Brandon cringed as Irina told her story. There was a reason that he was not studying to be a healer. He was not big into injuries or healing or pain at all. In fact, when he was with someone who was injured, he often got a bit queasy, though he tried to hide that from others. No reason to let that become widely known. He nodded at the end of her story. "Makes sense. I'm sure I'd be terrified of that as well if I went through that," he told her honestly. A sly grin covered Brandon's face at her challenge. He didn't want to seem cocky, but he'd never been introduced to an instrument that he couldn't play quickly, so he wasn't worried about it. He followed her to the Room of Requirement and then waited as she made her requests and opened the room. He led the way into the room, grinning at the sight of so many instruments and cases. This was definitely going to be fun. She handed him a trumpet and Brandon took it confidently. He'd played one of these before. In fact, he knew most band/orchestra instruments due to his "muggle" upbringing. He lifted it to his lips and blew, playing "God Save the Queen" easily. Why not? Irina Rose Krum

Irina gave Brandon a soft smile when he said how he understood her fear of bats. "My brother made fun of me for a little while after it happened, but then he was told off by my father who had been the one to find me so it stopped pretty quickly," she told him with a little reassurance. She turned her attention though to the matter at hand; she had challenged Brandon not-so-discreetly at playing whatever instrument caught her fancy, and play it at least somewhat in tune. Her first choice had been the trumpet, and she couldn't help but giggle as he began to play 'God Save the Queen'. "The Queen would approve, perhaps you should petition to play in her marching band," Irina told him, clapping a little when he was done. He had done well; Irina was rather glad she hadn't bet any money or anything on it
She strolled through the rows of instruments, wondering what would pose a challenge for Brandon, who seemed to be able to play anything. She wondered if she was going about this challenge all wrong; perhaps he could play an instrument, but what if she set the tune for him to play as well? "Let's go with the Clarinet," she finally said, selecting the square box properly marked and handing it over to him. "But, as an added challenge. You played the English national anthem, now what about Germanys' anthem, since so many of your schoolmates are from there," she told him, issuing the next part of her challenge.

Brandon nodded as she explained a little bit more about what happened, but he didn't really know what to say about it. He had no idea what it would be like to go through what she went through. Life -changing, for sure. He smiled when she teased him, saying that the Queen would approve of his playing. That was a nice idea, though it definitely wasn't going to happen. He watched curiously as she looked through the instruments, choosing what she wanted him to try next. He smiled when she gave him the Clarinet. He'd played one of these before. It wasn't his favorite, but he could do it. Then she had another request. "Uhh ... could you show me what it sounds like? Then I can play it?" He could play anything, but not if he didn't know what it sounded like. Irina Rose Krum

Irina laughed a little when Brandon smiled as she handed him the clarinet. “I see finding an instrument you haven’t played yet will be difficult,” she said teasingly, smiling all the same. She supposed he had certainly been telling the truth when he said he could play any instrument he picked up. He did not, however know the German national anthem. “Of course,” she told him. She picked up the case carrying the flute and pieced the silver instrument together. She held it to her lips and began to play the German national anthem. She remembered that her mother was German, and pushed back the memory of Daniels’ nationality as she continued to play the piece. Finally, the last note sounded and she put the flute back in her lap. “Something like that,” she said. “My mother is from Germany originally, and, well, you know my father is Bulgarian. They both went to Durmstrang but didn’t actually meet until after my mother graduated,” she added as a side note. Her parents hadn’t met due to their age difference in school, but once they did it had been love at first sight for Viktor and Elena. Irina wondered if she’d ever have that kind of feeling when meeting someone, or if just one day she’d wake up and realize someone had been staring at her in the face this whole time. She supposed that had happened with her first relationship; it could certainly happen again. “Your turn,” she said, nodding at the clarinet. @brandon German National Anthem

Brandon shrugged when Irina said it would be hard to find an instrument he hadn't played yet. "Not necessarily," he told her honestly, "but even if I haven't played it before, I won't tell you that." It made it more of a challenge for Brandon to make it look like he knew how to play everything, so it seemed like a good idea to add that into part of the game. He listened carefully as she played the German national anthem, closing his eyes after a few seconds so he could let the music control his thoughts. She stopped playing and spoke for a minute, explaining things about her home to him. He listened, but didn't really know what to say, so he nodded respectfully. Then she told him it was his turn and Brandon smiled. He lifted the clarinet to his lips and played the song she showed him minutes before, adding in his own small changes to make it his own. He loved changing songs to make them more his own and hoped that wouldn't mean it didn't count as doing a good job on the song. Once he was done he lowered the clarinet and smiled at Irina. "So? What do you think?" he asked after a few seconds. Irina Rose Krum

