Despite her aching eyes and the natural, lulling rhythm of the car on the highway, Emmy couldn’t bring herself to sleep. She didn’t know how long she feigned sleep, and she didn’t dare glance over at Rory, in case he was awake and noticed that everything she was doing was just an elaborate ploy. It must have been at least an hour before she heard Rory’s whisper break through the silence. Emmy’s eyelids fluttered open, and she propped herself upwards, glancing at the clock. Before her aunt or uncle could answer Rory, Emmy did. “Only about a half an hour more.” She supplied, surprised that she had been able to fake a nap for that long, since sitting still wasn’t in her normal skill set. Emmy made sure to drag on her words somewhat, as if she was still trying to shake off sleep. “Do you want to play a game or just watch?” She asked. Now that they weren’t in a familiar area, watching out the window probably would be more entertaining than it had been when they were close to their homes.

Oh, she was awake! Rory was relieved that he didn't need to pretend to be asleep anymore. He was glad that he'd been quiet for so long though, because it sure seemed like Emmy was able to get some rest, which was probably good for her. Still, he was glad that she was awake now. Especially since they were in a new, unfamiliar area and only had to wait half an hour until they'd arrive at their destination. "I want to look out the window," Rory said as he looked, entranced, at the countryside as it passed by. He loved drives like this, loved the opportunity to see the countryside and enjoy it. After a minute he turned to his friend. "Unless you have a game that you want to play." Rory could look out the window for hours, but he knew Emmy was a little harder to entertain than that. If she wanted to do something, he was definitely willing to join her. He didn't want her to be bored ... that would probably end up in some sort of explosion of activity. Like her throwing the items on the floor at him. Or ... doing something else unexpected. It was better to offer her the chance to do something instead of just window watching.

Rory said that he just wanted to look out the window, which was fine for Emmy. It was probably better for her if she didn’t let her competitive spirit come out when they were supposed to be having a good time. Rory asked if there was a game that she wanted to play, and Emmy just shook her head. “No, we can watch.” She told him firmly. “You’ll be able to tell when we’re getting close because there’s a lot of signs for the farm.” Despite the copious signage, though, the berry farm never seemed to be overly crowded, and there were always more berries than any one person – or a hundred people – could pick by hand in the time allotted to them. Emmy smiled a little at the thought of getting out of the cramped car and getting to show Rory all of her favorite berry spots. Adults who came to the farm generally didn’t like to bend down to get the berries, so for kids like them there was always an easier time finding berries to pick at their eye level.

Rory watched out the window, getting more excited as the minutes passed by. He'd never been to this berry farm before, but Emmy was very excited about it, which meant that it was definitely going to be fun. Besides, he loved eating berries. As he watched outside, he noticed that Emmy was right. There were an increasing amount of signs on the side of the road, advertising the farm they were going to. "Emmy, that one says "next right," he told her in excitement, turning around to look at her since he couldn't hold in his enthusiasm anymore. Her aunt and uncle turned, pulling into the farm and his grin widened. "You're not going to leave me behind, are you?" he asked as the car came to a stop. He knew Emmy knew the best places for berries and he didn't want to miss out on it.

On Emmy’s side of the car, there weren’t many signs to be seen – the view out of her window was just the traffic going in the other direction. She didn’t mind that, but when Rory said something about a sign saying the farm was on the next right, she turned just in time to see it whiz past. “Yes, it did!” She agreed enthusiastically. “Good reading, Rory.” Emmy teased. They were young enough that there were still some words that escaped them when it came to reading, but ‘next right’ was firmly within their skill level, so Emmy didn’t feel bad teasing Rory about it. When the car stopped, Emmy was instantly opening her door, ready to go wild. Rory asked if she was going to leave behind, and Emmy grinned at him. “I won’t have to leave you behind if you keep up!” Emmy said. She ran to the entrance of the farm, grabbing a basket on her way, and then took off towards the strawberry field at a breakneck pace.

