Hugo smiled when she said that all she wanted was to be with him. "Well you're in luck then because I don't have any plans for the rest of the evening ... actually for the rest of the break. What do you say I spend it with you?" He chuckled a little. "At least, as much of it as they'll let me." She still needed rest. Even though she finally accepted the idea that she would live past this year, Hugo needed to be careful not to wear her out. "But look what I brought," he said, moving toward the door to the hospital wing, opening it and grabbing a basket hidden on the other side. "I thought we could have a picnic in the hospital wing, if you're interested. If not, we can just snack on this when we get hungry." Really, he was good with whatever. Just spending time with a happy Xan was good enough for him.

Xan smiled when Hugo said that he didn’t have any other plans. She didn’t expect him to, especially since she didn’t think the Yule Ball would accept any latecomers for security reasons, but it was still nice to hear that she was one of the main focuses in his life. He added that he would only stay as much as the nurses let him, and Xan rolled her eyes. They tried to be as respectful of the hospital wing’s rules as possible, but more often than not it seemed Xan and Hugo were violating one or another of them. When she saw that Hugo had brought a picnic basket, Xan raised up onto the balls of her feet and clapped her hands in delight. “I am interested!” She said quickly. Everyone at the Ball was going to be getting food, so it didn’t make any sense why she couldn’t, either. And then after she ate, maybe she’d have enough energy for another dance or two. Xan immediately sat cross-legged on the floor, gesturing for Hugo to sit down because her so they could picnic.

Hugo smiled at Xan's obvious enthusiasm. He loved making her happy and making her smile. He was planning on doing it for years and years, so starting here in school was a good thing. He sat down beside her with the basket and pulled out some food. "Looks like we have chicken, potatoes, vegetables and orange juice," he told her with a smile. "Here you go, my lady," he told her with a smile as he dished some up for her. Then he got some for himself and started eating happily. A thought of another thing he could do to surprise her occurred to him, but he'd save it until they were done eating. Or maybe until she woke up the next day.

Xan tried not to squeal too much when Hugo announced their meal. The hospital wing’s food was all well and good – it was made by the same house elves, after all – but sometimes the nurses avoided giving her foods with too much spice so that she wouldn’t upset her stomach, and eventually everything started to taste the same. Having a real meal was exciting, and Xan tucked into it quickly after Hugo handed her the plate of food. “Potatoes are the best thing to happen to the world.” Xan announced. “Other than you, of course, Hugo.” She added with a smile that was more than a bit cheesy. There were plenty of things that were better than potatoes, of course, but in that moment, potatoes with salt and pepper were Xan’s favorite thing.

Hugo loved how excited Xan got when he pulled out the food. He loved making her happy and making her smile. He didn't care why, but it was nice knowing that basically everything he was doing today was making her happy. He laughed at her announcement about potatoes and then himself. "Well I'm glad you approve," he teased with a smile. "Of the potatoes and myself." He winked, showing her that he was teasing. He ate and then once he was done, he laid down on the floor, looking up at the ceiling and patting his stomach. "I'm so full," he moaned at her. "Did you make it," he teased, looking over at her.

Xan snorted in a way that definitely was not ladylike when Hugo said that he was glad she approved. Of him or the potatoes, she didn’t know which, but either way it was funny. He then clarified that he was glad of both of those things, and Xan returned his smile. “Any time for you.” She teased right back. She doubted there would be a time when she didn’t approve of Hugo. Sometimes she got frustrated with him, but that was different. Potatoes were a different story altogether, but Xan also had yet to meet a potato she didn’t agree with, so maybe that was a good thing, too. “I think I made it.” Xan said with a laugh when Hugo asked if she made it through the meal. “Portion control is key.” She teased. She had been too sick to eat a real meal lately, so Xan had been careful not to overdo it so as not to make herself sick to her stomach. “Is now a bad time to ask for another dance?” She asked, raising her eyebrows at her boyfriend, sprawled on the floor.

Hugo laughed when Xan said she made it through the meal, teasing him about portion control. "Hmm ... maybe I'll have to ask you to teach me about that sometime," he teased right back. Obviously no one was going to control any of his portions because Hugo ate whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted! That was the benefit of knowing where the entrance to the kitchen was. Then she asked about another dance and Hugo sat up immediately, all thoughts of his full stomach forgotten. "Of course not! Let's dance," he said, standing and then extending a hand out to her so he could help her to her feet.

Xan laughed when Hugo said that someday she was going to have to teach him about portion control. “I could teach you…Or I could just watch you overstuff yourself every time.” Xan said, wrinkling her nose to show Hugo that she was just kidding. It was kind of funny to watch him groan with his stomach full of food, but of course, it could be uncomfortable to be overly full. Xan was glad that despite whatever discomfort he was feeling from overeating, Hugo agreed to dance with her – there were only so many nights one could dance in dress robes, but they could overeat any day of the year. Xan took the hand that Hugo offered her to stand up, and then moved them both into dancing position, unsure of whether or not the nurses would start the music again.

Hugo gave Xan a fake glare. "Just wait. One of those times when I overstuff myself I'll get into trouble. And then you'll be worried about me," he told her with a small smirk. He didn't really think it would get that bad, but it was something to tease her about. Dancing with her was fun. He loved spending time with Xan, especially dancing. He smiled as they started dancing, his smile widening when the nurses started the music once more. Wow, they were paying more attention to the couple than he expected. At the moment it was nice, but Hugo also hoped that they would give him and Xan at least a bit of privacy. The song was slow, and Hugo simply enjoyed the music and the feeling of holding the girl he loved. "Xan," he breathed her name once in the middle of the dance. He didn't know what else to say to her, so other than that he remained silent.

Xan smiled softly at her boyfriend. “I’m always worried about you, Hugo.” She had been in love with him in different ways for practically her whole life, and love nearly necessitated worry. She worried about him seeing her death, and others’ too. Hugo coped well, of course, but she wished that it wasn’t something that he had to cope with…which was why it was so nice that they had discovered that he could touch her without seeing anything. Xan wanted him to know the comfort of being hugged without the pain of watching someone he cared for dying. When the two of them were together on their makeshift dance floor, the music started again, and Xan had to hide a giggle. The nurses were spying on them, and for some reason, she found that extremely funny. She and Hugo were dancing again, slow and steady, and when he said her name, Xan put her head on his shoulder, pulling him just a little bit closer. “I love you, Hugo.” She said quietly. They were going to get their happy ending someday – but until that day, Xan was happy just to be close to the boy that she loved.