Irina scrunched up her nose and made a face at Brandon as he admitted he wouldn’t necessarily tell her if he hadn’t played an instrument she chose before. “Well perhaps I’ll know if you’ve played before by the way it sounds,” she said teasingly. She watched and listened as he picked up the clarinet to play the German national anthem. It was good, very good actually, and if she wasn’t mistaken he was putting his own little spin on the song. When he asked what she thought she gave a short round of applause and smiled. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you added a few notes of your own in there,” she said, not bothering to hide the fact that she was impressed. She wandered around the room full of instruments, until she spotted an interesting one. “Help me with this one,” she called, and they tugged a full on harp into the center of the room. “Well as you know this is the harp, but what about the tune to play…” she trailed off, thinking hard. They had done two National Anthems so far, but that was quickly getting old. What would be something difficult but, at the same time entertaining, on the harp? She snapped her fingers together and grinned. “My dad, shockingly enough, was a huge fan of eighties rock music. Journey, Def Lepard, the like. My challenge to you is to play a song of your choosing on the harp. It has to be well known; something super obscure and I will think you’re just making it up,” she challenged, crossing her arms with an air of triumph. This, in her opinion, was a bigger challenge than the other two, and she found herself thrilling with anticipation at what he’d do next.

Brandon smirked at Irina. She thought she'd be able to tell if he'd played an instrument before by the way it sounded? The idea was a cute one, but entirely unrealistic. Playing instruments was his life and he'd played almost all of them. The ones he hadn't were so obscure that he hadn't thought of them or they were so similar to a different instrument that he didn't bother practicing with both. He had complete confidence in his ability as a musician. She seemed to like his version of the German national anthem and Brandon nodded and smiled when she commented that he added his own notes into the song. So she'd noticed. That was cool. He helped her move the harp and then sat down next to it, plucking some of the strings as he listened to her challenge. Brandon smiled and nodded thoughtfully. "Bring it on," he told Irina before thinking. Lots of songs came to his mind almost immediately, but he wanted to pick a good one so he continued thinking for a short while. Then a song by John Denver came to mind. The man had been famous and had a similar style to some of Brandon's favorites. So he began to play Annie's song for Irina on the harp. Irina took a seat across from him and folded her hands in her lap, waiting patiently as Brandon contemplated a song to play. As he began, Irina had to admit she did not recognize the song at first. A few notes in, a memory stirred within the depths of her mind, faint at first, but as he continued to play it became more and more visible. Her and her father, who had a strange love of everything from the 1980s, dancing around with her on a summer night when she must have been eight or nine years old. There were fireflies buzzing around and she could hear her father telling her ‘we’ll dance to this song at your wedding’. The memory made her feel a mix of emotions, and she could feel the tears pinprick at the corner of her eyes. It had only been a month since Dan left, two months since they had discussed their future together at the Yule Ball. It had seemed a sure thing that they would grow old together, and now that was just over. Irina realized Brandon had finished as she got lost within the music and her own thoughts, and smiled over at him. “My father loves that song,” she told him softly. She took a deep breath and felt the trickle of the betraying tear slide down her face. “Sorry,” she said quickly, wiping it off her face and chuckling a little. She didn’t want to talk about her depressing love life after all, so she looked around to find the next instrument. “What about the cello? Something classical,” she suggested, looking back at him with a small smile.

