When Ophelia said that her mother had also used to sing the song Imogen had mentioned, the Metamorphmagus smiled, already beginning to hum a few bars. Now that she realized her voice was decent, at least, she was much more open about using it in the small ways – singing along to songs she heard or humming something that popped into her head – even if she wasn’t quite at the level of confidence where she wanted to burst into song in the middle of a pub.
Ophelia said that she had run into Mina the month previous, and Imogen nodded, trying not to look too guilty at the mention of Dakoda’s sister, who had been the one to tell her about Ophelia’s pregnancy before her friend had gotten the chance. “I do know how she gets about him.” Imogen agreed. She had never thought that Mina’s obsession with her brother was particularly healthy, but compared to some of the other activities Mina got into, it was the least of all the evils. “Mina and I keep talking about her coming to visit me at school, but we’ve never gotten around to actually planning a date.” Imogen mused. “Everything’s just been so busy…” Imogen trailed off, and then shook herself a little awake. She wasn’t here to talk about herself, and it wasn’t like she was actually that busy – it was just that time always moved in strange ways when it came to school, even when you were a teacher.

Ophelia couldn’t help but smile at Imogen humming the first few bars, and found herself humming along with her. This was a pleasant surprise; Imogen had always been much more introverted in the past, so even just humming in public was a great step forward. She was very glad her friend had met this singing professor and that she had helped Imogen discover her voice. “Well the humming game is on point, so I imagine your singing voice must be lovely as well. I can’t wait to hear it,” Ophelia told her eagerly.
She giggled as Imogen mentioned how she knew how Mina got about Dakota. She had never really taken too much notice of it before, just that Mina seemed to always be around whenever she had been hanging out at Dakota’s even before she was pregnant. She had even joined them on occasion before she had left for America going out to a bar once she had turned eighteen; Ophelia had been a bit concerned how much the girl had had to drink, but Dakota knew how to take care of her. She knew Mina wasn’t exactly happy with her brother impregnating someone, and knew part of it had to do with her possessive nature when it came to Dakota. Ophelia hoped though that one day she’d be okay with it, maybe once her new niece or nephew came into the world. “From what Koda’s said about Mina, you’ll have to be the one to set the actual date for her to come, and make sure she sticks to it,” she said with a tiny laugh. She cocked her head to the side, curious as Imogen trailed off after saying she had been busy. “Go on, I want to hear what else you’ve been up to,” she told her kindly, gesturing for her to continue.

Imogen smiled a little when Ophelia said that her humming game was on point. She really did enjoy music, now that she was actually exploring it instead of just wondering whether or not she would be able to do it due to the unique nature of her vocal cords. “One of the professors at the school goes to the open microphone night at the Hog’s Head sometimes.” Imogen offered. She definitely wasn’t in a positon where she would consider singing, especially not at the Hog’s Head, of all places, but it was a bit of small talk, and it showed that occasionally she did speak to the other professors.
Ophelia said that Imogen was going to have to be the one to set the date, and Im nodded. She had known that from the start, but she also needed to know when Mina was available, and getting the other woman to send the professor her schedule was like pulling teeth sometimes. As for enforcing Mina’s visit, Imogen wasn’t sure if she would be able to do that. The only thing she could do to make Mina come see her was physically drag her there, and that was no fun. “Well, I’ve been tutoring some students. Anna Weasley wanted to know a few spells, but that was a while back now…” Imogen said, chewing her lip. “Did I tell you I’m the faculty adviser for the Gay-Straight Alliance? Cecelia and Zita, the captain and co-captain, seem to have some big plans for February’s meeting, with Valentine’s Day and all. And of course there’s the Aurors, always the Aurors…” Imogen said. She wasn’t a fan of feeling like she was always being watched, but that was the price of safety, she supposed.

Ophelia’s mouth formed a perfect ‘o’ as Imogen mentioned an open mic night, her excitement bubbling. “Im, you simply MUST go to this open mic night!” she exclaimed, then continued chattering. “You don’t even have to perform the first time you go, my mum used to talk about these poetry slams she’d go to as a teenager, and some people just go to listen and learn, or even just build up the courage to stand up there. I’ll go with you!” she clapped her hands together excitedly. She’d only ever been to an open mic night once on a date with a Muggle boy four years ago; he was an aspiring musician and loved playing his guitar for Ophelia. He had been nice, but the spark just simply hadn’t been there. She didn’t know what he was up to now but she hoped he was well. Ophelia nodded, grinning again as Imogen mentioned she had tutored Anna Weasley. She happened to know Anna was a Gryffindor, and it warmed her heart to know that Imogens’ old prejudice against the lion house was softening, if only a little bit. She didn’t say that out loud of course; it had been a point of contention in their previous owl correspondence. “Oooh, is that a new club? I don’t remember that being there when we were in school?” she asked curiously. It would have been something she would have joined after all; she didn’t see gender when finding a person attractive. It was their soul, and their personality that truly mattered to her. “Well that sounds like fun! I bet there will be plenty of sweets and loads of pink everywhere,” she added, giggling a little.