Rory made a face at Emmy when she teased him for his reading. He was actually very good at reading and they both knew it, so he was quite aware of the fact that she had to be teasing him. As soon as the car stopped, Emmy was hopping out and Rory climbed out quickly. He knew what the answer to his question would be, even before she said it. She smiled at him and then took off and Rory ran behind her as fast as he could, though he couldn't match her speed. He noticed her grabbing a basket as she ran and he did the same. Rory slowly fell further behind, but he made sure to keep Emmy in sight so he wouldn't lose her. He didn't think that this would be much fun if he was wandering around on his own. "Emmy," he called when he noticed her slowing in front. "Wait just a second." He wasn't too far behind, but he did want to catch up before she disappeared into the bushes or something. He stopped, inhaling deeply as he tried to catch his breath.

Emmy was a little out of breath by the time she started slowing, but when she started looking back, her friend was in much, much worse shape. Rory told her to wait just a second, and Emmy was tempted to take off again just to spite him. She didn’t, though, just because it wasn’t as fun to pick berries on your own. “You look like a tomato, Rory!” She called out with a loud laugh. “Or maybe a strawberry!” Rory’s face was bright red from exertion, and Emmy was sure that she didn’t look much better. Since she was naturally much paler than Rory, if anything, her own flush would be more amplified. Emmy began swinging the basket she was holding back and forth while also rocking back and forth on her feet. “Come on!” She whined. Berry picking was no fun if she didn’t get to pick any berries because Rory was too slow!

Emmy was not going slow, which definitely went along with what Rory expected, but he hoped she'd slow down for him. Then she stopped, waiting for him when he asked her to, making fun of him as he ran towards her. "I'm fine," he said when he finally reached her. Why was she so much faster than he was anyway? They ran around together all the time. "Ok, lead the way," he said, not giving himself a second to catch his breath. Really, Rory just wanted to stay with her, so maybe not taking a break would keep his muscles warm or something. Probably not, but it was worth a shot. As soon as she started moving again, he followed as quick as he could, trying to stay right with her.

Rory finally caught up to her, by which time Emmy was practically vibrating with excitement. He said that he was fine, and she made a face at him. “Good, because I’m not waiting for you if you faint.” Emmy sniffed. She loved Rory, she really did, but there were some things that were much more interesting than a fainted Rory, and berry picking was one of those things. Emmy held her hand out to Rory so that he had no excuse for being slow this time, continuing to lead them through the endless berry bushes. Finally, she found an area that looked like it hadn’t been touched by anyone, not even the adults who could reach the higher branches. Emmy plucked a strawberry of the nearest bush and held it out to Rory. “Your first fresh strawberry.” She announced. “It’ll be good.” Emmy promised, picking a berry for herself but waiting for Rory before she ate it.

Rory rolled his eyes when Emmy teased him about not waiting for him. At least, he thought she was teasing. Maybe not. Still, he wasn't planning on fainting so it shouldn't be a problem. He took her offered hand and went with her as she led him through the bushes. Rory didn't know why she wasn't stopping, but he was too out of breath to ask her why. He'd know when they stopped. Eventually she was satisfied with something and they did stop. She offered a strawberry and Rory took it, biting instantly. His eyes widened in surprise at the brilliant flavor. "That is wonderful, Emmy," he told her once he swallowed. Rory was already reaching for another, grinning at his best friend. This was a fabulous idea!

When they stopped to pick berries, Rory seemed winded again, and Emmy had to bite her lip to keep herself from making fun of him for it. Her aunt and uncle were always getting on her for teasing Rory too much, but of course it was impossible to explain that was just how their friendship worked. Adults didn’t seem to understand that teasing was a part of every healthy relationship! (This was also, of course, Emmy’s only real friend… so how was she supposed to know if she was treating him the right way?) Rory took the berry from Emmy, and then complimented her on its taste, even though she’d had nothing to do with it. “Of course it is!” Emmy said rather smugly. “Because it was my idea, and all my ideas are wonderful.” With that, Emmy ate her own berry, and then gestured to their baskets. “And we get to pick all that we can carry!” For them, it wasn’t as much as for her aunt and uncle, but Emmy wasn’t concerned whatsoever with what they were doing. No matter what, they’d have enough berries to last them quite a while.

