Viola nodded when Maria made the ocean in a bottle comment. “Though, honestly, can you bottle something like that?” Saltwater and sand was well and good, but it just wasn’t the same when not carried to their nose by a stiff ocean breeze. “I would have thought you’d like the smell of smoke.” Viola mused. It would certainly be a reason to set things on fire fairly often.
Viola raised their eyebrows when Maria said that Samuel was a good decoy. “A good decoy in what way?” They asked. They were prepared to bristle if Maria said that Samuel was her fake boyfriend, even though at that point the two of them hadn’t been together. “Interesting.” Viola commented idly when Maria said her companion was twenty-five. He was a full seven years older, with a few months tacked on, too, depending on when Maria’s birthday was. That was something that Viola needed to learn, they thought quietly. “You think I’d be any good at the Ministry?” Viola asked, always wanting more information on their pursuit of a post-graduation career.

"Anything is possible with magic." Maria stated simply. "Or, I could just wear amortentia as perfume. That'd work too." She added after a moment's thought. Using the most powerful love potion in existance as a perfume was probably a terrible idea, but at least she wouldn't have to worry about owning different kinds! It would naturally change to whatever attracted the other person the most. Besides, the smell was much more harmless then actual comsumption... Viola would probably strongly disapprove. As for her and smoke,.. Maria smiled innocently. "I didn't say I didn't have a favorite smell." Because she most certainly did. And it was most certainly smoke.
"Oh, being older. Also has dreadlocks, long ones. He stands out enough that it's easy to blend in." Like she said, a good decoy. They were pretty great dreadlocks too, and she wasn't afraid to admit that. As for if Viola would be any good at the Ministry... "Would you want to work at the Ministry? Doing what?"

“Raising the dead isn’t.” Viola shot back when Maria said that anything was possible with magic. Of all of the different limitations put on magic in various Muggle movies, raising the dead was the only one that stuck. People could even be made to fall in love with a potion. And speaking of that… “That seems like a waste of an expensive, powerful potion.” Viola said. Not to mention that it was more than a little unethical to try to attract people in that way, especially since Maria already had the Veela Charm working for her. “It’s smoke, right?” Viola asked when Maria said she hadn’t ruled out having a favorite smell earlier.
Viola nodded along at Maria’s description of Samuel. If they ever saw a tall, dreadlocked guy around, they were going to have a few words with him. When Maria asked about the Ministry, Viola shrugged their shoulders. “I don’t really know. I didn’t think that far ahead.” They admitted. “I just don’t know where my future is going to take me, and the Ministry seems like an easy starter job.” Viola said with a shrug.

Maria let out a sigh and rolled her eyes. Viola wasn't supposed to prove her wrong, especially not that easily and quickly. "That depends on what you consider 'raising the dead'." She argued. You could make Inferi. They were dead bodies after all. So 'technically' raising the dead. You know, without any sort of consciousness...
"A waste? I think it 's a brilliant idea. You'd never have to buy any other sort of perfume." was Mara's smug retort. Of course, the potion would be much more expensive. But, did Maria need the extra help in attracting partners? Probably not. "It might be." The girl grinned widely. It was always so satisfying to smell smoke. Things burning. Especially when she was the one that started it. Speaking of, she'd set surprisingly few fires as of late... Her hands itched from that thought.
"So do you know what you want to do then?" Maria found herself asking curiously as she glanced over at her partner. They were halfway through their seventh year. They'd be out in the world as 'adults' in less then six months. Most of their yearmates at least had an idea of what they wanted to do. And Maria? Well... she had a few possibilities. "The ministry here, or back home? They must be vastly different from each other." Each country had their own magical government, each run slightly differently. Did Viola want to stay here after graduation, or return to their home country?

Viola shook their head when Maria said that the dead could be raised in some senses. It couldn’t bring a person’s soul back, and that was the most important part of them, so making undead creatures wasn’t the same, in Viola’s opinion. Besides, it was Dark magic, and that was not their favorite thing.
“You know what I mean.” Viola said, waving their hand at Maria casually. Viola smirked when Maria all but said that smoke was her favorite scent. That would be good to remember, though Viola wasn’t sure when, exactly, that would become useful.
Maria asked if they knew what they were going to do, and Viola was about to open their mouth to protest they had just said they didn’t have a clue, when Maria made her question more specific, asking Viola whether they would stay in the United Kingdom or return to Bulgaria and Durmstrang. She was certainly right in saying that they were different. “I think I’m gonna stay here.” Viola said, nonchalant as possible. “My dad’s been considering moving for a while, since back home he’s not exactly the most popular of people.” He was too extreme for most folks’ liking, and eventually being hated wore a guy down. Viola hadn’t heard anything from their mother since the incident in November, but her opinion didn’t matter, since she didn’t have custody of either of her children. “Are you going to stay?” Elias had a handful of half-siblings, and Viola had no doubt that if he stayed, Maria would stay, too.

