In the days just succeeding the New Year, Irina felt like she was in a little bit of a funk. She and Dan had agreed to separate while he got his head together, and she understood why he needed it. His December had been a personal form of hell for his ability, and it was better for both of them that they stayed apart while he sorted through how to forge forward. It didn’t mean she didn’t miss him terribly though. Going from seeing him every day to making a point not to was tugging at her heart, and she didn’t like the way it made her feel. She knew she had to be strong though, for him. She knew she could be a better person too - she needed to be a better sister, a better friend, a better daughter. She’d already started the last bit by writing a long letter to her mother, saying everything a daughter in need of her mother would say. She’d cried a bit while writing it, but her tears had dried up by the time she got to the Owlery and sent Arthur on his way. But still, she'd left the Owlery feeling better. Then, two weeks later, her world came crashing down. Dan was going back to Durmstrang; the heightened emotions of the castle proving too much to try and fix himself in this atmosphere. How could she say no to such an empassioned request? She knew she'd write to him, see him again some day, but something about his goodbye felt so...final. Irina withdrew into herself, which was where she found herself, curled up, her chin resting on her drawn up knees. She felt nothing, she saw nothing, she heard nothing. Nothing. She hated to think herself weak, but in the moment she felt just that; weak and helpless. @adrian

Well, Adrian's family at the castle had gone done by one. Daniel, his cousin, had gone back to Durmstrang. Understandably, with all the heightened emotions from the tournament and also the state of the magical community. Despite not getting along Adrian had seen the toll it'd taken. Seen the signs. To be honest, Adrian wasn't that torn up about it. Sure, him and Daniel had managed to make some amends during the Yuleball but that didn't make everything okay. Daniel was still an annoying prick. Just a periodically nice one.
Now, as Adrian wandered into the common room, surprisingly alone, he spotted Irina, Daniel's girlfriend.... sorry, ex girlfriend. They'd broken up, hadn't they? Lily had mentioned it but it'd only half registered to him at the time. Maybe he should pay more attention to what Lily said. But half the stuff was total nonsense! How was he supposed to pick out the important bits among all that rambling mixed in with her aggressive snogging? That wasn't the point. The point was, There was Irina, looking absolutely miserable. And he should be running for he hills. The last thing he needed was a girl getting over heartbreak caused by hi cousin. And yet his stupid mouth started running before that common sense kicked in. "Sitting there like that isn't going to help."

It took Irina a few moments to register that someone was talking to her; when she finally raised her head off her chin she felt mildly surprised that it was Adrian Greyback of all people. She knew Adrian and Daniel didn’t get along for the most part, but Dan had convinced his parents to let Adrian stay with them over the summer so he could continue to attend Hogwarts and stay with Lily. Irina had hoped that this would eventually lead to a better relationship between the two cousins, but now that Dan was heading back to Durmstrang, who knew what was going to happen? “Nothings going to help,” she finally said softly. She felt the tears pinprick the corner of her eyes and she turned away from Adrian, trying to hold them in. “It was supposed to be temporary, d’you know what I mean? He said he’d come back to me, he promised and now….I don’t even know what to think,” she said, hearing the quiver in her voice as a betraying tear splashed down from her eye onto her knee. She wiped at her eye furiously and buried her head in her knees for a few moments. “I’ll be okay, just...I just need a few minutes to be okay with feeling sorry for myself, if it's not too much to ask," she mumbled, her words muffled and foggy. @adrian

Well, Daniel had certainly done a number on Irina, that was for sure! The way she didn't even react for the first moment, or when she finally did it was to say that nothing would help and turned away. Ugh, girls. Why were they so dramatic? Heaven forbid she started to cry-
Oh, nevermind. She already was. Adrian's discomfort went from slightly mild to extreme with a heart beat, and all he wanted to do was run and find Lily so she could handle this whole mess. The last thing he needed was for his cousin's ex-grilfriend to start up the waterworks! "Well, he's always been a prick like that." Was his quiet answer as he attempted to sound as callous as before. Sure, he knew why his cousin had left. The empathy thing. New envirornment, plus people he didn't know, plus a serious girlfriend. He'd just cracked.

