Dom assumed that he didn’t like people, and Shay shook his head a little. That wasn’t quite right. “P-people j-just…” Intimidate him? Frustrate him? Annoy him? All three? “Th-they’re h-hard t-to f-figure out.” Shay finally said. People were mind-boggling complicated, and that was what made them so difficult for Séamus. It was hard to know how to approach people when you were shy and also didn’t understand them at all. There was also the fact that a lot of people Shay interacted with hated him on principle, which wasn’t the best thing when you wanted to make the whole ‘people are good for you’ argument. Dom continued on that he wouldn’t like her since she wasn’t quiet, and Séamus lifted his shoulder in a shrug. There were good and bad kinds of loud, too, but he didn’t want to have to explain his whole philosophy behind noise to Dominique, especially since he’d probably just give up halfway through because of the stutter. Dom said that she might submit her questions in writing, and Séamus shrugged again. It would be interesting for him if she did, that was certain. He wasn’t, however, into the idea of her ambushing him so that she could ask him her questions in person. That sounded like his own personal circle of hell. “D-don’t expect answers if you d-do th-that.” Shay answered. She was being honest with him, so he was going to be honest right back.
Dom said that she could try to help him, and Séamus nodded to himself as he tried to figure out what to say. The bad part about Shay’s lack of verbal eloquence was that even when he had someone offering to help him, he had no idea how to articulate what he actually needed help with. It was one of the reasons he had never sought out a tutor despite the urging of his professors. When Dom asked him what he was having a hard time with, Shay was particularly stumped. There were a lot of things he was having a hard time with, but the main one was that none of this reading seemed to be at all related to the spells they had been casting in class. The mammalian respiratory system was all well and good, but Séamus didn’t think he needed to know that to know how to Transfigure a mouse into a snake. “I d-don’t understand wh-why any of th-this m-matters.” He said, sliding the book over to Dom so she could see it if she wanted. Maybe she would understand why Séamus was confused better than he would.

Apparently it wasn't that he didn't like people. Huh. Something about this guy was evading Dom. Unlike him- apparently- she normally didn't have a hard time figuring people out at all. She got along with practically anyone and knew people in generally. Usually she could find a way to convince people to do what she wanted, generally by making them feel at ease and then slowly convincing them to come to her point of view. That was a Slythering trait, her sister had informed her, but Dom's love for learning definitely made her a Ravenclaw. Even so, Séamus didn't make much sense to her and that was simultaneously fascinating and frustrating. At the moment she decided to focus on the fascinating side of it. She shrugged, temporarily at a loss for words. How could she say people weren't hard to figure out to her without sounding arrogant, and to the one person that didn't make sense to her. "Flowers are easier?" She asked, hoping that she was right this time. Being wrong wasn't something she particularly liked at all. He didn't answer her for a while, until she said that she might ask him questions in person and then he told her to not expect answers. How rude! Not that Dom thought he was trying to be rude, but would he really ignore her if she came up to him and started talking? Her eyebrows puckered a little bit. She wasn't angry, but she was trying to figure him out a little bit, so her face went into full-on-focusing Ravenclaw mode. "So if I saw you outside of the library and came up to talk to you, you wouldn't talk with me?" Dom asked in a soft voice, once more trying to figure him out. Maybe she would send him an owl with questions ... at least that way he might answer her, though she didn't know why it mattered so much. Probably just because no one had ever refused to talk with her before.
He didn't really explain what was wrong, instead sliding the book over so she could take a look at it. Dom glanced at the page quickly. Right, respiratory systems. Transfiguration. It would help if she actually knew what he was supposed to be studying for, since there were a number of reasons you might want to know about respiratory systems when Transfiguring something. Dom looked up at him, "What are you supposed to Transfigure?" She asked. It was only after she asked her question that his comment about it not mattering registered in her mind. She looked at Séamus curiously. "Maybe they think knowing the theory behind it will help us be able to perform the spells better?" Dom asked slowly. Wasn't that obvious? Then again, he wasn't a Ravenclaw, so maybe it wasn't. Whenever she was having a hard time with a spell, she looked into the theory of it. Did other people not do that?

Séamus nodded when Dominique suggested that flowers were easier. He probably could have elaborated more about that preference, but it felt silly to explain anything more. Dominique probably wouldn’t understand anyways. Then she asked if he would talk to her if they saw each other outside of the library, and Shay shrugged. “D-depends on th-the d-day.” He said. There were some days when he really didn’t want to talk to people, and he didn’t want to promise something that he wouldn’t be able to follow up on. “I’ll t-try, though.” Séamus decided to add. He did like Dominique, so he would probably try harder to talk to her than he would with one of his less nice classmates. “B-but if y-you ask m-me qu-questions…” Séamus said, trailing off. He would try to be nice, but it was hard to be nice when you were scared or annoyed or frustrated.
“Tr-transfiguring a m-mouse into a s-snake.” Séamus answered, pointing to the part in the page where that specifically was discussed. “I d-don’t d-do th-theory.” Séamus said with a sigh when Dom suggested knowing the theory behind spells would help make them easier. “I j-just d-do.” He did the spells and he did them right, and they worked. Did it matter if he understood it?

