It was December 23rd and preparations for the Yule Ball were busier than ever. Callisto was given a break and, even though she normally didn't follow through with taking said breaks, she was actually ready for one. She slipped down to the kitchens in order to get a snack. She didn't actually know what time it was, and she was too scared to look. It could be very, very late at night, or very early in the morning... depending on how you looked at it. No, she was not planning to check.
She traversed through the familiar castle, seeing aurors on her way who occasionally checked her for dangerous things. She was used to being treated this way what with Hogwarts heightened security and with working at the Ministry. Finally, she found the portrait in the dungeons with the fruit bowl and she had arrived at the kitchens. She lifted a hand to tickle the pear, but before it could touch she heard a sound behind her. She spun around, wand in hand, "who's there?"

Spike was sitting in his potions classroom at his desk going through student's papers he had set them. It was his first years paper and he hoped there would be improvement from their first assignment. He could have done the marking elsewhere but he liked the cold in the dungeon especially in winter. It was also quiet due to everyone being elsewhere in the castle. He read one particular assignment which made him want to slam his head onto his desk, a student having no clue what they were talking about. He decided to take a break from his marking at the stage and looked at the clock, he seemed to have skipped lunch again which was a habit when he was busy. At least he was on the right floor to go to the kitchen and grab something to eat. He got up from his desk and left the potions classroom and headed towards the portrait to the kitchen.
Spike heard a noise in the kitchen, instantly grabbing his wand and heard a woman's voice speak, "Spike Constantine, who are you? I suggest you come out with your wand down as I am one hell of a dueller." He threatened. Spike knew it wasn't a student and he was going to read this person's mind if they did not appear. It was unexpected for him to find someone in the kitchen as the staff at Hogwarts knew other staff members went in and out the kitchen at times so his mind went instantly to someone trying to sneak into Hogwarts or do something to the food.

Spike Constantine. She recognized the name from Ministry records. She scoffed a bit as he said he was 'one hell of a dueler', because that was oh so necessary. She pointed her wand downward and came into view, raising an eyebrow at the staff member, "Callisto Wulfe," she greeted, giving a soft bow of the head but her eyebrows were knit together in her usual scowl. "I work upstairs with the International Office. Just grabbing a snack," she explained, her tone calm and orderly, easy to understand and hopefully not to misinterpret. Still, that scowl was pretty much etched into her face so she didn't relent that.
She tried to recall how she remembered that name, what department he worked in or used to work in for the Ministry. She hoped that it wasn't from a criminal list or something... but she would have known if it was. She remembered those names. No, she was sure she could trust this person. Didn't means she had to like their tone.

Spike lowered his wand as Callisto came into his view, someone who was in the Ministry he vaguely remembered when he was there. She had always seemed to be so grumpy when he saw her and he never knew why, it wasn't like she had the most difficult job in the Ministry but he was not about to say that out loud. "Potions professor here. I thought the Ministry folk weren't allowed around the castle without Hogwarts staff permission?" He pushed, "Besides sneaking around here is a bad idea with the threats out there, surely someone in the Ministry would know that?" Spike realised how much of an arse he sounded but he was a bit annoyed with her reaction earlier.
Spike barely knew the woman, he recognised the name and the face but had very little dealings with her at his time in the Ministry. He was one of the more popular Aurors as he got the job done but he normally did not socialise outside his department back in the day. He raised an eyebrow at Callisto waiting for an explanation to why she was wondering around the castle unattended. He knew it would be equivalent of him walking into the Ministry without an escort.

Callisto bristled at his tone. "I have permission. As well as several aurors giving me the go ahead on the way," she explained, trying to keep her tone level. She didn't like not being trusted but... such was the time. Plus, it was a school, it was important to know who was in the halls. For the kids safety. She knew that. "I do know,"s he said sharply, "but I can handle myself, sir. However, if my being here alone makes you uncomfortable, feel free to join me," she said, turning on her heel and tickling the pear on the painting until it turned into a door knob.
She opened the kitchen door and turned to look at him, "well?" she said, her tone more of a challenge than an invitation.

