The cart they were in jostled again, and Emmy swore she saw the blood beginning to drain from Rory’s face again. He claimed that he only got into trouble with her, and Emmy raised her eyebrows. “You must have a lot of mischief built up from all the years I’ve been gone.” She teased. She couldn’t imagine that, with all of those wonderful things at his disposal, Rory hadn’t even gone on one dangerous, ill-advised adventure. Then again, Emmy had always been the instigator for that kind of thing, so without Emmy around, it was possible that no one else roped him into their harebrained schemes. “I still wish I could have gotten to go to Hogwarts with you.” She said honestly. While she was at Ilvermorny it hadn’t ever occurred that Rory would have been at another magical school, so she hadn’t ever thought about going anyplace else, but now that she was back, Emmy had to admit she felt like she had missed out.

Rory forced a smile as he breathed deeply, trying to make himself calm down. "Probably," he said, his voice shaky. "I didn't really have anyone nearby encouraging me to the same types of things as you though." He tried to tease her, but wasn't sure how it came across since he was so nervous. He shrugged when she said she wished she could have gone to Hogwarts with him. "I just wish I would've known about magic when we were together. Then we wouldn't have ..." lost so much time. He left the sentence unfinished. "We probably wouldn't have been in the same house ... but it would have been great to spend time with you that whole time." He'd missed her those years, but it was over now. He was glad that he saw Emmy the other day, that he realized she was so close again.

Emmy wasn’t sure what to feel when Rory said that he hadn’t had anyone like her when he was at school. Part of her was pleased, because it meant she was irreplaceable, but there was a part of her that was sad, too, because Rory deserved to go on adventures even when she wasn’t around. Emmy nodded when Rory said that he wished that they had both known about magic, all those years ago. She heard the words he said just as easily as the ones he didn’t. “We both know now.” She said firmly. Regretting everything that they hadn’t been able to do together wasn’t productive, and it took away time from what they had now – the chance to be together, knowing they were both magical. “Don’t look to the past, Rory.” Emmy said gently. She had learned the hard way that wallowing in the past was a great way to get hurt. “We have a future, together.” Just as Emmy said those words, the cart shuddered to a stop. Emmy looked around – they definitely weren’t at the vault yet. What was happening?

He nodded, understanding what she really meant by that. At least they found out at one point that they both had magic. How tragic would it have been if they went through their whole lives not knowing that? He smiled and nodded when she told him not to look to the past. "I know," he started, but paused when she added that they had a future together. Wait. Did she mean that they had a future to BE together in, or that now they knew they could spend parts of their future together or ...? He had no idea. The cart stopped suddenly and Rory looked around cautiously. This was not good. They didn't seem to be at a vault. He felt his muscles tense as he turned to the goblin. "What's going on?" He demanded, surprised by how strong his voice sounded.

Emmy smiled a little at Rory when he said that he knew not to dwell too much on the past. She was eager to hear what he had to say about the future that they were hopefully going to share (in the most basic sense of the word – they were just going to be in each other’s lives), but it seemed that the cart stopping had distracted him, and for good reason. If he was afraid of the thing, then this was definitely not going to help his situation. The goblin who was in the cart with them shook his head, obviously confused as he began to fiddle with the cart’s controls. “It’ll all be fine, Rory.” Emmy assured her friend, even though she didn’t know anything about what was happening, either. Since she wasn’t afraid of heights or the carts, this wasn’t a big deal for her, so now her priority was going to be to keep Rory from panicking or accidentally scaring the poor goblin.

Why did this have to happen? He finally was starting to calm down when the cart just had to have problems. What was wrong with how it was working before? Rory bit his lip as his nerves started to rise again. He didn't want to be trapped down here in the vaults with a faulty cart! Of course this would be his luck. Then Emmy said everything would be fine. Rory turned his gaze to her, trying to force himself to believe her, though he didn't know if that would help him calm down. "How do you know that?" he asked eventually, forcing himself to speak calmly despite the wide pit in his stomach.

How did Emmy know that everything was going to be okay? The short answer was that she didn’t. But she couldn’t really tell Rory that when he was on the verge of panic. Emmy didn’t like to lie, especially not to Rory, but the first thing that popped into her head to answer the question he asked was a lie so far-fetched that it might actually end up sounding like the truth. “When I went to school, I found out I was a clairvoyant.” Emmy said dumbly, hoping that Rory would be so desperate for comfort and shocked by the (fake) revelation that he wouldn’t ask much about it. “So when I say that something is going to go right, it’s because I’ve already seen how it goes.” Lie, lie, lie. Emmy began to feel a sticky churning in her stomach from the untruthfulness of it all, and she finally began to understand a little bit of how Rory was feeling.

Emmy could have said hundreds of things, and Rory was waiting for some sort of sarcastic retort or joke, but then she said she was clairvoyant and he turned to face her, a confused look on his face. "You're what? Why haven't you said anything about it before now?" he asked, not really sure if he believed her. Emmy wouldn't keep that big of a secret from him, right? Or would she? She had kept the secret that she was magical ... but that was to keep the statute of secrecy, he assumed. Rory's head started to swim slightly as he tried to figure this out. "You see everything then? Or what do you see?" he asked, relieved that she was at least distracting him from his thoughts about the stupid cart.

