Kegan nodded when Evelyn said that age seemed to complicate things. “I think maybe that they were always complicated, and getting older is just what allows us to see it.” Then again, Kegan had always known things were complicated. It was just the way xyr life went – when you could remember everything, it was hard to believe in the black-and-white picture that some people liked to paint for children. But in any case, the older xe got, the less xe believed in that duality, if xe had ever really given credence to it at all.
Kegan was a little surprised to hear that Evelyn liked to fade into the background. Most of the Quidditch players xe knew weren’t as good about letting others have the spotlight. That was different, but a good kind of different. “Do you have a lot of fans, then, or not so many?” There were people who were loyal to teams in Quidditch, and then people who were loyal to players no matter which team they ended up on. Kegan was neither of those kinds of people, but xe couldn’t see Evelyn accruing much of her own fan base if she didn’t talk much.

Ev nodded, agreeing with is point of view. "I think you're right," she said, just in case her nod didn't get that across. "I just always thought when I was younger that things would make more sense when I got older, but I'm learning that they definitely do not." The older she got, the more complicated things were. A part of her longed for the simplicity of her youth, of when she stayed in her own little bubble with her books, but then she thought of her relationship with Rocco, her friendship with Dustin and she didn't wish for that. Not really.
She smiled, laughing just a little when Kegan asked if she had a lot of fans. She shook her head, "No. I mean, my fans are people who are fans of the Falcons, but not much other than that. Like I said, I'm not really good at talking; especially under pressure. And I tend to shut down when I'm expected to talk in a big crowd." Now, Ev wasn't really sure if she had background fans or not, like people that thought she was good and an asset to the team. She hoped people thought she was good enough to be on the team. After a moment, she started speaking again. "Well, I do get quite a few letters. And I try to answer those. But in person, I'm not good with fans at all." Hopefully that made sense.

“I have a bone to pick with anyone who told me that.” Kegan agreed when Evelyn said that she had believed that everything would make more sense when shew grew up. Even if Kegan had never thought things were simple, xe certainly thought they would seem less nonsensical as xe added years onto his age, but it wasn’t so. “There are some things that you never understand, no matter how old you get. Like why good people have to die.” If anyone ever told Ranger or Zander that their parents’ deaths would make more sense when they were older, then Kegan was going to go to blows over it, no questions asked. Nothing about it made sense.
Kegan was correct in xyr assumption that Evelyn didn’t have many fans, and xe wondered if xe was a bad person for thinking about such a thing like that when Evelyn was obviously a perfectly nice, normal person. Maybe xe needed more sleep and xe’d be less grouchy. Well, that solidified xyr plans for the night. “Fan mail?” Kegan repeated with a chuckle. “Weird. I thought that only happened in movies.” Xe had half a mind to offer to help Evelyn answer her letters, but that seemed to be overstepping the bounds of their acquaintanceship. Evelyn probably wouldn’t say yes anyways, since part of the joy of fan mail was getting a response from the actual person you wrote to, not just one of their lackeys.

Evelyn looked at him curiously, "Did lots of people tell you that when you were growing up?" Ev couldn't remember people ever saying that to her when she was growing up. She didn't know exactly where she got the idea that things would be easier as a grownup. Maybe she'd just assumed that after watching her parents. Her parents had a gift for making things seem easy and simple, which was something that Ev wanted to do someday. Maybe she'd figure that out. She nodded when he said one could never understand why good people have to die and then added, "As well as why it's so hard to find and catch the people who seem so determined to hurt others." Ev has never really thought about that much before, but with all the attacks at Hogwarts and at King's Cross, it was getting harder and harder to ignore. The whole situation made Ev feel a combination of sorrow and anger, but she didn't know if there was anything she could do to help. Or what that would be.
She snorted when Kegan mentioned fan mail and how he didn't think it was a real thing. "I didn't think it was real either until I started getting it. The nice thing is that it gives me something to do when I'm bored, but it's weird that people care enough to write." Honestly, fan mail made her feel awkward, but the way she saw it there wasn't much else for her to do about it than answer them.
