Working the Tri-Wizard tournament under her boss, Padma Thomas, had been an incredibly exciting job, not that Callisto really cared. She was the organized one. The one who always had the notes and the files. The one who was always moving around, talking to who needed to be talking to and whatnot.
Now, she was at the Yule Ball, which was technically sponsored by the tournament and ministry workers were invited, so there were several reasons for her to be there. A lot of international camaraderie was happening, which was a good thing. She wasn't much of a dancer, though, but she was pleased to be here. Making connections and-
"Ow!" she exclaimed. It was her fault, really, looking at the crowd instead of looking where she was going. She turned to narrow her eyes the boy, who looked... a little familiar, but not really. "Some people are walking here," she reminded him.

Brandon was at the Yule Ball. In all honesty, he didn't know why. He didn't have a date and all of his friends did. Basically everyone he knew was here with someone and Brandon was left wandering around the edges, watching. He was sure that some of his friends would give him a dance here and there later, but he wasn't sure when. So he was wandering around, watching and listening to the music. Of course he was, music was his life. This stuff was elegant, but not quite his style. He saw a friend dancing and smiled, waving as they nodded at him. He stopped when he ran abruptly into someone. A girl. Rather, a woman. She was obviously older than he was, probably one of the ministry visitors, but not a very polite one at that. An eyebrow rose as she blamed him. "Obviously we both were, and if either one of us had been paying attention we wouldn't have collided. Why don't you calm down? You're at a party." Normally Brandon never would have spoken to a stranger like that, but her tone rubbed him the wrong way. It wasn't like she was better than he was and he wasn't about to take that lying down. @callisto His Suit

As her eyes settled on the boy she took in his features. Brown hair, kind eyes, probably a nice smile when he wasn't being defensive. She rolled her eyes at his words, folding her arms and turning her attention back to the crowd. "I've been to parties before and they're all the same. I'm not missing anything by being 'not calm'," she said, the sarcasm and annoyance dripping from her words like venom, Who was this teenaged brat to tell her to have some fun and calm down, hmmm? She turned back toward him, gesturing to him with one hand, "and are you having fun, sir? I see a lot of females without a dance partner, why don't you remedy that and make yourself useful?" she suggested. It was stupid that it was traditional for males to ask females to dance rather than vice versa, but she accepted that this was how most societies functioned.

She turned away from him, still speaking condescending and acting like he wasn't worth her time and Brandon realized that his normally dormant temper was rising. "Then what's the point in even coming if you've seen it all before," he commented with a roll of his eyes. Not that she would see; she wasn't looking at him, which was probably a good thing considering how much she was riling him up. "You might as well just leave and go somewhere you actually want to be," he suggested. Honestly, why would you come to a party like this with such a sour attitude? Especially if you weren't going to keep it to yourself. Brandon turned to look at all the couples smiling and dancing, enjoying the night. He wasn't upset not to have a date and he needed to remember that he came here to have a good time. He shouldn't let some stick-in-the-mud ruin his experience. After all, the Yule ball wasn't something that happened frequently.
Then she challenged him, asking if he was having a good time and practically telling him that he should be dancing with someone. His eyes narrowed as he turned his attention back to her. She really was beautiful, and he couldn't help but wonder if her attitude was a constant thing or just how she responded to parties. Still, he wasn't going to put up with it. "Well I was having fun until I ran into someone with a poisonous attitude." Woah. That was rude. For Brandon, at least. He couldn't believe he actually said that to someone, especially to a ministry person, but oh well. She started it, immature as that sounded. "And I'll dance when I want to, not when someone that's too good for this tells me to." He should have ignored her comment about how he should be dancing with someone, but he couldn't. When he wanted to dance, he would, but he didn't need a snooty ministry girl telling him what he should be doing.

Callisto snapped her attention back toward him as he spoke, "I'm here because I'm required to for my job. You know what a job is, right?" she said coldly, rolling her own eyes. Who was he to tell her to leave and go somewhere she 'wanted to go'? She wanted to be here, where her boss wanted her to be. That was what she was meant to do. Granted, she should have figured out if this kid wasn't from Hogwarts... because she shouldn't be treating the kids from other schools like this. But, alas, Callisto did her thing and didn't worry about that.
He turned back to her at her question, his eyes narrowed, and for a split second Callistos own glared vanished. He had... well, really lovely eyes. Surprisingly lovely. But then that mouth opened again and he spoke about how she was 'pompous'. She scoffed in offense as he went on about how he'd dance when he wanted to and not when she, who was clearly to good for 'this', wanted him too. "Well, don't hold your breath for anyone to ask you," she spat back.

