The night was shaping up to be even better than Jamie had originally expected. She had spent the better part of the night talking and dancing and smiling so much that her cheeks were actually beginning to really hurt. But she didn't care, because this was the best night that Jamie had had in a long, long while, and she got to share it with the people that she loved the most, both friends and family. She had been forced to take a break from dancing for a short time, though, both by her weakness due to the nearing full moon and her thirst from spinning around a warm room full of people. She was standing by the punch bowl with Edmund Windsor, sipping what must have been her third or fourth glass of punch. She had considered taking some champagne from the waiters, but it seemed to her a bad idea to add alcohol into the mix when she already wasn't feeling well. "Your sister looks happy, Ed." Jamie said, gesturing to where Susan was dancing with a boy that Jamie vaguely recognized. "Is Addi having a good time?" It was a bit of a digression from their previous, Quidditch-themed conversation, but Jamie hoped Edmund wouldn't mind.

Edmund never imagined that tonight would go as wonderfully as it was. He didn't like Balls. He knew it, as did his entire family, but being here with Addi made everything different. He loved the fact that he could dance with her and just feel like everything was the way it should be. His sisters were so busy with their own things that they didn't care what he was doing or who he was doing it with. Granted, he was just dancing, but he was glad that his sisters didn't see how much he actually liked dancing when it was with Addi.
However, at the moment he was taking a short respite. He could hardly believe this was the first time he was over at the refreshment table; he normally spent the whole time he was at balls hovering around these sorts of tables. He turned and smiled at Jamie when she mentioned his sister. He nodded as he looked across the floor, "She does," he agreed. Then he laughed, "I'm pretty sure she is. We just needed to take a short break. I don't think I've ever spent so time at a ball actually dancing. Are you enjoying yourself?" He asked curiously.

Will was at the castle for Christmas night. He was really there just to check in with his siblings, give them their Christmas gifts from he and his mother, and double check who was coming to the Royal Ball on New Years Eve and who was just going to stay at the school. His mum preffered that they all attend but Will was going to let his siblings decide for themselves. He was almost going to cancel because he and Isla had broken up, but then he ran into Claire and one thing led to another and now they would be going as friends. Plus, the queen expected him to be there.
He had already given Lucy her gift and eventually found Edmund talking to a pretty blonde girl off the the side. He wasn't surprised to see Edmund by the refreshment table, of course, Ed usually spent his time at balls over in that area. He made his way over to him, coming up behind the blonde girl, unable to see her face. He wasn't sure if he knew her or not.
"Ed!" he called as he got closer, stopping to stand across from him, a few feet away from Ed's friend. He turned to her, "hello, I'm Will. Ed's brother," he introduced.

Jamie was all smiles as she sipped her punch. Edmund agreed that his sister looked wonderful, and then said that Addi was having a great time, too. As far as she was concerned, that was all that mattered – that everyone was having a good time. She’d need to check in with Max, though she didn’t expect that her sister would mind all that much not having to dance for the rest of the night. Jamie wasn’t sure if she could dance much longer. She had thought that she was fine, but standing at the punch bowl was making her realize just how faint she really felt. It would be alright, though, because she was still having a great time – she would just sleep extremely well that night.
Jamie was about to respond to Ed and ask him another question about Addilyn, when she heard someone calling Ed’s name. A man, one that she recognized vaguely, came up to the pair of them, introducing himself as Ed’s brother. “Enchanting to meet you, Will.” Jamie said, feeling a blush rise in her cheeks despite the innocuous nature of her comment. Edmund’s brother was handsome, she thought to herself, her smile brightening slightly. “I’m Jamie. Ed and I know each other through Quidditch.”

