Rory nodded when Emmy guessed the bottle cap. "Yeah, your turn," he told her with a smile. He was never good at this game. He always chose the obvious objects, so it was easy to guess when he was in charge. Then he laughed at her declaration. An hour and forty-nine minutes. That meant they started about 2 hours from the place ... which meant this was going to be a long ride. "Have you ever heard of the A-B-C game?" he asked as the looked at the billboards standing by the side of the road. If not, maybe that would be able to entertain her for a bit.

01 june, 2005 Rory declared that it was her turn, but before Emmy could find a good object to use on I Spy, he asked her if she had ever heard of the A-B-C game. That sounded like a lot more fun than I Spy, probably because they had a limited number of objects in the car, which made it plenty easy to guess what was being looked at. “Nope, I haven’t.” Emmy answered. “Explain.” She commanded. She looked guiltily at her aunt and uncle, expecting them to scold her for being rude, but apparently they had given up on making Emmy a civilized person, because they didn’t nag her about not saying please. Just for that, Emmy was going to be a good person. “Please and thank you.” She tacked on, though the words weren’t particularly polite – just said extremely quickly.

Rory smiled when she said that she hadn't played the game and then nodded seriously. "Well it goes like this. Looking outside the car, you're trying to find words with a letter of the alphabet in them. Like A in airport, B in billboard. The point is to find every letter in order. The first person to finish the entire alphabet wins." He waited for her to tell him what she thought about the game. If she liked it, they'd play. If not ... they'd find something else to do. If they did play, Rory had a feeling that Emmy would win. She was a fast talker.

01 june, 2005 Rory’s explanation of the game seemed simple enough – but when Emmy actually paused to think about it, she had one glaring question. “Is there a no repeats rule?” She asked. Otherwise it seemed like they could just repeat each other from A to Y, and then whoever could find a letter Z first would win. If there was such a rule, though, it seemed like whoever was the faster talker, or had a better attention span to be able to look outside the windows for longer, would win. In the former case, where the faster talker won, then Emmy would be a shoo-in for the game. If it was about attention functions, though, she wasn’t so sure.

Rory smiled at Emmy's question. Of course she would ask something like that. He nodded, "Yeah, there's a rule about that. You can't use the same word as someone else. In fact," he added, "you can't use two letters in the same word at all, even if their different and you found the word. You want to play?" He wasn't sure if her asking questions about the game was her way of saying she was interested in playing or if she was just curious. Either way, he hoped she'd want to play. This game might be able to last a bit longer than "I Spy."

01 june, 2005 Emmy nodded when Rory said that there was a rule about word repetition. She hadn’t expected any less, but it was nice to know that the rule did indeed exist, and she wasn’t the only one who thought of loopholes that could potentially be used for cheating. “Sure, let’s play!” This one didn’t seem as boring as I Spy, because you could actually use the things you saw on the road, as opposed to being trapped into using only things that were in the car. Emmy immediately began looking for things that contained the letter a. Even though she had just been thinking about things that were outside of the car, the first thing that jumped into her head was actually on the car’s interior. “Aunt?” She asked, looking at Rory to make sure she was doing this right. @rory

Rory smiled when Emmy seemed so enthusiastic about the game. It was fun to be with someone who liked to try new things, especially when that person was Emmy, he just didn't know if she'd be interested in something like this. When she said Aunt hesitantly, he looked at her with a smile. "Is the word written somewhere or are you talking about your Aunt? Because the second one wouldn't count, but the first one would," he told her before turning to look out the window again. Then he saw a road sign, stating how many miles it was to the closest city, which he actually couldn't pronounce, but it had an "A" in it. He tapped Emmy's shoulder enthusiastically and pointed. "That one! I can't read it, but that word has my A."

01 june, 2005 Oh. Emmy felt the slightest bit silly, because she hadn’t realized that the words had to be written down to count. Rory tapped her on the shoulder to show her a sign that was whizzing past, stating the distance to the next city. “Lochalsh.” Emmy enunciated, the name rolling off of her tongue in her Scottish brogue. It didn’t sound quite the same when Rory said Scottish city names in his British accent, especially when he didn’t know how to pronounce them. Now Emmy was beginning to understand more of how the game was played, and she did not like being behind. Luckily for Emmy, the next sign that they came upon also had an A in it. “Rest area!” She said, shaking Rory’s arm a little to make sure he would see the sign and know that she was now tied for him in letters (if she had managed to get it right this time). @rory

Rory smiled when she said the name of the city. He loved hearing her accent. Even though he'd been living in Scotland for a while, he still wasn't entirely used to the accent and he still found it fascinating. Then she said rest area, shaking him and he turned to see the sign. He smiled at her. "Good job!" He congratulated her sincerely. He turned his attention back to the area nearby. He wanted to at least make her work for it. Soon enough he was to letter "i" and smiled when he saw the exit sign. "Exit!" he told Emmy cheerfully, looking around but a little more relaxed now. The letter "j" was always a harder one to find.