All of this really just seemed to good to be true for Rory. He was worth his best friend, picking berries and there was no school for ages! They had all summer to mess around and spend together and he really couldn't imagine something he'd rather do. Emmy was his best friend and the only person (other than his father of course) that card enough about him to try to help him through the loss of his mother. He didn't care how much she teased him or how many other friends she had. All Rory knew was that he had someone who cared and he loved it. He laughed when she basically bragged that she'd been right. Rory want really surprised. So far in their friendship, Emmy was right about most things. He smiled at her. "Thanks for bringing me along Emmy. This is great!" He watched her eat one and then picked another one, enjoying the juicy goodness as she told him they could pick add many as they wanted. Rory grinned at her. "I bet I can pick me than you," he teased. He already knew she'd beat him but he liked watching her be competitive. He thought it was funny that she was always trying to win.

Emmy beamed at Rory when he said that the berry farm was great. It was fun to come here with her aunt and uncle, but there was something special about getting to share the experience with her best friend. Emmy wished that she could turn off her cockiness for just a moment so that her response would seem more genuine. “Anything for you, Rory.” She said, as sweetly as she could… until he challenged her. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Roman Williams.” Emmy said, smiling slightly menacingly at Rory. She knew that she could beat him – she was faster and she had gone berry-picking before and she was more competitive than Rory was. There was no way that she could lose! Right? “Okay, on three.” Emmy said, deciding that she would have to take the initiative to start the competition. “One… two…” Emmy took off before she could even say three, her laughter carrying on the breeze as she ran to a different bush so that she could pick without bumping elbows with Rory, and without worrying that he would steal berries for her basket… though honestly that was probably more like a tactic that she would employ than he would. Emmy’s fingers flew across the berry bushes, plucking strawberries with quick, precise movements. Emmy was being about as methodical as a seven-year-old could be (which was, admittedly, not methodical at all). She would let Rory decide when the competition was over.

Rory smiled when Emmy said she would do anything for him. He believed her. Why wouldn't he? He was young and they were best friends so he was positively certain that if he ever needed her, Emmy would be there for her. This, bringing him to pick berries, was much simpler than anything else he could have asked from her. He laughed when she said that his challenge was dangerous. Oh, he knew it. Emmy was extremely competitive and he was pretty sure that she would win. She said that they would start on three and Rory nodded at her. "Sounds good to me." She counted to two and then took off, laughing. Rory laughed as well, turning to his bush as he started picking teh strawberries. He was sure that Emmy was better than him at this, but it wasn't really difficult to pick berries. It didn't take long for his basket to be mostly over. "Okay, one more minute!" He called to Emmy, though it was pointless. It wasn't like he had a watch or anything to keep time with. So ... they'd have to guesstimate, which meant they'd probably have a couple more minutes.

Emmy tried her best not to look at Rory while they were doing their competition – it slowed her down, after all, and she couldn’t afford to be slow in a competition – but she was curious as to how her friend was doing, and she was proud to see that he was picking berries at a pretty steady clip. Not as fast as she was, of course, but Rory was trying his best, and that was all that she really asked of him. It was all that he asked of her when they were doing things that he was better at than her. Emmy wasn’t sure how long it had been when Rory announced that they only had a minute left, but she did know that her basket was filled to the brim. It would probably be better if she stopped picking berries, because that would mean not having a precarious pile that would spill over the sides, but Emmy wanted to make sure that she was the winner of their competition! When Emmy finished counting to sixty (because of course she started counting the moment Rory announced they had a minute left), she let out a loud cry. “Finished!” She said happily, skipping over to where Rory was so they could count their berries.
