He thanked her for agreeing to read the letter and she just nodded. Then he asked why she always lectured him when she was 'afraid he was going to run away'. Her words caught in her throat for a moment, and she didn't say anything at first but instead shook her head a tiny bit. She took a step back, "I don't... I just want to look after you, I guess. Even if I'm not... there... physically," she explained, biting down on her lip when she was done speaking.
Her throat felt dry, and she swallowed hard. At first she thought it was because of her thirst for blood, but she knew that wasn't it. It was the emotional charge in the room, like that moment right before you know lightning could strike. Hair standing on end, everything suspended.

“It’s not your job to look after me, Rai.” Poe said gently. “It’s not your job to take care of anyone but yourself.” And the same thing went for him. When he had been their trainer, yes, it had been his responsibility to make sure that Rai and Finn were safe, but now, his own well-being was supposed to be ahead of theirs – with supposed to be functioning as the operative words. He was still trying to keep them safe, which was why this conversation was still happening. “I came back last time, and I’ll come back again. I just need…space.” He didn’t need much of it either – just a couple of feet and a couple of days, and he’d bounce back. Maybe that was overly optimistic, but he could hope that just as suddenly as he had realized he loved her, he would realize he didn’t love her anymore.
