Emmy started explaining all about the houses at her school in detail and Rory listened with interest. He wasn't a Ravenclaw by any means and probably wouldn't retain everything that she was telling him, but he would remember the important things. Like the fact that it was rare to be chosen by three houses, and the fact that she chose the house that was for adventurers. He wasn't surprised by that at all. He chuckled slightly when she said the only one that didn't want her was the one for healers. That would be his. He didn't even know what the other two were for, but it was almost certain Rory would be with the healeres. Then she asked about Hogwarts. "I was in Hufflepuff," he started off, trying to think of a way to explain it. "It's more the house for people that are loyal and hard working and patient than anything else." That probably wouldn't make sense. "The other three houses are houses for bravery, intelligence and cunning, so mine is kind of the house for whoever doesn't fit or doesn't want to be a part of the other ones." Rory cringed a little bit. That was a terrible explanation. She probably was going to think poorly of Hogwarts because of it, but he didn't know what else to say, so he left it at that. If she had more questions he'd answer them.
He loved her smile. It had been so long since Rory last had the chance to see Emmy's smile that he'd forgotten, but the memories were coming back in full force right now. He loved it. Then someone ran past, trying to steal from her. Rory stared at them for a second in disbelief. Did they really think they'd be able to get away with it? At Emmy's cry, Rory started running, but not before he pulled out his want. He started muttering spells under his breath, trying to freeze or halt the person, but either he had terrible aim or they kept using the shield charm to block him. After a few seconds he shot a burst of water out of the end of his wand, hoping to get it under the thief's feet and trip him or make him slip. However, with water shooting out of the end of his wand, Rory couldn't see whether or not it had the desired effect on his target.

Rory explained about the Hogwarts houses, saying he had been put in Hufflepuff. That was a funny name, but Emmy tried her best not to laugh so as not to make Rory sad. Emmy didn’t think that she’d do very well in Hufflepuff – she was all for loyalty and all of that, but that lacked…adventure and pizzazz. She’d probably end up in the house for bravery, or maybe cunning, since she did make at least a part of her living (the greater part of her living, if she was honest) from writing books about murders, and she liked to pretend that it required some degree of cunning, to trick the readers in the way she needed to. Emmy was going to ask Rory what house he thought she belonged in when she was distracted by the whole chase situation. Rory was much more on top of things than she was – well, at least he was firing spells, while Emmy was mostly just seething. Rory’s blast of water seemed to slip up the thief just long enough that Emmy was able to shout a spell at him. “Stupefy!” The thief fell back onto his back, and Emmy marched over to him to pluck the stolen dragots out of his hand. “Don’t mess with an angry Scottish woman.” Emmy told him with a sniff. “Roman, call the police.” She instructed Rory. She wasn’t sure how the whole contact law enforcement worked in this neck of the woods, so she would trust Rory to make sure that the proper authorities were notified.

The moment Emmy's spell hit the thief, Rory cast a quick patronus, sending it to the Ministry to get the proper authorities. He knew it would take less than a minute for them to arrive to take care of the situation. He smiled when Emmy instructed the man to not mess with her and then told him to get the police. "It's already taken care of, Em," he told her, grinning when he heard three popping sounds and a few men apparated nearby, walking straight toward the thief in question. Rory moved back over to Emmy, touching her elbow lightly as he tried to direct her out of the foot traffic. "So what do you want to do, now that we've already had our excitement for the day?" he teased. Really, Rory didn't care what he did as long as it was with Emmy. He knew that he was in for an entertaining, fun afternoon all around.

Emmy watched, impressed, when Rory summoned policemen to his side easily enough. She wasn’t sure if they were actually called the police, but whatever. Rory had understood what she had meant, and now there was someone else there to intimidate the thief, though Emmy was sure that he wasn’t going to forget her Stunning spell anytime soon. Rory guided them both out of the way of the passersby, some of which had stopped to see the thief apprehended, but the majority of which just kept happening. Rory asked what she wanted to do now, and Emmy frowned. “I should probably be getting back to my apartment…” She said, glancing at Rory apologetically. It wasn't getting late or anything, but she didn't want to leave all of her belongings (and money) unattended, especially not after what had just happened. “But it was…it was really good to see you, Rory.” That was the understatement of the year, but Emmy was still working on the whole ‘showing emotions’ thing.