Almost immediately after he asked Jamie what she thought of the ball, he heard a familiar voice coming from nearby. There was a time when Ed would have ducked and tried to escape at the mere hint of that voice, but things were better now. It was amazing to think that things had changed so much in such a short period of time, but he was glad they had. It was easier to be on good terms with Will. Granted, he wasn't sure if it would last long, but he was willing to try. "Will," Edmund greeted, actually smiling as his brother approached him and Jamie. There was a time when he would have been angry at his brother for interrupting them (even though it hadn't been that scintillating of a conversation), but he was glad to think that he wasn't angry now. He was actually a bit pleased to see his brother, though he would never admit it. He grinned when he noticed Jamie's blush and resisted the temptation to roll his eyes. Of course she would blush because of Will. Didn't everyone? Well, every girl that was. It was so commonplace that Will probably didn't notice things like that anymore. "I didn't expect to see you here, Will," Ed commented, wondering what his brother was doing here.

Of course Ed was so happy to see him. Still, Will was focused on his new acquaintance for a moment. And she was... something. Pretty. Unexpectedly. He should have just assumed so but, honestly, WIll didn't think about that stuff that much. Even know he'd had quite a busy love life this year, that didn't mean that romance was such a big deal to him. Still, he could appreciate when someone was attractive or... simply just radiated some kind of beauty he didn't understand. Like this girl did. Still, she looked a little unwell, too, but he wasn't sure if that was just because she was tired from dancing or something. "Jamie. Enchanted as well," he replied, his eyes lingering on hers for a moment before Ed spoke up again.
"Awe, yes. I wasn't planning on coming but I thought it'd be fun to do this in person," he held out a package to Ed, "from me and mum. If you don't want it right now I can just send it up to your room." He smiled, giving him a nod, "and I was wondering if you were attending the New Years Eve Royal Ball? Mum wants a final head count of who's coming. I'm taking Claire Slater," his eyes shifted to Jamie and then back to Ed almost instantaneously, "as a friend. We used to date and went out a few times this month but, eh, just friends now," he said with a smile.

Jamie watched as Ed greeted his brother, all smiles. She thought she remembered something her conversation with Edmund about him not getting along as well with all of his siblings, but maybe she had been wrong about that, or maybe they had grown past that. Jamie knew a thing or two about evolving relationships with siblings, and she wasn’t going to judge Ed for changing his relationship with his older brother for the better. Will returned her greeting, and Jamie smiled at him, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear as she held eye contact with Will perhaps a moment longer than was absolutely necessary.
“If I had known we were going to be exchanging gifts, I would have brought something.” Jamie said teasingly as Will produced a package for Edmund. Then there was something about a New Year’s Eve Ball, and Jamie raised her eyebrows. Another ball, so close to the Yule Ball? Then again, from the sound of it, it wasn’t a Ball that many people from Hogwarts would be attending, if it was royal. “Claire Slater.” Jamie repeated, glancing at Edmund. “That’s Addi’s older sister, isn’t it?” Jamie didn’t even realize her heart had dropped until it floated back up again when Will said he was only taking Claire to the Ball as a friend. “I’m sure you’ll have a great time.” Jamie added politely. “Is this a ball your family is hosting, then?” She hadn’t known that was the sort of thing royal families did.

Edmund almost felt like walking away, watching the way the two were interacting, but he didn't want to make things awkward. Well, more awkward. He smiled as Will held a package out to him, rolling his eyes at Jamie's quip about bringing her own gift. She should know he was teasing, right? "Thanks. Did you want me to open it here or would you mind if I send it up?" He asked curiously. If Will wanted to see his reaction to the present, he'd open it, but if not he would just send it. He didn't want to get attention from nearby people if it wasn't necessary. He nodded, "I am planning on coming. I was going to bring Addi with me too. We got the permission forms already." Ed wasn't sure if Will knew who Addi was, but he wasn't about to say: "I'm taking Addilyn Slater, your date's younger sister." Not unless he was forced to. Hopefully Jamie wouldn't give it away. And then she did! Ed wanted to groan when she asked if that was Addi's older sister. "Yes," he mumbled, hoping that Will hadn't heard her question, but not expecting it. Things never worked out that nicely for him. Despite his disappointment at Addi's last name being revealed (probably), Ed almost snorted when he heard Will explain that he was taking Claire as a friend. Smooth, man. Very smooth. Not! Then Edmund answered Jamie's question. "Well, it's a ball the Queen hosts. So, technically yes, family, but not immediate family family," he answered, not trying to be confusing but doing it all the same. So help him, if Will decided to try and explain it better Ed would definitely be tempted to punch him. He gave Will a warning look, hoping Jamie didn't see it and that Will understood what it meant.

