It was the evening of the Yule Ball, and Viola found themself surprisingly disappointed with who they were going with. Not because Maria was in herself a disappointment, but...there was someone else Viola would have wanted to go with, if they had been asked. But they hadn't been asked, and Maria was Maria, and it was all going to be alright. The good thing about this whole situation was that it was easy for Viola to slip away from their date and start searching for their other person. Viola had been anticipating Roxy to be difficult to find, but they were wrong. Her hair, while not the bright red of her cousin's, stuck out like a sore thumb, in the best way. Since Viola had already danced with Roxy before, they didn't know why it was so important to them that they get to dance with her again, but, whatever. They were too busy making a beeline towards Roxy to psychoanalyze themself. Tapping Roxy on the shoulder, Viola put on their normal easygoing smile. "Fancy seeing you here."

Roxy was determined to dance at least once with all of her friends at the Yule Ball. And Cordelia had her camera, so she didn’t mind, so Roxy was working on it. She was of age and she had worked her way over to the bar at one point, which may have been a contributing factor. But she would have done it anyway, tipsy-happy or not. She spun around at the tap on her shoulder and grinned when she found Viola there, pulling them into a quick hug. ”Small world, yeah. I was hoping I'd find you! Dance with me?” she asked, eyes sparkling. @viola DRESS

Viola had not been expecting to see Roxy like this. She seemed a little off, though Viola couldn’t quite figure out why. They’d figure it out soon, they were sure. After backing away from the brief hug with Roxy, Viola wiggled their eyebrows at her. “What, you want me to be your partner again?” She teased, alluding to the time she had asked more or less the same thing at the dance party Roxy’s cousin had thrown. “Do you want me to be the guy again?” Viola asked, even though they were already slipping their hand onto Roxy’s waist, anticipating the answer to be yes. “That dress looks great on you, by the way.” And Viola’s voice totally didn’t catch when they said that. Definitely not. They were just friends.

“Yes,” Roxy answered, giggling at Viola’s eyebrow wiggle. “And yes, if you value your toes,” she added as Viola once again put their hand on her waist.
“Thank you! I almost wore red, but I decided not to be such a Gryffindor stereotype. It’s secretly super comfy, and shoes are too. ” She paused in her spiel. “You look great too, you know.” And they did, okay, it would take an idiot not to see it. Roxy figured there were probably a lot of idiots, when it came down to it, but she didn’t mind. That meant she got to dance with Viola, and she was in favour of that.
Her hand was on Viola’s shoulder, and one outstretched, and hey, she knew how to do this, maybe, probably!

Viola let out a laugh when Roxy said that she would be the girl if Viola valued their toes. “You didn’t damage them irrevocably last time, so excuse me for having a little bit of confidence in you.” They said, squeezing Roxy’s hand slightly. She was definitely talking more than Viola was used to, and that, along with the general offness, was beginning to make Viola believe that Roxy might have imbibed a flute of champagne or two, and was a happy drunk. That was useful information to have. Not that Viola was planning on getting Roxy drunk in the future or anything, but if they happened to go for drinks together sometime…
“I’m sure you would’ve looked good in whatever you chose.” Viola said with a chuckle when Roxy said she didn’t want to be a Gryffindor stereotype. Viola was probably a stereotype themself, since they were wearing a typically gender-neutral black, though the dress’s form-fitting cut probably helped their case as far as being the stereotypical gender-neutral person, if there ever was such a thing. “Here we go again.” They said with a smile. When the music swelled, Viola began to move, and if they pulled Roxy closer than was absolutely necessary, well, nobody needed to know.

“Yes, but last time I hadn’t found the bar,” she pointed out, as they began to dance. “And I wasn’t wearing heels. And I did step on your toes.” Not that her heels were tall, but that didn’t make them not heels.
Despite her protestations about her lack of skill, there was probably something to be said for being a little tipsy, because she was paying far less attention to the steps, and far more to the music, and to her partner. They were closer than last time she thought, but that made it easier, because she could feel Viola’s movements more clearly, and she knew how to move in tandem with people - she did it all the time on the pitch. She didn’t second-guess, just ran on instinct, and it was working and it was fun. She grinned at Viola, practically beaming, but she didn’t dare say anything because she was sure karma would decree that the moment she said it was going well it would stop.