Imogen was a bit taken aback by Ophelia’s insistence that she had to go to the next open microphone night at the Hog’s Had. “I don’t like being in the Hog’s Head under the best of circumstances…” Im said uncertainly. It gave her the creeps, mostly because the kinds of characters that hung out there were unsavory at best. Honestly, she wasn’t sure what had possessed the place to think that people would want to come and sing there, but from what she had heard, the event was actually quite popular. When Ophelia said that she would come, though, Imogen found it all too easy to acquiesce. “Perhaps we should wait until after the baby is born.” Im suggested. Like she had been thinking, the Hog’s Head wasn’t known for its safety, and she couldn’t, in good conscience, lead a pregnant woman into that viper’s den. Besides, that would be a good excuse to give Ophelia a night off from motherly duties. It probably wouldn’t be anything like the parties Ophelia was used to attending, but it would be something. And if Imogen could talk to the other professor who had gone, maybe they could make a night of it.
“I don’t know if it’s new or not, to be honest.” Imogen admitted. If it had been around when they were in Hogwarts, Im hadn’t heard of it, probably because she wasn’t looking for something like that at the time – she had been content to figure things out on her own, no matter how much that had negatively affected her. Im nodded when Ophelia said that there would be plenty of sweets. “I do believe that the girls have some sort of in with the house elves…” She had never questioned why there always seemed to be food at the GSA meetings, but she assumed it had something to do with the captain and co-captain. “I hope they keep the directions tasteful. Not all love has to be pink and red.” There were some kinds of love that were softer and not as bold, and Im didn’t think that pink and red were appropriate to represent those loves.

Ophelia just giggled at Imogen’s obvious discomfort at the idea of being in Hogs Head. “Well if they’re hosting an open mic night, then perhaps they are trying to turn around their image! Plus, you’ll be there so I won’t be by myself for the most part,” she reasoned. She knew it’d probably be quite odd to see a pregnant woman in a pub or bar, but she supposed that students under the legal age of drinking went in there sometimes, so it wasn’t the strangest thing to be seen. “If you insist though we can wait until the baby is born; April is only a few months away after all and after then I’m sure it won’t be long before I need a night off,” she said, then sombered up a little. “Is that awful of me to say? I mean, my childs’ not even born yet and I’m already planning a night off. I know parents sometimes need time to themselves, but I do feel a little bad,” she asked quietly. She patted her stomach gently, as if trying to tell the baby she loved him or her even if she went out for a night.
Ophelia laughed. “Well we did sneak into the kitchens on occasion while we were at school; I’m not surprised the tradition still carries on,” she reasoned, smiling at the memory. She had always reasoned that the house elves did so much for them, so she liked visiting with them and since it came with treats it made it even more enjoyable. “That is true, there’s yellow for friendship love, purple for a regal sort of love, orange for passion and white for pure innocent love. At least in the roses sense,” she rattled off, ticking the list off on her fingers. Plus, the more colors they had the more fun they could have going over different kinds of love, which would be good for Valentines Day. “I’m sure you could incorporate that into the meeting too,” she added.

Imogen just nodded when Ophelia said that the Hogs Head was trying to turn around their image. As far as she knew, the pub had always been unapologetic about its seediness, hence why she had been surprised to hear about the open microphone night in the first place. Ophelia said something about her not being alone in the Hogs Head, since Im was going to be there, too, and the professor had to bite back a comment about not being the best protector in the world. As much as she wished to claim that… it wasn’t true. Imogen protected the people she cared about, and her position at Hogwarts was making her realize that she was a competent witch. If someone tried to hurt Ophelia, then there was no way that Imogen wouldn’t be able to defend against them. When Ophelia said that April wasn’t far away, Imogen nodded. April was going to be on them before they knew it, and then May would come, and then Imogen would have finished her first year as a professor… and been rather successful at it. Or at least not enough of a failure to be fired. “It’s not awful to want a night off.” Imogen soothed. “When things change in big ways, it’s natural to want to keep something the same.” That was part of the reason Im had tried to cling so tightly to Ophelia at the beginning of the school year. She hadn’t been much good at keeping things the same, but the Hufflepuff was hopeful that she had at least changed in a good way.
“I’m not sure if it even counts as sneaking in anymore.” Imogen said with a laugh. Sneaking implied that people didn’t want to get caught, and as far as Im could see, the students considered the kitchens just another part of their domain, someplace they could go without worry of being reprimanded. “I don’t have much of a role in planning the meetings.” Imogen explained when Ophelia mentioned the subject of reflecting other colors for love in their Valentine’s decorations. “I just supervise to make sure that nothing horrible happens.” Im would have hoped that people who were coming to the meetings were doing so knowing that what they shared was more important than their differences, but there were quite a few clashing personalities, and even clashing worldviews, within the club, so she was fully prepared to break up fights if they occurred.

Ophelia relaxed a little when Imogen confirmed it was not indeed a bad thing to want a night off; she was glad to hear that. “It will be a big change, I feel like it’s only been weeks since I found out but really it’s been almost 3 months." Three months since she had told Dakota about her pregnancy. Now there were only a few months to go before Ophelia would be a mother, and as strange as it felt to her, she was getting used to it. “Well you’re the faculty advisor, so you’re probably viewed more as a mentor than perhaps you think you are,” Ophelia reasoned, shrugging a little. “I think if you offered advice they’d take it.”
Ophelia gulped down the last of her drink and checked her watch. “Ah, I have to be going. My father ripped his Wizengamot robes and apparently they have a big meeting tomorrow, something to do with what happened with the Shacklebolt twins, and I volunteered myself to fix them because he’s hopeless when it comes to that type of thing,” she explained, feeling sad at the thought. She hadn’t known any of the Shacklebolts personally, but the death of one of the twins so soon after the father must be a nightmare for the family. She stood up, then waddled over and gave Imogen a hug. “I’ll see you soon, for open mic night!” she promised, then was off into the afternoon chilly air.