Irina was almost incredibly quiet as Brandon played. At first he was looking at his hands and wasn't quite sure if that was a good thing or not. Then he looked up and she was crying! She didn't look angry, but his rendition of the song was either really touching or he'd done something wrong. Brandon wasn't sure which it was. Still, he continued with the song until it was over, hoping she wasn't wanting him to stop. That would be awkward. Once he'd finished the song, Brandon was about to ask Irina if she was alright when she told him that her father loved that song. Ahh. Was that why she was so emotional about it. She apologized and Brandon gave a quick smile, "No, don't worry about it," he told her, looking away so he didn't make her feel even more uncomfortable. He looked up at her next suggestion and smiled. He loved the cello. "Alright," he said, moving to grab the instrument almost immediately. He then began playing the Cello Suite No. 1 by Bach. It was one of the more famous pieces, but it was still one of his favorites. Hopefully it wouldn't make her emotional again. Irina Rose Krum song

Irina still felt a bit bad and hoped her emotional reaction wasn’t too awkward. Luckily Brandon seemed to take it in stride and went right over to the cello. Once again he sounded like a natural, but it was different. Irina could tell he had definitely played before and held a love for this particular instrument and it showed in his playing. She recognized it of course; she’d be a terrible orchestra member if she didn’t! Thankfully it didn’t want to make her cry; she closed her eyes and nodded along with the music, letting it envelop her. She let everything go, all the emotions she was feeling over her breakup with Dan and subsequent departure, Ripley’s accident, her brother becoming a father, and just was.
As he finished, Irina opened her eyes and smiled. “I can tell you love the cello, just by the feeling you put into playing,” she told him. “If you ever want to come to orchestra practice, you’re more than welcome to join us,” she added with a smile. She wasn’t sure exactly what would be going on with orchestra since Andy was no longer the clubs’ captain, but she was sure that someone would step up soon. “Okay, last one,” she said, getting up and looking at the instruments the room had procured for them. Finally, she found one. “Right, the bassoon, try your luck,” she told him, proudly displaying the instrument.

At least this time she didn't seem as upset as she had before. That was a relief. Brandon hated it when his emotions elicited a bad reactions from others. He really didn't know how to respond and that was exactly what was happening now. Brandon gave Irina a return smile, glad that she seemed better now. "I love all my instruments," he countered. "But I know the cello more than some." Quite hoenstly, his favorites were the piano and the guitar, but Brandon loved everything and anything. He couldn't resist any and all instruments. He watched curiously when Irina started walking around the room, looking for the last instrument to test Brandon with. She lifted up a bassoon and Brandon stood, walking over to her and taking the instrument. "Prepare yourself," he teased before he started to play it. This was too much fun. He played the instrument easily, with the air of someone who had done it before, which he had. The song wasn't as well-known, it was an old song. He played it and then set the instrument down, looking at Irina with a superior expression. "So ... do I pass?" He asked, knowing full-well the answer. Irina Rose Krum

Irina stood up straighter, fighting a smile as Brandon told her to prepare herself. She wondered if it was a losing battle in trying to find an instrument he couldn't play well. Perhaps that was his special power; Irina saw future disasters in her sleep, and Brandon could pick up any instrument and play it beautifully. Personally, she thought he was definitely getting the better ability. Irina was still not used to waking up terrified in the middle of the night having seen something horrible, and she doubted she ever would get used to it. When he asked what she thought, Irina pretended to ponder her answer. She didn't want to give away her impressed stance on his music ability that easily. "Hmm...."she said thoughtfully, then grinned. "Would you really have believed me if I said no?" she asked, half teasingly. She looked around the room full of instruments rather wistfully. "I wish we had students, multiple emphasis on the s there, that could play all these instruments together, like a real live orchestra," she said dreamily. She shook her head with a smile. "Well, I will simply have to think of something even more outlandish for next time," she said, the hint of a challenge in her voice. "I had a nice time today though," she added, hoping he had had fun too.

He watched her closely as he waited for her answer to his question. He knew Irina liked it, even though she wasn't coming outright and saying it, he was just getting that vibe from her. After all, it wasn't hard to be able tot ell when someone didn't like your music. He laughed when she asked if he'd believe it if she answered no. "I definitely would not believe you," he told her with a grin. That was basically her admitting that he did a great job and won the challenge. He smiled as she said she wished there were enough students who liked music enough that they could have a live orchestra. "That would be fun," he commented, agreeing with her. While he knew that wizards and witches liked music just as much as muggles, their priority in school generally was not music. Which was okay. It made things easier for him. "I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did too. We should try this again sometime or something," he took a deep breath, "but it looks like it's time for dinner now. Let's go get some grub!" He smiled and walked toward the door of the Room of Requirement. He was ready to eat. --- the end --- Irina Rose Krum
