Susan shrugged a little at Edmunds comment and gave him a small smile. “You’re probably right, you’ve always been the most independent of the four of us,” she commented with a giggle. “You shouldn’t have to go through all of this by yourself though Ed. Lucy and I both care about you and your happiness and want to know how to help,” she reminded him, pretending to sound stern for a moment. “Relationships can be a bit confusing sometimes though, or in my case each date ends with one of us being sick or injured,” she added, laughing sincerely this time. It was true, for the first part of her and Casey’s relationship one of them was either sick or injured; first with her broken wrist, then her flu and then his dragonpox.
Shaking her head a little, Susan squeezed her brothers’ shoulder quickly. “Politics is politics, you’re right,” she agreed. Glancing up at the sky, she noticed dark clouds beginning to gather. “We should get back inside, it looks like the skies are about to open up,” she suggested with a small frown.

Edmund knew what Susan was talking about. It was hard to see someone you cared about go through a hard time, but ... he wasn't used to people caring. The only person that ever asked whether or not he was alright (out of his family, that was), was his little sister Lucy. Even then, she was always closer to Will than she was with him and Ed was alright with that. He didn't like worrying others about his problems. "I know, Sus," he told her after a few seconds, "... but it's not a big deal. I'm used to taking care of myself. But if you ever want to talk about anything, let me know." He smiled when she mentioned Casey. "How are things going with him, by the way?" he asked, hoping to change the conversation.
He shook his head when she suggested they go back inside. "You can. I'd rather stay out here for a bit." Ed wasn't ready to go inside. It looked like dinner was going to start and he wasn't about to run into Addi there. He'd wait until later.

Susan glanced up at the sky, then back at her brother with a small smile. "Not getting rid of me that easily Ed," she told him teasingly, nudging him lightly. Her smile widened as he asked after Casey. "He's well thank you, things are going really well. Mother seemed to like him which was good," she said happily. Indeed, Casey had made a good impression on their mother Hannah at the New Years Eve Ball; it had helped that she had known Casey was a wizard beforehand so she could explain that he was training to be a doctor, something around the Muggle equivalant of a Mediwizard. Privately, her mother said Casey was very handsome, and Susan couldn't agree more. "I taught him how to shoot a bow and arrow. I'm still far better, but that's to be expected," she said, giggling. Susan had always had the talent for shooting an arrow with a bow, the whole family knew that. But she had been proud of him hitting the target at least once when they had practiced. "I wish you had come to the ball Ed, it was loads of fun. Lots of people to talk to," she told him pointedly.

Ed smiled a little when Susan said she wasn't going to leave him so easily. It was sort of a relief to know that she cared enough to stay, despite how she obviously wanted to leave. "Of course Mother liked him. You do, and you two think almost exactly the same," Edmund teased in a quiet voice. He wasn't good at teasing, but hopefully she'd recognize it for what it was. He wanted Susan and Casey to be happy. He laughed when she said she taught him to shoot. "Did he like that experience? Or is he competitive?" Ed couldn't help but ask, since he knew how competitive most men his age were. He shrugged, "Come on, Sus. I've never been fun at those types of things," which was obvious. Really, Ed was good at ruining balls like that, so really Susan should be happy that he didn't go.

Susan giggled at Ed’s reasoning. It was true that Susan and her mother were very much alike, which was probably why she had been a Daddys girl; their father had loved their mother so fiercely, and after he died, Hannah hadn’t even dreamed of the possibility of remarrying, a decision she still held to this day. “You do have a point, though if he had been swearing or shown up disheveled I am quite sure she would have had something to say about him,” she reasoned, grinning. She had of course told Casey what to wear beforehand, and he had listened perfectly. “He liked it, he actually hit the target once too which was great!” she said happily. She had always had somewhat of an affinity for archery, and she was glad that her boyfriend had at least been able to hit the target by the end of his lesson.
As Ed began to make the insinuation that his presence would not have been welcomed at the ball, Susan stopped short and put her arm around her brother. “Edmund Michael Windsor, you should know that you are always fun in your own way at any of these sort of events,” she said firmly. In reality, she also knew the underlying reason for his non-attendance was due to the breakup between him and Addilyn. She knew that if she had been desiring to go, he would have for her sake. She sighed a little sadly at the thought. “Do you think you’ll ever speak to her again?” she asked him, knowing he’d know who she meant.

It was nice to see Susan so happy. Gave Ed something to distract himself, something to focus on other than the fact that things were so miserable for him. He smiled when Susan agreed with him. "Yes, but I'm not sure what you would have thought about him if he swore or was disheveled the first time you met him too," he told her bluntly. Being discreet and subtle was never really a talent of his. "I'm glad you both enjoyed yourselves."
Edmund rose an eyebrow when she said that he was always fun in his own way. "Oh really? I'm fun as I sulk in the corner, refusing to talk with anyone and making small comments to myself about the ridiculousness of it all?" Honestly, Edmund could be quite unpleasant when he wanted to be and during balls he almost always was. He didn't enjoy them in the slightest and Susan knew that better than most. She sighed and then asked a question and Ed froze. She was talking about Addilyn, about whether or not he would speak with her again. "I don't know," he answered honestly.

Susan laughed out loud at Ed’s comment. “You’re probably right; the first time we did really interact he helped fix my wrist. Someone pushed me on the sidewalk and I fell on it the wrong way, and I happened to be closer to St. Mungos than any Muggle hospital,” she explained to him with a smile. That had been an interesting day; Casey was still new to Mediwizard training but he had fixed her wrist perfectly. They had gotten lunch in the Hospitals’ cafeteria, and it just continued on from there. Now he’d met her mother, which to Susan was a huge step in the right direction. She’d never been serious about a boy before, at least not serious enough to think about introducing them to family. “I hope you and he get some time to bond in the future,” she told her brother. Will had met Casey - interrogated him from the sound of it - but her younger siblings hadn’t had too much contact with him. She wanted each member of her family to like Casey because of how important it was to her, how important he was to her. Susan sighed as Ed admitted he didn’t know if he’d ever talk to Addilyn again. She opened her mouth to say something, when she was distracted by the fork of lightning in the sky. “Oh dear,” she said, cowering slightly as the rain began to fall in thick, heavy drops from the sky. “Come on Ed! We need to get inside!” she exclaimed, laughing a little as she ran back towards the castle.

Edmund smiled when his sister laughed. He knew he was right. Susan wouldn't have liked a guy who came off as improper or rude the first time she met him. At least, if she did, it would have taken a long time for her to get over that first impression. At least, that's what he thought. "Well I'm glad he was there to help you then," he answered honestly. Ed did like to see his sister so happy. He nodded at her suggestion. "I'm sure we'll find time to get to know one another." Edmund wasn't really sure how, but hoped that would make Susan feel happier. A storm. Thank goodness. Ed didn't want to talk about Addi and he knew that was where the conversation was headed, until the lightning flashed through the sky. He laughed when Susan cowered and the rain started. He followed her, though a little more slowly. Honestly he was only going back in because he knew that if he didn't, Susan wouldn't either and she obviously really wanted to. Still, once they got back inside, he slipped away from her soon enough and went back outside. He liked being outside in the storms, though he knew Susan wouldn't like knowing that he stayed out in them more often than not. At least in a storm he could feel some semblance of peace and relaxation. --- the end --- @susanvictoria