Jamie spoke about how she would have brought gifts if she knew it was a thing right now, clearly teasing. Will chuckled, grinning at her, "maybe next time I'll write you and clue you in," he suggested. Then, Ed asked him what he preferred to the present and Will shrugged, "either way. I really don't mind," he said. He really didn't have a preference so... it was on Ed. Then Edmund said that he was bringing Addi along and Will's eyebrow raised higher than it ever had in his life, "wait... Addi Slater?" okay, so that was weird. All they needed was the brother and then they'd have the whole shebang. He knew that Addi and Edmund were good friends, but he didn't know they were that good of friends.
Jamie asked if Will's own date was Addi's older sister and Will was feeling even more confused by the second. He let Edmund go ahead and answer Jamie's question about who was hosting the ball, since he was still trying to wrap his head around this whole Slater business. Finally, he nodded, turning back to Jamie, "yes, the Queen is our Great Aunt so she's family and yeah, what Edmund said, excuse me Jamie," he said, gently tapping Jamie's arm before quickly turned back to Edmund, "you're taking Addilyn Slater to the Royal Ball?" He wasn't sure why he was so stuck on this one.

Jamie chuckled when Will said the next time he was going to be exchanging gifts he’d clue her in. “Tell your owl to go the Huffepuff common room. Anyone can find me in the Hufflepuff common room.” She said with a smile. She had told Edmund something similar not that long ago, about it being laughably easy to find her as soon as you were inside the Hufflepuff haven. Besides, this way she didn’t have to mention her last name, which was…oddly, something she didn’t want Will to know. And then everything seemed to get kind of messy and tangled, with Will figuring out that Edmund was going to the dance with Addi Slater. Was that not something that he had known already? Jamie turned to Edmund, eyes wide, and mouthed the word ‘sorry’, unsure what else she really could do. Well, she could always turn the conversation back to the Queen, which was going to be difficult. “Great-aunt, then?” She said brightly, not even caring that she wasn’t being subtle about her diversion. “Do you actually interact with her, then, or is it more of a symbolic thing?” Of all the things to make small talk about, Jamie had never expected she’d have to ask someone about their relationship with the Queen of England. This was so weird!

Ed was fighting to keep himself from grinning now. How had they gotten to the idea of writing one another so quickly? With the way things were progressing between these two already, he wouldn't be surprised if they actually did write one another. A part of him thought that was weird, but a larger part of him approved. Will needed to have a good person in his life. Ed didn't ever meet Isla, so he couldn't judge her, but he knew Jamie was a good person, so he considered it a good thing.
Ed flinched when Will recognized Addi's name. "Yes Addi Slater," he said quietly, wishing they didn't have to have this conversation now. Then Jamie jumped in and Ed wanted to hug her! She asked about the Queen, changing the subject before Ed had to say anything else. He smiled at her, mouthing a silent "thank you" before he took a few deep breaths, trying to figure out what he would say to Will when he inevitably brought the subject back to Addi. It was bound to happen, and did faster than he expected. Edmund blinked when Will basically brushed Jamie's question to the side, which was definitely not like him.
Ed glared at his older brother. Yup, this was the type of normal relationship he had with his older brother. "Why do you say it like that? You asked me to go and bring someone with me and I asked Addi. She's my best friend! Who else did you think I was going to invite to come with me to that stupid ball? At least with her I know I'll be able to enjoy myself." Yes, he was angry. Ed didn't want to be though. He was at the Yule Ball, Jamie was there and Addi was somewhere nearby, but this was completely ridiculous. Will had no right to get uptight about who Ed invited to the ball that he was being forced to attend. Sure, they said it was optional, but it never was. Ed was always forced to go.