Viola’s suspicions that something was off about Roxy was confirmed when she said that she had found the bar. Well, Viola had never danced with someone who was tipsy before, so this was going to be a new experience. She had, however, danced with someone who was wearing heels and was inexperienced, so maybe it wouldn’t be that bad? When they were dancing, it didn’t seem like Roxy lacked coordination in any way – she was dancing better than she had before, in fact. “So, did you take anyone as your date, or do I get to let you step on my toes for as long as I want?” They asked teasingly. Even though the question had been light-hearted, Viola was curious. There was no particular reason behind that curiosity, of course, because there was no way Viola had a crush on Roxy. Nope, no way. But it was good to make small talk with your dance partner, and if that small talk happened to revolve around their partners in other areas of life, it didn’t matter, right?

“I invited Cordelia as my date,” she said. She couldn’t make the finger quotes around date because she was holding Viola’s hand, and there was no way she was letting go, but she emphasised them extra in her voice. “She’s got her camera and is taking pictures somewhere; she’s good,” she added. She wasn’t a lousy date, she wanted that to be clear, because Cordelia was happy and she was happy and...
She was off rhythm again, just a smidge. She could hear it! She corrected ever so slightly, and yes, she was back. No toes were injured. She grinned. ”I can try not to step on your toes as long as you like,” she answered the second part of their question. Her previous goal had only been half-achieved, but it didn’t seem quite so urgent anymore.

Cordelia. Viola wracked their brain for a face to match to that name, but they came up empty. “Don’t think I’ve met her before.” Unless they were forgetting, which was possible, given everything else that was going on at the moment. Being close to someone who was very warm and very pretty wasn’t the scenario most conducive to remembering things correctly. But apparently Roxy’s date wouldn’t mind that Viola stole her, which was probably a good thing, considering Viola wasn’t in the mood for a fight – at least not right now.
Roxy faltered a moment, but then caught back up to where they were in the song, without any toes undergoing unnecessary torture. “You’re doing much better at it than before.” Viola said, half-smirking and half-smiling. “Have you been practicing without me?” If she had been, Viola was going to find out who Roxy’s partner was, and then give them a stern talking to. Viola was supposed to be the only person who could dance with Roxy, even if they couldn’t say why, exactly, that was so important to them.

Roxy laughed lightly. “No, you probably haven’t met Cordelia. She’s shy. But if you see a blond girl with a camera, that’s her.” Actually, maybe when they took a break from dancing, they could go find Cordie and get her to take a picture.
“There was a lesson,” she admitted. “Counsellor Patil did it because she’s Head of House. I dragged one of the little fourth-years into dancing with me. It was a mess, but I guess I learned something.” And she was entirely gratefully for it, because between that and hearing the music again and again, she was in fact doing much better than before, and that was good, because as much as she joked about stepping on Viola's toes, she didn't actually want to. Quite the opposite, even.

Viola nodded when Roxy said that Cordelia was shy. They honestly didn’t care either way, as long as Cordelia wasn’t there, getting in the way of Viola dancing with Roxy. “Are you sure there’s not more than one blonde girl with a camera?” Viola teased. Maybe they were crazy, but they felt like Hogwarts had a disproportionate amount of blondes and redheads. Apparently most of the redheads were related to Roxy, though, so Viola wasn’t inclined to snap about it.
“Oooh.” Viola said, pouting slightly. “You know, if you had asked me, I would have practiced with you more.” Though, this was kind of a nice surprise, now that they were thinking about it. “You know, maybe when I get out of Hogwarts I could be a professional dancer.” They had already pitched the idea to Brandon, but Viola wasn’t expecting Brandon’s politely affirmative reaction out of Roxy. They were expecting the truth about whether or not they could actually do it.