Irina looked up at Adrian, blinking at his comment. Surprisingly, a small giggle escaped from her lips, and soon Irina was no longer crying but laughing. She imagined she looked like a crazy person, laughing and still crying a little at the same time. “Sorry,” she finally managed to get out, wiping her eyes. She sighed a little and shook her head . “Well I can appreciate you’re never one to mince around your words,” she said finally. Adrian was a man of little speech, but it was not all that surprising considering who his girlfriend was. Lily could probably talk enough for the both of them and then some. “I know it’s for the best that he went back; all of this-” Irina gestured to around the common room, but meaning the entirety of the school “-was too much for him. I know I was his first girlfriend, and that there are a lot of...hormones running around campus. I think it just imploded him,” she finished, looking out the window where she could see the Durmstrang ship, its’ sails rippling in the breeze. She felt a knot tighten a little in the pit of her stomach, but turned back to Adrian with a small smile. “I’m glad at least you’re finally ready to admit what’s been in front of you the entire time,” she said, her voice slightly teasing him for his stubborn aloofness when it came to her dear friend Lily Potter. @adrian

Laughing was definitely better then crying. At least now Adrian didn't feel like fleeing nearly as bad. "I can't 'mince around' with my words, English isn't my best language." Despite using it constantly, Adrian knew he still had some problems with the language. He was bad at expressing himself in German, of course it was worse in English.
All the points Irina made about Daniel were spot on, so he nodded. "You can still write him." he explained simply. Only half the school year was left after all. And as much as his cousin's presence bothered him, Dan and Irina could always get back together after the year ended.
Oh there it was. Lily. Adrian immediately rolled his eyes and ran a hand through his short hair. "I don't know what you're talking about." was his stubborn answer. Not that he was denying anything about him and Lily. Just denying that it's been right in front of him for so long.

Irina inclined her head in slight agreement as Adrian reminded her that she could always right to Daniel. "I could," she mused, but then hesitated. "But...there'll always be that fact that he left me. Even if I can explain it all away, make sense of everything. He still left. That sort of scar doesn't really fade so easily." And there it was, out loud and in the open. Even if Irina could fully understand why Dan left, and even empathize with him. It still didn't erase the fact that instead of seeking help nearby, he had gone back and left Irina. What if they did get back together, and things got tough again? Elaine Dupree was still out there, and war would come to the Wizarding World if she wasn't stopped. What if he couldn't handle it, and what if Irina could take only so many what ifs in the world. Irinas grin widened as Adrian - predictably - denied everything. "Oh please Adrian, you and Lily have been snogging like wildebeasts the last few weeks and the entire castle knows it," she said teasingly. "I'm happy for you though Adrian, really. Lily's one of my closest friends and I know how happy you make her," she told him genuinely. @adrian

Adrian didn't really understand that sort of thinking. Daniel had left for his health. Not because he didn't like Irina. But when had Adrian ever understood women? They were the source of most of his confusion in life. They also happened to be the source of most of his pain and headaches, but that was almost entirely Lily's handiwork. "Oh." He simply answered, though the faked understanding in his voice so obviously faked that it was actually pathetic. Really it sounded more like "I have no idea what that's supposed to mean but I'd rather you not cry and go into detail of why this is upsetting". Funny how Adrian's shortest of answers always seemed to vocalize such complex thoughts.
"Wildebeasts don't snog." Adrian's defense was quite poor. Obviously since he couldn't deny the fact that he and Lily had been snogging because there were too many witnesses, he instead focused in on the fact that you couldn't actually define how much snogging had been done. Again, it was a very poor defense. As she went on to say that he made Lily happy... His ears flushed red with embarrassment. Honestly, Lily made him happy too. No matter how much trouble she stirred up in his life, or how insane her antics were. He couldn't imagine life without her. Everything would just be so boring. Instead of responding though, and furthering his embarrassment, he just nodded, his lips in a tight thin line as he fought the urge to smile.

Irina raised an eyebrow at him; she could tell he was feeling socially awkward and uncomfortable with the conversation about his cousin and their relationship. "Well, think of it this way, what do you think would have happened to you and Lily if you had gone away to America?" she asked him fairly. Everyone liked to think that they were the exception to the rule, but they hardly were. Irina for a time thought her and Dan could be the exception, but she had obviously been wrong. She was, very slowly, starting to think that it may have been for the best. It would be a long time though before she was fully over what had happened, but she was starting to think that she'd end up okay in the end. At Adrians' next words, Irina burst out laughing. "Oh? And have you made a study of wildebeests and their mating habits?" she asked him teasingly, laughing even harder at the idea. Oh, how funny it was to picture Adrian in the African safari, studying wildebeests during their mating season. Lily would probably find it more than amusing too. "You shouldn't feel embarrassed; everyone saw this coming except for the two of you," she added, grinning widely. There had never been a more obvious attraction than Lily and Adrian; Irina expected that he knew this too but was so deep within his own denial to truly see it. @adrian