He wasn't even going to dignify her question with a response. Everyone knew what a job was, but what was the point in fulfilling your job and coming to a happy social function when you were clearly incapable of being happy? Maybe she needed a new job, one that wouldn't make her so tense and angry. And one where she could actually enjoy something as entertaining as a Ball. Apparently not, which was strange because someone as pretty as her should definitely have a date. He glanced around for a second, wondering if she did have a date somewhere nearby. Hmm... At her comment, Brandon rolled his eyes again, this time wanting her to see it. She was behaving like a student. Immaturely, that was. "I don't need to hold my breath for someone to ask me. I'm quite capable of asking them myself," he told her, his tone cold of ice. "In fact, yup! There's Elena over there. I'm going to go and enjoy myself now," Brandon added pointedly before walking away without a second glance. That woman was infuriating. * * * Brandon had finally forgotten about her. The ridiculous ministry woman who thought she was better than everyone else. He'd danced with some friends, ate some food and relaxed completely. This actually was fun and he was convinced that part of the reason he liked it so much was the fact that he didn't have a date. He could dance with anyone he wanted without having to explain himself to someone else and that was really the best. He'd just taken a friend and dropped her off at the edge of the dance floor, turning around when he ran into someone. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" Brandon stopped talking mid-sentence when he realized who he'd run into. Her again? Of all the dumb luck. This was going to be great. @callisto

Callisto scoffed as he said that he was capable of asking someone himself. She was going to tell him to prove it, but then he noticed a girl that he knew and walked away. She scoffed under her breath, "enjoy himself. Hmmph."
* * *
After a lovely conversation with her friend Imogen, she was headed back to take another look around the dance floor. That's what she was hear for, after all, to keep an eye on things.
But, of course, someone ran into her. She turned to glare and he stopped mid sentence. She clenched her fists, seething. "You again. Was that 'enjoying yourself' thing just too hard for you?" she asked in a low growl of a voice.

Really? She was blaming everything on him again? Man, she was probably just the type of woman who thought the world revolved entirely around her and she could do no wrong. She also seemed the type to blame everything and everyone else for her miserable existence because obviously she couldn't walk around in a decent mood. He also couldn't help but wonder how many other people she'd verbally attacked since the ball started. His eyes narrowed as he refused to look away. "You act like I actually ran into you on purpose. Like I would want to have another round with you and your attitude," he said coldly. "Sorry, but that wasn't the plan. Maybe you should realize that everything doesn't revolve around you." He should probably walk away now, but something in him wouldn't let him. He doubted his words would have any effect on her; she was completely self-centered and arrogant, thinking she could do no wrong. Was it to much to think that he wouldn't have to put up with her more tonight? Apparently so.

He didn't look away and she found that she couldn't either. Her eyes narrowed even more to rival his and he scoffed indignantly as he spoke. "Well, that was the second time, how am I supposed to know it's not on purpose?" she rolled her eyes. She shook her head as he went on, speaking about how the world didn't revolve around her. "Well, with our track record it seems that your world does," she spat, not realizing that it wasn't a very good insult. She folded her arms over her chest, and, finally, turned away from him to look back out at the dance floor. "Besides, you're attitude isn't great to be around either, kid. What's your name anyway? So I know to avoid anything with your name on it," she asked, snapping her attention back to him.

Brandon couldn't help but laugh when she accused that he was actually running into her on purpose. It wasn't the nice I'm-entertained kind of laugh either. It was a did-you-really-say-that? kind of laugh. And he didn't even bother to make it a short laugh. Did she think he was an idiot? Why in the world would he want to run into her? "Believe me, it was not on purpose," he assured her, not caring whether or not she believed him. She was probably pissed that he laughed anyway, so it didn't really matter what else he said. Then he arched an eyebrow at her, "We have a track record? After one meeting?" Really, this wasn't like Brandon at all. He wasn't one to lash out or be sarcastic and cynical, but at the moment, he couldn't keep it in. She was ... infuriating! She just stood there smugly, looking at the room like she was better than everyone in it, with her long, curly hair and her glittering eyes and ... no. He wasn't even going to go there. He laughed again when she asked what his name was. "Like I'm going to tell you that. You'd probably report me or try to get me thrown out or something equally ridiculous," he accused. He wouldn't put that past her.

