So Séamus did know a lot about it, but then he brought up his "hatred for talking" as he put it. Did that mean he wouldn't want to explain it to her if she asked? Dom really had no idea and she didn't want to try to figure it out so she decided to just ask him. "So do you just like to study it, or would you be willing to explain it to someone if they asked." Woah. That was vague, for Dom. Naturally, she figured he'd assume she was talking about herself, and she was, but she didn't say it outright, which wasn't a normal thing for her.
She wasn't surprised when Séamus didn't want her to introduce him to Ranger and nodded her head to show she understood. She smiled when he mentioned her finding him at the ball. "I'm sure I could, as long as you don't mind. I have a knack for being able to spot people." Really, Dom was very good at finding people in a crowd, so she didn't see that as a challenge at all.

“D-depends on w-who asks.” Séamus answered when Dominique asked if he’d be willing to explain the language of flowers to her. He’d probably be willing to explain it to her, and maybe to a few other people, but there was one obstacle in the way no matter who he explained it to. “If th-they d-don’t kn-know a l-lot about f-flowers it c-could be h-hard.” He told Dom. Trying to explain to someone what something meant when they didn’t know what the something was was the surest way to induce a headache, and Shay wouldn’t want that for himself or for his hypothetical student.
Dominique didn’t seem to be offended by the fact that he didn’t want to meet Ranger, which was good. If she had been talking to him as long as she had and didn’t realize it wasn’t because of a vendetta against Ranger but rather because of Shay’s own shyness, he would probably have to doubt her placement in Ravenclaw again. “I p-probably w-won’t m-mind.” Shay said when Dom said that she could indeed come see him at the Yule Ball. “As l-long as you d-don’t.” He added. Dom had said it was her plan to talk to lots of people, but he still didn’t want her taking time out of her fun on his account.

She should have expected that kind of an answer, honestly. Of course he wouldn't just say yes or no. She shrugged a shoulder, asking the inevitable. She'd been vague long enough. "What if I asked?" She wasn't asking. This was still hypothetical, but if she got to a point in the school year where she decided she wanted to know, she didn't want to get turned down. "Ooooh, just kidding then. I don't know very much about flowers, so that would probably be annoying." Maybe she should look up flowers first or something. Or just decide to learn about something else. Why the sudden interest in flowers?
She smiled when he said that it probably wouldn't be a problem. She took that as a yes. He didn't say no, so it was a yes. "Of course I don't mind," she told him, chuckling a little bit. "After all, if I'm searching you out, wouldn't that mean I want to?" Hopefully that didn't make him awkward, but oh well. He was still talking with her and this wasn't the weirdest thing she'd said, so it was fine.

Séamus was opening his mouth to tell Dominique that he would teach her if she asked, when she cut him off by saying that she didn’t know much about flowers and thus wouldn’t be a good student. “Th-there are b-books in the l-library.” Shay offered. He knew that Dom could be very persistent when she was looking for her books, so mentioning that there was a book on the subject was worthwhile, in his opinion. “And m-maybe th-then…?” He offered quietly, not wanting to push if Dom didn’t actually have an interest in learning about flowers in the first place.
“I d-didn’t th-think of th-that.” Shay admitted. That was why she was the Ravenclaw and he wasn’t, he thought to himself. But he didn’t need to be in Ravenclaw, Séamus reminded himself. He had a duty to be in Slytherin, where he could prove that his heritage had nothing to do with his magical skill. “I’ll see you th-there, I g-guess.” He said, even though neither of them were making to leave, and there wasn’t any need to establish when they would see each other next.

He didn't answer her question about teaching her, but that might have been because she interrupted a bit. Whoops. She'd probably need to try and tone that down more if she did stuff with him. She didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable by jumping in when he was trying to talk. Other people would probably appreciate it if she worked on that too. She smiled when he suggested she study flowers. "So once I recognize some of the flowers I'll check with you and see if you've changed your mind about teaching me what they mean or not," she teased. He probably think she wasn't going to do it, but in all honesty Dom probably would. It would give her something else to do, other than focusing on her NEWTs. Done.
Dom smiled and nodded her head, "Just be ready for it." She thought for a second, realizing that the hype of the evening might make her a little more enthusiastic than he would be comfortable with. "Actually, you really might want to prepare yourself. I'll probably be very excited." And loud and cheerful, probably overbearing, but she wasn't going to say all that out loud. She'd probably scare him off, which would be sad because he was here first. If anyone left, it should be her.

Dominique seemed to have accepted that she was going to need to learn flowers before Séamus could teach her anything of use. She mentioned something about changing his mind, and Shay blinked at her. He had technically never said no to her – just said that it would be more difficult with any student who didn’t have the same basic knowledge of flowers as he did. If she wanted to shape that as a rejection, Shay wouldn’t argue with her, but he hadn’t meant for it to be one.
“I w-was b-born r-ready.” The Slytherin replied when Dominique said he ought to be ready for whatever enthusiastic greeting she would give him when they were at the Ball. Shay looked around nervously. “I sh-should g-get b-back to w-watering.” He told Dom, putting back on his gardening gloves and picking up the watering can that he had been using earlier. “H-have a n-nice d-day, D-Dom.” Shay said before ducking into the next row of plants to continue his task.

Dom laughed when Séamus said he was born ready. He was funny, which was something she hadn't expected. Then he turned back around and seemed to focus on the flowers. "Alright. You have fun watering," she said as she turned and moved to the doors of the greenhouse. She'd been inside long enough that it wouldn't be a problem, right? Maybe she'd find someone outside and bury them in snowballs. That would be fun. "You too, Séamus," she said right before she opened the door and walked outside. ---end--- @seamus
