@odette <3 Jacob was killed.
The Minister's words rang through his head. Over and over again. This couldn't be happening. This couldn't be real, or true, or have actually happened. How was his brother dead? Why was his brother dead? He had just seen him a few days ago, just talked to him. And he was gone. And would never come back. Jonah had left the Ministry immediately. Walked quickly, head straight, no words spoken to anyone who tried to talk to him or even send him a smile. He wasn't sure what to do or where to go. Jo's parents weren't close by. His other brother wasn't close by. Oh, his other brother. Jacob's twin.
He hadn't realized his feet weren't moving anymore, he was standing in the middle of a dirt road, staring ahead at nothing. Jonah swallowed hard, shut his eyes and took a deep breath. He no longer felt anything. A few tears had fallen, yet it hadn't truly hit him. Jonah still felt as if his brother was out there, and he'd see him at work tomorrow. At some point Jonah had begun walking again and after quite some time, he ended up at the doorstep of the person who his brother loved dearly, and the only person Jonah knew would feel the same as he.
With three simple, hard knocks, he stared at the door in front of him, waiting for Odette to answer.

The day had started like any other. Jacob left for work just before Odette did. Odette's hours had been cut in half at work after Jacob had convinced her to tell her boss about her pregnancy so she was mainly working five hours a day at the Curse Breaking offices instead of in the field, so she still felt at least somewhat useful when a question came up that someone else couldn't answer with her field experience. Odette was just getting ready to go to work though when she got the owl.
It was from the Ministry. Odette didn't remember opening it but she remembered the feeling that came immediately after.
Jacob was dead. Jacob wasn't coming home. Jacob was gone.
Odette stood in her front hallway, clutching the owl and her hands trembling for about five minutes until her legs finally gave out and she leaned back at against the wall behind her, sliding down as she finally let out the sobs she had wanted to let out the moment she read those words. She received another owl some time later, and through her tears she could see it was from her own place of work but she didn't bother to open it. She figured she knew what it said.
The brunette sat there for hours, just sobbing and crying out into the silence of her now empty home. Her hands held her stomach, which underneath her blouse was a four and a half month along pregnancy belly. Odette looked down at the floor underneath her and slowly looked up toward the door where she saw a pair of Jacob's boots. A pair of boots she would never see him in again. And after that, she just kept crying and crying until she couldn't even tell time anymore.
It had to have been hours since Odette got the owl when she heard three hard knocks at her door. She hadn't fallen asleep, but maybe she had blacked out or something because she realized now her face was dry but she still felt like she was sobbing. She had cried herself up dry. It took her a moment until she found the energy and the courage to get up from her spot on the floor to answer the door. She knew she looked terrible, but she figured whoever was behind this door, knew what had just happened.
When Odette finally opened the door, she laid eyes upon the person in her doorway and immediately fell into his arms and continued her dry sobs. She wasn't the only person who had lost someone.

@odette <3 It took a few moments for the door to open. Jonah hadn’t expected anything different. But what he hoped for, was that Odette was in there, safe and sound, even if heartbroken, that she was safe. That the baby was safe, and that they’d be okay in the end. That all three of them would be okay in the end. That his parents would be okay. That his other brother would be okay. But especially Odette, and this unborn child, his brother’s unborn child. His nephew, that would grow up without a father. The tears fell down his cheeks, and then the door opened.
Before he could speak, Odette fell into him, her entire body racking into sobs. Jonah’s strong arms immediately wrapped around this small girl, holding her as tightly as he could without hurting her. He rested his cheek on the top of her head, the smell of her hair making him even more sad. It smelled like shampoo, but it also had a small trace of Jacob. The two of them stood there in front of her door, holding each other, crying out the feeling of heartbreak.

It was proably horrid of Odette to think, but when Jonah wrapped his arms around her and rested his cheek upon her head, she had wished it was Jacob. She loved Jonah, she always had but... she was heartbroken. She was never going to be held like this by Jacob ever again. It was a long few minutes of just crying into Jonah's shoulder until Odette could even begin to compose herself enough to speak. When she did, she didn't really move from where she was at all. "J - Jonah," she tried to speak clearly but couldn't help that she was still crying. "I - I'm... I'm so s - sorry." It broke her heart that Jake was never going to come home, but it broke her heart even more to know that he had Jonah and his own family that he had left behind.

@odette <3 Jonah knew he himself was distraught. He lost his brother. The brother he grew up with, always messed around with, and was incredibly close to. The brother that he argued with, and messed around with for fun. Jacob was gone, and there was nothing either of them could do about it. Her shaking stopped, but he was sure the tears continued to fall. Her words were slightly muffled, but Jonah understood everything Odette had said. He moved his arms from around her slowly, and lightly grabbed her cheeks, lifting her head up to look at him. His thumbs wiped away the tears on her cheeks, and his bright blue eyes met her greyish ones. Jonah's voice was gentle, and even though his voice only wavered slightly, tears continued to leave his own eyes. "Odette. Do not apologize. You didn't do this."

Odette had never felt so helpless and vulnerable in her life. She never in a million years thought that something like this could happen to her, and that made her feel even worse for being so selfish. She was sure Jonah had never expected this to happen either. She didn't think she could look Jonah in the eyes until she felt him palce his hands on her cheeks and lift her chin so that she was looking up at him. She could feel her own heart breaking all over again when she saw the tears falling from Jonah's eyes as he wiped her own away. "B - but... J - J - Jacob..." Her voice was barely above a whisper before another round of sounds racked her body. How were they going to get past this?

@odette <3 Jonah sighed and pulled Odette back into his chest. His large hands rubbed her back, up and down in a comforting motion and he moved them into her and his brother's home, shutting the door behind him with his foot so they were no longer in the public eye. Jonah knew she came first. She was pregnant, and her emotions were already out of whack. Jo couldn't imagine being in the position of having a child, whose father was now dead, and having to raise his son on his own. So Jonah was here, doing whatever Odette needed and that is how his life would be. His hands moved from her back and he ran his fingers through her hair gently, his tears coming to a stop. Jonah's eyes were shut, but after a moment he looked down at the girl he had begun to consider a sister. "Would you like some tea?"

Odette had been so overwhelmed with sadness she had not even realized that Jonah had not come inside yet, but she was barely still aware as he gently rubbed her back and moved them both inside. Odette felt numb. Even though she was eternally grateful that Jonah was there and that she still had him, her whole body felt numb. Even now, it felt like she was running out of tears to cry. She took in a deep breath as Jonah ran his fingers through her hair, taking a moment to find comfort in this gesture. She hadn't felt any comfort at all since she had got the news. There was silence between them before Jonah asked if she would like some tea, and with a loud sniff, Odette nodded. "That would be nice." And she moved to sit over at the dining room table, the one she and Jacob had had one of their very first official non-friend dates at.

@odette <3 The warmth of her house made Jonah shiver. He thought it was the warmth of the house at least. Maybe it was the smell of Jacob, or the pictures of them on the wall, or the fact that this was Jacob's home as well as Odette's. Taking a deep breath, he let it out slowly at the feeling of Odette's touch disappearing. She walked over to the table and sat down, and for the first time that day, Jonah smiled at her. "You look cute." Her baby bump was visible, and it was the first time Jonah had actually seen her with it. He moved to the stove and put the tea on, grabbing two mugs out of the cabinets. "Milk and sugar?"