01 june, 2005 Emmy was definitely not good at this game. By the time that Rory was at the letter I, she was still only on the letter G. When he yelled out the exit sign, Emmy rolled her eyes. “Boo!” She jeered at Rory, still keeping her eyes peeled for something that had the letter G in it. Finally, they rolled by a sign for a motel, the Grand Motel. How a motel could be grand, Emmy had no idea, but Emmy poked Rory in the ribs and pointed at the sign. It was only then that she realized her mistake. Beneath the name of the motel, it boasted that it had the best orange juice in town. She had just given Rory the next letter that he needed, so she was still behind. Emmy made a soft, frustrated noise beneath her breath, and half-hoped that Rory would miss the tagline about the juice. @rory

Emmy wasn't doing badly at this game, especially considering the fact that it was her first time playing. She was only a few letters behind him. Rory wasn't really trying to go fast and beat her- especially not since he knew how much she loved winning- but it was a new sensation for him to do so well in something against her. She normally won everything. Not that Rory minded, he was used to her winning, but he enjoyed the sensation at the moment. He smiled and gave a soft chuckle when she pointed to a sign. "J in juice," he whispered softly, smiling at Emmy. Was she enjoying this or was she going to want to quit? He wasn't entirely sure, but he decided to continue until she said something.

01 june, 2005 Emmy let out a long, drawn-out sigh when Rory realized that there was the line about juice in the sign she had pointed out. She was still behind, but she knew if she tried to quit now, everyone in the car would know that she was just doing it because she was losing. Emmy didn’t want to lose, but she didn’t want to be called a quitter, either, which meant that she was just going to have to look harder. Squinting out the window was starting to hurt her eyes a little, but she didn’t want to stop looking when she was behind. After a few minutes of looking in vain for an H, Emmy drew her eyes back inside of the car, rubbing her eyes to see if that would make them stop hurting so much before turning back to her window. @rory

Emmy wasn't saying anything and Rory wasn't sure if it was because he was winning or because she was intently looking out the window trying to find her next letter. He was looking for a K now, but after he heard her sigh, he paused in his searching, though he tried not to show it. Was she alright? He noticed when she stopped looking out the window and began rubbing her eyes. She wasn't smiling, which meant she probably wasn't really enjoying herself. Not entirely a surprise since this game normally took a while and a lot of focus. Emmy was easily distracted, which meant she and the game didn't quite fit together. After a few minutes, he turned and leaned back against the chair, closing his eyes. "I'm tired, Emmy. I'm gonna forfeit the game." He had no idea how she'd respond to that, but he didn't want to force her to play with him, so he'd just bow out. Then they could do something else.

Emmy hadn’t even realized how little she was enjoying the game until Rory said that he was tired and he was going to forfeit. What upset her was that she couldn’t tell whether she wasn’t enjoying it because her eyes hurt and she didn’t like to focus, or because she was losing. And she also couldn’t tell whether Rory was actually tired, or was just taking pity on her. If it was the former, she didn’t want to insist that they kept playing, but if it was the latter, then her pride was probably going to be wounded forever. “Okay. Maybe I’ll take a nap, too.” Napping was always a great way to pass the time on a car ride, though Emmy wasn’t normally good at winding down enough to sleep, and especially not to nap, but if Rory was going to nap because he was tired, then it wasn’t like she’d have anything to do other than bother her aunt and uncle – and that would disturb Rory, so she couldn’t even do that. Emmy rested her head against the glass of the window, and closed her eyes, trying in vain to fall asleep.

Rory had never been one to sleep in moving vehicles, whether it be a bus, train or car, but he was trying now. He didn't want Emmy to feel like he was taking pity on her, even though that was exactly what she was doing. He nodded when she said that maybe she would try to nap. He forced a yawn and then reached to pick a pillow up off the floor of the car, where he'd seen it when he got in. He laid down, smiling over at Emmy before closing his eyes. For the longest time he just lay there, pretending like he was sleeping and listening to the sounds around him. He didn't want to get up too early.
After what felt (and he hoped actually was) hours, Rory faked a yawn and sat up. "How much further do we have to go," he whispered to Emmy's aunt and uncle, trying not to wake her up.
