At least nothing Dark.

She wanted Anna to try it now? Well, since there were some visual signs of it, that wasn't a bad idea; Anna just hadn't been expecting it. "Ok, I'll go ahead and try it out," she said. Anna took a deep breath and then muttered, "Protego Horribilus." She couldn't tell if anything worked, but she figured that Professor Zhu would be able to tell. She held her focus, imagining the spell working like she knew it did when she used the other versions of it. She was pretty good at those, so she hoped it would carry over into this. "How am I doing?" She asked, still nervous because she couldn't see anything. Then again, she didn't know what to look for.

Anna agreed to try the spell out while they were together, and Imogen nodded once. Anna muttered something – presumably the spell – under her breath, and Imogen could tell immediately that it hadn’t worked correctly. “Look at your feet.” Imogen told Anna. She had mentioned that there were some visual cues that the Shielding Charm had taken hold, so while they were there, Imogen thought she might as well teach Anna what those cues were. “If you had done the spell correctly, it would look like there were blue sparks jumping around your shoes for the first few seconds after the casting.” Raising her own wand to demonstrate, Imogen incanted the spell, and gestured down to her own feet, where tiny, electric-blue sparks leapt for a few moments before fading into the air.

At her professor's demand, Anna instantly looked at her feet and then back up. She didn't know what she was looking for, so she didn't know if she'd seen it or not. Then Professor Zhu explained and demonstrated herself. Anna nodded seriously, watching the blue sparks for a few moments, biting her lips in concentration. She wanted to get this right. It seemed like a very important spell and a useful one, so she decided to try again. "Alright. Let me have another go," she said before taking a deep breath and saying the spell again. She looked down at her feet and glared. Nothing! Determined to not ruin it for herself or create a block in her mind, Anna lowered her wand, closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she was ready again, she lifted her wand and repeated the spell. She opened her eyes and looked downward, smiling slightly at the sight of small blue sparks there. "Are there other signs?" She asked, turning her attention back to her professor again.

Imogen smiled pleasantly when Anna managed to cast the spell again, this time perfectly. She shook her head when Anna asked if there were other visual signs. “Sadly, no. So part of using this charm is knowing how to glance down at your feet quickly so you can continue doing whatever while also ensuring you’re correctly protected.” Imogen glanced down at her watch – free period was almost over. “I’m going to give you a permission slip for a few of the books in the Restricted Section, so you can learn more about Illusion Charms, in theory. A lot of the higher power charms aren’t legal, so I’m going to trust that you’ll use the theory only.” Imogen said, scrawling a quick note on a piece of parchment with her signature so Anna could do what she had recommended.

Anna smiled, relieved when Professor Zhu told her she'd performed the spell correctly. Good. That meant she could practice and know whether or not she was doing it correctly. Then her professor started writing a note, explaining to Anna that she was giving her permission for the Restricted Section so she could learn more. "Thank you, Professor," Anna said gratefully. Theory wasn't her favorite thing to study, but after making it through the First Task, she was willing to study anything if it might help her in the ones to come. "Oh, I have to go to class. Thanks again," Anna said, accepting the parchment and hurrying out of the room, stowing it in a safe place in her bag so it wouldn't get lost. @imogen ---end---