Dom’s head cocked to the side when he said it depended on the day. Seriously? She’d never had anyone say something like that to her before and she didn’t like it. Dom enjoyed making strangers into friends and knowing that when she saw them next, they would feel comfortable enough around her to talk with her. This guy- Séamus- wasn’t agreeing to that and she found herself slightly annoyed, but she refused to show it. If anything, she took his refusal to say that he might not talk to her as a challenge. She nodded when he said that he’d try. “That’s good to know,” she commented dryly but with a smile on her face. “Wait, if I’m not allowed to ask you questions, what am I supposed to say?” Dom asked, only realizing after she’d spoken the question that it was, in fact, a question. Hopefully he’d answer that one though, because Dom didn’t know what she’d say to him next time she met him if he didn’t tell her.
Dom listened, looking to the place where he was pointing and nodding. He said he didn’t do theory and she could understand that. Lots of people got confused with transfiguring one creature into another. Then she froze, looking up at him curiously. “Wait. You just do? Does that mean you do it without knowing the theory?” That was a foreign concept to Dom, who carefully studied theory before trying almost any kind of magic. She wasn’t sure if she could do it without looking into the theory because she’d never tried. She’d never even thought of it before. It seemed she had a new thing she wanted to try, so long as that was something he actually did. If someone else could do it, Dom was determined to figure it out.

Shay blinked slowly at Dominique when she asked what she was supposed to say if she couldn’t ask him questions. Questions weren’t necessary to conversation, were they? Conversations were just a series of loosely connected statements. Besides, Shay had only said that Dom couldn’t ask questions, not that she couldn’t answer them. And there was also the fact that Séamus didn’t mind answering questions, he just didn’t like being interrogated. He shrugged at her question and then continued on.
“Uh, y-yeah.” Séamus answered when Dominique asked, slightly incredulous, if he did the spells without knowing the theory. He had made a mistake or two, sure, but event he people who did know the theory made mistakes, too, so Shay didn’t often dwell on them. “It’s b-been g-going well so f-far.” Séamus said with a shrug. He had passed his O.W.L.s, at least, which had been one of his many fears during his fifth year. Of course, next year N.E.W.T.s were going to be even harder, but since Shay only really needed to pass his Herbology N.E.W.T., he wasn’t going to let himself get too worked up about them. It helped that his parents didn’t know what the wizarding grading system was like, because they assumed that the As he got in Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts were good marks instead of poor ones.

He didn't answer her question. Though that wasn't really a surprise, considering he just told her that he didn't like questions. Still, Dom was a little irritated. She didn't take well to being ignored, by anyone, and Séamus was no exception. It was just plain rude! But she wasn't going to make a big deal about it now. She wanted to make a good enough impression that he wouldn't mind if he ran into her another time. If he kept ignoring her questions in the future, then she'd say something.
Dom shook her head, slightly disbelieving when he said that he could do the spells on their own. Not that she didn't believe him, she just couldn't believe that she'd never thought of doing that on her own! Annoying. Granted, knowing that it could be done just meant that Dom was going to have to try that. "That sounds really cool!" She told him with a smile, hoping it would put him more at ease. "But I can understand why our professors wouldn't like that. They don't want most of their students trying to do it that way, I'm sure." Not that that helped him, really. Dom wasn't really sure what she could tell him to help him. She could quote the textbook, but that wasn't helpful. "Do you want me to try and explain it easier?" She asked, not sure if he wanted to just let it go or actually try it.

Shay was honestly surprised when Dominique said that his way of doing things sounded cool. Most people turned their noses up at him and his inability to do good bookwork, preferring to call him stupid instead of trying to understand where he was coming from. Dom seemed to pick up on that fact, too, saying that professors liked it when students did things their way. That was definitely the truth. From what his parents had said about Muggle schools, they were similar in the way that they often pigeon-holed kids into doing things the way that the teachers wanted them to be done. Dominique asked if he wanted her to explain it in an easier manner, and Shay nodded his head enthusiastically. “Pl-please.” He said hopefully.

Really, Dom was curious to see Séamus in action. He obviously didn't understand the theory, which was really the only reasonable explanation for his frustration, but she wanted to see him transfigure the mouse into a snake. Shame she didn't have any mice. He looked so hopeful at her offer and Dom was determined to do her best to help him. "Of course," she said with a smile, leaning closer to him and moving the book between them so she could use the pictures if she needed as she explained the transfiguration process. Once she was done, she leaned back a little and relaxed. "I hope that helped, because I really don't know how else to explain it," she said. She hesitated only a second before asking her next question. "So ... I'm going to take the book now. Hope you don't mind," she said with a wide smile before picking the book up and walking away. As she was about to turn a corner she turned back and wave. "See you later Séamus."---end--- @seamus