Maria rolled her eyes and smirked at that little wave and comment. Reaching out she caught Viola's hand in her own and laced her fingers through theirs. "I'd smell like the ocean in a bottle if I did. Wouldn't you like that?" Maria teased lightly.
Maria's smirk disappeared when the question was turned on her. If she would be staying here or going home. 'Home' for her happened to be to the far north of Viola's. Maria's grandparents lived in Sweden. But home.... Not really. It'd never been home to her. Never. "Not like I have anywhere else to go." That had come out a little sharper than she'd intended, but it was a fact. She'd never go back to her Grandparents. No matter ow much they tried.

Viola paused to consider Maria’s question. “Why would I want to smell the ocean, when I could smell you?” They asked quietly, in a rare moment of openness. The hoped it didn’t sound too strange. This, Viola thought to themself as they threaded their fingers through Maria’s, was why they did not do romance.
Maria seemed angry when she said that she didn’t have anywhere else to go, but Viola just nodded. “If you ever need a place to crash, my door’s always open.” They doubted their dad would be excited that Viola had invited someone who he had never met into their house, no strings attached, especially since that person was easily capable of turning their home into ash, but he trusted Viola’s judgement well enough, so hopefully it wouldn’t be a problem. “So, do you know what you want to do?” Viola asked. Just because they didn’t have a clue didn’t mean Maria didn’t.

Maria almost awed at Viola's quiet words. They weren't the most open of people, much like herself, but they also weren't the most flirtatious which was completely opposite Maria's behavior. So when Viola did offer up a flirtatious comment? It was definitely a gem. "Are you saying you like the way I smell?' Maria teased lightly as she squeezed Viola's hand.
That... was an offer Maria hadn't expected. One that made her stopped walking and pull Viola to a stop as well from their clasped hands. Once stopped, Maria tilted her head in her typical over exaggerated way as she stared at Viola. After a moment though, she just shook her head and smiled. "You always surprise me..." She muttered softly. It was part of the appeal that was Viola Chase. Viola had a knack for surprising Maria constantly. How... who knew.
"I was thinking something with experimental spells." She admitted with a shrug. With Maria's knack for languages, spell deconstruction was surprisingly simple. With actually training in the subject maybe even spell construction would eventually be possible. "Who knows though. I might find something more appealing."

When Maria asked if they liked the way she smelled, Viola shrugged. “Interpret it as you will.” Ambiguity wasn’t normally their favorite thing, but teasing Maria was quickly becoming one of Viola’s favorite pastimes, so the two kind of cancelled out. When Maria squeezed their hand, Viola reflexively squeezed back, smiling a little as they did so. This was…nice. The way they imagined being in a relationship was supposed to be.
Viola hadn’t been expecting to stop, but apparently Maria hadn’t been expected to be invited to Viola’s house, so they were even…sort of. Viola shrugged at the comment. “I didn’t think it was surprising by now that I want to help you.” They answered steadily. Part of that was helping Maria open up about her past, and part of it was helping to teach her about what it was like to commit herself to someone. Helping Maria in a simple, physical way by giving her a roof to sleep under was a lot less complicated than either of those other things.
“That sounds like fun.” Viola said when Maria said that she was looking into working with experimental spells. “I can’t imagine you’d find anything more appealing than getting to wreak havoc all day and get paid for it.” Viola teased.

Ugh, there it was. The not answer. Practically Viola's trademark. The one that made Maria twitchy and desperate for attention. Maria stepped closer to her partner to wrap her free arm around their waist while still holding tightly to their hand. "What if I want you to like what I smell like?" She whispered lowly and seductively. Now to see if she could wrangle out a slightly more favorable reaction.
Maria looked away and smiled just a little. "I'm... not used to people wanting to help me." She admitted. But when she didn't let people close enough to realize she needed help... Well, no wonder she wasn't used to it.
"Oh, I can wreak havoc in many ways. Experiment spells is just one of them." Maria grinned.