Spike glared at Callisto, he did not like her tone so decided to return the favour. "Yeah good for you that you say you have permission." Spike gave a glance into her eyes and saw she was speaking the truth, after all times like these he found it acceptable to read someone's mind, "Sure I will join you, I was going for a snack as well." He noticed the challenge and accepted it. He walked closer towards her, "Come on then, thought you wanted a snack."
Spike stood there and gave a sarcastic smile as he waited for her to begin walking.

Callisto could feel her blood starting to boil with this person. He was getting snarky with her and she was not in the mood. Actually she was never in the mood. Sass, joking and things of the like where not in her ballpark of things she tolerated well. He did say he was going to join her, though, and she gave him a short nod, as he walked toward her. He spoke and she narrowed her eyes at him for a moment before turning on her heel and walking into the kitchen.
At once the house elves were offering her things and she ordered a spinach wrap from them and went to sit by the fire while they prepared it. She knew better than to try and help them. While in school she'd tried and they just would not have it. She didn't turn to see what the man had ordered.

Spike watched as Callisto pulled a face, he knew he was getting to her and simply smiled. Now he would not normally wind someone up like this however she seemed to be an upper class snob in his opinion and was rude to him earlier on. He followed her as she made her way into the kitchen. He purposely walked loudly just to remind her he was there. He tried not laughing to himself and did feel childish doing this however some people deserved it in his mind.
Spike left her to order her food, when she moved to sit down he asked for a chicken sandwich. He gave a smile at the elf as he moved opposite Callisto and sat down. He took a breath, quite loudly and then ask, "So are you this grumpy with everyone or just with former Aurors?" He was trying to hide the smirk on his face. "I can give you a potion to calm down your agitation." He said it in a genuine voice to mask the sarcasm underneath it.

He was clearly being irritated on purpose, or he had the feet of an elephant. Soon he was moving to sit opposite her but she did not look over at him, but rather kept her eyes on the fire, even when he did breath so loudly. Then he spoke, and she looked up. Her face remained in a flat expression, almost uncaring, as he asked. Then he suggested a potion and her eye twitch, her lip line pursing even tighter, her lips almost disappearing.
"I just don't bother with strangers," she said firmly. Unless it's business, of course, but he didn't need to know that. "And I don't need any potion, thank you very much. Lord only knows what you'd put in it," she challenged, huffing and turning her eyes back to the fire.

Spike laughed when she basically accused him of putting some sort of poison in a potion. "Seriously love, you aren't worth losing my job for." He lent back on the chair, "Take it you did not do too great in potions class to know how to make Draught of peace." He smirked as he made the passing comment, he crossed his legs and lent forward with his elbows on his knees. He did find it odd that she thought of him as a stranger considering he spent 18 years in the Ministry and 15 of them working as an Auror. He guessed maybe not everyone in the Ministry knew who was an Auror as they were out a lot and mainly in the office to fill in paperwork. Those days he did slightly miss as he had quite a lot of freedom back then compared to now.
"So which department do you work in in the Ministry? I pretty much guessed not the reception as you are far too grumpy for that." He plainly stated and expected and half arsed response as she was clearly in some sort of mood or maybe it was her personality that had issues. He felt sorry for anyone she had to heal with putting up with her attitude. He hoped he would never have to receive treatment from her ever in his life as she'd probably do it wrong on purpose.

He laughed and that just made her skin burn. He was being so laid back that she immediately had to be the opposite, sitting up straight and not letting a sound escape her. He said she, love, wasn't worth losing his job over and then making some snooty pun about potions and the draught of peace. "I was excellent at potions," she retorted, even though that clearly wasn't his point at all. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and she instinctively leaned back.
He asked which department she worked for, giving another hit at her 'grumpy' nature by saying she couldn't be reception. She rolled her eyes, enjoying a nice, sweet bite of her food before responding after it was all chewed and swallowed. "International Magical Trading. I also am a part-time Healer th-" she stopped, raising both eyebrows slowly, "you were an auror," she recalled.