“Maybe there are some fancy photographers for the Prophet here who might be, but I’m pretty sure Cordelia’s the only student to bring her camera to the Ball.” She giggled. “I think her camera’s probably her real date,” she said, which… was probably true, because she hadn’t seen Cordie in a bit. And not something she would have said if she hadn’t had something to drink, because it sounded a little mean.
”Yeah, but it was a Gryffindor lesson, so I couldn’t exactly pull you along, could I?” But Viola was pouting and she wanted them to stop, so she squeezed their hand lightly and smiled.
And then they mused about being a professional dancer, and while Roxy thought Viola was really good at dancing, she wasn’t an expert by any means. Plus - “Is that a thing that exists? I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that.” She paused, a full set of steps without falter, and then answered her own question. “I guess there’s got to be someone teaching and stuff, because all the purebloods seem to know how. But then you’d have to deal with blood purists.” She knew that wasn’t Viola’s cup of tea. And that was teaching, not a professional dancer - that would be something different, wouldn’t it? ”That’s not what you mean though, is it?”

Viola smirked when Roxy said that her date’s real date was a camera. It didn’t bother them, since it meant that they got Roxy all to themself, but that was impolite to say, and Viola was trying to be better about being polite. “Would anyone have actually gotten mad at you for bringing a foreign guest?” Viola asked with a roll of their eyes. “Aren’t you supposed to pander to us or something?” A lot of the Hogwarts students seemed to be falling over themselves to become friends – or more – with foreigners, and Viola wasn’t sure whether that was something that their headmaster had told them to do or if the foreigners were just fresh meat for people who had gotten bored with being around the same group for the last seven years.
Viola shrugged when Roxy asked if professional ballroom dancers were a thing. “There are ballroom competitions. I think if you do well enough there are cash prizes. So I could do that.” And since they weren’t going to have to pay for transportation fees like Muggles, they might actually come out ahead. “It was just an idea. Since I have absolutely no idea what I want to do after school.” Viola sighed. They hadn’t thought now knowing what they wanted to do was such a big deal, but with graduation hurtling towards them like a runaway train, it was actually becoming kind of stressful. “Do you know what you wanna do after graduation?” Viola asked. Maybe hearing Roxy’s aspirations would help spark something in them, or at least keep their mind off of their own woes.

“Welcoming, not pandering,” Roxy corrected, knowing full well that there wasn’t necessarily an awful lot of a difference. ”So you’re right, I probably wouldn’t have gotten in trouble. But no one else was going to, and some of them are dating, so.” She gave a small shrug, as if that would explain everything. It didn’t, but it was past, so there wasn’t any point in worrying about it.
“Oh, that’d be cool then. But you’d have to have a partner, and I’m definitely not good enough for that.” And then she blushed, because she’d just gone and stuck herself in Viola’s future like it was nothing. But Viola asked what she wanted, and she sighed. Oh, the future. Merlin and Circe, she did not want to deal with that. Or rather - she wanted two things something awful, but they seemed to go in opposite directions. “I want to play Quidditch. I was at the scouting thing the other month, and I think it went well. I just want to make the world a better place too. Quidditch players don’t do that so much.”

Viola snorted at Roxy’s correction of their verbiage. The Hogwarts students (and staff) could delude themselves into thinking they were welcoming all they wanted, but Viola was pretty damn sure they were just pandering. “So even if we were dating, you wouldn’t have taken me? Cold.” And also another reason not to rush things and do something stupid like ask Roxy on a date. Even if she was really pretty, Viola wasn’t sure if commitment was something they could…well, commit to. A date wasn’t commitment but it was edging close to one.
“That’s true.” Viola agreed. They hadn’t really remembered the partner thing when they were considering their future as a ballroom dancer. Roxy said that she wanted to be a Quidditch player, and someone who made the world a better place, but seemed to think those two things were mutually exclusive. “Become a really good Quidditch player, and then use your position in the spotlight to make the world a better place that way. Easy.” Celebrities got to push their agendas all they wanted, and people accepted it because they were famous.