She wanted to go. It wasn't that big of a deal and it shouldn't mean so much to Rory, but he didn't want her to. He'd just found her again, after all, and wasn't ready to see her go. Then again, he didn't want to annoy her. Maybe she needed some of her own space? He couldn't help but try and prolong the experience. "Can I walk you back?" He asked before realizing that she was probably planning on apparating. Darn it. "You too, Em." I've missed you. He didn't really say it, but he wanted to. Em was a bigger part of him than Rory really cared to admit to anyone else because they simply would not understand. Now that she was back in England maybe they'd become a bigger part of one another's lives.

Rory asked if he could walk her back, and Emmy nodded. “I’m living in an apartment not far from Diagon Alley.” She informed him. It had only been a few blocks of a walk, and it would probably be nice to get to spend just a little while longer with Rory, even if Apparating would have been quicker. Emmy wasn’t quite sure what she could say to him, though. How did one explain that they had become a writer because they wanted adventures that they couldn’t have without their best friend? And then there was the matter that he was the answer to the mystery that everyone was trying to solve, and…and did he even know she was an author? “It’s going to be weird to be together again.” Emmy admitted. The good kind of weird, but weird nonetheless. And walking home with him was going to be weird, too, because the last time they had walked together, she had been announcing that she was leaving. Everything had changed, but at the same time…nothing had really changed at all.

Rory smiled when she said she was living nearby. That meant that walking wasn't that big of a deal and he could spend more time with her. Honestly, he was just so excited to have her nearby. Obviously it had been years since she moved away, but they'd kept in pretty good contact and Rory missed her. He still couldn't believe she was standing here in front of him. He cocked his head to the side and looked over at he rwhen Emmy mentioned that it would be weird for them to be together again. "Why weird?" He asked, a little hurt that she would say that but trying not to let it show. Did she not want to do things with him? She didn't need to feel obligated to spend time with him if she didn't want to, but he wasn't going to tell her that. It would be awkward. Maybe he'd give her distance to show her he didn't expect her to spend all her time with him like he did when they were children.

Rory asked why it would be weird for them to be back together, and Emmy half-considered just repeating what she had just thought. She took more time with her words, though, trying to find a good way to say what she meant while they ambled along. “Everything’s different now.” They were both magical, for one thing, and they weren’t kids anymore. She was an author, and he was a – had she asked what he was doing now? No, she hadn’t. Maybe next time they saw each other. But they were magical, and they were grown up, and they were in London, not Scotland…But they were still them. They were still Emmy and Rory. “But you’re the same.” He wasn’t the scrawny kid she had left behind by any stretch of the word, but there was a certain Rory-ness to him, which had been how she was able to recognize him after seventeen years apart. “I guess that some things never change.” And she meant that in the best way, even if it didn’t sound that way.

Rory was trying really hard not to let his emotions get the better of him, but he was really struggling with that. So things were weird because they were different? What did that mean? Different how? He was still Rory, and she was still Emmy, his best friend. Or had that changed somewhere along the line without him realizing it? He didn't know what to think. Maybe she just meant different as in they were older. That was certainly true. All Rory really knew was that seeing her again made things feel whole and he just wanted to see her again and again. He missed her all those years. Then she said he was the same and that things would never change and Rory didn't know what to think. He gave her a wry smile, "I'm still me," he told her, trying to sound normal. She said some things never changed and Rory smiled, "I hope so. I mean, you are my best friend." Even if seeing her again made him think that he might want something more, even if he did want to be closer to her than he ever had been before, he wasn't going to push her. Heck, for all he knew she was already in a relationship with someone. She was amazing enough that he wouldn't be surprised if she was.

