Calliope gave Imogen a wry smile as she said ‘better you than me’. She could freely admit to herself there were days when she questioned her sanity for accepting the position of Head of Hufflepuff from the Headmaster; she ran the Frog Choir as well as private lessons, all on top of her Muggle Studies classes. Sure, it was a pretty easy subject to teach since she was Muggleborn and knew how to use her personal experiences to make the class interesting, but there were definitely some sleepless nights that had worked their way into Callie’s routine. She was looking forward to London and Paris this summer; a change of pace with a different kind of chaos would be welcome by the time June rolled around. “Still, it has its’ rewards; I feel a bit like a proud parent if one of the students come to me with a problem and I’m able to help, d’you know what I mean?” she admitted with a chuckle. Perhaps parent wasn’t quite the right word for it; mentor or guardian perhaps, since this was a boarding school after all. Calliopes’ eyebrows raised as Imogen described her appearance chosen by her students, then burst out laughing. “I’m sorry but...oh Merlin that would have been something to see,” she choked out breathlessly, the tears streaming from her eyes as she attempted to collect herself together. She took a deep breath and ceased laughing, though the occassional chuckle escaped her lips. She studied Imogens’ features when the other professor mentioned she didn’t think yellow was her color. “I’d have to agree with you, it’d make your skin look a bit waxy I think,” she told her with a slight nod. “Have you ever done multiple colors at once?” she asked, curious to know in what ways Imogen had taken her natural ability.

Imogen nodded when Callie said that being the Head of House made her feel like a proud parent. Parenting had always been something that had simultaneously intrigued and repulsed Imogen, not that she needed to tell Callie that. She was curious as to the other woman’s opinion about having children of her own, but considering how recent their friendship was, Imogen wasn’t sure if that was prying or not. Eventually, the Charms professor just decided to take the plunge. “Good practice for when you have children of your own?” She asked. That wasn’t too invasive, she didn’t think. Now that she was thinking about it, Imogen was trying to figure out if she had ever heard Callie talking about a boyfriend (or girlfriend), or anything romantic. Taking a personal interest in her coworkers’ lives wasn’t anything new for Im, but she was trying to do it in a tactful way, and since she didn’t often hang out in the staff room to hear others chatting or gossiping, she was left asking vague questions that only hinted at what she wanted to know.
Im forced a smile when Callie laughed at her description of her appearance. It was funny, but it was still strange to think about how ridiculous she had looked. She knew that laughing at herself was a good way to keep from feeling awkward, but Imogen couldn’t manage to do that. Callie finished her laughing and agreed with Imogen about the yellow color, to which the woman nodded. When Callie asked about doing multiple colors, Imogen nodded again. “I went to a party or two when I was younger, and I’d make my hair rainbow to stand out a little more.” Not that she had needed to stand out, since she had never intended to take anyone home when it came to those parties. “Most of the time I leave it natural to avoid distracting students.” They were distracted enough as it was.

Calliope smiled at the comment. “Perhaps one day; just have to meet the right person first,” she told her honestly. She had thought for awhile that Calex was going to be the right person for that, but now he was gone and Callie supposed that she had best get back into the world of dating sometime soon. The idea was a bit daunting; Calliope was just turning thirty and back as a lovelorn teenager she figured she’d be married by now, though she was seemingly nowhere close to it. She loved her life though and wouldn’t trade any aspect of it for a different life. “Sometimes I feel that I’m a bit cursed if I’m honest; the last two men I dated ended up moving away to different countries. The first time was rough but the second time I was a little taken aback,” she admitted after a moments pause. Imogen wasn’t that much younger than her, but they were both definitely on the younger end of the staff, so Callie didn’t mind talking to her about this sort of thing.
She nodded as Imogen explained that she tried to keep her hair natural during classes to not distract them; it made sense, but an idea popped into her head. “You could always test their concentration by changing your hair color when they’re doing a spell that requires strict concentration, like a levitation spell. That way they could learn to focus on what they need to and tune out outside distractions,” she suggested. She knew at least some of the younger students could get distracted very easily, so a concentration drill would likely help them out.

Imogen’s curiosity was satisfied when Callie said that her position would be good practice for someday. It was such a vague term, but Imogen knew a thing or two about someday and the perils that it held. She had always thought that she was going to tell Ophelia she loved her someday, but now her best friend was pregnant with someone else’s baby and probably would never realize how Im had felt about her. Luckily she had been able to let go of the feelings she had. As if she had read Imogen’s mind, Callie began talking about her previous relationships. The Hufflepuff clicked her tongue sympathetically when she said that her previous two boyfriends had moved away to different countries. That did seem like a streak of bad luck. “I haven’t ever been in a relationship.” Im admitted, since they seemed to be talking about love now. “I’m still working on loving myself.” That was part of the reason why she had been able to let go of Ophelia so easily; Imogen had realized that there were much better things for her to be focusing her energy on than loving someone who would never love her back. Imogen wasn’t sure if she would ever reach the level of self-confidence some people seemed to have, but she was beginning to think that she was comfortable enough with herself that if romance did happen to come up, she would be comfortable letting it happen. Her sexuality also made dating a tad more complicated, since she couldn’t ever really date casually, but that was a different conversation entirely.
“That’s a good idea.” Im said thoughtfully when Callie suggested using her Metamorphmagus skills as a way to test her students. She had been so set on not setting herself apart from the other teachers – which was partly due to the subliminal fear that she would be bullied as a teacher the way she had been as a student – that she had forgotten that her gift was just that – a gift. It just meant that Imogen was probably going to have to think of some new lesson plans that incorporated her talents.

Calliope kept her face passive as Imogen mentioned she’d never been in a relationship before; she was only twenty-four, and personally Callie didn’t see any issue with her not having one yet. She had plenty of time to find someone to give herself to; it wasn’t something that should be rushed. “Honestly I don’t have time for a committed relationship right now. Add on the fact that I’m going to be going back and forth from London to Paris all summer, I can’t expect anyone to either wait or do all that traveling with me. One day though, hopefully I’ll find someone who will,” she said with a small shrug. In her mind, she wouldn’t be totally surprised if she ended up with a fellow performer; at least they would understand the organized chaos she went through every summer. “Loving yourself is more important than anything else; if you don’t love yourself, then you’ll always feel like somethings missing in any relationship you may have,” she added. When she had been younger, she’d noticed that was a recurring theme in many of her friends, including herself, that the relationships tended to die quickly because they weren’t fully happy with themselves.
Calliope grinned as she noticed Imogen mulling over the idea. “If you do end up trying it out, you’ll have to let me know how it goes,” she told her. She looked out the window as the bell began to gong loudly, signalling the time. “I have to get going; one of my sixth years asked for an extra career advice meeting with me,” she said apologetically. “Keep it up though, you sound great and your confidence is growing,” she encouraged, and with that swept out of the classroom towards her basement level office.