Spike let out another laugh when Callisto mentioned she had been excellent at potions. He never doubted she had not been good at the subject but he had to get a jab in there as she was obviously getting annoyed with him. When his sandwich arrived he took a bite out of it, might as well eat here instead of taking it back to his classroom to eat. Callisto answered his question and before she finished she mentioned about him being an Auror. A smile apperared on his face, "Yep, 15 years as a Full Time Auror. I picked up you were a healer as I'm pretty sure you have had to fix me up before." To him international trading seemed a boring job but then not everyone would want to live in exciting life as an Auror. "I was the sarcastic Auror who seemed to never listen to advice, a lot more cockier in my youth." He admitted before taking another bite from his sandwich.
Spike did wonder how many knew in the Ministry the reason why he left and moved to be a Hogwarts professor. He guessed he was a some sort of Vigilante but with a full time job as he always tried getting leads on the dark group of wizards he was after before he left. Still he was not going to not stop winding Callisto up just because she might know him however he might leave it for a bit whilst he ate. "So got any good trade agreements sorted?" He asked curiously as he took another bite. Spike had all sorts of scars and marks on him from his Auror days and some incident landed him longer in St Mungos than others such as when getting poisoned at a pub in Hogsmede.

More laughing. Her hair was standing on end on her arms and on the back of her neck. She wanted to growl, but she didn't. She wasn't an animal like the rest of her lovely family. He answered her words, confirming that he was an auror full time for fifteen years. Then he said that she'd fixed him up before and she slowly nodded, "I'm in Spell Damage," she explained, "we get a lot of aurors through there... I've only been there four years though, so I'm not sure I saw the 'youth' part of your career," she actually wasn't even meaning to make a jab at his age or anything.
Then he asked if she had any trade agreements sorted and her eyes narrowed, wondering why he cared about her work at all. "Well, mostly dealing with the tournament right now... lots of international issues," she explained, taking another bite of her own food.

Spike laughed when Callisto mentioned about not being there during his youth part of his career. That was pretty obvious considering Spike's age and he was sure no one would fast track someone to be a healer that quickly, "I'm not that old, thirty something. I would be worried if you were around during my young adulthood I'm at least a decade older than you. Would have been too complexed to fix some of my injuries." Spike joked as he took another bite from his sandwich when he had swallowed, "Think the worst thing I've done was chasing after a dark wizard last year, ended up nicely poisoned from that. No idea what they used but one moment running and next on the floor in agony whilst coughing up blood." His face looked rather grim when recalling that memory, "Wonderful thing what healers can do. Apparently managed to split a bone quite nicely in my leg." He said it like it was no big deal and it was a normal thing to be injured like that, "I swear I got more injured doing this job compared to playing Quidditch back in Hogwarts." Spike was not known to be gentle when playing Quidditch either.
He was curious about her experience as a healer, "So what is the worst injury you have had to heal? Don't hold back love." He took another bite, it was difficult to put Spike off from food or anything as he had experienced a lot in his life. He was not really too interested in the details of the tournament but thought it was only polite to ask, "So what sort of international issues are you experiencing?" He questioned, he couldn't imagine it was much probably to do with the safety at Hogwarts and what not. Durmstrang students would be able to defend themselves, maybe a few Hogwarts students as well so it was mainly down to his ignorance in the matter of not knowing issues and he was not sure how obvious that was.

There was his laugh again. It seemed like it was normally infectious but... she was not feeling infected. He said he was thirty something, which didn't sound that old compared to her being twenty something. She did, however, crack a small smile as he spoke about how his injuries would be too complex for her to heal back then. "I don't know, I was very good at magic very quickly," it was an attempt at a joke in response, but her tone didn't come out that lighthearted.
She grimaced as he mentioned being poisoned, setting down her sandwich that she was about to take a bite out of. He spoke about how the healers were wonderful with their skills and managed to split a bone in his leg. Her eyes widened slightly, right before he spoke about being more injured now that compared to Quidditch. She wanted to say 'well, obviously', but someone she bit her tongue on that one. "Well, I'm glad you're not coughing up blood now," she said flatly, instead. Because that was oh-so-much better.
He asked her what her worst injury she's had to heal was, telling her not to hold back. She considered for a moment, thinking back on all of the things she'd dealt with over the few years of her experience. "Well... there was this nasty spell used on one of the kidnapped students back in April," she started slowly. "It looked like a sword was slashed across them, but incredibly slowly. He said it had been all healed up but about two weeks after they were rescued it somehow started acting up again. Just slowly slicing him open," she shuddered, "luckily, our healers reversed the process and he's all right now, but that was the most fascinating case," she finished.
Then he was asking about her international job. "Just stuff here at the school, mostly. At least that's what I'm supposed to focus on."