Adrian didn't like thinking about what would have happened if he'd moved with his mother to the United Stated and left Lily. It'd been a terrible feeling, dreading the possibility of it happening. He'd made Lily cry, a sight he had never seen before and never wanted to see again. He'd felt like absolute crap all the time. And if he'd gone through with it... He didn't know what would have happened. "She'd still be my best friend..." He muttered, trying to come up with a suitable answer but falling short since there really wasn't any true answer to give.
Adrian did not understand why his comment was so hilarious, but Irina was now bursting with laughter and asking if he'd spent time studying Wildebeests and their 'mating habits'. Those last two words made Adrian choke on his own breath out of shock. "We're not doing that either!" He attempted to sound angry and defensive at his protest but since he'd almost choked himself his voice sounded more squeaky and horrified. Oh, he knew that hadn't been Irina's aim but just hearing the words in the same sentence had caused an uncontrollable reaction in Adrian. Sure, he liked Lily, and... Okay even if they were doing that he didn't want people talking about it! But they weren't! And somehow he seemed utterly convinced that the insinuation had been there.
Still trying to compose himself from his shock he almost missed that last part. Adrian turned his head and pretended to scratch an itch on his cheek, thus shielding most of his face from view as that small and embarrassed smile broke free. "It wasn't that obvious..." Again. Lie. Adrian really needed to work on his lying ability because he was absolutely terrible at it.

Irina had no idea if Adrian had intended to make her laugh so much with her comments, if it was a strange way to get her to take her mind off of the fact that his cousin had left her, but whatever he was doing it was working. Of course, it was at his own expense, but though he may seem to be getting more and more flustered with the situation, in the end very deep down he’d be begrudgingly okay with it. “Of course you’re not,” Irina said, smirking and trying to stifle the laughter, not doing very well in the process. “Wasn’t that obvious? Adrian, come on,” Irina said with an air of slight disbelief when Adrian said they weren’t that obvious. “If you were any more obvious you’d be roaming around with very little clothing on in public,” she explained, laughing again despite her attempts not to. It was quite amusing to see the Greyback boy squirm so much. Irina sobered a little when Adrian mumbled that Lily would have still been his best friend, no matter where he was in the world. While that might have been true, Irina had seen first hand what the idea of Adrian not being here did to Lily; the bright and vibrant flower that was her friend had drooped with a sad depression. Though Adrian was far more stoic and hidden with his true feelings outwardly, inwardly she knew that he would have been the same way. “Of course you would have been,” she said softly, offering him a small smile. “But you wouldn’t have been happy, not really,” she added, her shoulders shrugging up and down quickly. @adrian

Adrian really didn't try to be funny. Quite the opposite, in fact! And yet somehow he always seemed to make a fool of himself, or say things that other people found amusing. He didn't understand why though. He didn't find anything he said to be particularly hilarious. So, as Irina spoke and tried to mask her laughter Adrian found himself frowning even more. "Why would wearing little clothing make it obvious?" He asked completely serious. It didn't make sense to him. Was that some English saying he didn't know? There were plenty of those. But regardless... It hadn't been nearly that obvious.... Had it..?
The boy looked away at Irina's words of not being happy. He knew that. He'd seen Lily' reaction to the news of his leaving. Seen the way it'd hit her. Felt the way it'd hit him. It had been a dark impenetrable cloud. Nothing could break it. Well... Nothing except for news that he didn't have to leave. Only that had made everything seem bright once more. Only that had really brought back the Lily that he liked. Brought back her smile. And heaven above he hadn't realized how much he'd missed her smile until it came back. " No, probably. not." He agreed quietly, still keeping his gaze far from Irina to hide his own somber emotions from the memory.

Irina simply shook her head, still smiling. Dan hadn't been kidding that sometimes Adrian was incredibly oblivious to a lot of things; take for example how long it took him to admit his real feelings for Lily! Her smile faded slightly as she saw his face and she knew he was thinking of the idea of leaving Lily. Clearly, it was unbearable to him to just think of it. “But you didn't leave Adrian, and in the end that's what matters,” she said softly.
Irina stood up and stretched. Her talk with Adrian though strange had been oddly effective cheering her up. She doubted that he had come into the Common Room with the intention of being the cheer up brigade, but she was thankful all the same. “I better get to my Ancient Runes homework; but first, a stop in the kitchens for a much needed study snack,” she told him, picking up her bag and making her way to the portrait hole. As she passed by his chair, she stopped and after some hesitation rested her hand on his shoulder and squeezed gently. “Thanks Adrian. Even if you didn't mean to help cheer me up, you did,” she told him, letting go. With a small smile, she ducked out of the portrait to make her way downstairs for a much needed snack.@adrian -- end Irina