Emmy chuckled at Rory when he said that he was still him, smiling wryly at her. “Yes, you are.” Emmy agreed, tousling his hair with her free hand. “Which means you’re still an idiot.” She giggled. Rory was silly and sometimes he was a little idiotic, but he was still her Rory. Her best friend. Even though she thought of him that way, Emmy was surprised to hear that Rory considered her his best friend, too, after all these years. Like she had said – some things never changed, and that was one of them. “Good to know you haven’t replaced me yet.” Emmy said, bumping her shoulder against Rory’s lightly as they walked. She didn’t think she would replace Rory, either, but she had thrown in the ‘yet’ just in case. Emmy was half-tempted to ask Rory what he was doing for a job these days, but then she would have to admit that she was an author, and that wasn’t something that she wanted to mention just yet. Besides, they were getting close to her apartment, so it would be a bad to move on to a whole different conversation. Instead Emmy just allowed silence to wash over them, a rare treat when it came to spending time with her.

She was laughing, messing his hair up and calling him an idiot. Same old Em. Rory forced a smile and a chuckle at her. He couldn't argue with that, she'd been calling him an idiot for years, even in their owls. He shook his head when she mentioned him replacing her. "I couldn't ever replace you, Em." he told her simply. She was the one person who truly knew him better than anyone else and Rory knew that he'd never find someone else to understand him the way she did. She was his best friend. Still, he heard her mention yet and couldn't help but wonder whether or not she'd replaced him, yet again. She didn't seem to want to talk about things, preferring silence and Rory decided not to break it. It was nice to spend some quiet time with her.

Rory said that he couldn’t ever replace him, and Emmy turned to look at him. “I know.” She said, smiling teasingly. “And I couldn’t ever replace you either, ya numpty.” She said. Just then, Emmy’s apartment building came into sight, and she wished, for just a moment, that she could lie to Rory and say that it was a few more blocks down, so that she didn’t have to go. She lived on the first floor, too, so it wasn’t even like they could walk up the stairs together or something. When they reached the front door, Emmy stopped in her tracks. “This is the place.” She said, even though Rory already had probably guessed that. She didn’t want to be the first one to say goodbye, though, so she just stood there, waiting for Rory to say something.

Rory smiled when Emmy said that she couldn't replace him either. He'd suspected it up to this point, but he hadn't been certain, so it was oddly relieving to hear her say it outright. He walked with her to the front door, suspecting that this was where she lived, since it was obviously where she was headed. She said this was the place and Rory nodded. "It was great to see you Em. I've missed you." He paused, not really sure of what else he could or should say. "Let me know when you want to do something. I'm generally pretty available." At least, he could work around his schedule at St. Mungo's. Not many adults had schedules as fluid as his was. He moved forward to give her a hug. They were best friends, so that was acceptable, right?

Emmy smiled when Rory said it was good to see her, and that he had missed her. “I missed you too.” She would keep saying that until it wasn’t true, until she couldn’t miss him anymore because she saw him all the time. “I’ll send you an owl.” Emmy promised. And it was strange, because she could send him an owl, now that she knew he was a wizard, and it would be quicker than the postal system, and more convenient than finding a computer she could e-mail him from. Emmy’s schedule was fairly flexible, too, so she had a feeling she and Rory were going to be spending a lot of time together. Just not now. Emmy returned Rory’s hug, and then raised her hand in farewell before ducking into the apartment building, before she could do something embarrassing or make the goodbye even more strange.

Rory watched as Emmy waved and then walked into her apartment. It was strange, seeing her again and realizing that they had more in common than they'd ever thought, but a freeing kind of strange. He didn't have to pretend to his best friend anymore. He could really be himself and that was a relief. He walked away slowly, thinking about their reunion and chuckling. Of course it would be something dramatic like this. That was the way things tended to work out when he was around Emmy. He was excited to have more adventures with her.