Emmy knew she really should have thought that through before she started speaking, but thinking things through wasn’t something that she normally did. Now she was going to pay the price. “The shock of us both being magical was enough for one day, I thought.” Emmy said, thanking her storytelling skills for making her a better liar than most people would be. She was still vaguely uncomfortable with the whole lying to Rory thing, but at least he was paying attention to something more than his fear – and not in the half-hearted way he had been paying attention to her questions about the grounds and the like. “I don’t see everything. It’s not something I can control. It’s just random.” Emmy said, riffing off of what she knew about Divination already and hoping that Rory didn’t know any real clairvoyants to compare her to. “I saw us walking out of this bank last night. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Normally I just see day-to-day stuff anyways, but I guess that was important now, huh?” Oh, she really was lying her arse off. She hoped that Rory bought it, or was at least immersed enough in trying to figure out whether or not she was lying to forget his fears.

Despite himself, Rory laughed a little when she said she didn't want to shock him. That was ... ridiculous and quite honestly not the Emmy he remembered. She wouldn't have thought of something like that, would she? "It would've been nice to know the truth though," he answered casually. Of course, he wasn't upset at her, but he hated being surprised like this. His eyebrows furrowed. "Is it entirely random or do you have any patterns?" He asked after a moment. He thought he heard that most clairvoyants had visions about specific things, but he wasn't entirely sure about that either. She said she saw them walking out of the bank and Rory's head turned to the side. "So ... you're saying that whatever is going to happen in here, we'll be just fine?" He didn't mean to sound nervous and hoped she couldn't sense it, but at the thought of where they were, Rory started trembling slightly. No, he thought to himself. He didn't want to get into trouble again. It was easier to simply focus on Emmy.

Ugh. It was like Rory knew that she was lying, and he was trying to guilt her into revealing her deception. It would have been nice to know the truth? He had to know that she was lying. Either that, or she was being paranoid… Honestly, both of those options were equally likely. When Rory asked if her supposed visions were entirely random, Emmy shrugged. “I haven’t really paid much attention to them.” She said, which was pretty much the opposite of what she thought every clairvoyant felt, but oh well. “They’re just…minor inconveniences. Which is part of the reason I didn’t realize I was having visions when I was younger – I just thought they were daydreams or something like that.” She was digging herself a deeper hole, Emmy knew, but she was worried that if she gave up the trick now, then Rory would start freaking out again, which was not on her list of good things to happen. “Yes. We’re going to be fine.” She said confidently. Emmy would have said that no matter what, but now that she had a supposed vision to back her up, maybe Rory would accept it as more than her trying to placate him.

She hadn't paid attention to them? Rory was no clairvoyant, but that seemed entirely out of the ordinary, and even more so when he was talking to Emmy. Didn't she always want to understand things around her and figure out how they worked? She was just so naturally curious and the idea that she hadn't paid attention to something that should be so important in her life seemed wrong. Something wasn't adding up here. Still, Rory didn't want to call her out on it ... yet, at least. He nodded his head thoughtfully, trying to figure out what he should say yet. "Then how did you figure out they were visions, if you haven't really paid attention to them?" he finally asked. She seemed so confident when she said that they were going to be fine and Rory nodded again, not trusting himself to say anything. He believed Emmy, didn't have any reason not too, but that didn't mean he could ignore his fear entirely. He looked at the edge of the cart for a second and froze. He couldn't see anything outside of the cart. He turned his attention back to Emmy. "Distract me, Emmy," he said softly.

Emmy was really talking herself into a tangle, which was…not a good thing. There was a reason she hadn’t chosen to be a Horned Serpent, and that was because she didn’t like talking herself out of situations. She’d rather rewrite an entire book than try to rework an old one to cover up a plot hole – so the fact that she couldn’t just erase everything that she had just told Rory was a little frustrating. Emmy was saved from having to answer Rory by the cart suddenly lurching to life again. Emmy threw out her arm to keep Rory from tumbling forward into the cart, and she thanked whatever deity was listening that she didn’t have to explain to her best friend that she had lied about being clairvoyant so that he would stop freaking out. “Told you so.” Emmy said, flipping her hair over her shoulder and grinning at Rory in typical Emmy fashion, trying to ignore the way her stomach had shifted when Rory had asked her to distract him. She had felt something, and that was interesting, given everything that was happening. The goblin in the cart apologized for the inconvenience, and Emmy just nodded. This was not how she had expected her first Gringott’s visit to go.

All of a sudden, the cart was lurching around again, which was only a small relief to Rory. He was not excited that the cart was moving again because it was still going down. Instead of taking him out of the labyrinth of vaults, they were still going further in. He groaned, leaning forward and putting his head between his knees. He just shook his head at Emmy's comment. He lifted his head to look up at her so he could say, "I will believe you when we are leaving this forsaken place." Then down his head went again. He wasn't really sure if he wanted to get up, but he would for Emmy. He took a few deep, deep breaths and then sat up, forcing a smile at Emmy. "Any idea how much longer it'll take to get to your vault."

Emmy shook her head a little when Rory called Gringotts a forsaken place. She had assumed this was where he had done his banking, but maybe Rory didn’t have enough to justify having a vault that required a cart ride. Emmy instantly felt bad for thinking that. She tried not to flaunt her own success, especially since she knew what it was like to grow up not entirely well-to-do. When Rory asked how much longer it would take to get to the vault, the redhead just shrugged her shoulders. “This is the first time I’ve been, remember?” She reminded him. That was why she had summoned him to help her in the first place. Emmy didn’t think that the ride could take much longer, though, since the air was chilly and the vaults they were rolling by looked heavily secured. Any deeper or more secure and they’d practically be in the center of the earth.