Callisto growled under her breath as he said that it wasn't on purpose. Sure, it wasn't. Maybe he was just some demon sent to cause her a personal night of hell. She had been here, talked with friends and co workers, but hadn't even danced yet. She wasn't a dancer and she loved classical music so it made sense that she would dance, right? But she didn't. And she wasn't planning to. "Yes. And it's two meetings. That counts as a track record," she snapped with a stronger glare. She would rather continue the act of not caring, so she tried to fall back into that every chance she could, but he was infuriating!
And even worse, he wouldn't give her his name. And. He. Laughed. She turned her entire body and whipped her hand toward him, only stopping inches from smacking his arm. She took a deep breath, bringing her hand back slowly. "I don't appreciate being laughed at. And fine, don't give me a name. I'll just keep calling you kid."

Really? She was going to argue the fact that they'd spoken twice instead of once. This was getting even more pathetic. Didn't she have something better to do? Like, a date to annoy or a coworker to complain at? No? Darn. Apparently he was going to have to deal with more of this. He raised his hands up by his head and shook them, "My bad," he said, being as sarcastic as possible, for him. "Twice instead of once. Big difference."
Well that was interesting. She almost hit him. Unexpected. The real question is, why did she stop? Because he was a student or because they were in public? Not that he should goad her more. And then she called him a kid. He rose an eyebrow at her, "Whatever makes you happy, Grandma," he said snobbily before turning and walking away without a second glance. This time he didn't really have an excuse, but as he walked away he saw Elena again, crying as she stood next to a wall. Brandon's anger dissipated as he walked over to her, only to find out that her boyfriend broke up with her only minutes earlier.

Of course he didn't think that 'two' was much different than one. Then, he... called. Her. Grandma. Her jaw dropped and she completely forgot how to speak. Then he was gone, walking away again. She breathed, letting her anger dissipate with the breath. She was done with that boy. Forever. Now, she was going to find something worthwhile to do. She was going to find some friends or... something and enjoy the party with some sort of... something. Her brain was too jumbled.
But, her eyes kept finding him as she walked around the edge of the ballroom. He was talking to a girl with long brown hair, probably someone he knew from school. Either way, the girl looked depressed and the boy was over there being all charming and making her laugh. Oh, so he was actually a nice guy sometimes!? Why did that make her even more angry?! She found some people to talk to, but eventually she wandered back over to the drink table, finally, having forgotten all about him. She turned, drink in hand, and her hand smacked into someone. She looked up, knowing who it'd be right away. "Oh sodding hell."

Brandon was distracted. He'd spent the last while trying to help comfort Elena, so her night wasn't entirely ruined by that jerk she'd previously had as a boyfriend. She asked him if he would mind going to get her a drink, so Brandon made his way to the refreshments, being particularly careful in an effort to not run into that angry ministry lady. Thinking about her left him confused. On the one hand, she treated him like dirt and deserved what he gave back to her. On the other hand, that was not Brandon's way and he felt guilty about it. He should have been kinder. He decided that if he did run into her again, he'd try to be nice. Which might not last long with her sour attitude, but he would at least try.
There was a small line at the drink table, so Brandon got in the back of it, moving up slowly as people got their drinks and wandered away. When it was almost his turn, someone turned around and their hand hit him. Immediately Brandon could sense it was her. Determined to keep his previous resolution, he forced a smile, even when he heard her mutter to herself. He chuckled slightly, shaking his head, "You know, we should probably try to stop meeting one another like this. If we don't we might end up dueling and causing a scene here," he teased, curious about how she would take it. If he really tried, would he be able to make her lighten up? It was worth a shot at least.

Callisto set down the now half empty drink cup and turned back toward him, trying to glare, but he was... smiling? Her face was just puzzled now as he spoke, his tone different than before. It was actually kind of... she shook her head, replacing her narrowed eyes. "Dueling at a dance party? That sounds incredibly unsafe," she said, but it didn't come out as coldly as she intended it too. She cleared her throat and reached out to tap his jacket, "I didn't spill any of the drink on you, did I?" she said, her voice sounding gentle for a moment. Then she snapped back into reality and brought her hand back, "I mean if you hadn't been standing so close behind me I wouldn't have smacked you." Then she took a step away from the table, so she wasn't so much in line anymore, "weren't you getting a drink or something then?" she said, her tone demanding.