Viola had to stop themself from chuckling when Maria asked about her wanting Viola to like what they smelled like. Viola moved her mouth to be right next to Maria’s ear, lowering their volume and pitch to match Maria’s seductive purr. “Try harder.”
Viola tried to follow Maria’s gaze when she looked away, but it appeared she wasn’t looking at anything else in particular – just didn’t want to look at them, which was understandable, given that this topic wasn’t a comfortable one for her to talk about. “Get used to it.” Viola advised. “Because I’m not going to stop.” And Maria would have a hard time getting rid of them – they could be extremely stubborn sometimes.
Maria said that she could wreak havoc in many ways, and Viola chuckled, shaking their head a little. “I have no doubt of that.” Viola replied, matching Maria’s grin. “But how many of those other ways can you get paid for?”

A familiar chill ran up Maria's spine as Viola leaned in and matched the tone she'd used. Initially it was from excitement that Viola might be matching it to return a sultry response. But instead Viola did the complete opposite and only make Maria frown and tighten her grip on Viola's waist and hand. Refusing to let Viola pull away even if they tried. "Gladly." Maria breathed.
Maria definitely hadn't expecting things to go with way with Viola. As a romantic relationship or even platonic. The fact that Viola had weaseled their way into her life like this was... unnerving. Terrifying at times. So all she could do was nod as Viola tld er to get used to it because they weren't stopping. For some reason Maria knew they were right.
"Oh, I'm sure there are many paid jobs for stirring up trouble. I just don't think people would approve of half of them." For a number of different reasons. Maria was sure she could definitely find plenty of other career paths, it was just finding the right one. The fact though was that Maria knew she couldn't do a desk job.

Gladly. One word should not have made them feel so many things, but here they were, wondering how many empires had toppled because of people like Maria saying words like gladly. They didn’t try to pull away from Maria, mostly because they knew they wouldn’t succeed, but Viola did turn their head just the slightest bit more so that their lips were pressed against the shell of Maria’s ear in a barely-there kiss.
Viola smirked when Maria said that there were a lot of ways to get paid for stirring up trouble. “Most of them are illegal, too, I’d imagine.” They said, because there were people who would kill and steal and otherwise mess with others for a paycheck, but they were generally frowned upon by the public and the government. “It would be a shame if you had to go to Azkaban, my Maria.” Viola murmured.

Viola didn't respond to that quiet but rather intense word. Instead Maria felt the slightest touch against her ear. Fluttery and delicate, almost as if she'd imagined it. But she hadn't. Maria couldn't help but let out a soft breath at the faint pressure before tilting her head to angle her ear away from Viola and bring her lips near theirs. "Is that what you want, Viola? I can do more then simply 'try harder'..." She teased lightly. She didn't move yet, instead waiting for Viola to answer.
"There are plenty that are legal! Well... Barely." Maria protested with a wide grin. Of course quite a few weren't, like Viola stated. And then there were several that were... questionable. "But where's the fun in a perfectly legal job?" She added after a moment. As Viola mention going to Azkaban, that grin widened, but then Maria froze. My Maria. That was what Viola said. "Yours?" Maria slowly asked as she leaned in to brush her lips against Viola's. "Am I yours, Viola?" She breathed against Viola's lips, not bothering to pull away.

Maria asked if that was what they wanted, and Viola swallowed hard. They didn't know what they wanted and they wondered if Maria was trying to charm them or if the closeness of it all was just clouding their senses. Viola forced themelf to take a deep breath. "I guess you'll have to see if it's what I want, won't you?" They asked, though their voice lacked some of the easygoing confidence they normally had in verbally sparring with Maria. They needed to calm down, Viola thought to themself, before they got themself in trouble.
"The fun is in not going to Azkaban." Viola reiterated. "I don't think you'll be able to have your fun there." And they wouldn't treat Maria all that well, with her Fire hands and all. Viola froze when Maria's lips brushed against theirs, having hardly realized what they had said. "Well, I'm yours." Viola said, attempting to be rational about a situation that was, by its nature, irrational. "So it's only fair if you're mine too." They let their words sink in a moment before pressing their lips against Maria's again, firm and insistent and demanding to claim what was theirs.