Will nodded and grinned as Jamie directed his owl to her common room. "Hufflepuff. I'll remember that," and he would, too. He was definitely planning on remembering that. Then, Jamie tried to change the subject to the queen, but it didn't seem to work out very well. Of course, Edmund had his say about... well, not his say. More like he was getting upset with him, as per usual. Will stood there and took it before holding up a hand, "okay, enough," he said firmly, not realizing his other hand was still lightly rested on Jamie's arm from when he told her to excuse him a moment earlier.
He pulled his hand back and dropped both of them to his sides, nodding at Edmund. "No need to get snarky, Ed. It was just.... weird for a moment. Since I dated Claire back in my sixth year," he explained. "But that's all well and good and Addi is great. So, moving on then? Have you danced with anyone?" he started the question directed at Ed, but at the end he turned to Jamie.

Will said that he would remember she was in Hufflepuff, and Jamie’s heart skipped a beat. She grinned at him. “And if I want to owl you, I can just send it to the Queen of England, and she’ll make sure it gets into the right hands?” She asked with a chuckle. That would actually be seriously insane, but in the way a lot of Jamie’s life was seriously insane – that was, the best way. Edmund was a little huffy about having to go to the New Year’s Ball, and Jamie began to see a little of the disagreement with his siblings that he had told her about that. Will seemed to defuse the situation pretty neatly, which was good, because Jamie’s knowledge of the royal family was extremely limited, and she wasn’t sure if she could come up with any other royal relatives to small talk about. Her family was definitely not small talk material, so they would’ve been in a pickle.
Will asked if they had danced with anyone, and Jamie wasn’t sure which one of them it was address to, so she decided to answer for both herself and Ed. “Ed has been dancing with Addi.” She explained to will. “I’ve taken a few turns with my sister and a friend of the family’s.” Because saying she had danced with her ex-girlfriend’s mother was the wrong kind of seriously insane. “I wouldn’t say no to another dance, if you’re itching to make you way onto the floor.” Jamie said with a smile. “You’ll be fine here on your own, right, Ed?” She really hoped so, because even if Edmund asked her to stay, Jamie wasn’t sure that she would be able to.

There were days when Edmund felt like his relationship with Will was getting better and that they wouldn't need to fight with one another anymore. And then there were days when Edmund wouldn't mind never seeing his brother again. There were also days in between, which honestly were days when Edmund didn't see or hear from his brother and he felt indifferent. Today. Right now. He wished his brother would get swallowed up by a hole. "Okay, enough."? Really? Out of all the things he could have said or done to try and calm Ed down, that's what he decided on? To hush him, like he would a child or a dog. Typical. Ed felt the familiar rush of anger and he tried to keep it out of his expression, though if Addi was anywhere nearby she would know in an instant. Then it just got better and better when Will told him not to get snarky. Who was questioning who's date? Edmund hadn't said a thing about the fact that Will was taking Claire, his old girlfriend, but heaven forbid Ed explain himself (albeit in a very angry tone) and not get snarky about it. He watched his brother, stone-faced as he gave a flimsy excuse for his response. Then Will asked a question and Ed let Jamie answer. He didn't want to say anything. In fact, what was he doing here? While Jamie explained what the two had been doing thus far in the dance, Ed walked away quietly, heading outside as quickly as possible. He didn't want to cause a scene and he also didn't want to be around his brother for one moment longer. @jamie @william --- Ed out! ---

Will laughed, his hand resting on his stomach for a moment as he slightly bent forward, almost as if he was bowing. Always the gentleman. "Uh, try Windsor Castle, instead. It's a bit more direct," he explained, his laugh dying down. Then, of course, of course, Ed didn't say anything as William basically told him off. This was their relationship. Will sighed, but then looked back up at Jamie as she answered for both of them.
Wait, was she asking him to dance? Being all proper and Royal and all, that wasn't necessarily standard to Will. Not that she flat out asked but... it was still kind of refreshing, and slightly exciting. He turned to Ed as she addressed him, but his brother was already turning on his heel and walking away. "Ed-" Will sighed, his brother was far away now and wouldn't want Will to go after him anyway.
Will slowly turned back toward Jamie, "so, you wouldn't say no, eh?" may as well have some fun while he was here. "Dance with me?" he asked, holding out on hand while wrapping the other behind his back and giving a short bow.
